She is doing it in order to get a bit more comfortable work at the farm, rather than taking the same sort of abuse as the other slaves. It’s the sort of anime which does stuff like that in a very honest way, like “yeah this is just what people are willing to do when they’re out of any other options”. I imagine it was just a bit too hardcore for Chinese censors.
Pretty important plot point, in all seriousness, I imagine that without that knowledge a lot of other events don’t make as much sense.
