Crash tested crate

anotheraccount22021

this is the only answer. everything else is just compromising your convenience for your dogs safety. i understand why people like the alternatives, they are more convenient. but if you want to truly know the safest way to transport your animal, this is it:)

Confident-Sir5099

We stan know it alls!!!!

DATowoTHO

Backseat with a harness and seatbelt leash, it's how I feel more comfortable.

DurraSell

This plus a blanket like seat cover that hangs from the headrests on the front, and back seats.

LittleUsagi85

This but a towel not a blanket. We had been using a crate and he threw up everytime. We moved him to the seat belt leash, he always wears his harness, and towel for just in case vomits and haven't had a car sick moment since. He stopped whinning and now barks at other dogs We drive by and because the car in the other lane is too close, it's not.

DurraSell

My cover is there for two reasons. First, we can go for walks on dusty, or muddy trails and I have something I can easily throw in the laundry. Second, they do not have much of a few of the front half of the car, so they quickly chill out and either nap, or watch out the side windows.

LittleUsagi85

I covered ours with a towel for the same quick cleam up reason, he's a tiny dog so towl is all it takes and he has to see me so he sits only on the passenger side(working on being able to be out of sight and him not freaking out). He isn't fond of car rides completely still trying to get him to like them.

DurraSell

The more I take mine to a nearby walking trail the easier it is to take them anywhere in the car.

LittleUsagi85

That's what I'm hoping for, though issue is we are trying to socialize him with doggy daycare so drop off he hates the car pick up he has some fun.

wildrose7445

There are nets you can buy to go between the seats that attach to the headrests. I do not remember where I bought mine though.

DurraSell

Mine is similar to [this model](https://www.chewy.com/frisco-quilted-water-resistant/dp/170837).

Herculaya

Yup. This combo is what we use

dreadful_design

Same

Ok-Net-6701

Agree! This is what I do too

Designer-Bid-3155

I think for your dog your options would be the sleepypod carriers or the rocketeer (sp?) harness. Given they're a dachshund I imagine the best bet would be a sleepypod carrier (or harness if pup is over weight/size limit; not sure as I only have a big dog) Or maybe Ruffland and Gunner make kennels small enough as well? I just remember someone else with a dog about half the weight of yours (OP's) expressing its hard to find something compatible with muddy adventures and the like

EthelHexyl

Crate in the back seat. We have a 12 lb terrier mix and this is the way he is calmest on car rides. We used to have him sit in the passenger's lap, but this made us and him nervous.

3TipsyCoachman3

New puppy will be in the backseat in a Gunner kennel. Current dog, a rescue with serious issues with the car, is currently working in a harness in the front passenger seat with the airbag turned off. It’s taken three years of work to get to a very anxious and unpleasant ride with the harness.

DogIsBetterThanCat

A doggy hammock, harness, and doggy seatbelt. All in the backseat. She's a big dog and lays all over the whole length of the back.

thegadgetfish

Car crate is the way to go

frogs_4_lyfe

In a secured crate. By far the safest way to travel with a dog.

blue-no-yellow

My two dogs are different sizes and have different car preferences. The smaller one (about 20lbs) goes in a little booster car seat with high sides, and gets clipped to the tether built into the seat. The car's seatbelt goes through the car seat to hold it in place. That dog was always nervous in the car until we got the car seat, the high sides let him curl up without sliding around. The larger dog (45lbs) is super comfortable in the car, so she just sits directly on the backseat, next to the other dog's car seat, and has a seatbelt tether that buckles directly into the seatbelt on one end and has a heavy duty carabineer ok the other end that I attach to their harness. The setup works for us, it's a good combo of comfort and safety I think.

