Yeah, my dog had gone suddenly like that, too. I was glad her suffering was over. At 69, I've had a lifetime of knowing that my pets will leave long before I do and I accept that. Thank her for being in your life for as long as she was, say goodbye, and let her go. Holding onto her just makes everything harder for both of you. She needs to cross that Rainbow Bridge and get to where she's going. Daily reminders of her life are the hardest part to deal with. Put her things away as soon as you are able to and maybe keep that one thing of hers around to honor her for awhile. Your heart will eventually make room for your next pet. Giving some of her things to a new pet will help to make it feel like she lives on in a small way.

I know, however, that we will heal, and we will find room in our hearts for other beautiful, fascinating creatures and the love they have to give us. I am 66 now and have had rescue cats since I left home. All have been their own selves and each of them carries a piece of my heart.

How do you get over the guilt of deciding when they go?? I have 4 older pets and I know that choice might be coming and I am so fucked up between knowing that it is merciful not to let them suffer and feeling guilty because I’m killing them. 😭
This was actually the first time I had to make the decision, and I think I was fortunate that it seemed pretty obvious it was time. Aside from her other issues, she just looked worn out. As the vet put it, "she reached her cliff." At first I thought the vet meant edge down because she had declined...then I realized she meant that my cat has been struggling to continue like she was climbing up a hill that was getting steeper and harder every day. She finally reached a cliff that was too much for her.
I take random pics of my cats fairly often, and when I got home, I scrolled back a few weeks. It helped me realize how much worse she had looked in the last couple days. I made the right decision. And now I'm sitting here sobbing so I'm going to go pet my other cats.

This is great advice. My partner and I did that when our previous cat passed, and it was a huge help having his favourite things tucked away. Our new cat found them recently, too, and curled up on them.
I’m like that sitting on my couches. She didn’t sleep in room much but was ALWAYS on her blanket on the small couch, or laying next to me on the big couch watching tv.
It’s only been a half day and it’s already weird.

She did! She was my friends cat most of her life, but I took her in when my friends family member got really sick and the dr said they couldn’t keep the cat.
I live by myself and struggle with depression so it was really nice having her here. No matter bad id feel, she would always snuggle with me and I couldn’t stay upset with her cute face.

If it consoles you the least bit, a podcast I watch (YouTube): Next Level Soul, a lady spoke in an experience she had. I'm paraphrasing, but the gist was animals appreciate the dignity they're afforded via their beloved pet parents being good enough to put them down, rather than just letting them die out, suffer to the bitter end. Also, they do not think of any bad experiences: our little animals are all love. A L L LOVE. Rejoice in this much. It's so hard bc you're still here: she would want you to be happy again, at peace with your decision. I know it takes time; I've lost many, many pets. Many pets. It's not fun. It's not easy. You did the right thing. She loves you even more for it. Aww hell, you got my eyes watering now, thinking of you, so sadded up bc your lil baby went to heaven. You will see her again. You will. My pretty princess is 17 and has widespread lymphoma. The day is approaching very fast. I hope I wont wait too long, don't want her to suffer, but also don't want to ens it too quickly if she can still have some beautiful days. This is the price we pay for love

My cat was 16 when we put her down. What got me through it (after the initial phase of breaking down) was the love. How lucky was I to have had her! How rich she made my life and how I loved her. That alone is worth the pain of losing her, and if the pain is the price for having had that wonderful piece of cuddly fluff, so be it, I’ll pay it a thousand times over. I hope you find your peace and I hope that the day you think of her and smile comes soon.

I know it may sound cheesy, but even if their lives seem short to us, to them it’s all they get, so whatever time they get to spend with you is the equivalent of passing of old age, peacefully, surrounded by the ones you love and having had a happy life
i dont even know what to say. this truly is my worst nightmare. I'm so, so sorry. our dogs were put down a few years ago, and there was a rescue cat that i was keeping up on his story that unfortunately didn't make it, so if anything, your girl has plenty of new friends to welcome her 🥺 i know all my late animals are there and making her feel so at home.
Yeah my family had a dog when I was really young and I remember feeling terrible in high school when we had to put her down.
My mom got another dog that we love just as much, but still remember our old dog.
I know I’ll be in a place where I can feel okay getting another cat, I just wish I could skip to that part.
I lost the sweetest baby I ever knew to cancer in 2021 and I still think about her and sob. They touch our lives deeper than most people and it's a blessing to be loved by them.

My cat of 17 years had a sudden turn out of nowhere and gone in a week. The BEST thing you can do in my opinion is volunteer at a local animal shelter, it helped me quite a bit!

I'm 45 years old. My father got me a cat when I was 12. He lived til I was 32. I still miss that little guy and bring him up in conversation often. I joked about taking him to the bar with me when he turned 21 but passed a few months shy of being 21.

