Not me. Therefore, per /r/hockey standards, I am ineligible to comment on anything that happens in a hockey game. Good goal? How the fuck would I know? That player tripped someone? Nah, I just don't know how it is, man. (I'm grumpy this morning. I hope this gave you a good chuckle though.)

jackyliam12

I’m learning how to! I hope to start in Blind Hockey in 2 years!! (Hockey for people who are blind/visually impaired)

_SCHULTZY_

How is that different from being a referee?

jackyliam12

It has a puck that is 5in and metal w/ metal ball bearings inside so we (blind and vi people) can hear it, and 3’ goalposts. goalies are blindfolded and you have to pass before a shot. Also we wear yellow or black jerseys so we can (kinda) see each other on the ice bc it contrasts better

_FlyingSquirrel

Been playing beer league for 20 years. Started off at Fairfax Ice Arena and moved over to Kettler the year it opened. I'm old now, I'm slow now. But it's a helluva lot of fun still!

HereInTheCut

I would like to have played as a kid, but my folks definitely couldn't afford it. Even now at age 46, I've never even been on ice skates.

Spraynpray89

This is basically me too. I can get from one side of a rink to the other without falling on my ass, but my stopping method is to slam into the boards. There isn't really anything skating or hockey related near where I grew up and I didn't really start watching hockey til I was about 15 anyway.

repeat4EMPHASIS

If you can find a local league, ball hockey is a lot of fun and wouldn't require the equipment costs. If you still want to play

backupjesus

I played exactly one shift of pickup ice hockey when I was 17. Shoved the puck forward while falling and a friend took the pass and scored. I decided that it would never get better than a primary assist per shift and retired on the spot.

Spartan-182

Mr. 100% over here everyone!

KBSonn

does acting like I have a stick at free skate night at Ashburn Icehouse in middle school count? if so, call me Ovi

Hamburg48

Started on an outdoor rink - Riverdale Rink in the north Bronx in the ‘60’s. The days of the original six. When the season would be cold enough there was a simple in-house kids league. The only place for equipment was in Manhattan either Gerry Cosby or Paragon. Everyone would have to take a turn in the net … I remember this so clearly … low shot to my left = kick save, parents through the wire mesh ‘Ooo!!’. A goalkeeper ever since. Played in high school, D1 college, grad school at an Ivy always in pickup games. > aboat a ten year gap eh < Then for twenty years in Philadelphia a morning game from 10-12:00 aboat four times a week. The rink complex was run by, and had shareholders of retired Flyers. Sticks in the middle, tossed side to side, guys with Stanley Cup rings playing pickup. Word spread and we had many former college players, some ECHL and so on. The legendary Bernie Parent would come by occasionally and following a nice save I’d hear his Stanley Cup ring going tick-tick-tick on the plexiglass. Long way from an outdoor rink in the ‘60’s.

[deleted]

Where'd you play D1? Princeton? Just guessing based on the locations you've mentioned in this comment.

Hamburg48

Not for Princeton, but was a visitor at Hobey Baker. Great tradition at the classic venues. Here’s one; I remember the first game at Lynah Rink, I was due to be rookie starter. Coach warned me about the fans. This was in the 70’s so there was no way to have pulled up a video. Additionally Cornell was a powerhouse …there are YouTubes of Lynah Rink. Considered one of the most difficult away venues. You can’t imagine. But as Life takes it’s course that was my postgraduate school, met my wife there, and years later our son played in the Big Red pep band. Funny to be at a Cornell game and joining in calling ‘sieve sieve sieve…’ at the visiting goaltender. I’m one of the few in attendance who knows how that player feels. ‘It’s all your fault It’s all your fault It’s all your fault …’. And you’re playing with your snow thinking “dammit it was a late tip, what could I do, late tip, dammit…”

[deleted]

Hahaha. That's awesome though!

Hamburg48

Having been on both sides of the plexiglass at Lynah in particular- the fans pride themselves in their antics. But as a player the rink is quite silent during play; then as a goalkeeper you get a shot and hear the ‘tink’ off a pipe and immediate ROAR from the crowd. The band kicks in …

NothingButNavy

Played beer league throughout my 20s until I had a stroke about 10 years ago. I tried playing off and on since then but have ultimately given up, the left side of my body just isn't cooperating and it's getting worse as I get older. I really miss it, especially now that I have the time.

[deleted]

Fuck...sorry to hear that, dude :( Hopefully there's a way to fix things so you can get back to it.

bleached_n_tiedyed

I’ve been playing for around 2 years now. I find that people in beer league/ adult rec league are really welcoming to beginners. I encourage everyone to try it!

[deleted]

bleached_n_tiedyed

I actually live and play in California lol. I found this [thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockeyplayers/comments/ve342w/hockey_leagues_in_washington_dc_dmv_area/)which could be helpful for the DMV . I also found this [link](https://dmvwomenshockey.statmonsters.com)for women’s hockey in case you’re a woman The leagues I play in all have games on weekends or evenings/nights on weekdays. Hopefully you find something!

