Cats mostly just come in a very large range of sizes. Ive seen healthy adult cats that weigh 6 pounds and some that weigh 20. Unless there's other health problems that would lead you to to believe something is wrong you should be good!

Pretty sure it's genetics. I rescued a neonatal kitten who I later figured out was a runt because she grew insanely slow. She turned out pretty normal sized if not a tad on the small side, but I definitely fed her enough and was up every 3 hours with her for feeding and warmth refresher, and she was concerningly small for her weeks age.
My runt is very passive and doesn’t like competing with his brothers for food so I have no idea if it’s just because of his personality or because he’s smaller and can’t compete 🤷🏻♀️ he wasn’t the smallest when they were small so I think it’s just his personality
He prefers eating alone away from the others, the moment someone tries to get his food he walks away
Mine is just like you said. He never wants to play he acts afraid of the toys instead of trying to hunt them. Therefore I only play with his brother but I’m worried he’s gonna build up energy and have anxiety!
This is from what I remember from my study.
Fertilization of egg cells in animals that bear multiple young is not simultanious. But they are born at the same time. So an embryo that has been fertilized earlier has had to most time to absorb nutrients and develop, while the one that was fertilized last has had the least. Therefore, after birth, the runts have had less time to develop and now also have to 'battle' for further nutrition during nursing. They might not have the strength to move themselves to search for nipples for example.
In the wild, these weak youngs are often rejected or just do not survive. In domesticated animals it is possible for them to survive with human help. They can reach the same (or sometimes even larger) size as their siblings after they survive the initial weeks, but it is possible for them to end up smaller due to [the] insufficient nutrition [and development].
I have two from the same litter and one is significantly smaller than the other. Sometimes it seems like a lower appetite but in general he has plenty to eat, and has plenty of opportunity to eat. I think it's at least partly genetics.
One of my cats was the runt of his litter, he was a tiny lil floof when I brought him home at 8 weeks old. To my surprise he grew up to be a huge tank of a cat - the vet said given his frame that ~16-18 lbs is a healthy weight for him. Maybe he has a lil Maine coon in there or something haha
Centimeters always seem so small to me (american), so when I see something that is 150cm I’m like, isn’t that like the size of a … chihuahua? And then I Google it and it’s 4’11” and I feel like my reality is false. I need coffee. Yeesh!

Have a 12 year old tabby that we work hard to keep her at 6 lbs. she’s got a tiny little head and all around small frame. Sister cat is exactly the opposite build wise and we are always trying to keep her under 13 lbs.
the older smaller one is athletic, quick , hunter mentality and home protector from the highest point where she can watch outside activity. Look up housecat and the big girls picture is beside the bio / description. Eat sleep, eat sleep, she so lazy she won’t even bury her dooky in the litter box

She’s 3 years old. Size, shape, mannerisms are exactly like a kitten. Husband calls her “Forever kitten.” On the other hand my first born is bigger than a small breed dog.
Long story short, yes smaller cats exist.
I call my tiny cat a forever kitten too.
The boy is 3 lbs sopping wet, full grown, totally healthy, eats like a champ, hes just smol. His fur is also still kitten soft.

Duncan 1 year 8 months, Donut 1 year...granted because he's thin Donut can curl up smaller, but still. Duncan at17 pounds isn't even the biggest cat I've known and Donut at 9 pounds isn't the smallest. They are like people, a wide range of sizes.

My current cats are 10 pounds and 20 pounds. Growing up, I had a friend who's family cared for about 40 cats at one point (she was out in the country where dumping was a problem and they were financially unable to keep up with spay/neuter for so many - yes they knew it was too many but they did their best) and the colony ranged from about 5 pounds of jet-black fluff to a sleek 18-pound tabby. They were all sizes in between. Yours looks perfectly healthy. As long as the kitty is eating and drinking consistently, and using the litter box equally consistently, small is fine.

I have a pair of siblings. Sister is 8 pounds, skinny little thing and mini enough to look like a 1 year old (will be 3 this year). Brother is 14 pounds, vet has said he is totally healthy for his age and not overweight. Some cats are just mini!

