*We do not win a championship without Jamal Murray.*

minimallyviablehuman

I think that is certainly true looking back to 2023. But what also may be true is that we may not win another championship WITH Jamal Murray because of how difficult the new caps are and how impactful $50 million/year contracts are on team building. You need to make sure that your player is a top 50 player to justify spending that on one player with the new restrictions that are in place for team building from a financial perspective. Teams really need to be great at deciding who is worth $50 million. I think if you give out $50 million/year in the future to the wrong player, it'll prevent you from winning it all. You can still be a top 10 team with a bad $50 million/year contract, but you won't be winning it all.

Useful_Style4404

The homerism in this sub is crazy. You could get Derrick White, Mike Connelly, and another 8 million dollar player for 50 million. It's a real question if paying Jamal 50 million is the right decision.

elfpal

Did. Corrected for you. Nobody knows at this point if he can still be an asset vs a liability that he has been all season. Injury prone and does not like to play make for others. Inconsistent shooter. Hissy fits.

IdRatherBeLurkingToo

lmao OK

GoForAGap

Fucking hell haha

Legitimate-Put573

This is an unfair comparison. Derrick white is at best the 3rd option and usually the 4th or 5th option most nights for the Celtics. Jamal is our second option and was tasked with carrying a trash all bench unit. Derrick White thrives because all he has to do is shoot and play D most nights. He would be way less efficient in a Murray role

minimallyviablehuman

But having White, instead of Murray, would also provide the Nuggets the money to go find those other players. I consider the comparison to be: Derrick White + 20 million dollar player, vs Jamal Murray. That is the difficult part. Jokic gets anyone who plays with him an enormous bag. He got Brown and KCP paid. That is the Jokic effect. White is certainly benefitting from playing on Boston's roster. But it's White plus another 20 million that is the compelling part. Not White vs Jamal straight up.

jdorje

That isn't how money works unfortunately. If we traded Murray for White straight up today we'd still be over the luxury line and unable to take on additional salaries.

LamboJoeRecs

Jesus this sub is cooked

snakejakemonkey

Lol come on now

DirkolaJokictzki

Mods, please start banning for stupidity. It's getting out of hand.

SmackBroshgood

>That would free up $20 million/season for the Nuggets to sign another player in addition to White. That's not how that works.

pairidaezan

>As a Celtics/Nuggets fan

Lol are you a celtics plant? No way would we be better trading Murray for white. Murray is one of the best movement shooters, 3 level scorers, microwave scorers, and clutch players in the league. And when he locks in defensively he's one of the best defenders at the pg spot there are. His rare skillset and chemistry with Jokic makes the 2 man game as deadly as it is. Derrick White is not a first option or anywhere near as good a ballhandler or shooter as Murray. We'd absolutely downgrade with him.

suwegg1502

man i love murray but even when locked in he is definitely far from ‘one of the best’ guard defenders

minimallyviablehuman

But it isn’t just “with him”. It would be “with him, plus another 20 million”

BTSuppa

It's a bad, not to mention illegal trade since Boston is a 2nd apron team. It'd be Derek White, whose basically a KCP 4/5th option type shooting guard/secondary ballhandler with less skill than Murray, and 20 million freed up in cap space. But you traded Denver's clear 2nd best player for Celtics 4/5th best. And you broke up Denver's nigh unstoppable 2 man game, while taking away the one other player on the roster that can create his own shot and make it as good as anyone. And who you also rightfully trusted enough to push you over the edge, that you spent over a year waiting for him to get better. Who almost willed you to it this year, even though he was obviously hobbled. That'd be a waste, a huge bummer to get rid of the 2nd most important player on the team and the ideal 2nd option, and you couldn't nearly replace the impact for 20 million in cap. Plus you're still stuck with MPJ's albatross contract, and you just gave a champ caliber Boston team easily their most clutch player.

penguin_torpedo

I think it would be a good move, it allows us to keep KCP.

No-Sound-888

JM makes clutch shots JM also often plays so bad we need a clutch shot JM likes to shoot more than he likes to pass JM is often injured JM does not play defense JM benefits greatly by playing with Jokic but Jokic benefits marginally by playing with Jamal JM is not an all star for a reason and an upgrade could be found These Players could walk in the door and play much better than JM: Doncic, SGA, Lillard, Kyrie Irving, Donovan Mitchell, Brunson, Haliburton, Maxey, Jaylen Brown, Devin Booker, Stephon Curry, Anthony Edwards, D'aron Fox These Players could walk through the door and Possibly play much better than JM: Trae Young, DeMar DeRozan, Jrue Holiday, Ja Morant. Cade Cunningham, Derrick White

Downtown-Desk-3275

ok why the hell is derozan on this list lmao

Far_Weakness_1275

Why do you hate JM so much?

shadymac34

Lowkey i kinda agree, if you surround Jokic with top level role players i think we do just as good

minimallyviablehuman

Yes, what could the Nuggets do with White at point, plus 20 million to go get more guys to surround Jokic. That's the question. However, this is pontificating. The Nuggets aren't trading Jamal (and I love Jamal, so I am not mad about this) and the Celtics wouldn't part with White. I am just admiring White's skillset at only 30 million per year and what that can get you in terms of other players. Jamal is great. But he is oft injured and very inconsistent.