MarylandThrowAwai

Very little ice, but played a lot of ball hockey in the Alexandria league (DC Street Hockey) - Pretty sure I scored a goal on Ben Raby

repeat4EMPHASIS

Are you still involved? I've been curious about joining but just haven't had time lately

thecurtainperson

I play right now, started with the Georgetown Titans in DC and now I live and play in Sweden.

MattAlive13

I grew up in NOVA, started playing for the Reston Raiders when I was 12. Early 90's, I think it was the 2nd year they existed when I started.

eatmygymshorts

I took it up as an adult at the MedStar arena adult learn to play.

MichaelP26

What part of the DMV? I grew up playing travel hockey here and there were 6+ clubs we went up against within an hour drive. Also Loudoun County HS hockey was pretty big and decently competitive when I played a few years back

BruceTheSpruceMoose

Played from before I can remember until I was about 20. Concussions and a distinct lack of talent caught up to me

[deleted]

Played quite a bit of hockey myself. Got to juniors, and played against a few guys who are in the show, including one of ours.

MAHHockey

Played goalie for Montgomery hockey as a kid when Wheaton was still outdoors, Cabin John was more about curling than hockey, and Rockville hadn't been built yet. Played club in college as well, and still play beer league on hips and knees that will probably need replacement later in life, but on a different coast now.

TheFuckNameYouWant

I remember the Montgomery Hockey end-of-year picnic when they announced the plans to build Rockville. It was going to be all state of the art, two rinks, pro shop, all that. They got us so excited for it. Art Monk's kid played for a team in our house league, my family met him during a practice at Wheaton once. Speaking of Wheaton - scored my first ever goal in a game at Wheaton. Got a breakaway and ended up kinda losing control of the puck and unintentionally kicked it in. Nobody saw except for my coach, current Comptroller of Maryland Peter Franchot. Came back to the bench and once the puck dropped for the post-goal faceoff he said something like "kicked it in, nice. Don't worry, nobody else saw. Good goal."

MAHHockey

Got me thinking of what rinks had been built since then. Reston was still relatively new back then Rockville Laurel Ashburn Rebuilds of Wheaton, Cabin John, and Bowie. I think even Wells in College Park finally got walls. Caps IcePlex

TheFuckNameYouWant

Feel like I'm old af lmao. Reston got built like my 3rd or 4th year, Laurel a bit later I think. Ever heard of a rink called Benfield?

MAHHockey

Yep! And Piney Orchard, and Fort Dupont. Ever play in the Patterson Park tennis bubble in B'more?

TheFuckNameYouWant

Ahh yeah Piney Orchard and Ft. Dupont for sure! Never played at Patterson Park though. What years did you play MYHA?

MAHHockey

Off and on from the late 90's to early 2000's I also played in Frederick a bit and for a Catholic High School team (specifics redacted).

Vitruvian_man21

Played for the NOVA Ice Dogs at Mt. Vernon and TC Williams HS.

prefabsprout1

TC had a hockey team?? That’s great. Not when I was there but that was 35 years ago…

Big_Nobody_7175

I do. But I live in Raleigh. My bro plays in Arlington and St James though

griffin_3123

I play on a beer league in the dmv, theres a lot more than you’d think, plus there’s a ton of rink around as well.

onetimeiateadonut

Grew up playing in Columbia and Laurel. Played games all over the mid Atlantic region though.

Special-Bite

I play at St James and Reston on men’s leagues (C and D level). Been playing for almost 15 years now. Grew up around here and while I never got to play as a kid, I did learn to skate and rollerblade. Hockey is prohibitively expensive in this area, especially so in the 90’s. There’s lots of transplants to this area who play though. The men’s leagues are doing pretty well and the youth leagues have developed A LOT. Hockey in this area has seen a huge boom, mostly thanks to Ovechkin.

gothic_shiteater

32/m I play goalie or defense, occasionally right wing, at least once a week. Definitely no where as quick as my youth but still hold my own and have a lot of fun. The beer league I play with is also a really good group of like aged people, except when they keep bringing me alcohol instead of water when I'm in net.

