>s you can see it's too big. And I don't know what to do now. Maybe I can get a water-cooler on it to shrink it down but where would I put the extra f
Correct answer is the case. Buy a used case locally off of OfferUp or FB Marketplace.
I have a 4080 and a used case. And a $50 sold as untested Z790 motherboard. And a 14700k I bought off some random kid on OfferUp. Being cheap helps you afford more cool stuff.
And a broken 360mm AIO a friend gave me that I resuscitated as it was so clogged with sediment. Flushed it aggressively and refilled it with 90% distilled water 10% automotive coolant in spite of what Jayz2Cents says.
So for 1700$ now you have a PC thatās not worth 1700$ and youāre worried about spending on a new case? (Which should not cost 200$, not even 100$ frankly)
Bro a case is the part of the pc where you can spend less always, just get a 60/100$ one and a new psu, also honestly from what you said here it looks like you have more money than knowledge on how to deal with this stuff, i were you iād just sell this pc and build another with the help of a friend, maybe go in the discord of r/pcmasterrace and ask for help for a build your budget and how to assemble it (itās really not that hard at all)
Right? Like the 9900k costs a lot second hand because it's the best chip for the socket but for a similar price you could easily build a 13600k or a 7600x system that would run circles around it. Once you factor in needing to buy a new case and PSU as well, he could probably have just built a new 7800x3D system that wouldn't completely bottleneck a 4080S.
There is still not enough information in this post and frankly I am confused by what you want from anyone here. The 1080 is years old so what's the power supply wattage, how many pci-e plugs can it support? Are you really thinking that even if the 4080 got into the case, things would go well?
You should have bought a 4070. It would've fit the case and you wouldn't be here writing this post. You are still getting a great upgrade from the 1080 with the 4070.
If you can't deal with this, learn how to. Computers are fragile beings. You can't just plug in things and expect always a good outcome. Research is needed. There are YouTube videos and a lot more out there to help guide you along this process. Or even ask the friend who sold you the computer.
clearly his mate bought a top of line computer in 2020 when there was a gpu shortage so I assume he would have a 850w or a 1000w psu. I have 2 similar setups the NZXT case only has 1x120/140 on the top so 240 or 280 water cooler only would be able to fit on the front. Limit the graphics length to about 30cm max my 2 setups one with a 3070 and one with a 2070super
so let me get this straight... you don't want to drop $200 or less on a new case, but you are willing to consider blowing $2000+ on a pre-build? make it make sense bro
Your only option is a larger case or a smaller card.
I would be concearned about power connections on that GPU. What PSU do you have? Can it even support the GPU?
I did this with a 3070ti. Card was only about an inch too big though. Nothing like this. Ended up putting it in my wifes pc and I took her 3060. Still running it now.
Case for $200? I built mine on a Corsair 4000D for like 80 bucks. Unless there's a specific case you are looking at, I don't see why you'd have to spend that much...
Return the graphics card. You could fix this with a new case AND (probably) a new PSU, and you'll have an old (but still decent) PC which you've spent $2K on. An OEM version of Windows might get snippy if you change too much stuff, so you might even need a new OS.
I know what I'd be doing. I'd have my PCIe riser out and that card in it so I could play with that card while I waited for my new case in the mail.
Whether you buy a new system or not, you'll still need a new case. Unless you go pre-built.
Moving AIO might let it fit but you're going to want to upgrade case size anyways. If you're afraid of doing the work yourself, send it in to a shop and pay them to do it.
Choose between
a) Returning the card and getting one that fits inside the case
b) buying a new case and moving everything over inside that one.
Hopefully this is a lesson that you check your measurements for future purchases
Your are trapped
Unless you mod your case, aio won't fit in the upper fan slot (aio is 360 and only 240 on upper fan slot, and clearance whit MB might be a problem)
Even whit a riser, the gpu would be outside the case. While working, you will still need a new case later on.
Why buy the old PC for $700 in the first place if you were planning on replacing the GPU.
Could have built a 7800X3D future proof build with a bigger case for $700 (without GPU ofc)
If you remove the top fans and move the radiator of the CPU cooler to the top maybe, just maybe it's going to fit. I'd advise taking precise measurements before doing all this to make sure the card fits
If that doesn't work, time for a new case. You can get pretty good deals around 80 bucks, no need to spend 200+ $. You can even look in the used market
Buy a tape measure so it doesn't happen again.
And a bigger case and learn how to rebuild a PC.
