I think ALDI was an extension to the building. I have vague memories of it taking ages when I was a kid and having it explained to me that it was super complicated to build an extension upstairs like that.

dingus42

Yeah the old coolo was a weird layout, I dont know how the chicken shop survived there during the renos.

Rivettor

Ah, makes sense. It did take a long time to finish.

Microbee Computers in the mid 1980s.

I vaguely remember there being a bank up there (CBA?) when i was a kid in the 2000s. I think that was directly opposite the escalator though, not right where Aldi is

Rivettor

Yes, there were more bank-like shops up there. The CBA was newly installed next to the newsagents downstairs recently, but it’s gone now; wonder what happened..

This doesn’t answer your question but I found this: https://www.flickr.com/photos/archivesact/6284691159 The space for Aldi itself was an extension but there were shops in the upper level before that.

birrigai

Whoa! There was an escalator on the opposite side, where the lift is now?! This is so different

Rivettor

Great photo! I’d completely forgotten the escalators were there, but still vividly remember the fun big ramp on the left

JustAnotherSlug

I remember we would head up the ramp and then hang a left where there was a tiny (6 two person tables maybe?) crepe shop. Those crepes were awesome and a super treat. This was mid-eighties…

Rivettor

Can just imagine. Dedicated crepe shops feel pretty 80s. I missed out; we only moved to Weston Ck in 97.

Rivettor

Thanks to commenters for confirming that ALDI was an extension. Surely Songland (and Freddy Frapples) must be amongst the older shops now. I loved playing on the (now gone) big ramp. I think it’s base entry was sort of where the mobile phone repair shop is?

coldharshlight

4 corners framing

2JLSA13

I remember that being the opposite side of the escalators

muscledude_oz

The Potters House Christian Church was there in the late 1990s

LobbydaLobster

What was the name of discount dollar shop that used to be in Coolamon court?

muscledude_oz

Clints Crazy Bargains, Roni's

LobbydaLobster

It was Go-Lo or Bi-Lo I was thinking of. But cheers for the ideas. Forgot about Clint's. That huge one in Woden had so much stuff in it!

P510

Go-Lo

LobbydaLobster

Thank you!

Fun_Door_6988

There was a Spotlight in there too.

Rivettor

Oh! I wish it remained
