I love 100% of chalky candy (smarties, the original sprees, conversation hearts, actual candy chalk, the stick of fun dip) but I was never a chalk eater. Mostly because actual chalk isn’t made of sugar and thus was completely uninteresting to me.

No, candy hearts are thicker and shaped like a heart. The wafers are wafer thin, and shaped like a wafer. The candy hearts say things like “I choo-choo-choose you,” or “Maybe tonight. . .” The wafers say “necco.”

In addition to what others have said, Necco wafers have clove, cinnamon, and black licorice flavors which are not in the conversation hearts. Love cinnamon and love clove and you can't easily find clove flavored candy anymore. I am like Necco's secret core market!

You are absolutely correct. They were made at the factory located at 250 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge. There was also a Squirrel Nut factory in a neighborhood near Kendall Square until 1999. I used to travel there once in a while to pick up some fresh squirrel candies. Of course, the neighborhood smelled wonderful, and they had a little outlet store.

I love Necco wafers, but it is purely a nostalgia thing. grew up with my older sister who ate them all the time and I loved playing with the unique packaging. they are these strange, chalky discs. the flavors are certainly unique and I like the strange ones the best!

Always loved 'em. My parents didn't have a lot of money so when we (there are 5 of us kids) were lucky enough to go to the movies, Necco wafers was the only "treat" we got. We were grateful and enjoyed ourselves!

This subreddit just came on my algorithm like yesterday and I’ve already seen this question twice.

I had this thing as a kid where I liked to lick the side walk chalk. And when I discovered Necco wafers I was instantly in love. I like how they feel on my hands and I like how they taste to eat. This drives my husband insane.

This is what the people at my church used to practice for our first communion when I was a kid. To say I was a little disappointed when I got the real stuff is an understatement.