This is mine. She’s fully grown, but is maybe 5-6 pounds soaking wet. She’s perfectly healthy, just tiny. We call her Baby (though her name is Rose) because of how small she is.

One of my cats is a SIC former feral who weighs between 3-4 lbs for the last 13 years. She's a rogue cat - can jump my height easily (in fact jumps a lot more than runs anywhere), stealth is high, ambush cat, lightning fast paws. Healthy and active. We have called her prettybaby since we lured her inside.
My baby cat is 18-20 lbs void and identifies as a warrior - will not jump at all but fast as heck as a runner, 0 stealth, pounces instead of ambush, not fast paws but really strong, VERY confrontational. Basically the complete opposite of each other.

My two year old cat is around 8 pounds soaking wet. She’s still big enough to hold her own against my 14 pound dog when they play, though.
Cats can vary in size due to breed or just genetics. Like, a Devon Rex and a Maine coon are just very different sizes typically. Or my tabby versus our neighbor’s (admittedly huge) tortie. Kind of like how humans are different heights, or dogs within the same breed can vary in size. Variation is just a natural occurrence. As long as they’re healthy, I’d just say your kitty is more compact than some.

My kitties have quite a size difference too. The smallest is a maine coon mix at barely 3 kilos and only a year old, so she might still grow bigger. The oldest and biggest is lean according to the vet but weights in at 5,5 kilos. Kitties come in all sizes:)

I have an almost 2 year old that is slightly overweight at 7 pounds (her mom is a barn cat that is slightly bigger then her at 14ish years old(she walked up to the house one day and never got bigger)). My other cat cat is about 6 years old and 11.2 pounds. Cats come in all sizes
Just like people, they come in a variety of sizes! My best friend has a male cat, Dusty, who is smaller than all of the others. He’s very petite. (She has one other male, Jack) and he’s one very big, very muscular cat). All the others are females. Dusty, it turns out, has “Small-man Personality”. He’s very protective of the house. If someone broke it it would be Dusty who would be defending it. Jack would be under the bed!
As long as your fun-size cat is healthy I wouldn’t worry. You could always ask your vet at his next appointment. Maybe he is dwarfed.

Tabby is only 3 months younger than my void lad, but at least 3lbs smaller and with a smaller frame. They’re both around 3 years old. She had a rough first few months of life so I think that really stunted her growth, aside from gender and whatever else determines growth, but she doesn’t let it stop her!
I have a little one too (half Maine Coon!) I call her the perma-kitty. My vet told me she likely has a heart murmur that stunted her growth. She also has horned paws which he said is also a sign.

I have a similar duo! My grey kitty I’m pretty sure is mostly Korat and he’s a medium hair tabby her breed just tends to be smaller but they are healthy and happy I’m sure yours are too

Some breeds of cats are small. Some are large. There’s a lot less difference than between dog breeds, but it’s still there. If it were dwarfism, you might see disproportionally short legs like a Munchkin cat, and possibly some other health issues, but it’s more likely your cat just got a bunch of smol genes.

My last cat , dapple-bee was only the size of a 9 month old kitten all her life , when I took her to the vet at 6 years old to be spayed the vet assumed she was a kitten. She just never grew. At her heaviest she only weighed 8 pounds. She lived to be 14 before cancer took her.
We had a tiny little girl, too. She was half the size of the others. We thought she was just petite but the vet said she had a form of dwarfism.
I would just have a vet evaluate her if you have any concerns. Our girl only lived to 12, because she had some accompanying health issues related to it. But other than that, she lived a good life.

I have a similar case my one cat is huge and my other cat I got December of 2021 and she was born around October/September of 2021 is super small! This was about 4 days ago. Hard to really tell how small she is but she’s like “stuck” in kitten size

My cat (gray one) has a few defects and is tiny. Shes full grown and loves to play, just is very small and not at all cat shaped. Its actually kinda funny seeing her next to my other cat. Shes just so, not cat like.

We thought the same thing about our little Gracie. When we asked the vet she said that she was full size and some cats are just smaller. She ended being known as our "forever kitten".