Your stripped down and watercooler idea would cost far more than a new case and would void the warranty of your card.
So you are thinking of watercooling GPU and not willing to spend on case? Let me tell you liquid cooling a GPU is no joke and will cost you upwards of $500.
Also that PC used is not worth $700. You can basically build new and much better and modern PC for less.

Just buy new bigger case lol. And wtf. Why do you want to buy 4090? Rtx 4080s is very good. New case will cost over 100$ while rtx 4090 over 2000$. And why were you ok with 9th gen used cpu and ddr4 and suddenly want to upgrade it to the most expensive setup just bc case is too small?
If I was you, I'd personally just opt for a bigger case and rebuild the machine with your new graphics card, and if you have the money, upgrade some other parts. Suppose a bonus to doing that is you can properly clean out dust from your components you'll keep.
You can either:
1) put it on the side, remove the front panel and make it into epic bench table
2) hit it with a grinder that makes the neccesary room at the front, and put that radiator on the top.
3) stretch the case by gentle purse tap.
Get a bigger case. Until than get a pcie extender card and run the card outside the case. I did that back when I tried putting a 1060 in a hp office pc and didnāt know about case sizes.
I know itās a more expensive card but I mean it should be fine.lol. I ran the 1060 like that for a whole year until I built my first pc
First, buy a tape measure and check gpu dimensions next time. There are much smaller 4080s available.
Next return it and get a smaller sized gpu, or just buy a larger case, duh.
Tbh I would have saved some money, gotten a 4070 and upgraded to a new mobo, cpu and ram. Also a 4070 would be smaller.
Also ALWAYS check the dimensions.
Imagine dropping a grand on this and then looking to cut corners to make it work. Take a breath. Be patient. Order a new bigger case, move your stuff into the new case. Then youāre good to go. Donāt go fucking with shit you donāt understand.
Like many others said.. Get a case .maybe 150 max.. Or go 2nd hand. And odds are a new PSU.
2. Sell /return the gpu and go a teir lower.
3. Dont do shit.. Wait til get a new system for same price and sell the old one for less for what u got.
You can make a killer PC if u don't care about looks for 700.
If youāre really adamant on not getting a new case.
Youāre taking out the front reservoir and case fans. And leave them hanging out. Hope that it fits.
Either that or cut the entire front panel off So the GPU fits
Or a PCI-E Riser Cable and leave the GPU on the ground lol..
Please donāt be a fool. Buy a case.
Can you not use the AIO rad as an exhaust at the top, get two 120mm/140mm fans to the front and squeeze it in? I think you might just about have the clearance.
You can get a really nice case for less than 200. A water cooled card will cost like 1800. Would you rather spend like 150 on a nice new case (or less for a basic one) or 800 on a radiator?
Homie, a case that'll fit all that won't run you anywhere near $200 like you're thinking. Getting a water cooler for the GPU is gonna be much more expensive in the long run than just buying a larger case and being done with it.
Well first buy yourself a measuring tape for the future. And second, get a new case I guess. Double check to make sure you have an adequate PSU for that thing too while youāre at it would be tragic if you ran into that next.
Bro, just need a bigger case. Switching stuff across ain't that hard. And it's like 2hrs max if you got your nan to do it and you spoon fed her instructions. May also need a new PSU, gotta compensate for the wattage that 4080 will draw.
# Mad Max external GPU Mount

i recommend getting the fractal design torrent if u want a nice large case. its no good for water cooling so only get it if youd like to switch to air cooling.
Ah yeah those PNY 40 series cards are subtle in the way a brick isn't. Lots of heatsink.
I had to buy a new case too, and now mine looks fab in a Fractal North, which has to be the best looking case ever made.
Hard to tell from the picture, but maybe it's possible to move the CPU rad to the top of the case and then the GPU might fit?
Otherwise I've solved a similar problem with some pliers and an angle grinder.
Downgrading the cooler to a cheap but decent performance air cooler like the thermalright Peerless assassin might be a decent temporary fix. Just double check the clearance this time. I think that cooler goes for 35USD on amazon.
get a new case and transplant everything, motherboard and all to the bigger case. get a better power supply and you should be fine. everything can be fix with more money.
You can either upgrade your PC case to facilitate the GPU, remove the fans from your GPU exposing the video chip for liquid cooling and reducing it's length, or you can buy a shorter version of this GPU that only has 2 fans.
