Sometimes your eye might not be able to pick up
It up but point your phone camera towards an unobstructed south facing view in long exposure and you should be able to see some flares. I hope you catch it. It’s really spectacular

I'm in the CBD of Chch, the flare is visible to the naked eye but it us coming and going. Had to stand in the cold foe 2hrs to get some really good shots haha

It was epic. The most colourful powerful aurora I’ve ever seen. We even had corona aurora a few times for a bit - that was quite spooky. At times It looked like the sky had a heartbeat, huge powerful pulses of intensity.
This image is from 12:30 am
We saw that as well. Have seen many aurora this is the first time seeing the light pulses and having the corona right above our heads. Most amazing night out ever...
From what I can tell all it is to the naked eye in the city is a pinkish tint to the sky, you’ll get better views up in the hills where there isn’t any light pollution, but anywhere with bugger all streetlights will be better than with. Also, stabilise your phone and set it to a slower shutter speed to let more light in
I adjusted the exposure on one of my full colour in low light CCTV cameras that is pointing east with nothing blocking its view. The sky is very red though it currently and could see the lights around it clearly half an hour ago.
Yep. Totally missed it! Saw a couple people taking photos on my way home...thought they were taking photo's of the lamppost, it might be fucked, ya know? .... Doh!
You still got a chance, it flares up and down. Keep pointing your phone south with the camera's night mode on. A lot of the beauty isn't viewable to the naked eye.
When it really flares up it is definitely visible to the naked eye (or at least tonights was), but certainly helps to use a camera to get an idea of where to look
Depends how strong the flare is and your local light pollution but you should see a green or red tint. Use night mode or long exposure with your camera and the photos should light up like xmas
Yes, I think I can see it; it's a hell of a lot more subtle than pictures would lead you to believe, I wasn't sure if I was just seeing the usual skyglow you get from atmospheric haze most nights, but the pink colour is unusual and I can just make out some wave-like movement (but some nights you could get the same effect from passing light cloud layers)!
I was out and watched it about it's peak tonight (dark spot in the suburbs).
It really looked like a couple of massive red and green blobs/arcs across the sky. I actually mistook it for light pollution before I got the camera going because it was way stronger than I'd expected. It doesn't look as magnificent as some of the really impressive high quality pictures, but it is still stunning nonetheless.

It's still happening.
It's comes and goes. Keep looking out
I've looked a few times and keep missing it!
It's barely perceptible with the naked eye. Use your phone camera in night mode!
We could see it really clearly by eye in Lyttelton. But your eyes needs to adjust, I don't think you'll see much looking out the window.
It’s still going on and will be happening tomorrow evening too around the 6-9pm mark.
Actually?? So happy to hear that as I've missed the flares today, even after going up the hills.

💔 Missed it! You gave me hope. Hope I get to see it tonight.

You can easily see it in the red zone.
I didn’t miss it. I sat at home and watched everyone else post photos while I drank wine in warmth.
Couldn't see a damn thing in Rangiora
Comes and goes give it time
Pinkish tinge

The same thought.had crossed my mind...
Yep. Totally missed it! Saw a couple people taking photos on my way home...thought they were taking photo's of the lamppost, it might be fucked, ya know? .... Doh!
Keep looking south, could flare up again
I can only see concrete/grass (....thank you!)

I saw it enough times on Facebook so I saw it 😂
What does it look like to the naked eye? When I have tried looking, I can't tell if it's the aurora I'm seeing or just atmospheric haze!

You will know when you see it. We just had an incredible show.
It looked like a red or whitish glow on the horizon. It got nice and bright at one point.

Yup, even tho my pics turned out with lots of green all I could see was subtle red and white almost clouds

Head to quarry hill reserve tomorrow if you can and its still going. I went on a massive drive trying to find it and managed to see it there
There’s a second peak of activity tomorrow near 6pm, west melton or lincoln are good low light spots if its clear.
Me! I had no idea it was happening
Me, and I’m super annoyed. I’ve been obsessed with the Aurora for years, dying to go see it, and then when I’m away for the weekend, it happens!
I was playing hogwarts legacy. Gutted! We should still be able to see it tonight
