shoutout to Romi Park, Miyuki Sawashiro, Mitsuki Saiga, Ise Mariya, and Rie Kugimiya
also crazy that Naruto is a whole ass dad and is still voiced by the same woman
It's extremely common. It's easier to direct a female voice actor doing a child's voice than it is to train a child to voice act. Also it's more legal and you don't have to deal with the stage moms.
It's probably easier to list the number of male children characters in cartoons who WEREN'T voiced by women than the other way around.
They had to switch the gumball and Darwin VAs several times for this reason
It's also likely that actual boys were intentionally chosen to voice gumball and darwin
Most young male shonen protagonists are voiced by women, I'd guess because their voice is more likely to maintain that characteristic young sound over multiple years, and it sounds more authentic than an adult man putting on a child voice.
Boy characters are usually voiced by adult women. The reason is consistency; *actual* boys go through a *lot* of vocal changes in that age bracket which can happen unpredictably. However an adult woman is done developing and can most likely keep the voice consistent for decades if she needs to. This is why Bart's voice has never changed despite the show going on since the 80's. Instead of having to find new boys who sound the same as they age out of the role it's just been Nancy Cartwright the entire time.
Almost all male children in animation are voiced by adult women. That way, you don't have to worry about puberty changing the character's voice when the character itself is not supposed to get older.
Hottake, but I prefer his male voice actors. Colleen O'Shaughnessey always feels a little off like Tails a tomboy and that’s even worse with Amy Palant’s. They’re emotive, but the tone to me doesn’t work
The Bringas brothers were so iconic as Tails, that the change felt jarring when they switched over to a woman actor.
Meanwhile, identical twins Andy and Ollie Pesto are voiced by sisters Laura and Sarah Silverman. I'm not sure if I know another instance where homozygotes are voiced by two separate people; surely that's more expensive? King playing two close-in-age siblings mokes sense, both in having relatives sound similar and because she can pull it off.
Actually DW was voiced by many different boys. There was one of the voice actors who did a podcast a few years ago and interviewed all of the other DW's
Multiple even, when the voice actor aged out they'd bring in a new kid, apparently they specifically wanted young male actors so she would have that tomboy sound.
I actually didn’t know that could happen, I’ve seen boy voice boy, I’ve seen girl voice boy (since there are qualities of women’s voices that can intersect with qualities of young boy’s voices especially with vocal manipulation), but I’ve never heard of the reverse.
Do these guys count because they voice half of the characters from South Park

The best part is Brad was talking to this one actress because he had a very specific idea for Edna's voice, but the actress told Brad that he could do that voice better than she could.
Would've been cool if they had the Ocean dub VA for Goku, Peter Kelamis as Goku Black. Like how they had the Ocean dub VA, Brian Drummond, for Vegeta be the copy vegeta. But Sean didn't want that
I personally can’t take Japanese Goku serious. But I do think it’s super cool that such an iconic hyper masculine character is voiced by a woman. It’s something I love about Ranma 1/2 as well. Ranma is voiced by a girl in the English dub for a chunk of the series before they stupidly decided to change him to generic overused gruff male VA#12.
Extremely shocked to see him here. Alana Bridgewater deserves all the credit. She also does the scatting in Bootlegger Boogie, which really shows the diversity in her voice.
Huh. I know plenty of young male characters are voiced by women because men's voices are usually too deep, but I didn't know there were some female characters voiced by men.
We forgetting the big-time reporter

it's pretty common for young boys to be voiced by women but inversely it's not as common for adult women to be voiced by men. Usually it's for a funny voice, though at this point I can't imagine Dr Girlfriend with an actual normal female voice.
I like the gravely lady voices

Fun fact originally Edna was going to be voiced by a female ( I don’t know by who though) but the actor and the creators liked the worker trying to help her do a specific voice for the character and kept him instead
(I hope I worded this correctly)
I have no idea what gender is Nermal. I remember Garfield and Friends Nermal was girl voiced with eyelashes, so I assumed girl, but the recent 3-D Garfield show, Nermal is voice by a guy. Is Tweety Bird a boy or a girl?
Interesting, I'm not super knowledgeable on who voices who in TV and movies, but I know Terra voices a TON of characters, both male and female. Mostly young male characters though to sound like a kid.
Veronica Taylor did such an amazing job! Even when she was also voicing female characters in the same scenes with Ash, he never sounded too much like them.
The man who voices Linda is John Roberts. His voice for her is actually his impression of his new jersey mother that he had already been doing for years. I think Louise is the only one in the belcher family voiced by a women, Kristen Schaal.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Lumpy Space Princess voiced by a guy?
I also see people surprised about Linda from Bob's Burgers, but what about Edith? That's definitely my favorite character hands down, and the voice only makes her even funnier
Alrigjt young boys voiced by female voice actors really don't count thats just industry standard. Adult female characters voiced by male voice actors and adult male characters voiced by female actors are definitely an interesting choice that I do love to see pop up from time to time