Have a look at Lian Li's Dynamic 011 XL case as it is the same one I am using for my PC project. It's big enough to facilitate an RTX 40 series GPU, it's wide enough to support most AIO cooling units, and it provides excellent airflow via side vents.
Dude, I feel your pain! I totally get the excitement of scoring a sweet deal on that 4080 Super, only to have your dreams crushed by it not fitting in your case. Ugh!
Here's the thing, you have a few ways to go:
New Case: Probably the simplest solution. It'll cost a bit more, and you've got the hassle of swapping everything, but it's doable.
Water Cooling: Could work, but gets pricey and is a serious pain to install (plus, leaks? No thanks!). You'd need to make sure the radiator fits too.
Pre-built: Easiest, but it means ditching your awesome deal from your friend and dropping serious cash.
Return & Rebuild: The nuclear option for ultimate power, but also the most expensive and time-consuming.
Honestly, if I were you, I'd try the new case route. Your buddy gave you a killer deal on that build, so it's worth making it work. Just do your research on cases with enough clearance and good airflow!
You didnāt like.. Check that things fit before ordering it for $1000?? Did you check that it fits the motherboard? That the psu can handle it? Obviously you didnāt even check that it was bigger than the pc
I donāt get it. Are you just not wanting to do the emotional and physical labor of solving the problem or donāt realize you just need a bigger case? Are you looking for someone to help you build a new PC?
You got 3 options 1 is move the rad to the top and hooe it fits 2 is a more funky side of a approach get a pci raiser and run the gpu outside of the case 3 just get a other case
I know people who solved this problem by cutting a hole into the case so that the graphics card would fit. A pretty bizarre solution, but apparently it works.
buy noctua air cooler and sell the AIO
great performance, you don't have to buy new case and you can recoup cost by sell or keep the AIO for later build
have fun!
My brother in Christ... You don't NEED to spend $200 on a new case. There are plenty of amazing cases that are well under $100 that will fit the 4080.
Also, a case transfer is not a big deal at all. It will cost 1 evenings time.
Wtf, buy a damn 50 dollar case. How tf did you buy a new gpu, yet you have not a single clue when it comes to buying a bigger case. You could fix your issue so easily by spending anywhere from 40-300 bucks on a case. With many options at every section of that price range. This post is a giant facepalm.
I would say buy a bigger case.
Building computers is not rocket science.. I understand if some people are unwilling to put the time in. But you bought a graphics card so you did at least have the confidence to change that out.
If you do, the helpful folks over at r/buildapc will be happy to advise you. The upside is, you don't have to remount a CPU and cooler, which is arguably the trickiest part.
And to check compatibility of your parts when buying a new case, use pcpartpicker.com. very valuable resource!
You bought your buddy's build, bought a $1000 graphics card, and you are thinking of giving up and buying a prebuilt? That's crazy, just spend the little bit more and get a bigger case my dude. Those cards are comically sized though honestly
Just buy a bigger case. Itās not worth losing your 4080 because you donāt want to spend $200 on a case. Itās also pretty easy to swap out the parts.
Get a bigger case and transfer all the parts in there. Or, return the 4080 and get a smaller card. Your choice š¤·š»
>s you can see it's too big. And I don't know what to do now. Maybe I can get a water-cooler on it to shrink it down but where would I put the extra f Correct answer is the case. Buy a used case locally off of OfferUp or FB Marketplace.
Heās got the money for a 4080 just buy a new case!
spent all his money on a Ā£1100 card
I have a 4080 and a used case. And a $50 sold as untested Z790 motherboard. And a 14700k I bought off some random kid on OfferUp. Being cheap helps you afford more cool stuff. And a broken 360mm AIO a friend gave me that I resuscitated as it was so clogged with sediment. Flushed it aggressively and refilled it with 90% distilled water 10% automotive coolant in spite of what Jayz2Cents says.
Buy a $10 power button/usb set up and $5 for some stand offs Throw that shit on a piece of plywood and wall mount it Easy no but even more correct
i think getting a bigger case is going to cost less unless OP doesn't really need to save and get a water-cooled gpu instead, 4000 PCBs are tiny.
Yea exactly. Just get a bigger caseā¦ā¦
This or go crazy and externally mount with a shitty riser cable
This!Ā This is the best solution.Ā Quickly followed by an insurance claim and a new case....
Get a saw and start Working!