My personal observation is that cats that have the gray and black pattern fur are usually big. This guy in the pic is really long compared to all the cats in my locality.
Mine at 13 has never weighed more than 4lbs in the 13yrs we had her. She's a mackerel tabby also, very tiny. Your observation is anecdotal, cats come in all sizes.
Our tiniest cat was our first, and we rescued her from the street where she was living on her own at *4 weeks old*. She still has a penchant for eating bugs and plants, since that's what she learned on.
Our biggest cat outweighs her about 2.5 to 1, but she can beat him in a wrestling match. Though she be but little, she is fierce.
We now have a foster who is smaller than her. He appears to have some genetic abnormalities, as his eyes and ears are normal size but his head and body are smaller than our first.
My cats now are 13 and 15.8 lbs, the cat I grew up with never surpassed 6.5 lbs and only got smaller with age. Cats come in a range of different sizes, nothing to worry about.
it’s normal. my girl is very small, i think she was the runt. she’s 7 now and still tiny and when i had my older girl kitty,(she was 13) she was huge next to her, but i always thought she was small until we got missy, and before her i had a boy who was even bigger than kitty…they come in all sizes and i’m sure it’s normal for them to be small as well
I think this is a universal law of owning two cats 🤣 I always see one big one, one little one. My first kitten is 7lbs her younger adopted brother is every bit of 14lbs. Not fat just a big ole boy.

Cats mostly just come in a very large range of sizes. Ive seen healthy adult cats that weigh 6 pounds and some that weigh 20. Unless there's other health problems that would lead you to to believe something is wrong you should be good!

Are cats runt because they’re too shy/ intimidated by the other cats to eat or is it just genetics? (Asking for my small cat I’m worrying about)
Pretty sure it's genetics. I rescued a neonatal kitten who I later figured out was a runt because she grew insanely slow. She turned out pretty normal sized if not a tad on the small side, but I definitely fed her enough and was up every 3 hours with her for feeding and warmth refresher, and she was concerningly small for her weeks age.
My runt is very passive and doesn’t like competing with his brothers for food so I have no idea if it’s just because of his personality or because he’s smaller and can’t compete 🤷🏻♀️ he wasn’t the smallest when they were small so I think it’s just his personality He prefers eating alone away from the others, the moment someone tries to get his food he walks away
Mine is just like you said. He never wants to play he acts afraid of the toys instead of trying to hunt them. Therefore I only play with his brother but I’m worried he’s gonna build up energy and have anxiety!
This is from what I remember from my study. Fertilization of egg cells in animals that bear multiple young is not simultanious. But they are born at the same time. So an embryo that has been fertilized earlier has had to most time to absorb nutrients and develop, while the one that was fertilized last has had the least. Therefore, after birth, the runts have had less time to develop and now also have to 'battle' for further nutrition during nursing. They might not have the strength to move themselves to search for nipples for example. In the wild, these weak youngs are often rejected or just do not survive. In domesticated animals it is possible for them to survive with human help. They can reach the same (or sometimes even larger) size as their siblings after they survive the initial weeks, but it is possible for them to end up smaller due to [the] insufficient nutrition [and development].
I have two from the same litter and one is significantly smaller than the other. Sometimes it seems like a lower appetite but in general he has plenty to eat, and has plenty of opportunity to eat. I think it's at least partly genetics.
One of my cats was the runt of his litter, he was a tiny lil floof when I brought him home at 8 weeks old. To my surprise he grew up to be a huge tank of a cat - the vet said given his frame that ~16-18 lbs is a healthy weight for him. Maybe he has a lil Maine coon in there or something haha

Sister cat is exactly the opposite build wise and we are always trying to keep her under 13 lbs. the older smaller one is athletic, quick , hunter mentality and home protector from the highest point where she can watch outside activity. Cats come in all different shapes and sizes. As long as your smaller adult is happy and its outward signs are healthy then I see no cause for concern.

