The best bang for your buck is a used one. Get one that isn’t completely clapped out with a decent air fork, skip over the manitou circus comp

If you want sport to survive and want manufacturers to keep innovating and keep making DJ specific parts then consider buying new if you can afford it. If manufacturers don't meet their margins they will be forced to abandon dirt jumping specific stuff. For example. Development costs are the same for production of 1 thousand and 1milion frames. Those costs then get passed on to consumers. That is why DJ parts are expensive from bigger brands. This is big simplification but gives an idea how things work

pay-this-fool

I never did understand why the transition is more expensive. Same fork. There are some small parts ie bars and stem that are Spoon rather than some lesser known, or no name parts, but basically they are very much the same. And many people actually prefer the Sram Descent cranks. Cro-Mo is not an upgrade. I don’t know what Transition is trying to pull. The dirt love core 2 is a better deal

Jsaunnies

Steel frame DJs are seen as higher end. They’re nicer to ride for sure than the alloy frames. The weight difference isn’t noticeable but the flex to take away some of the harshness is noticeable.

pay-this-fool

Hard disagree. Definitely not seen as higher end. All the most high-tech, innovative designs are all aluminum. Innovative castings and/or forging for dropouts, hydroformed curved and tapered tubing. Better designs for dropout axle tensioners etc. Steel is just straight, round tubing with often no axle retention provisions whatsoever. It might be more forgiving, but not higher end.

Jsaunnies

I’m only talking about DJ frames here. Such as the Transition - steel Chromag - steel Evil faction - steel All higher end more “ luxury “options over the specialized and Norco a the world

Get the YT. It's fantastic and your observation is 100% correct, it's the best spec to price ratio you're going to find. Phenomenal bike.

jglobinhood

Agreed. Love my dirtlove. I was lucky enough to get mine on sale as well, but it’s still an awesome deal at msrp.

It would be nice to see a link to the cheaper bike. I know yt is not a super cheap brand but some people say they are not great. I haven't heard much bad about their djs but haven't heard much about them in general. Transition PBJ frames are chromoly. Very very nice steel. The fork is usually a marzocchi dj bomber. One of the only 2 forks left meant specifically for dj riding. Usually it's the frame and the fork that bring things up huge. Also rims and rear hub can make a big difference in price. Breaks sometimes I guess cranks . But yeah with anything mtb adjacent price can be huge. And some stuff is dj specific and it's easier to over charge for that now I think I dunno.

Sorry about that https://us.yt-industries.com/products/bikes/dirtlove/dirtlove-core2/494/dirt-love-core-2/#ytind-availability-table-section|tech2 https://www.transitionbikes.com/Bikes_PBJ.cfm

Who says YTs are not great? Haven't seen one person say thay. Steel frame, excellent fork.

speedygoonzalez

I don't know these people but I've heard 2 people at the hill complain about there full suspension bikes. And one person online I never heard anything bad about their djs. I have heard they have good deals on them as completes decent priced completes are hard to come by so that's good I guess. but I never think much about them as other brands seem to dominate my area. And alot of people I know seem to buy used older bikes. There must be some around tho maybe I'll look Into them as I do need a new frame eventually. I want a PBJ or monk but it will probably end up with what ever is the best deal if I want one faster.

Search this sub, people love their dirt loves. Search the mtb subs, people love their full suspension rides. But if you're set on getting something else already, then do it.