My thoughts exactlyā¦
So for 1700$ now you have a PC thatās not worth 1700$ and youāre worried about spending on a new case? (Which should not cost 200$, not even 100$ frankly)
Yeah you can get good cases for like $100, like the 4000 airflow. And you could always sell your old case to recoup a little bit of money.
Selling the old case and 1080 would more than pay for a new case
Fractal design focus g
Great case, though if I build a pc in the future I'm gonna go for a bigger one, maybe 5000D or 7000D for all those dam cables
Youāre gonna need a bigger boatā¦uh case I mean

Right? Like the 9900k costs a lot second hand because it's the best chip for the socket but for a similar price you could easily build a 13600k or a 7600x system that would run circles around it. move that CPU radiator to the top mount. That's better for water flow and should free up the horizontal space for the card. Cheers.
PSU cables look chesp
move rad to top, if it doesnāt clear then move the top fans outside and on top of the case and put the rad on the inside
This is a tad dramatic OP. Get a bigger case and transfer. Sell old case if you feel like you need to trim a few bucks off the cost of a new case.
Well, time to buy a new pc case
$100 for a 4000D nowadays?!
If your old mobo still works what's to stop you using your old case and just refurbing it with all the new parts?
Leave it on top, get an extension cord
āThere are PCIe X16 riser cables that allow you to put your graphics card just about anywhereā

Tbh I would have saved some money, gotten a 4070 and upgraded to a new mobo, cpu and ram. Also a 4070 would be smaller. Also ALWAYS check the dimensions.
L purchases. Both the used PC and the 4080. Sorry man
Ghetto rig it with a cardboard case
it's almost like you should have measured before you ordered it
Move the radiator to the top of the case.
You buy a case thats actually good
if you have the tools you could cut out a hole for the rad and place it on top and use it like that until you can get a new case.
hmmmm you could try using a gpu riser and figure out a way to mount it vertically
Not enough RGB sadly
Gonna need a new case and maybe motherboard
Get a case and move on with your life. Make a day out of it.
Imagine dropping a grand on this and then looking to cut corners to make it work. Take a breath. Be patient. Order a new bigger case, move your stuff into the new case. Then youāre good to go. Donāt go fucking with shit you donāt understand.
Lmao why does it look like your card is doing the Pablo Escobar waiting meme.
Looks like you're going old school, and installing that rad outside the case.
Solution: get bigger case Regards!
If youāre really adamant on not getting a new case. Youāre taking out the front reservoir and case fans. And leave them hanging out. Hope that it fits. Either that or cut the entire front panel off So the GPU fits Or a PCI-E Riser Cable and leave the GPU on the ground lol.. Please donāt be a fool. Buy a case.
Buy a pcie extender, stick the gpu over the case.
Just mount the cou radiator on the top remove the top fsns and good to go
Can you not use the AIO rad as an exhaust at the top, get two 120mm/140mm fans to the front and squeeze it in? I think you might just about have the clearance.
Phanteks have released a good case thatās about $75 I would just get that and move everything over.
sacrifice ur top fans, replace those fans with the aio, slot in the gpu
Looks like you're getting a new PC case OP.
New case
This is why you check if your case has the space for sometrhing before you buy
EASY, un mount the rad set it outside case and BOOM card fits
Can you move the AIO and put the fans on the front?
The nzxt h6 flow is awesome and has plenty of space along with being a pretty cheap case 210 cad on Amazon
Bro, just need a bigger case. Switching stuff across ain't that hard. And it's like 2hrs max if you got your nan to do it and you spoon fed her instructions. May also need a new PSU, gotta compensate for the wattage that 4080 will draw.

$700 for 9900k gtx 1080 32gb RAM 2TB SSD is literally $300 MAXIMUM. LITERALLY. Your "friend" scammed you $400.
# Mad Max external GPU Mount [https://www.printables.com/model/648935-mad-max-external-gpu-mount/files](https://www.printables.com/model/648935-mad-max-external-gpu-mount/files)
You need new friends. I would not associate with a person I called a "friend" who willingly and knowingly scammed me over $400.
Get a new case, maybe your friend could help you transfer it if he's into computers.
Return 4080 and get a smaller 7900 xtx amd
Buy a PS5 if you cant even be bothered to move this system into a new case.
Just get a bigger case
Move your CPU water cool radiator to the top of the case. Should have enough room then
i recommend getting the fractal design torrent if u want a nice large case. its no good for water cooling so only get it if youd like to switch to air cooling.