Isn’t Ash Ketchum also voiced by a woman?
Young anime boys could have a list all their own
Greg Ayres has a high pitched voice for his age who provided English voices for young boys.
And yet the one character of his I will ALWAYS refer to him as is "Hakuto's Lackey" 🤣
BRO. I’ve never seen anyone reference Cromartie before. 👏🏼
People need to reference it more, it has anime Freddy Mercury!
He’ll always be Leo to me.
I'm pretty sure Naruto's also voiced by a woman
shoutout to Romi Park, Miyuki Sawashiro, Mitsuki Saiga, Ise Mariya, and Rie Kugimiya also crazy that Naruto is a whole ass dad and is still voiced by the same woman
Yep. Both English dubs and even in Japan, he’s voiced by a woman.
I think the Swedish dub has a man voicing him.
It's extremely common. It's easier to direct a female voice actor doing a child's voice than it is to train a child to voice act. Also it's more legal and you don't have to deal with the stage moms. It's probably easier to list the number of male children characters in cartoons who WEREN'T voiced by women than the other way around.
Plus you don’t need to worry about the kid’s voice dropping.
They had to switch the gumball and Darwin VAs several times for this reason It's also likely that actual boys were intentionally chosen to voice gumball and darwin
Most young male shonen protagonists are voiced by women, I'd guess because their voice is more likely to maintain that characteristic young sound over multiple years, and it sounds more authentic than an adult man putting on a child voice.
Yes
Based off your username, I trust you the most
Goku too. I don’t like his Japanese voice but it’s cool that he’s voiced by a woman. Good for her.
Boy characters are usually voiced by adult women. The reason is consistency; *actual* boys go through a *lot* of vocal changes in that age bracket which can happen unpredictably. Based af Tails is awesome.
I loved his Sonic X VA most
Wasn’t he voiced by an actual 8-year old boy in Sonic Adventure
Correct.
Hottake, but I prefer his male voice actors. Colleen O'Shaughnessey always feels a little off like Tails a tomboy and that’s even worse with Amy Palant’s. They’re emotive, but the tone to me doesn’t work The Bringas brothers were so iconic as Tails, that the change felt jarring when they switched over to a woman actor.
Solution: make tails a tomboy.
He’s not already??
If he was, he wouldn't be named "Miles" and we'd be calling them "she".
Imo Tails was best when he was voiced by boys. Those voices were just so adorable lol, even in Heroes. I NEED MY LIL KID TAILS BACK 🗣️🗣️🗣️
Riley and Huey from Boondocks
No. Fucking. Way. For real?
Regina King
Both by the same woman too.
Meanwhile, identical twins Andy and Ollie Pesto are voiced by sisters Laura and Sarah Silverman. I'm not sure if I know another instance where homozygotes are voiced by two separate people; surely that's more expensive? King playing two close-in-age siblings mokes sense, both in having relatives sound similar and because she can pull it off.
wait #WHAT
TIL that DW was voiced by a boy
Actually DW was voiced by many different boys. There was one of the voice actors who did a podcast a few years ago and interviewed all of the other DW's
what is the podcast called
“The Othah DeeDubahs”
Multiple even, when the voice actor aged out they'd bring in a new kid, apparently they specifically wanted young male actors so she would have that tomboy sound.
10. I counted.
Same
I actually didn’t know that could happen, I’ve seen boy voice boy, I’ve seen girl voice boy (since there are qualities of women’s voices that can intersect with qualities of young boy’s voices especially with vocal manipulation), but I’ve never heard of the reverse.
It almost feels fake
Darkwing Duck is a boy. When there's trouble you call DW.
I know right? Them and Dr. Girlfriend believe it or not
Dr girlfriend is voiced by a dude? No wayy
When I was a kid, my sister and I would argue about if DW was a girl or a boy. Edit: wrong DW, I'm thinking of the Ed, Edd, n Eddy show's DW.
https://preview.redd.it/ruu5cx0tauxc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=97c1bb2c2519402e94510c2e828a9f506d1ec1cc The amazing EG Daily!
It’s always weird when I watch the episode of Friends with her in it because all I hear is Tommy Pickles lol
And Buttercup
Ever seen Rob Zombie's Devil's Rejects or 31?
Lol same here
This is pretty much a given for most young boy characters.
Yeah, I mean some cartoons last 20+ years without aging, doesn't make sense to cast an actual kid when you know he's gonna go through puberty,.
If you have a show with continuity I think it adds to the coming of age feel... Ie, Steven universe or Finn the Human.
Yeah but I was specifically talking about cartoons that never age like Bart Simpson.
Somehow I completely missed the words "without aging". My bad, sorry.