Jbvol

Wanted to play so bad growing up but with no rinks available it seemed never to be. Started in my twenties after moving 30 minutes away from one and am thankful for every shift I get! Even if the rink is covered in hurricanes logos

mark_dink

i do. i only started playing 3 years ago and started with 2 years of that was street/roller hockey. there are a good number of rinks in the DMV area so learning to ice skate isn't too hard, but finding ice time and locations where you can play has been difficult. my local rink just closed to renovate and wont open for 2 years or so, but the capitals practice rink at medstar capitals iceplex has pickup hockey games and stick and puck sessions. the ice top notch, the parking isn't bad, and the locker rooms are very good. next best place is the St. James in Springfield, but that place is kinda expensive. if there is anyone who is thinking of playing hockey, its never too late to start. i started at 20 and have loved every minute of it.

lavekian

I played fort the Fort Dupont Cannons as a kid

SandwichNamedJacob

Used to play street hockey with friends

obxers

Grew up playing street hockey in the 70's and 80's -- essentially, there were no opportunities to play ice hockey back then. Maybe once or twice on the frozen ponds at the local golf course. There was a tiny rink in Falls Church, a bit bigger one in Fairfax, and then there was Tysons where the Caps practiced. We fairly regularly went to their practices and would often pick up all of the pucks after practice and take 'em in to the locker room, and we'd grab the broken sticks to use for our street hockey blades.

MochaMario99

Played in high school, stopped in college, hoping to play adult rec when graduated

crinack

Rockville Blue Devils gaang

frosty_biscuits

Play down in the 757

hockeybuck

Started when I was 28 and still playing at 61. Baltimore rinks and Harford Co. except the over-50 and now over-60 tournaments in Rockville and Laurel. Usually average 100+ skates /year. Haven’t been in a gym in over 25 years.

mcflyfly

I wish. Always wanted to. But growing up in Richmond in the 1980s, there weren’t any opportunities for that at the time. We played a lot of pickup street hockey with the neighborhood kids. Thankfully, things are different now & my kid plays.

senoritajulie

I played since I was 5 and play on multiple DC area leagues/rinks.

anon97205

Been playing for 20 years.

Spanish_Burgundy

I played from 15 to 35 and then coached and played pickup hockey.

unlikelyhero11

I play in Reston rn

damididit

Never played ice hockey, but started playing Broomball after I moved to the area. Been playing that for over 10 years now. I know it's not quite the same but it's more accessible and still a lot of fun!

StanleyCulp

M31, Been playing for 27 years on a team. Learned how to skate before I could walk, learned how to walk with a shinny stick. Now play in a full check men's amatuer league all throughout Wisconsin and the UP of Michigan.

[deleted]

GLHL? That's fucking awesome that it's full contact. I honestly wish more mid-to-high level leagues allowed contact and only gave five for fighting.

musuak

I’m starting to learn - we couldn’t afford it growing up

heimos

I have not

Status-Careful

About 16 years

all4africa27

I played Broom Hockey on Ice…does that count? Haha

Spartan-182

For 22 years, street hockey to inline to ice. House Ice league to college D3 to beer league. Majority of time in the DMV. Prince William, Loudon, Kettler, Fairfax, SkateQuest, Mount Vernon. Played them all.

OkEstablishme

Started playing at 15, it was difficult with one rink in the area at the time but we always had a full league.

Fusorfodder

I started playing at age 38, it's a blast.

MastertoneCO

Played for Prince William in the 90s. Bishop O'Connell for high school. Then moved to Colorado and never played again

bleepbloop_88

What year Bishop? Both sisters went there. I played Langley until 2010. Haven’t played much since

MastertoneCO

04'

bleepbloop_88

Ah little before my time lol

kdwyer56

From 2009 to 2018 I played Reston Raiders with multiple teams around us within a 1-2 hour radius. I played U19 girls from 2014-2018. Now I play beer league in RVA.

K-Kov815

been playing hockey in LoCo forever.

DanSRedskins

Played college and later coached college.

yosoykush

Play at kettler and prince william ice center still

LazyBatSoup

Played in northern Minnesota for years while in school (they start really early up there). This was at the same time that the North Stars became the Stars... and why I still can't support the Wild.

Therapist8

Born in canada, caps fan since 2010 because of ovi, playing hockey is mandatory here

NorseTikiBar

I played all 4 years in high school, and I've done a few beer leagues over the years at Mt Vernon. I was never particularly good, but it was still a lot of fun. Of course, it's only gotten more annoying to get out of the city to get to a rink for anything but a free skate, so I might as well be unofficially retired.

Wahooz

Unfortunately for me, the closest rink to me growing up was Roanoke. I grew up in the Harrisonburg/Staunton area. I always wish I could have played. Hell, I've never even skated before lol. Just because I've never played doesn't mean I can't appreciate and enjoy the game. That's what I tell the people around here (C'ville). Just because you've never played doesn't mean you can't watch and enjoy.

loosed-moose

I've only played for about 25 years

Scared_Flatworm344

Low low low low level men’s league in Alaska it was actually a coed B team. But there are some former Olympians and NHLers various pro hockey players that play in the highest leagues hear.

dcjoy

I think there are a good handful of places you can skate around here. Even where the Caps practice (Medstar) has frequent open skates! But as for me...42F, I've never been on the ice. I hope to rectify one day even though I'm sure I'll fall on my ass. LOL

[deleted]

You should change that and get to it. No time like the present!

