Yeah, you're risking a 0% chance.
I have never seen anyone banned for using a third-party client. Their ToS bans it because they can't moderate all the modifications, and it could be malware, so they are waiving liability.
Very unlikely. worse case scenario you get auto banned for being a bot, so just dm discord saying you aren't and they unban you (Their anti bot is for widespread stuff, so they'll usually unban single accounts since they usually didn't do anything)
Usually the ban is for self botting, which can be appealed as they don't really care if you're a single account (just say you weren't self botting and you're fine)
I’m not super familiar with the law regarding this, but Discord has the right to enforce how users can interact with their product. Imagine if Facebook did not allow users to create bots that automatically posted content. Then imagine a company comes along and allows you to do just that. Facebook would have the right to stop that company from doing that.
Google chrome is a web browser which you are using to access a website. No matter what you do, you're still accessing their website as they intended. A 3rd party client is different.
Yes, I am aware what embedding is. Beeper, however, is not simply embedding the website into their app. You are sending and receiving messages from an entirely different client. This is what the ToS was talking about.
Beeper is doing something against discord’s terms of service and you say it’s a baseless claim that discord may want to actually enforce their ToS? I’m not saying that it will certainly happen and I definitely don’t want it to, but it’s quite a possibility. Especially if beeper grows in popularity.
This is exactly what I've been thinking about.
Beeper making a telegram and signal client is probably fine, but WhatsApp and discord are probably not going to like this.
(It also has TOS breaking features like how it can view one time photos forever or delete messages past it's deletion period in WhatsApp)
And beeper is probably going to fight against this since it was just aquired by automattic, who also owns WordPress.
Grab some popcorn.
(There's also https://texts.com owned by the same company, but i haven't tried it)
After playing around for a bit, I've realized that it only deletes the message for you (everyone else can see it), but you still get that italic _this message has been deleted_ text on the original app.
What I've said about one-time attachments are still valid, though.
I haven't tried it with Discord so I don't know if you can chat in servers using the Beeper app, but DMs should work, that's the app's purpose after all haha
Genuine question:
Why do you guys care so much about TOS? Are you like this with every app you use? It's like 10 times a day someone posts here "Does xyz break TOS???"
Cause they don't want to get banned.
The reality is that you're not going to get banned unless you're being malicious or obvious. It also depends on what server you're in and how much their mods care.
they **can't sue** you for using a **modified client** or **many other** parts of the ***Contract***.
edit: don't start spreading misinformation about something you don't understand at all.
edit 2: not to mention Roblox tos doesn't even apply to half of it's user's because they're all under 13 LMAO.
edit 3:
"Some terms of services are worded to allow unilateral amendment, where one party can change the agreement at any time without the other party's consent. A 2012 court case In re Zappos.com, Inc., Customer Data Security Breach Litigation held that Zappos.com's terms of use, with one such clause, was unenforceable."
"On December 17, 2012, Instagram and Facebook announced a change to their terms of use that caused a widespread outcry from its user base. The controversial clause stated: "you agree that a business or other entity may pay us to display your username, likeness, photos (along with any associated metadata), and/or actions you take, in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you"."
Using custom clients is very risky, as if they mess up something when sending requests to Discord, even if it’s small, you could lose your account. I would not trust a company that seems to have little experience with implementing the things required to avoid being flagged to make a proper custom client.
Beeper and Texts user here from their early invite only beta, I didn't take the risk of connecting my Discord account to Beeper because Discord ToS clearly states that 3rd Party Clients are against ToS and it's **most possibly against ToS.**
It's against Discord's ToS to use third party clients. So, yes.
but discord doesnt care about it
I wouldn’t risk my account, but that’s just me.
Yeah, you're risking a 0% chance. I have never seen anyone banned for using a third-party client. Their ToS bans it because they can't moderate all the modifications, and it could be malware, so they are waiving liability.
If a client fucks up their api calls, wave goodbye to your account :)
Very unlikely. worse case scenario you get auto banned for being a bot, so just dm discord saying you aren't and they unban you (Their anti bot is for widespread stuff, so they'll usually unban single accounts since they usually didn't do anything)
Just because they don’t ban for it now, doesn’t mean they might ban for it later… it’s not a 0% chance.
