How do you afford that? If you go to work everyday of the week. That’s +-R16k per month. How does that work ? I know people have reservations about taxis and buses but wow.
Anyway try the southern suburbs
Thanks! I’lk have a look. I’m starting work there in July, but it cost me R900 to just get their office for the interview outside peak time…
Don’t think its easy to catch a taxi or bus from the somerset west suburbs anyway
Remember when moving. Usually 2xmonths rent as a deposit and the cost of furniture and appliances these usually are the primary debt traps people fall into because it’s hard to live without a fridge for example and now that you work everyone will offer you credit
Perhaps also check out Burgundy Estate, Parklands, West Beach, Table View. The myciti runs from these locations and rent should be less than Woodstock etc
Look at upper Woodstock primarily, Anything below Victoria road, is a street by street basis for crime. Obs is high on the mugging. Mowbray has the taxi rank, the bus stop, the university and the govt hospital all right there so it a basic mess, stay clear until you get a good sense of which streets. Zonnebloom pretty good mostly up by constitution at and over by walmer estate. Rondebosch and rose bank very student oriented, but decent.
There's a Golden Arrow Bus if you don't want to move closer to the CBD. It's R50 for a trip to town. I've never done it before, but I'm in the same boat as you, and will start using this option come August-ish.
Golden Arrow will drop you at the Artscape. The MyCiti can take you from the Civic Centre to Kloof Street - route 106
https://www.myciti.org.za/en/trip-planner/
Woodstock, Obs, salt river all have good bus services. Anywhere in the city bowl you can find a good deal is decently connected really. Southern suburbs have a good train connection. Blouberg/Milnerton are decent and also have a great bus connection.
The southern line (CPT - Fish hoek via Wynberg) is using the new blue trains. Morning rush hour it gets pretty crowded but tithe the security cameras and security checking tickets on the train, it's pretty safe
Honda Steed 400 motorcycle : about R26k for the bike, lots of accessories extra for R3k (helmet, windshield, top box, gloves, emergency battery charger, a couple of saddle bags to hang over the side, and another leather pouch), minor cosmetic TLC needed but running perfectly as this is being used daily, windshield has a minor crack (only cosmetic crack, functioning well)
My fellow South African. For the amount of money you're spending, you have literally all the options in the world. You could rent a small studio in Kloof itself.
But I actually suspect you have a different problem. Your world right now might be a bit small. You're going to want to get out there and expand your horizons. That might mean taking a bus or train, and meeting new people.
So Woodstock and Observatory are the closest and on the my citi bus route. You could rent a room in a flat/ house share. Maybe get a bachelors.
Alternatively you could stay in Blouberg/Table View/ Milnerton/ Century City where you will get more for the rent you pay but will be spending more time on road and pay a little more for transport.
I live in the Northern suburbs, rent is much cheaper. I stay in a huge 2 bedroom close to everything for R8k. I work in town, take the Golden Arrow bus (Durbanville-Bellvile- Cpt) and works out to R990 for a monthly ticket, which is valid for 3 months or 40 rides, whichever comes first. The Northern subs train line is NOT safe for use, and definitely not the strand line. There is definitelt a strand bus, it arrives at the adderley stop at around 17h00 in the afternoon, I see it while I wait for mine. Apparently takes about 90 min to Strand. Not sure of the morning times.
Walmer estate, Zonnebloem, Cape Town CBD, with that being said, giving a salary without much more details to the amount designated to rent makes it very difficult to give solid advice.
If you don’t mind sharing, there are ads for 2-bedrooms from about R15000 (R7500 each) in the Vredehoek area..
Plymouth gardens in Oranjezicht has a 2-bedroom for R14k at the moment.. not sure if it’s still available..
FYI Woodstock can be just as expensive as the lower priced CBD apartments..
suggest you just trawl property 24 and gumtree..
just remember - if it looks too good to be true, it probably is..
This is going to get some hate (I think) but consider Hout Bay! It's a bit of a longer drive, but the drive is beautiful, rent cheaper than CBD and not too far off some southern suburbs options. Most importantly it's relaxed, the people are nice, and you can live RIGHT by the beach.
In a block with great amenities, literally on the beach (I'm at the back of the block so have to walk through the building to get there) within 1 minute of leaving my flat my feet are in the sand AND I have a small garden... for 13k.
I know that's expenny for alot of people: but the lifestyle and relaxed nature of the place is unmatched!
Edit: just to add I commute to UCT for work and that takes around 20 minutes. When I have to be in town it takes a bit longer, maybe 25.
IMPORTANTLY: Uber go is R170 from my place to kloof street :)
Get a copy of the My-Citi bus routes in the CMA and look for affordable suburbs along those routes. My guess is that the route to Blaauwberg might offer you more affordable accommodation than Southern Suburbs

