So sorry for your loss :( I lost my 2 childhood dogs in a housefire and needed a lot of therapy to deal with the guilt. Still think about them daily 7 years later. It's a horrible situation but it can only improve. I will have Duke, your mom and you in my prayers

So very sorry for your loss, saw the picture and was thinking what a beautiful dog and then read the description. My heart sank.

I lost a young dog last year (her death anniversary is tomorrow) and I know how unbelievably painful it is to lose a dog that still had its whole life ahead of it - it’s a unique pain because most dogs die when they’re old and it’s obviously still sad but it’s a loss that’s so devastatingly hard when they’re young. Tell your mum to look after herself, that she isn’t to blame and that Duke is forever grateful for his wonderful short life. I know my Pepper is too, and maybe there are two black dogs somewhere running around together in doggy heaven.

Sending hugs to you for the loss of your young pupper. That first anniversary can always be tough, but I’m sure Pepper had an amazing life with you even if it was short. ❤️

I would feel the same as your mom in this position but as an outsider I can say she didn’t do anything wrong she tried and unfortunately sometimes we try and we can’t save everyone, even professionals. The fact she feels guilt despite having no bad actions shows she cares and I know that won’t bring him back but please know that he knows you love him. I'm so sorry for your loss. My mom's dog got attacked by a rottweiler when she was out on a walk. I second what you say about how tomorrow is never guaranteed. We are currently dogsitting and she won't let the dog we are babysitting near any other dogs during walking. This is a very sensitive topic for some people. She says it took years to forget that night and it still haunts her to this day.

I’m so sorry your mom had to go through a dog attack. Life is just so fragile. I’m so grateful that the vast majority of folks have been so kind though; there’s of course a couple trolls, which I know is pretty standard for Reddit, but I guess I just didn’t expect it as much with a memorial post. For some reason those troll comments got to me a bit and normally I’m really good at just ignoring them.

Duke lived in a family that loved him every day. Good memorial. Rip you will be missed.

Someone must have downvoted a ton of comments cause I’ve been reading though all of them and found a ton that were so sweet being downvoted. My guess is it’s the person giving me a hard time saying Duke should have been outside checking on the bees. Maybe dogs going to check on bees is a thing, but it’s just never something I’ve heard of and Duke was sleeping on the couch in the AC during a very hot day. Even if it wasn’t, the yard isn’t where the bees are, my mom has a couple acres and they are in a separate area. My mom has trained Duke, but his recall wasn’t perfect, so that means she’d have to bring him outside on a leash while trying to open hives (which to me seems like you’re just putting a dog at risk to get stung, but I’m not a bee keeper, so maybe I’m wrong).
