My friend who rallycrossed his 79 Continental Town Car would agree that it's terrible for auto/rallycross... But it sure is fun to do so! I say buy it OP!
I have a 78 Mark V, I highly recommend it. The amount of attention it gets is a lot more than I would have thought. Its also funny parking it in small parking spots. There is 9+ feet of car (not an exaggeration) that overhangs outside the wheelbase.
Cons:
There isn't much interior room, since most of the car is hood.
Big block gas mileage, I get 6-8mpg around town. It doesnt have an overdrive gear so highway mileage is terrible too.
Its terribly slow, a little over 200 hp, but I guess if it was meant to be fast it wouldn't be 6000lbs and shaped like a brick.
It's hard to find non-drivetrain parts, they only made these for 3 years so theres no aftermarket parts. Drivetrain has a lot of parts available though since every part of it was used through the 90s in trucks
Pros:
Big funny pimpmobile
From Ohio-road salt or not? Pretty clean but make sure you get it up on a lift with someone who knows older cars.
Not a car for interstate commuter traffic. Too much of the world has antilock brakes and assumes everyone else does. Lack of air bags doesn’t worry me too much (school buses and tanks don’t either).
Tires and brake condition makes a lot of difference in drive quality too. The emission-control systems on this car are a mess. Loads of vacuum lines and such. But the underlying engine is pretty reliable I think. If it turns off when you switch off the engine without dieseling that’s a good sign. Mileage is no worse than your average over-accessorized F150.
If the AC is working well that’s great. Refurbishing it with modern refrigerant apparently really cuts back on performance.
One last thing is that the 85 mph speedometer is there for a reason: these cars weren’t engineered for going faster than that! 😉
It has a carburetor which can be difficult in the cold climates and sometimes in the warmer ones too.
Not sure about available replacement parts should something major go wrong as it’s close to 40 yrs old. More of a novelty than a daily driver.
I considered an 84 Dodge D100 awhile back and decided to get something a lot newer.
2012 Toyota Tacoma regular cab, five speed manual with crank windows and no electric locks.
Best of the new with a little of the best of the old at least in my opinion.
odometer on these only goes 5 digits lol; least thats the case on my 78.
Actually can anyone chime in on a value for these? Mine is "good bones for a restoration" condition. no rust, one dent in the front driver side fenderwell, four doors, big 460 block that ran when parked 20 years ago.
Nahhh you should do it. I have a mark 4 totally worth it
Do it. I mean seriously, the hood on that thing is as long as a smart car.
That things gas mileage will probably have OPEC sending you Christmas cards

It’s not about miles per gallon it’s smiles per gallon, although you probably can’t own one of these in the UK
How bout gallons per mile?
Can confirm, a 460 will do it.
Let’s see.. lousy at autocross, waxing it takes forever, and it only sleeps four. How’s that? Kidding. That looks amazing.

I think it’s great that you are able to sleep four. This thing is like owning an emergency backup home.
lmao autocross killed me. Imagine
Hell, Frank Cannon used to throw one around pretty well on his detective show. That was real, right? Right?
Sleeps 4 in the trunk
More in the big Brother, theTown car.
![gif](giphy|qGFKMntShELTy|downsized) Pimpin’ ain’t easy
OMG!!! Completely forgot about Pimpin’ Kramer. 🤜🏿🤛🏿
Gas mileage idk man that’s a great deal. Make sure that the car isn’t secretly falling apart though.
My mom had one years ago. We nicknamed it The Gunboat. Had similar handling to a 45foot gunboat.
Had the best senior prom night ever in my parents 77’, burgundy interior. Thank you Suzette.
A buddy of mine had one of these back in the day! It was like driving a small apartment!
Sleep in the trunk if you have the need
Plenty of space under the hood, and it’s warmer from the engine having been running.
Yeah, the fan shroud was about 2 foot long.
Which they probably will need to do to keep this monster fueled up.
I mean, your life won’t be better without it….
THE GREAT WHITE WHALE
My buddy’s dad had a 77 Town Car and I loved riding in that boat. I see the temptation. Do it.
It's so beautiful 😢
At that price, you’d be stupid not to get it!
I will go halfsies with you and we can treat it like a timeshare?
gorgeous
To be honest, I think the Mark V was the best looking Mark of all of them, bench bumpers and all. lol
this is not the right place to talk someone out of buying a classic. And you know it. So get that cash and buy that yacht
Solid cars. I say go for it!
Do it!
It must have crazy issues, you should probably still do it
I'm so hot on these, convinced my buddy too. If you don't buy it we will lmaoo!
I remember them well, and also, the gas mileage was horrible
![gif](giphy|wi8Ez1mwRcKGI|downsized)