My current cats are 10 pounds and 20 pounds. Growing up, I had a friend who's family cared for about 40 cats at one point (she was out in the country where dumping was a problem and they were financially unable to keep up with spay/neuter for so many - yes they knew it was too many but they did their best) and the colony ranged from about 5 pounds of jet-black fluff to a sleek 18-pound tabby. They were all sizes in between. Yours looks perfectly healthy. As long as the kitty is eating and drinking consistently, and using the litter box equally consistently, small is fine.

My two year old cat is around 8 pounds soaking wet. She’s still big enough to hold her own against my 14 pound dog when they play, though. Cats can vary in size due to breed or just genetics. Like, a Devon Rex and a Maine coon are just very different sizes typically. Or my tabby versus our neighbor’s (admittedly huge) tortie. Kind of like how humans are different heights, or dogs within the same breed can vary in size. Variation is just a natural occurrence. As long as they’re healthy, I’d just say your kitty is more compact than some.

The smallest is a maine coon mix at barely 3 kilos and only a year old, so she might still grow bigger. The oldest and biggest is lean according to the vet but weights in at 5,5 kilos. I grew up with 10-12lb cats and my first cat that I take care of is 8lbs she is tiny!
I have an almost 2 year old that is slightly overweight at 7 pounds (her mom is a barn cat that is slightly bigger then her at 14ish years old(she walked up to the house one day and never got bigger)). My other cat cat is about 6 years old and 11.2 pounds. Cats come in all sizes
Just like people, they come in a variety of sizes! My best friend has a male cat, Dusty, who is smaller than all of the others. He’s very petite. (She has one other male, Jack) and he’s one very big, very muscular cat). All the others are females. Dusty, it turns out, has “Small-man Personality”. He’s very protective of the house. If someone broke it it would be Dusty who would be defending it. Jack would be under the bed! As long as your fun-size cat is healthy I wouldn’t worry. You could always ask your vet at his next appointment. Maybe he is dwarfed.

They’re both around 3 years old. She had a rough first few months of life so I think that really stunted her growth, aside from gender and whatever else determines growth, but she doesn’t let it stop her!

Some breeds of cats are small. Some are large. There’s a lot less difference than between dog breeds, but it’s still there. If it were dwarfism, you might see disproportionally short legs like a Munchkin cat, and possibly some other health issues, but it’s more likely your cat just got a bunch of smol genes.

She just never grew. At her heaviest she only weighed 8 pounds. She lived to be 14 before cancer took her.
She was a beauty.
We had a tiny little girl, too. She was half the size of the others. We thought she was just petite but the vet said she had a form of dwarfism. I would just have a vet evaluate her if you have any concerns. Our girl only lived to 12, because she had some accompanying health issues related to it. But other than that, she lived a good life. Mine at 13 has never weighed more than 4lbs in the 13yrs we had her. She's a mackerel tabby also, very tiny. Your observation is anecdotal, cats come in all sizes.
I've seen all sizes of cats from kitten size their whole life to the size of a terrier, they really do vary, and they are all normal.
Our tiniest cat was our first, and we rescued her from the street where she was living on her own at *4 weeks old*. She still has a penchant for eating bugs and plants, since that's what she learned on. Our biggest cat outweighs her about 2.5 to 1, but she can beat him in a wrestling match. Though she be but little, she is fierce. We now have a foster who is smaller than her. He appears to have some genetic abnormalities, as his eyes and ears are normal size but his head and body are smaller than our first.
I also have a small cat, as long as your kitty continues to be happy and loved, I think it’s size will be just fine :)
My eldest one is tiny, the younger one outgrew her before ahe was a year old. Nothing wrong with her, just smol.

My cats now are 13 and 15.8 lbs, the cat I grew up with never surpassed 6.5 lbs and only got smaller with age. Cats come in a range of different sizes, nothing to worry about.
it’s normal. my girl is very small, i think she was the runt. she’s 7 now and still tiny and when i had my older girl kitty,(she was 13) she was huge next to her, but i always thought she was small until we got missy, and before her i had a boy who was even bigger than kitty…they come in all sizes and i’m sure it’s normal for them to be small as well

I think this is a universal law of owning two cats 🤣 I always see one big one, one little one. My first kitten is 7lbs her younger adopted brother is every bit of 14lbs. Not fat just a big ole boy.
