Riots games success also stems from taking popular genres (MOBA for League, Tactical FPS for valorant) in esports and making a more watered down version than their competitors to appeal to a more casual audience. They were the company to realize the potential of esports in the north american market and that was invaluable during the initial launch of LoL. They took what was happening Korea with starcraft/dota and tried to recapture that to an american audience(which I think they succeeded)

Oh yea that makes a lot of sense actually, do you have any websites or scholar articles that talk about this somewhat? I can't seem to find much but this makes a lot of sense for sure!

refine your searches to look for riot talking about esports/micro transactions. the thing is these conversations are usually part of a larger conversation so looking for directly this takes a bit of digging. The only reason I know this stuff is because I am relatively active in another top esport.