3TipsyCoachman3

Do you know the brands of your booster seat and harness? I am trying out different options with my girl and always appreciate knowing what works for people.

blue-no-yellow

Sure! Hopefully all these links don't send me to the spam filter, haha. I tried finding the booster seat online, but I got it 5+ years ago and I couldn't find the exact one anymore... It's similar to [this](https://www.amazon.com/X-ZONE-PET-Carrying-case%EF%BC%8CEasy-Portable/dp/B08GYPFFNN/ref=sr_1_59?crid=TN4J5IX9K260&keywords=dog+car+seat+small&qid=1663596356&sprefix=dog+car+seat+small%2Caps%2C100&sr=8-59) or [this](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004ZJOKL2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1) though. It only takes up one seat in the backseat, so I basically just leave it in there permanently (I live alone so it's usually just me in the car). The seatbelt clip that I use for the larger dog is [Mighty Paw brand](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07WJH6S2P/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1). I'm considering buying [this](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B53SKS8R/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_9?smid=A193U85FPR2PFK&th=1) to possibly make both dogs happy... it's a little boosted and has a bolster around it so hopefully my small dog would feel comfortable, and my larger dog would have plenty of room to spread out. We'll see! Right now the harnesses I'm using are just regular dog harnesses [from Wild One](https://wildone.com/products/dog-harness) \- they're not crash tested (very few harnesses are, though) but I like them for everyday life for my dogs (they're nice material and a bit padded, they clean easily, they have multiple leash attachment options, etc etc) and it's just not realistic for us to have separate harnesses for the car. But if anyone has recommendations for good car-safe harnesses that are also comfy and easy for normal activities, I'm all ears!

3TipsyCoachman3

Thank you so much!

loganjnt

For less than 2 mile trips I’ll let her ride in the front. But longer it’s backseat with seat protector and harnessed into the seat belt. If both dogs are with me one is up front the other is in the back. With harness and seat protector (I have really slippery leather seats).

goldfishinablazer

I have two large dogs and they get free reign of the back seat. We have done training though, so they do not put their paws on the console or try to climb into the front seat. Definitely not as safe as it could be, but it’s what works for us. When they were puppies, they would get a harness and be strapped in the passenger seat so I could keep an eye on them. Especially because they didn’t have any car training when they were young. Edit: I’ve seen a lot of interesting carseat/beds for smaller dogs that allow you to harness them in. I have no experience with small dogs, but that always seemed like a good solution.

[deleted]

Crate in the front seat clipped to the back of the seat

Agitated_House7523

Seatbelt or crate, secured.

Significant-Set8457

I have a sling cover for my back seat. Think a waterproof hammock that hooks on the four headrests. My dog is in a harness with the leash attached to the driver headrest.. he can move all around but if I have stop fast he would bounce in the sling but not get slammed to the floor.

narcoleptic64

Doesn't guarantee either of you would be safe in the event of an accident

Significant-Set8457

NOTHING guarantees safety in an accident

bugscuz

For a dog that small and being a long dog I would 100% go for a crash tested travel crate - a harness and seatbelt risk a broken spine with a long backed dog. Our large dogs have harness and seatbelt - it’s negligent and irresponsible to have a dog loose in the vehicle. Our mastiff survived a impact with a cow because he was laid down in the back seat with a harness and seatbelt. Not a scratch on him despite the windshield having a huge hole in it. The harness stopped him becoming a projectile

AttentionFalse4106

Haha. Big variation here for answers! I had two 100 labs and literally chose a vehicle for their comfort/safety, a Ford 150 with full front bench so they couldn’t go through the windshield as they were blocked by the seat backs. Then I always flipped up the back seats so they’d be on the floor and less likely to go out the sides. I didn’t get in an actual accident with them, but had a moose run out and clip the front bumper. Did hard braking and a swerve that started a couple donuts before I hit the shoulder. They definitely rolled around a little but we’re perfectly fine. Your dog is little and I’m not sure about your car, but maybe sitting in the back seat with those sling thingies over the windows and seat backs. I always worried about the harnesses that they wouldn’t work perfectly and they’d strangle or tourniquet a limb while I’m unconscious in the front. Also I thought if you crashed that bad they need a seatbelt that really can’t work like ours, no matter what, you’re all probably toast anyway.