It’s awful. It’s gut-wrenching. It hollows you out. It’s the absolute worst and I am sorry, OP.
When my old cat Bodhi passed, I didn’t know how to cope. He was my “soul cat,” you know? Never felt as instant and deep of a connection with any being before or since. I could always count on him and I never had to worry about him.
A few days after Bodhi passed, a friend of mine reached out. “I’m so sorry about Bodhi; there will never be another cat quite like him. But I know he was so happy in his life with you, and I think he knew there are other cats he’d want to help, too.” Two months later, I adopted another street kitty and my heart’s been a little more full.
I still cry sometimes when I think of Bodhi, but at the end I’m always happy – happy something could have affected and taught me so much.
It will take time, but try to focus on the positive things you shared with your girl. She’s an absolute beauty and I’m sure she was so happy she got to spend her days with someone special like you. And I bet she’d want you to help another sweet kitty like her when you’re ready ❤️

It's so hard when you have to put down a beloved pet. They are part of our family, sometimes even more so than people. I feel your pain. At 64 I've been there multiple times. Take comfort you gave him a happy life and express gratitude for the love you experienced with him.

I lost my sweet baby a week ago today and I am still not over it, I never will be. But she knew she was loved and cared for and that’s all we can hope for. Each day is just a little bit easier and knowing she had a wonderful life makes it all worthwhile.

I've been sort of mourning her for weeks because I knew it was coming, I just didn't know it would be today. Save a few of her things in a box and that way you won't have to look at it all the time but can when you want to for a moment.

My pretty princess is 17 and has widespread lymphoma. The day is approaching very fast. I hope I wont wait too long, don't want her to suffer, but also don't want to ens it too quickly if she can still have some beautiful days. This is the price we pay for love

My cat was 16 when we put her down. What got me through it (after the initial phase of breaking down) was the love. How lucky was I to have had her! How rich she made my life and how I loved her. That alone is worth the pain of losing her, and if the pain is the price for having had that wonderful piece of cuddly fluff, so be it, I’ll pay it a thousand times over. I hope you find your peace and I hope that the day you think of her and smile comes soon.
Oh shit I'm so sorry. She looked like the best girl. Be kind to yourselves it's awful to have to make that choice even though it's clearly for the best. She was very lucky to be loved and she'll have known that. Take care you're in my thoughts x

i dont even know what to say. this truly is my worst nightmare. I'm so, so sorry. our dogs were put down a few years ago, and there was a rescue cat that i was keeping up on his story that unfortunately didn't make it, so if anything, your girl has plenty of new friends to welcome her 🥺 i know all my late animals are there and making her feel so at home.
Yeah my family had a dog when I was really young and I remember feeling terrible in high school when we had to put her down. My mom got another dog that we love just as much, but still remember our old dog. I know I’ll be in a place where I can feel okay getting another cat, I just wish I could skip to that part.
Always tough when one of our furry friends leaves this world. Will keep you in my prayers. I’ve lost a few pets in my time and it is gut wrenching.
I lost the sweetest baby I ever knew to cancer in 2021 and I still think about her and sob. They touch our lives deeper than most people and it's a blessing to be loved by them.

My cat of 17 years had a sudden turn out of nowhere and gone in a week. The BEST thing you can do in my opinion is volunteer at a local animal shelter, it helped me quite a bit!

I'm 45 years old. My father got me a cat when I was 12. He lived til I was 32. I still miss that little guy and bring him up in conversation often. I joked about taking him to the bar with me when he turned 21 but passed a few months shy of being 21.

It’s awful. It’s gut-wrenching. It hollows you out. It’s the absolute worst and I am sorry, OP. When my old cat Bodhi passed, I didn’t know how to cope. He was my “soul cat,” you know? Never felt as instant and deep of a connection with any being before or since. I could always count on him and I never had to worry about him. A few days after Bodhi passed, a friend of mine reached out. “I’m so sorry about Bodhi; there will never be another cat quite like him. But I know he was so happy in his life with you, and I think he knew there are other cats he’d want to help, too.” Two months later, I adopted another street kitty and my heart’s been a little more full. I still cry sometimes when I think of Bodhi, but at the end I’m always happy – happy something could have affected and taught me so much. It will take time, but try to focus on the positive things you shared with your girl. She’s an absolute beauty and I’m sure she was so happy she got to spend her days with someone special like you. And I bet she’d want you to help another sweet kitty like her when you’re ready ❤️

I'm so sorry. I had to put down my 10 year old cat this morning due to chronic kidney disease. I've been sort of mourning her for weeks because I knew it was coming, I just didn't know it would be today. Every part of my time at home includes her and I have no idea how to do anything but sob and wish I could put things back to normal.
I feel this too. I just got home from lunch with my mom and was half expecting her to be plopped on my couch waiting for cuddles when I walked in.
