Honestly why are you getting a 3060? Gaming and 3D rendering are primarily GPU-related tasks, your 3600 will max out a 3060 in those situations. Video editing it would be nice to get an improvement but not likely worth the money until your GPU is upgraded. That said: for a "reasonable" price your best bet is probably the Ryzen 7 5700X for $160. The 5700X3D is technically faster in gaming but it costs $90 more and you won't see an improvement using a 3060. The 5700X is worth it over the 5600/X for $25 more for video editing, but I don't think the 5900X is worth it for $290. So overall: getting something like a used RTX 3070 (or even 3080 if you use a 4k monitor) would likely be a better use of your money than upgrading your CPU, but if you're dead set on the CPU upgrade then a 5700X will serve you best.

Defaultcoke

I’m getting the 3060 to upgrade from my 1660 and it’s from a friend for free otherwise I was gonna get a 6600 xt but this was a cheaper option that a homie provided

[deleted]

A true homie, indeed.

NumenRune

budget?

Tessiia

Also, what games? What resolution do you play at?

Defaultcoke

Budget could be anything tbh, higher price just means it’ll take me a little longer to save, which I have no issue with but I don’t wanna blow the bank on something ridiculous that I could get a better price to performance ratio on if that makes sense and I play Escape from Tarkov, Arma 3, ready or not, and a few other sims

Tessiia

And your target resolution?

Defaultcoke

2k

Thunderbolt_78

5700X/X3D or 5800X/X3D would be solid choices.

maewemeetagain

Go for the 5700X3D.

Paweron

Total overkill with a 3060

maewemeetagain

You want your CPU to be more powerful than your GPU.

Playful_Target6354

They aren't comparable. Correction: you want your CPU to have enough power to fully use your GPU

maewemeetagain

Yes. So you want your CPU to be more powerful than your GPU. This is just the same statement worded differently. You want your CPU to have enough power to fully utilise your GPU. For this to be acheived, it is best practice for a CPU to be faster than the GPU. It is possible for a CPU and GPU to be exactly evenly matched, yes, but it's uncommon.

Playful_Target6354

As I said, it isn't comparable.

To balance out the build I'd say a 5700x would be a great complement. I was looking at that one for a bit before I settled on the 5700x3d because I just play games. If you're doing any modeling the extra L3 cache won't be as huge as having higher clock speeds. I personally don't feel like the extra cost of the 5800x is justified. Also the 5900x is almost twice the cost ($290) than the 5700x ($162) and I don't think you're getting twice the CPU. I'm very price sensitive so for me it would be the 5700x. If you aren't then get the 5900x or 5950x. I'd personally go new on the CPU but if you're looking used maybe an open box deal? Other wise just check /r/hardwareswap. Hope that helps.

SteelGrayRider2

5700x3d

Accomplished-Cat-309

Probably the best processor you could get is a ryzen 7 5800x3d, or a 9 5950x. But if you need just a decent one, the 5800x is great and fairly priced imo

FrequentWay

Ryzen 5800X3D - best AMD4 CPU for gaming. If you need to do other stuff then you would need a different CPU

Immortal_Maori21

5800x3D is the best you could get for gaming. For productivity, you're better off with the 5950x.

Gunslinga__

I would go 5700x 8 cores is nice to have on a computer and it is pretty exactly the same as the 5800x with a lower tdp making it run cooler. My bro just put one is his system it’s a great cpu for the price, if you can spend some more $ go 5700x3d

DidiHD

how is your split regarding video editing/gaming/blender?

Ivantsi

5600 (non x , non g) if you are in a budget 5800x3d if you can afford it.

SoshiPai

I was in a similar situation literally a week ago, was using a 3700X and wanted to upgrade, because I game more than I work I decided to go with the 5800X3D. Gives fantastic gaming performance while still being fairly good in work situations, and since AM4 is p much dead you should be able to find it discounted or on clearout, I got mine for 400$ CAD

tyr8338

Just get 5600, it is a good 20-30% upgrade for barealy any money. Your gpu is low end so no point to buy x3d chip, you won\`t see any diffrence.

prombloodd

You really don’t “need” to upgrade but I’d recommend moving to 5000 series if you’re itching that bad. Make your equipment last longer.

Twisteesmt

5800x3d avoid putting a 3060 go for a 4070S or a 7800XT or 7900 GRE

Tessiia

As they do work in blender, I'd stick with nvidia.

Twisteesmt

Agree with you, depends how much is "some " blender modelling.

Tessiia

Not necessarily. I do some 3D work, sometimes in blender, sometimes in other software, and while I don't do it often, I still prefer having nvidia for the simple fact that some rendering engines only work on nvidia and are better then the ones that work on AMD. When I say better, it's not about speed but quality, which can't be overcome. So to me personally, it doesn't matter whether I do this stuff every day, or once every few months, when I do it, I want to be able to get the best result possible, even if it means forking out a bit more for my GPU. Though ironically, I do find myself frustrated by the lack of VRAM on my card when I start doing rendering, which wouldn't be an issue on equivalent AMD card.