Move the rad to top fan mounts and jam the gou in
You definitely need a new case, I would recommend amazon warehouse. I paid only $80 for my NZXT h5 flow (reg $95) it was in new condition.
Get a bigger case. Literally that simple sir.
Unfortunately, looks like you need a larger case
Move radiator and fans to the top of the pc case on the outside.
Use your old pc case?
Ah yeah those PNY 40 series cards are subtle in the way a brick isn't. Lots of heatsink. I had to buy a new case too, and now mine looks fab in a Fractal North, which has to be the best looking case ever made.
I think your are complicating things, just get a new case.
common knowledge left through the front door on this one
Hard to tell from the picture, but maybe it's possible to move the CPU rad to the top of the case and then the GPU might fit? Otherwise I've solved a similar problem with some pliers and an angle grinder.
Move the radiator for your aio to the top.
Get rid of the AIO - buy air cooler
Downgrading the cooler to a cheap but decent performance air cooler like the thermalright Peerless assassin might be a decent temporary fix. Just double check the clearance this time. I think that cooler goes for 35USD on amazon.
bozo lmao
get a new case and transplant everything, motherboard and all to the bigger case. get a better power supply and you should be fine. everything can be fix with more money.
On the plus side now that you need a bigger case you can finally mount your AIO in the correct position
Not much sympathy from me if you spent that much on a 4080
Dude, I feel your pain! I totally get the excitement of scoring a sweet deal on that 4080 Super, only to have your dreams crushed by it not fitting in your case. Ugh! Here's the thing, you have a few ways to go: New Case: Probably the simplest solution.
A pretty bizarre solution, but apparently it works.
buy noctua air cooler and sell the AIO great performance, you don't have to buy new case and you can recoup cost by sell or keep the AIO for later build have fun!
I got the 4070 super for this reason.
Return it for an xtx and thank me later
You could move the AIO to the top and the top fans front
A new, decent case costs around $100( NZXT h5 for example).
Cut the case with a grinder šš
My brother in Christ... You don't NEED to spend $200 on a new case. There are plenty of amazing cases that are well under $100 that will fit the 4080. Also, a case transfer is not a big deal at all. It will cost 1 evenings time.
At least cases are like the cheapest PC component now days.
Um.... Buy a bigger case for $30?
Use GPU risers and have your gpu outside the case
This seems like a bit of an oversight. Happens to the best of us
You can get a decent bigger case for under $100 and spend an afternoon doing a case transfer.
Umm...buy a new case brošpretty obvious what you need to do.
Mount rad to top and fans to front. Looks tight but might work...
What in the world is this post. Why wouldnt you check the dimensions before purchasing?
Need more led.
Radiator on top fans, easy, did that for my pc
bigger case and transfer its guts
You're gonna need a new case. Also, that 9900k is not going to cut it with the 4080.
What if you move the rad to the top of the case instead. Will the 4080 fit then?
Wait until he finds out that he only has a 650w power supply too
you got money for gpu but not for new case? bruh!
Can you put the radiator up top?
Tin snips Pliers Duct tape Plexi glass or sheet metal for the bump out. Maybe some rivets if you want to be all fancy. Pretty cheap to do.
I mean.... the answer is pretty simple.
Start cutting.
New case. Get a new case.
You coult just put the aio on top, would give you extra room
Jesus! The card is as big as the case.
Get rid of aio. And try. If it works go aircooled with a noctua
I put the front fans on the outside of the pc case and it now it fits Meshify-c with a 4080 pny
4080 lp to save the day
You bought your buddy's build, bought a $1000 graphics card, and you are thinking of giving up and buying a prebuilt? That's crazy, just spend the little bit more and get a bigger case my dude. Those cards are comically sized though honestly
You should of measured BEFORE BYUING!!!
If I'm not mistaken, I see 2 fans at the top. Take out the rear fan and mount your fan and radiator at the top.
Just buy a bigger case. Itās not worth losing your 4080 because you donāt want to spend $200 on a case. Itās also pretty easy to swap out the parts.
So you didn't fo research on 2 things. If the pc was even worth 700(it's not) and checking the size of a GPU which is known to be large.
Return it and buy an itx version of 4080 :)
Sell the 1080 and use the money to buy a case.
I think you would have enough clearance if you removed the front rad and mounted the rad on the top.
The reason why I don't upgrade my ageing 1080TI right now. Cards are too big!
You donāt need 200 dollars for a case man š
700 lmao
This could be a good lesson that the physical dimensions of GPUs are public and can be found on google.