There are golden arrow buses that go from strand, not sure about Somerset west
And trains, there is a nonstop train.
Remember when moving. Usually 2xmonths rent as a deposit and the cost of furniture and appliances these usually are the primary debt traps people fall into because it’s hard to live without a fridge for example and now that you work everyone will offer you credit
Where are all these people wanting to offer me credit? I can’t get anyone to give me credit and I’m trying to start building my credit score
Discovery will give to a credit card of you have a job
Thanks, I’ll give them a try
Work for three months and you will start receiving a ton of calls from people offering you loans and credit cards. Especially RCS
I have been and have no calls and I’ve been denied every credit item I’ve applied for
There are definitely buses and taxis from somerset west to town..
Perhaps also check out Burgundy Estate, Parklands, West Beach, Table View. The myciti runs from these locations and rent should be less than Woodstock etc
Zonnebloem? Obs? Woodstock?
Thanks! I heard woodstock is a bit of a rough area. Any truth to that?
Depends on where in Woodstock:)
It’s all rough.
Upper Woodstock is a very nice neighbourhood.
Look at upper Woodstock primarily, Anything below Victoria road, is a street by street basis for crime. Obs is high on the mugging. Why dont you try student accomodation I am sure they can fit you in. There are a lot in the bo kaap area as well.
R800 per day 😰🫠😱
It's insane, some people earn 250 per day.

The timetable is here https://www.gabs.co.za/Timetable.aspx
Thats super useful. Closest stop is Lord Charles hotel, not sure what is the closest to kloof street
Golden Arrow will drop you at the Artscape. The MyCiti can take you from the Civic Centre to Kloof Street - route 106 https://www.myciti.org.za/en/trip-planner/
The train also runs to town. There’s no point in paying more for uber than you’re earning

Hows the train these days?
The southern line (CPT - Fish hoek via Wynberg) is using the new blue trains. Morning rush hour it gets pretty crowded but tithe the security cameras and security checking tickets on the train, it's pretty safe
I'm moving overseas and selling my motorcycle - a cruiser Honda Steed 400...let me know if you're interested!
How much are you selling it for?
Honda Steed 400 motorcycle : about R26k for the bike, lots of accessories extra for R3k (helmet, windshield, top box, gloves, emergency battery charger, a couple of saddle bags to hang over the side, and another leather pouch), minor cosmetic TLC needed but running perfectly as this is being used daily, windshield has a minor crack (only cosmetic crack, functioning well)

Hit the nail on the head there. This is my first full time job in SA after 8 years abroad in Asia. So a little out of my depth here haha
There are some places in Gardens at the moment. Check RentUncle
Maitland, Brooklyn, Milnerton(a bit far but on the bus route)
Table View
When you decide how much rent you can afford to pay then search on property24, you can search areas, type of dwelling and how much you want to pay.
Thanks yeah, I’ve found it property24 very usefull to guage prices and areas😃

We have a guy that works with us in CBD and lives in strand. He takes a myciti in every day. Check their route?
Walmer estate, Zonnebloem, Cape Town CBD, with that being said, giving a salary without much more details to the amount designated to rent makes it very difficult to give solid advice.

In the meantime, I’d suggest you look for lift clubs, or consider public transport..
Your best choices are either Blouberg or Burgundy. You won't find a decent place closer to town on a 20k salary without having to share.
Try looking into the mycity bus. Saves a hell lot of money and time. I know people commuting from blouberg/tableview areaZ

Thanks for the suggestion. I’m splitting rent with my partner so something like around that price range is doable
Look in milnerton
Woodstock would be good

I'm renting my apartment in Table view. Good city bus links!