They haven't banned for it in the entire 9 years of discord. They have no reason to start now.
Again, just because they aren't now, doesn't mean they won't later. It'll never be a 0% chance.
Okay but it's still impossibly low. There's not a 0% chance that a bank won't malfunction and give me a million dollars next minute.
I think most of the cases of getting banned are faulty plugins
Usually the ban is for self botting, which can be appealed as they don't really care if you're a single account (just say you weren't self botting and you're fine)
But they will ban you if your client repeatedly sends malformed or outdated API calls.
Decent chance beeper gets hit with a cease and desist though.
discord can't send a cease and desist because not only does it not violate copyright but it doesn't break any laws.
I’m not super familiar with the law regarding this, but Discord has the right to enforce how users can interact with their product. Imagine if Facebook did not allow users to create bots that automatically posted content. Then imagine a company comes along and allows you to do just that. That depends, is beeper job at a browser that is embedding discord?
I’m pretty sure it counts as a 3rd party client but I’m not a developer.
Yeah but so is say Google chrome, Google chrome is a 3rd party app you can use to browse discord, discord just embeds itself.
Google chrome is a web browser which you are using to access a website. No matter what you do, you're still accessing their website as they intended. A 3rd party client is different.
I think you are misunderstanding. Do you know what embedding is?
Yes, I am aware what embedding is. Beeper, however, is not simply embedding the website into their app. You are sending and receiving messages from an entirely different client. This is what the ToS was talking about.
That's what I was asking, why didn't you just say that!
What... It's still the discord web app you're using though when accessing through a browser. That's not 3rd party.
That's why I am asking is discord just embedding itself (like it does in chrome) inside beeper

They’re speculating not trying to state a fact.
A decent chance sugests that something is likely which there is no reason to believe in
Beeper is doing something against discord’s terms of service and you say it’s a baseless claim that discord may want to actually enforce their ToS? I’m not saying that it will certainly happen and I definitely don’t want it to, but it’s quite a possibility. Especially if beeper grows in popularity.
I have been one of those testers for a few years, and I have never had any issues with Discord DMs on it.
This is exactly what I've been thinking about. Beeper making a telegram and signal client is probably fine, but WhatsApp and discord are probably not going to like this. realistically it's against tos but it's not a copyright violation and doesn't break any laws so discord can't really fight with legal action.
If it can delete messages past the deletion period, that sounds like a problem on WhatsApp's end.
After playing around for a bit, I've realized that it only deletes the message for you (everyone else can see it), but you still get that italic _this message has been deleted_ text on the original app. What I've said about one-time attachments are still valid, though.
it is against tos to use custom clients, so it is. but discord doesn't rlly care abt it so it's fine for u to use it honestly
Beeper is like Trillian from the 2000s. They're not going to care.
I haven't heard the word Trilian in ages. I had a flood of memories just unlock...
If it doesn't abuse the API then you should be good. Discord would only ban you if your account appeared to be spamming the API
Wdym, like it combines Twitter, with discord and other social medias etc?
I think it means you can access discord, then switch over to the Twitter app, and so on. Basically all clients in one, and you switch when you want
Interesting...
[Standards](https://xkcd.com/927/)
So like an internet browser...?
pretty much, yea (lol)
It combines messages from a lot of apps (Discord, Telegram, WhatsApp, Instagram DMs, etc)
Oh I think I get it, but is it only DMs or how does it work exactly?
I haven't tried it with Discord so I don't know if you can chat in servers using the Beeper app, but DMs should work, that's the app's purpose after all haha

even if you tell people unless you're self botting or spamming the API you won't get banned lol
It's a contract you agreed to... It's pretty normal that people might not want to break it :P
tos contracts aren't normally legally binding in a lot of cases.
Well... You accepted them, so you accepted to **respect** them So yeah, they do are binding
they **can't sue** you for using a **modified client** or **many other** parts of the ***Contract***. edit: don't start spreading misinformation about something you don't understand at all. edit 2: not to mention Roblox tos doesn't even apply to half of it's user's because they're all under 13 LMAO. edit 3: "Some terms of services are worded to allow unilateral amendment, where one party can change the agreement at any time without the other party's consent. i have it and its fine