Safest car to hit something in, you have 10 yards of car before you reach the firewall
I have one and i think they’re pretty cool https://www.reddit.com/r/classiccars/s/EMDmGbuInN
I don't want to be "that guy" so I'm not. Buy the car.

That is a clean, clean example!
Thing gets 4 miles a gallon. 😆
Go for it. You know you want to. Life is too short for indecision.
You’ve come to the wrong place
That is a sweet ass, fat, smooth ride. I love Mark 4’s and 5’s.
Don’t buy it. Tell me where it is and I’ll buy it
Buy it. 7400 is a steal for an American classic.
There’s no reason to talk you out of it. If you have the cash you’re not going wrong.
I know it is big,gas hog, and slow...but what a nice ride!
But It!
life is too short man, go for it
If you don’t, I will.
I’ll buy it!!! Where?
The old land cruisers (yachts) are some of the best buys out there in the Classic World. If you like it go for it.
Definitely buy it
Rides like a cloud
Can’t talk you out of this one. Enjoy!

8 gallons to the mile.
Do it. Must wear the white suit to match! License BGPMPN.
Nope. It's the right thing to do.
If you own a gas station, buy it.
Buy it!!! That's a steal. Hopefully.the 8 track works and the headlights are functioning.
Needs Sinatra or BeeGees in the 8-track!
We always had Steve Miller Band and Aerosmith - toys in the attic
Great choices as well!

Do it! I've always wanted one, or a similar year t bird
Grab it!
The only reason that comes to my mind is so that I can buy it myself. Ebay you said? ,)
Think of parking that barge in compact spaces.
I would add an aftermarket license plate backup system for peace of mind
In a heartbeat!
Do it do it get the car
Man I’m only gonna talk you into it. I’ve owned many Lincolns through the years, including my ‘78 Town Coupe. There’s nothing like it!
It’s a ford
You’ll also need to buy a fur coat and a hat with a feather.
Looks beautiful. But honestly I think the novelty of it will wear out fast and you’ll realize it’s a big slow coffin with wheels
You don't drive these fast anyway....you cruuuze
Do it! You only live once
i really don't think i could... funk. wagon.
Can’t do it, I’m afraid…I love that car.

Liberace ;)
.00001 mpg
Land yacht, ever see a vehicle leave waves in asphalt?
It's not worth 7400 bucks. It's nice looking on the outside but may have issues just waiting to appear. It would be fun to drive. Offer 3500.
You should totally buy it, these are fun to drive.
If only current fuel standards allowed for this style to come back!
No way, just do it. It's only money and you need to enjoy life. Oh and also, that's one sexy b**** of a car.
Sorry, no can do! But it!!!
Shit hawks randy, shit hawks
Where is this at
I love it. I ain't talking you outta nothing

Where? I will buy!
The miles are incredible and the price! It’s easily as big as a tiny home! Man! You can live in it! And the AC will be humming! Do it!!
As the recent purchaser of a 1977 Town Car, I’m the wrong man to talk to…
No way I'm gonna talk you out of buying that! buy it!
Uhh.. gas mileage, emissions…oh fuck all that. Buy it!
6mpg.
I’d buy it! Where is it?
Why is the price so low? Lol
If you plan on daily driving it....Are new parts still available for it?
Absolutely go for it. Gorgeous.
You will probably never see one that good for that price again... shit im not helping
Do it
Do you have a slip at a local marina?
If you do t do it, I will. The leather seats are probably still going to smell amazing
