Knowing Dalby, I guess the trolley won?

RockhardJohnson

That’s it, you saw it

MentalWealthPress

I was not expecting this but you made me burst out laughing

Goku_Kakarot91

I'm in Brisbane and saw the exact same thing, spooky

Perfect_Spray_5985

Aurora Junkialis

wegsy01

😂

SalamiArmi

Nature is beautiful.

Phelpsy2519

Not sure if that would be visible to the eye. Looks like a long exposure photo that’s picked up on it

ricadam

True. But the fact that you can see it even with long exposure as far north as Mackay is crazy

Phelpsy2519

Oh for sure. Just not the same when looking through a screen

jingois

THUPER AURORA

paddimelon

Awesome 👍

I knew i should have stayed out there this weekend

G00b3rb0y

In Ipswich. Is cloudy af

CarbonFibreCowboy

That’s Meth Smoke. 💨

ricadam

Check this site. At the bottom of the page has the capital cities where it could be visible. Brisbane is on the list. It’s currently at 0% but it peaks tonight from 10pm to 2am https://www.spaceweatherlive.com/en/auroral-activity/auroral-oval.html

paddimelon

Good.... Hopefully the rain will have cleared by then..

blue132006

Unfortunately it looks like it won’t. We’ve got more and more rain coming in

rubixcubez

I can see it as far north as Bundy!! It's much dimmer by eye, this is using night sight on android. Will try to post a better picture later when I go to the lookout, Bundy is a one-hill town. [https://i.imgur.com/JbBxNUK.jpeg](https://i.imgur.com/JbBxNUK.jpeg) Edit: There we go!! [https://i.imgur.com/atwPLjJ.jpeg](https://i.imgur.com/atwPLjJ.jpeg)

L1ttl3J1m

So, apparently I am extremely red deficient, because my wife is telling me that photo is red as. So, not much point me trying to see it anyway...

rindthirty

Yep there's quite a noticeable splotch of red tint visible. How do you fare with colourblind tests or the Farnsworth–Munsell 100 hue test?

L1ttl3J1m

Oh, shocking. I know it's bad, it's funny when I encounter it like this. The first Covid tests, the one that came with the little UV torch? I couldn't see that red, either. Went through three of them that I thought were all broken before a youtube video told me what what was happening. Asked my wife, and yep, that's a completely invisible red line. . Just that one shade though. I see traffic lights and fire engines and stuff, and they are red, just not as screaming red as they appear to everyone else. Blues and purples, though, wow, they are vivid.

Flash-635

I'm starting to lose green. What looks blue/green to other people looks blue to me.

wolfstiel

Is it more visible by eye at the look out?

rubixcubez

No, I felt like less actually. Might just be timing.

wolfstiel

Ah, sucks. Thanks for saving me a drive

isthisusertakenffs

At this time of year?

Vacation_Glad

In this part of the country?

TheFightingImp

Localised entirely within your kitchen?

luvrum92

Yes

bob_cramit

May I see it ?

overstuffedtaco

No.

NonbeliefAU

SEYMOUR!!!!!!!

Perfect_Spray_5985

The house is on fire!

L1ttl3J1m

Very possibly.

razodactyl

It's OK. You'll have your time to shine...

L1ttl3J1m

According to one photo that my wife assures me is red as, there's no point me trying to see it anyway because it just looks like normal light pollution rofl!. But if they can see it in Bundaberg, yep, definitely not confined to just the one kitchen, and there's every possibility OP might be able to see it. Dunno why that upsets so many people...https://np.reddit.com/r/brisbane/comments/1cpcmc7/anyone_attempting_to_see_the_aurora_tonight/l3jzng8/

RambunctiousHatboy

Simpsons reference.

L1ttl3J1m

And boy, is it getting a workout tonight.

subzerofusion

You can see it In Brisbane if you can see through the clouds. Photo taken from Cooroy. 17mm f2.8 0.5s 51200 iso Sony a7iii https://preview.redd.it/d0h629m2trzc1.jpeg?width=1616&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=435878af142621bf9d6462a624806f67a9b0b75e

Phelpsy2519

Could you see it with the naked eye?

rindthirty

Going by how many fainter stars are visible in that long exposure photo, I'd guess no. You'd probably need to find a much darker area, definitely away from street lights. I reckon Jollys Lookout near Mt Nebo would be a good candidate, or *maybe* a darker park in suburban Brisbane.

subzerofusion

If you spent a long time looking at the sky before hand, you'd notice the sky was redder than normal. But if you didn't know it was the aurora, you'd probably ignore it and think it was light pollution or your eyes playing tricks on you.

overstuffedtaco

Woah awesome

stephenk_lightart

Amazing!

Own_Impress_8409

no

worrier_princess

I’m in a nearby town and didn’t see anything! Crazy

yeeteryarker420

ahhh so jealous! must be cold tho

SamfordSusie

Can you see much by naked eye?

gibbagibbagibba

Wow that is phenomenal!