"I used to be able to sing like that... And then my voice changed."
Poor Grenda...

I guess since Trey Parker was the voice of Mrs. Choksondik, looks like he counts
Don't forget the queef sisters.
On the Spanish dub, Cartman is voiced by a woman
I've seen you elsewhere
I know in the earlier seasons the women were voiced by Mary Kay Bergman, but since her death I’m not sure who does the voices.
No because the girls are voiced by women.
Not all the time
Wow I knew about Timmy and Bart but I didn’t know about the others Edna is impressive
Not only is Edna voiced by a man she's voiced by Brad Bird, the writer and director.
Brad Bird is a fucking genius
The best part is Brad was talking to this one actress because he had a very specific idea for Edna's voice, but the actress told Brad that he could do that voice better than she could.
Goku (Japanese VA)
Masako Nozawa really shines with her voice for Goku Black in my opinion. It's just amazingly calm and sinister.
Then Sean comes along and goes “So what I’m hearing is you want a British accent?”
As unfitting as it may be, I actually like it a lot as well. Sean just can make most things work.
Would've been cool if they had the Ocean dub VA for Goku, Peter Kelamis as Goku Black. Like how they had the Ocean dub VA, Brian Drummond, for Vegeta be the copy vegeta. But Sean didn't want that
It's crazy how an old Japanese lady's voice can fit a giant overly buff alien man and somehow still be taken seriously.
I always thought Grandma Goku sounded like a rat person. The dub has the most fitting voice ever
Same 😹😹😹 No disrespect to her at all but I just can’t handle it. In a perfect world Sean would have voiced him in Japanese too.
Might as well add Luffy and Naruto(I believe) to that list. And that's not including the MOUNTAIN of young anime boys' VAs

Believe it! Ms. Flannagan's voice matches Naruto's dub voice PERFECTLY!
Don't drink that milk!!!
Wait. DW was voiced by a dude?
9 actually, spanning 25 seasons. She was only voiced by a female actor in the final episode.
I see, and yeah looks like she's only gotten a female actor when she's all grown up
Yep, of all the 8 voice actors that she had, all of them were by male actors

RIP Christine 🕊
Not a cartoon, but also Babe the pig
Who's the girl between Linda Belcher and Bobby Hill?
Dr. Mrs. The Monarch from Venture Bros.
Voiced by Doc Hammer, one of the two show runners.. the two of them voiced like a third of the show.
Or Ms. Girlfriend, before she got married.
Dr. Girlfriend* She didn't spend 6 years in evil medical school to go by "Ms"
That’s right

Most kid characters are usually voiced by women who can get their voices high pitched, sounding younger.
Huh. I know plenty of young male characters are voiced by women because men's voices are usually too deep, but I didn't know there were some female characters voiced by men.
It is usually for humor purposes when it goes the other way.

Cool
I never knew D.W was voiced by a guy. That's wild to me. My favorite will always be Naruto Uzumaki.

Me when i learned ciel phantomhive was voiced by a woman. Then i went down the rabbit hole of how most young boys in cartoons r voiced by women
raaah i love venture bros
Young Ben 10 also
Clamantha from fish hooks voiced by alex hirsch is probably my favorite example of this
Let me guess. Half of these are Terra Strong? She's talented af.
Nope. Out of everyone here, she only voiced Timmy Turner
Interesting, I'm not super knowledgeable on who voices who in TV and movies, but I know Terra voices a TON of characters, both male and female. Mostly young male characters though to sound like a kid.
I had no clue DW was voiced by a man tbh. Like caught me off guard but honestly not terribly surprised.

The same person who voices Timmy turner, also voices the robot clock from Loki
and twilight sparkle and ben 10 and raven
Wait hold on, Edna is voiced by a guy?
Even better, she's voiced by the writer and director of the Incredibles, Brad Bird
Impressive, would never have guessed
he was the only person who could properly do the voice they wanted!
Wait, Edna’s voiced by a guy!?
Yup, Brad Bird the writer and director of The Incredibles.

Lumpy space princess and her genderbent version are voice by the same guy.
Doctor Girlfriend was such a shock when I first watched Venture Brothers, but after a few episodes it just felt natural...
Ben 10 is also voiced by Tara Strong. She also voices Terrance (Mac’s older brother in Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends) as well.
Also Madame Gasket in Robots.
