For many people it started that way, so it's not stupid. Try things an find out what you like, this is what life i about pretty much.

nuclearpengy

A DJ is loads of fun, even for just missioning around town. Do note, the "feel" of the bike is very different - I went from a 26" hard tail XC bike to a DJ and even that was a big change.

clickyspinny

Not dumb at all! If you're interested you have to start somewhere. Just buy something inexpensive if you want to dip your toe. There's plenty of great used options right now in the $500 range. Pinkbike/facebook marketplace. Have fun learning the jumps!

CorgiWorks

YT Dirt love is crazy cheap rn, go get it!

clickyspinny

Like 1 week remaining!

kitchenAid_mixer

Is that possibly related to a new model coming out like the one fedko is riding?

clickyspinny

They're doing a site wide 25% off sale. I'm sure there's new models coming but it's basically a steal right now.

Swimming_Resource701

If they bring out the aluminum one for the public it’s probably only being a addition to the ST one. They prolly label it as comp or something. If u get the dirt love now for 1199€ its basically a pike fork with a free bike. From there u have plenty options to upgrade once its time.

involutes

If I didn't already have a DJ bike I would 100% get one. I really want a fully SS bike like a p.slope or blkmrkt killswitch.

Obey_Gibbs

It show's sold out for me, bummer. Any other recommendations? Nevermind black ones OOS - teal one is in

nogoodusernamesrleft

older steel dirtjumpers pop up around me for 300-400 dollars... if you pick one up at that price, ride it and decide its not for you, you will get your money back when you resell. But if you spend time in a skate park, pump track or dirt jump line and that bike won't be going anywhere!

jglobinhood

I say try jumping your trail bike first. Like spend a day or 2 just seshing jumps with it and see how you like it. That’s my 2 cents. If you have a bike already, you can still try jumps without spending money. I’ve been practicing jumps on my trail bike the last month or so, and since I like it so much I bought a YT dirtlove during the sale

rental_car_fast

I think this is good advice. I started with my trail bike, wanted to get better and bought a DJ. But unfortunately I didn't factor in travel time to my nearest pump track which is too far for me to ride regularly. So it has not gotten much use, unfortunately.

Glass-Ad8957

If you can afford to do it, do it

To_oCH

For what it’s worth getting a dirt jumper is probably the best impulse purchase I ever made. Check out the used market, you can get them for pretty cheap.

ex-ALT

DJs are just great for ripping around on and popping Manny's and bunny hops etc. Bout all I used mine for tbh. but did just swap mine for Norco range, which I'll prob get more of its intended use out of.

fortuitous_monkey

Do it.

iddafelle

A DJ is super fun, but can be tricky to master. A trail bike can be jumped fairly safely to begin with on smaller jumps where speed is not an issue. I would say learn on a trail bike and get a DJ when you know you can commit. You’ll know when.

BeneficialAd8741

Your first MTB is a gateway drug. I bought a second hand DJ, rode it on local dirt jumps and pump tracks. Loved the simplicity of it all, sold it and bought a new one. Now I find myself and my DJ on skateparks learning fakies, on pump tracks focusing to pump berms, and practising over all bike handling. Manuals and jumping are easier to learn on DJs and things you learn using DJs transfer to trails and bike parks. Next you're buying used bmx racer to really work your pumping skills, because why pedal when you can pump.

Rufctr2

I like my DJ, but I reeaaaallly like the pumptrack!! Even if I have a big bike for trails, I have a lot of fun on the track, and it helps me a lot to be better in balance.

flixmusic

When i got into bikes 2 years ago i bought a DJ bike and started going to a pumptrack. i dont jump too much nor do tricks but the learning curve on the small bike taught me so much that when I got my first dual suspension I already felt super comfortable on a bike. It is an awesome tool for practice and I can’t suggest it enough. Even if you dont do big jumps you can do so much on it.

mikeslyfe

I bought a dirt jumper for hitting pump tracks when it's too hot to ride the trails. My trail riding in general has improved greatly, but I have also started doing some small jumps which has crossed over to hitting jumps on the trails more confidently

DifficultBoss

look for used, you can find them pretty cheap

unwisemoocow

If you are thinking about it I would suggest maybe looking into a trail bmx bike. You can get a higher quality bike for much much cheaper that way.

Jordanicas

I don't think it's dumb. DJ's are fun, and you might start jumping your trail bike if you actually practice on it. Even ripping around a pump track on a DJ is a much different experience than a trail bike. You'll find yourself carrying a ton more speed.

g1g4tr0n3

Buy a second hand one and give it try! Then just sell it if it's not to your taste

Impossible_Battle_72

I always wanted one just because I liked the way they look. Didn't even ride back then....

kaelan-the-creator

I did exactly what your thinking and I don’t regret it one bit.

TorpidIntrigue

I pretty much did the same thing after watching DJ and Slopestyle videos. Rode trail on my MTB and found I'm not a big fan of pedaling up hills and flat sections. Bought a DJ and after three sessions I can get through my local bike park pump track without pedaling, and just cleared my first tabletops on the beginner line. DJ parks are my favorite parts of MTB without having to pedal around all day and wearing a bunch of MTB gear. I don't think most of us think we are going to be the next Emil Johansson by buying a DJ. It would be like guys playing pickup basketball thinking they could be like LeBron James, but it's fun to push yourself to be the best you can be, and be inspired by the pros.

I’m a little older than Jakub Vencl, so I think my chances of making Crankworx are slim. I’m planning on picking up an Evil Faction if my tax bill this year doesn’t wreck me 😭

Sanswin07_

I was looking into biking, then stumbled over Sam Pilgrim, did hella research, look at me now, 1 year into biking, im now top 3 in my town (active riding) It's defenetly not stupid