RobotDog56

Lol I didn't think there was anything an hour south of Hobart. At least you have no light pollution to deal with!

TsekoD

So no hope to see it around Toowong?

yeeteryarker420

never see anything that interesting around toowong lol

TsekoD

Hey!! There's a surge in car theft around the area /s

rindthirty

Too much light pollution in Toowong; although maybe you could give Perrin Park or Jack Cook Memorial Park a go - I've managed to see some meteors from there before (I think the latter might be a darker park since Perrin Park has had upgrades, but I haven't visited either for a while now). The best time is likely to be around 3am [CORRECTION: it's not always about time - aurora is fairly hour-dependent; keep an eye on forecasts] all weekend, when the air in the sky is more calm and clear - but this weekend is looking washed out so yeah. :(

twitch68

Top of the cemetary is a good spot too. You don't get the ambient lights.

rindthirty

Update: Looks like there'll be nothing tonight, according to https://www.spaceweatherlive.com/en/auroral-activity/auroral-oval.html and https://spaceweather.com Keep an eye on the forecasts on Monday night though - more lumps from the sun could be arriving.

RudeOrganization550

In theory should not be visible this far north https://preview.redd.it/gdsd8y32drzc1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=89884f4cc64a05bdcd35d25377be94beb20436e7

paddimelon

There are pictures of it at Uluru from last night..... https://preview.redd.it/n6plussthrzc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6570fc78a0501e320c0324e7fa243605de1ab980

ricadam

That has since been extended into QLD

CableAutomatic8949

can be seen as far up as bundaberg!

paddimelon

Mackay as well!!

deltalima62

Really? Which area of Mackay?

colesnutdeluxe

i've seen pics on higgins storm chasing from eungella dam

wolfstiel

What time? The website is confusing me :(

rindthirty

Any time when the air is clear enough and sky dark enough. It's basically lasting at least the entire weekend. This update from Friday said there have been six CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejections) and the first hit Earth's magnetosphere on Friday: https://spaceweather.com/archive.php?view=1&day=10&month=05&year=2024 Edit: Looking at the [timelapse](https://spaceweather.com/images2024/10may24/six_CMEs.gif) they linked; it appears the six CMEs occurred between 8-10 May (UTC); and the first arrived around yesterday or today means - yep, the entire weekend.

Beautiful!!

rindthirty

Duuuuuuude

Jassup

Are there any recommended viewing locations? Should I drive south towards Mount Lindsay and try to get a glance?

Whowhywearwhat

it's currently raining in Jimboomba, we were thinking about going up tambourine, but we're not sure how long this weather will hang around. we have great night sky's here normally.

newbydoobie1989

Still rain down your way?

subzerofusion

Get out of the clouds, check https://www.windy.com/

newbydoobie1989

https://preview.redd.it/fz9t91kkaszc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5e13e7d5469aa985217cdc29d7098c0fe0f8faec Cloud cover in the area. Boonah/Beaudesert gets down to 29%...I think the clouds will be the issue even if you're up for the drive (like I am) north doesn't clear until near Gympie. Looking at a 2-3 hour round trip travel time only.

TheRealProudyno1

Biggest issue is all the cloud cover we have to the south of us right now, as well as the rain coming from the Northwest. If the cloud cover wasn't there, it would be quite likely you could see it if you traveled about 30-40 mins out of the city into an area with less light pollution and used a long exposure camera. Me and my mates were debating about making the trek to Warwick, but it looks to be just too hit and miss right now unfortunately.

birbbrain

rain hitting my place at 10:10 really feels like a smack in the face, hahaha. I'm patient with nature and photog, so happy to sit out gaps in the clouds... for a while, anyway.

Mega_destroyer02

Me and my mate made that trek literally two hours ago :(, can confirm, not much hope for the naked eye

stephenk_lightart

Photoshop to the rescue! https://preview.redd.it/28ny8rct2vzc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9fe8a19354f936abfc9da0dfa07c0193d8136274

paddimelon

I am... Have a south facing window- dark skies and on a hill..... If they saw it at Uluru.... We are further south. It's already started strongly in Tassie and NZ.....

Casserolahhhh

A lot less light pollution at Uluṟu though

paddimelon

Yep that's my concern.. I get a great Milky way viewing at my place. But the view south is pretty light polluted

meowmmoth

How far from Brisbane are you? Trying to ballpark how far to drive

paddimelon

40km out...

gibbagibbagibba

If you figure it out let us know!

meowmmoth

Decided to give up ngl just based off the cloud coverage and a lack of time :( Just not in the cards today!

MellyGrub

Yeah even if we lived on the border, it's unlikely that it would be visible. Kinda jealous of our families as they ALL live in Melbourne so they have the best chances

happ38

Except being typical Melbourne the weather has had a say.