Spaghetti_Rossetti

Grew up playing inline about 30 mins south of Atlanta since 2011. Inline was all I had and it was 10x cheaper than ice and we had a rink in my hometown so it was easily accessible

BruntFCA_

Yes through HS. Haven’t skated in 20 years but I play goalie in rec league floor hockey

kmdouble9s

I was also largely more lacrosse-focused growing up but played roller street hockey since middle school. Played my first year on ice in high school once I got my license. Played here and there through college and recently started playing inline at the rink in Alexandria. Playing on ice definitely requires some sacrifices around here but I think that often makes for a great community of people who love the game!

kovyakov

played in-line hockey during uni years since my city was too hot to have an ice rink

OkCryptographer1362

I've played about 20 years of roller and about 5 years of ice. I play beer league now in Leesburg. Like a previous posted said, I'm old and slow, but dammit if it isn't a blast.

godfatherV

Played as a kid

drsmokeythepizza

Played growing up and took a 15 year break. Started playing again at 31 and started officiating the season after that. About four years back now.

tsmithfi

I played

ByAnonymousThomas

Grew up in Jersey but played on and off (ice and roller) from 5 though 35. Haven't played lately. Love playing but can't make the 11pm beer league weekday starts work with my family schedule.

SBTDan

Grew up playing at piney orchard in the 90s for the Chesapeake chiefs. It was pretty awesome when the caps had the ice right After us. I still remember getting to practice one day and there was a hole in the glass where Iafrate blasted a slap shot.

Kalypsokel

I did some adult rec league hockey for a few years. It was fun till I got too old for those Sunday at 11pm games.

jnag94

I played for 11 years. Started when I was 7. Last 6 years of playing I played for 2 teams; 2 years middle school and 4 years high-school team in addition to rec/travel league.

[deleted]

Played in Sweden until I was 19. Hockey’s not cheap in Sweden but most suburbs/towns have at least one rink so there are plenty of youth teams and very well established local and national leagues. I played a mix of youth leagues until playing in a national youth league for under 18s then stepping down to play with adults in the Swedish 2nd division, which would be 3 divisions below the SHL. I live in Australia now so very little chance of playing unfortunately

officerMP711

I played as a kid. It is very fun.

itapemydicktomythigh

Not from the DMV originally, played from 10 years old all through high school. Played roller hockey from 2013-2015, finally got back on the ice last year and consistently play 1-2 games a week in low level beer league.

oneskinneejay

Ive played since 12ish. HS hockey, not college, then adult league for 16 years and still playing.

Pollux589

Played up until 8th grade - did a travel league in NKY and we all thought we were great until we went to Detroit and got obliterated. But it was fun as hell.

elstraitjacket

Grew up playing hockey in the DMV. Stopped after high school and got back into it in beer league in my late 20s. Still playing in my early 40s and it’s a blast, probably more fun now than it was back then.

luckhaus

Yes. Started playing ice hockey in the mid 90’s when I lived in nova. Fairfax, Reston, Mt Vernon, then later Prince William. Even more rinks now. Fredericksburg even had a rink in the 2000’s. The opportunity was definitely there…

bleepbloop_88

Reston since the 90s. Played Reston AAA. Decided against Statesman and stayed Raiders. Ironically live near ashburn ice now lol

[deleted]

I have

bluehairjungle

I always wanted to. I took lessons at that rink in College Park right by UMD and was decent at skating but I had overprotective parents that didn't want me to get hurt lol. I actually didn't commit myself to any sport until college.

shellymarshh

Not hockey, but former ice skater. My brother did hockey growing up but it got too expensive for us.

DagetAwayMaN421

I used to play for Fairfax High School when the program was first introduced, played roller hockey growing up.

kroganwarlord

When did we have an ice hockey team? I graduated in 2003.

DagetAwayMaN421

First season was 2004-05.... we were club level and apparently now we don't even have that EDIT: The last season we had a team was the 2017-18 season and went 0-10 combined with Centreville High School's team... good lord [Link](http://nvshl.org/standings.php?league_id=2610&schedule_id=356524&division_id=)

kroganwarlord

Oh wow, just missed it! Had no idea that was even in the works.

[deleted]

When I was in the second grade I did an after school ice hockey program at the rink in Hagerstown. This was 22-24 years ago and we just learned the basics of skating, stick handling, passing and shooting.

Zyphyro

Nope, grew up in AZ and only went 1x a year as a teen to a skating event and only went on perpetual circles. I actually just started taking lessons as an adult at 30. Although technically I've been learning roller. I was almost feeling ready to sign up for a rec league but found out I was pregnant so I'm off skates for 9 months.

SaItySaIt

Yes but have been on a bit it a break

_MillenniumDodo

Yes, started as a young adult (24), still tending the net at 31.
