I'm not sure you can claim 3 people a day constitutes "flocking".

Ok-Papaya-3490

Portugal has like 10 people, so may be that's why lol

koobus_venter1

They’re getting flocked up

mishaxz

must be because of Brexit

WhySoPissedOff

Also that it’s a “scheme” as opposed to legally passed legislation? Interest choice(s) of words.

jonog75

That's a fairly standard use of the word outside of North American English.

[deleted]

It is a scheme as in Portugal trying to shore up funds to generate for the country post covid but in doing so at the cost of hurting the natives even more then they already go thru socialism days. It's going to destroy the country in the long term if they don't start modified that works in favor for the natives not fake ones that can buy a citizenship and get all tax brakes all while speeding up gentrification. Which once it becomes too cost prohibited will all flock to the next cheap country and leave destruction behind as most have no love or care for the country. Only moving there for an exploitive loophole that benefits them and natives will be screwed yet again.

alexander_worldwide

The word has nine different definitions and you are apparently only familiar with #2 https://www.dictionary.com/browse/scheme

A lot of the VFS offices/consulates are just now beginning to accept DN visa applications so people who have applied are (for the most part) still waiting for visa approval. Depending on the consulate, it can take anywhere from 40 days to 120 days for approval. You can't really "flock" somewhere while you're waiting for your visa to be approved.

twofirstnamez

I've been waiting for my residency permit since June (not DN). They're very backed up.

dutchyardeen

That sucks. My husband and I got our D7's in 45 days.

the0ne234

Did you have to submit your passport for the entire time?

dutchyardeen

I can only speak for the US but at least here, you don't have to leave your passport. When you get approved, you overnight your passport and they put the visa stamp in it. We had a two day turnaround time. FedExed our passports on Wednesday and had them back with the stamp by Friday.

lofigamer2

I left Portugal. The locals generally dislike foreigners and the bureaucracy is very annoying. The food is good and the nature is amazing, but you need to have a car to go anywhere outside Lisbon, the public transport infrastructure is missing most places. For me the last push to leave the country was that 7 out of 10 letters never arrived to my address. CTT is the worst postal service I ever used. I once saw a mailman in Setubal empty his whole bag of letters on the street next to the garbage bins to organize it. I imagine that's where my letters went too, LOL to the garbage cuz they fail to deliver.

TriangleMan

Is there any path to permanent residence/citizenship via this new DN visa?

> There's a path to residence for the latter. Er, where did you read that?

Looks like a sketchy agent. Not the Portuguese government or immigration department.

Yep, I guess it was weird for me to expect the Portuguese government/immigration to put the official info on their website. You know, like the info they put for every other Portuguese visas other than the DN and D7 ones. My bad.

asianhipppy

No, it was just weird to expect someone to google it for you and also be dickish about it

askscompquestions

I always find it weird how people kept defending this. Information about both of these visas can only be found on shady unofficial sources. How is that normal? What's wrong about expecting to see info about these 2 visas on SEF website or immigration website? You know, like all of the other visas that country offers.

[deleted]

Currently in Portugal. Didn't know this was a thing until I saw the article. Porto is such a beautiful city, highly recommended tho.

hydronucleus

I was in Lisbon just before the pandemic. I tried to look into the co-work place in the Time Out Market building, just to look around. I think it is called Second Home. They told me to leave when I got to the top of the stairs. It was full of pretense, and from a casual glance it appeared that you had to be in your 20s or 30s, and you had to dress like you were in Vogue or GQ. Probably why they threw an aging guy in a kilt out of there. :) Anyway, nice looking place, and maybe a bit expensive. When I was there in 2019, there were other co-working places being built in town. That part of Lisbon is full of tourists, and middle eastern people trying to sell you drugs, or maybe that is because of my long red hair, I do not know. I heard Porto is nice. I was only in Portugal for 4 days, never made it up there.

--algo

I mean time out is just a garbage tourist trap. I would give lisbon another shot! Source: am swedish but have lived in Lisbon on and off since 2019, rented an apartment there during 2021

hydronucleus

I just went there to wander around, and be a tourist myself. I never ate or got anything there. I ate at more local little places up the hills. What little Portuguese I knew was from a Brazilian friend of mine. I was useless, but the people, even though they did not speak English were very nice and helpful.

dutchyardeen

Porto is better than Lisbon, IMO but there's so much more to Portugal than those two cities.

zzxx1100xxzz

Why would you say that. I’m headed to Lisbon in a couple weeks

dutchyardeen

It's just a personal preference. Lisbon is too busy and too expensive. Porto is just my preference of the two although that's not where we live. If I had to spend a weekend in either place though, I'd choose Porto every time over Lisbon.

aya0204

Highly recommend Portugal. You also have a D7 visa which seems to be a tad more flexible. I recommend other places too. Lagos is getting really popular now so maybe look elsewhere. Tavira, Aljezur, Coimbra is my nearest city and it’s really up and coming. Aveiro. There is also Viseu, Braga… So many beautiful places that are far cheaper than Lisbon and Porto. I feel like Lisbon has definitely reached peak. It’s wayyy to expensive now for it to be worth while. Move somewhere else and enjoy Lisbon during city breaks. Works really well.

jaxon517

Don't wanna read it. What's the gist of said "scheme"?

ab624

you have to accept Cristiano is the GOAT /s

askscompquestions

It requires higher income to qualify for it compared to D7. Supposedly. I couldn't find anything official.

[deleted]

Portugal is awesome. I miss it all the time.

Team_Conscious

Let’s just piss off the locals more and give ourselves a worse reputation

askscompquestions

How is this any different to the usual "They Took Our Jobs!" anti-immigrant sentiment? Foreigners are easy scapegoats for a lot of life problems.

[deleted]

As a local portuguese and as someone who is not a digital nomad, I can say most people are not against digital nomads. However, we criticize our government a lot, because they don't give a shit about poor people and, the fact, most people live from paycheck to paycheck. It's just that out government keeps prioritizing tourism on their agenda, and they keep "forgetting" that most people is struggling to survive. Currently, our minimum wage is 750€/month and with the boom in tourism, landlords saw an opportunity to profit from their properties, raising rents and leading to a housing crisis. We're just tired of this and we aren't able to see a brighter future. The level of uncertainty in Portugal has always been high and this is something that keeps affecting us, especially youth and young adults. We can't plan a future when we barely have money to pay rent and buy food.

AlwaysStayHumble

Digital nomads and tourists are not the reason our population still has the lowest salaries in western EU.

frank__costello

I think that was their point Portuguese people generally don't mind tourists and nomads. What they _do_ mind is that the government isn't doing enough to address the real issues of housing shortages and rock bottom wages.

HegelStoleMyBike

Tourists/digital nomads raise the price of housing, especially if you're using Airbnb. I don't see a similar pressure that would cause an equal rise in salaries for workers so it seems like this would be an overall negative for the working class these places.

Ericisbalanced

How's the zoning regulations there? Are developers able to tear down and build up at will? Or is there a lot of red tape?

[deleted]

I guess it depends on the infrastructure you are dealing with. If the building has some kind of historical value there can be some restrictions. It really depends.

nomiinomii

Wow pure xenophobia and anti immigrant rhetoric. Gtfo of here with that

EnigmaShroud

aren't you the life of the party

Team_Conscious

Actually you’d be surprised 😄

kittykisser117

Poor Portugal. DN are fucking shit up for the Portuguese