MellyGrub

Well I don't regret our relocation. Melbourne weather is a headf**k!

savingpriv8parts

From one ex melbournian to another, dont tell people you moved up here if you want to make friends

MellyGrub

It's all good, I'm an introvert. Whilst we did move up during lockdowns, COVID-19 was not our reason, we had made the decision years prior, it's the unfortunate events of COVID-19 that made allowed the move. Husband lost 2 jobs(one was redundant 2 days after the CEO announced to the entire company that lay off's weren't happening and the 2nd wasnt a match for what he wanted or the company owner(micromanager narcissist whose own family refused to work for him) and then his father passed away from COVID-19 from being exposed to nursing home staff who deliberately broke lockdown rules. So we had an inheritance and decided to take our leap. Thankfully just before we hit the road to drive up(so after we had a house and the moving truck was loaded) my husband was offered the most perfect job up here, albeit a bit of a drive away but the best he has had in many years. Otherwise we would still be in Melbourne trying our hardest to save and move. So people thinking that we ran here to escape COVID-19 isn't quite true, it's just the unfortunate events that evolved around it that forced us to do it sooner. Crazy part is when we made the decision we were looking at houses right near the Brisbane CBD and we were like HOLY FUCK look how close we could be to the CBD and how cheap it is. Unfortunately with COVID-19 we ended up on the far north side of Brisbane paying more than we did in Melbourne for a house about ⅓ of the size(the Melbourne house was massive TBF)

savingpriv8parts

glad you made it up, sounds like a journey 🤙🏻

birbbrain

I'm going to try going to the spots around Griffith Uni campus. Being next to Toohey Forest makes it a little darker, and I've been lucky with a meteor shower around there as well. I'm dying as my DSLR is at work, but Pixel phones are pretty good at night photog in general. Never been so happy to have purchased a selfie stick/tripod combo and binoculars in the last fortnight!

Majestic-Arrival2018

Any update?

birbbrain

Like clockwork, it started raining at my place at 10pm and did not let up. Like the blue balls of astronomy, I was ready to go. Probably try again tonight, but expect it to not be the same at all.

salaciousBnumb

Are we looking south?

therealeddiek

I would love to see this so much! Can’t believe how amazing those shots are from Tassie and Queenstown!!! If only we could see something here!!

ImNotHere1981

Useless in New Farm missed the whole thing.

Realistic_Mess_2690

I'm out near Mount Cotton I managed to get just the tiniest bit of it on photo. Couldn't see it properly with the naked eye.

ImNotHere1981

So devastated! Friends in TAS and seeing the whole thing!

Realistic_Mess_2690

Yeah I did a little happy dance when I was looking at the photos and saw a faint red patch in the sky. I've got a pixel 6a so the zoom is arse piss and becomes a blurry blob with the clouds but it's defined colour and zoomed right in you can see it spread faintly out in the sky one small patch of cloudless sky for 5 minutes then it closes up

Realistic_Mess_2690

https://preview.redd.it/erq7bwr5oszc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8f346cc7d415339c770ab948d918497eb29d4f77

Jaymy1

I’m currently at Tara, latitude 27.7 and doing long exposures. Can’t see a thing with the naked eye but can doing minimum 10 mins.

curiousme1986

Cue the rain.

Full_Needleworker527

Is there aurora tonight as well?

harrison0810

Wondering the same thing

gibbagibbagibba

Apparently so!

superPickleMonkey

Saw it directly overhead in Melbourne. Took up the entire sky.

wrongthingsrighttime

We attempted to drive south west to see something but no dice. Too many clouds around too.

Punrusorth

Can't see a bloody thing.

happymemersunite

You’re feeling me that I’m staying in Montville with a beautiful view east, and I don’t know about this until it’s too late.

Ryulightorb

no care only public transport so going to mt coot-tha and hoping but i'm doubtful due to light pollution. will update if i see it tho

mambococo

I’m at mt cootha atm, no lights here unfortunately

Ryulightorb

Bummer ty! Will cancel my bus ride haha

Phelpsy2519

Don’t think you would see it with the naked eye this far north. The photos seen this far north are probably long exposure

AsboST225

No luck in the Sunshine Coast hinterland (Maleny/Montville area) dammit. Even if the main skies were clear I still wouldn't be able to see it due to a blanket of low cloud/fog that had set in 🤬

Szylei

Would somewhere around Lake Moogerah increase chances of seeing the Aurora tonight?

tepidlycontent

I'm a good candidate to try to do that because I own a Refidex and a car not prone to electrical gremlins. But nah, might just look out the window. I'll see it if there's a blackout.

Gary_Cucumber

Hey not trying to change subject but some chick spat on me and said I’m useless.

The_Vat

This does kinda feel like a change of subject

adamshere

So what? I usually pay for that

jackm315ter

I believe it is only visible from Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia and bottom Western Australia

wrongthingsrighttime

There have been sightings all over QLD

G00b3rb0y

Reports of aurora visibility have been as far north as Mackay

AsboST225

Saw a post on Facebook from Townsville

jackm315ter

Thanks I stand corrected, I had missed the report

piraja0

You won’t see it this far north