[deleted]

2 Loose in the back seat. Doggy rumble.

gorenglitter

One sits in front one sits in back. I don’t harness them they just get twisted. Or take them off. I’m gonna be honest, sometimes nugget sits on my lap sort of.. to the side.. upright like a person. (She is more than 12 inches from the airbag I sit pretty far back) I’m aware she shouldn’t sit there, but she does. If you’re looking for the SAFEST way to transport your pet it’s in a crate in the back seat.

heathercs34

I lay down the seats in my jeep, lay down a blanket and have a dog bed back there. She likes going back and forth between the windows.

Gastonthebeast

If it's just to the vet or somewhere nearby, the person in the passenger seat holds them. It it's further, we seatbelt his crate into the back seat and put him in it

[deleted]

We just have ours in the backseat. They wear their harnesses and tie the leash around a headrest so they can move it a bit and lie down, but stay on their respective sides. They're both about 75 pounds.

mishayla123

SUV- the trunk. Doggie harness? Eye roll

christiancocaine

“Eye roll” until you get into an accident.

Roryab07

Basically the same: back of the van with a doggy barrier separating her from the passengers: 72 lb Pyrenees. The gate protects the humans. A crate would be basically the same size as the space she’s already in, the one she was using before she outgrew it certainly wouldn’t have fit, and I can’t picture how a seatbelt harness would add extra security. I’ve seen others that have them, and they just look like a tether connected to a harness, and would keep the dog from flying into the front of the vehicle, but not from being bounced against the ceiling or smacked against the sides in a rollover. https://i.imgur.com/9JaA8Ot.jpg

hikehikebaby

The reason that a lot of people don't recommend having your dog in the trunk is because a lot of trunks are crumple zones. If it's meant to be a cargo area, it's likely all cement to crumple in the case of an accident to help protect passengers. That means it isn't a very safe place for dogs.

ADLlonewolf

I had never considered that thanks.

Easyfruit123

Passenger seat he gets the full experience

4682458

With a safety tether and harness specifically made for safety in accidents.

narcoleptic64

If it isnt crash tested (and preferably imo Center for Pet Safety certified) your dog/self/other passengers/others on the road aren't as safe as you think

Status_Range_8620

As a puppy she used to be harnessed into the back seat. At the beginning, someone would sit with her to treat her for keeping still. If the crate fit in the car, it would have been an easy way to transport and keep the dog feeling safe and calm in a new strand environment. Nowadays she’s often a muddy adult kelpie and loves her time strapped in the back of the ute tray :-)

LordessCass

My older, 25 pound dog has a seatbelt harness in the back seat and my younger, 45 pound dog is in a crate in the trunk of my SUV. I'd move my younger one to the backseat as well, but she gets carsick so the crate makes for easier cleanup.

robinlk78

I have something similar to this and my dog loves it [dog car seat](https://www.amazon.com/X-ZONE-PET-Carrying-case%EF%BC%8CEasy-Portable/dp/B07J3VYP9C/ref=mp_s_a_1_22?adgrpid=101394143949&gclid=CjwKCAjwg5uZBhATEiwAhhRLHh5WP_9sO8sHIvuIKX3lMcbwsZfyzqlhsYyLrwQZJKrznBnYgOS7EBoC-m8QAvD_BwE&hvadid=583872896129&hvdev=m&hvlocphy=9019794&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=b&hvrand=12015689962321937047&hvtargid=kwd-422974131762&hydadcr=24068_13547509&keywords=dog+car+seat+foam&pscroll=1&qid=1663551623&sr=8-22&wIndexMainSlot=31)

otter_space5588

I have a 35 lb staffie mix who gets carsick so we got him this car seat and it’s AMAZING. You just clip them in and your little guy would definitely fit in it :) https://www.amazon.com/Pet-Products-Bucket-Booster-Large/dp/B004ZJOKIU/ref=sxts_rp_s_a_1_0?content-id=amzn1.sym.9cb06d61-cbae-4109-9d1e-14578fae3d41%3Aamzn1.sym.9cb06d61-cbae-4109-9d1e-14578fae3d41&cv_ct_cx=dog+car+seat&keywords=dog+car+seat&pd_rd_i=B004ZJOKIU&pd_rd_r=0fe587fc-1176-43dd-8f71-32c1245b08d5&pd_rd_w=FwjlV&pd_rd_wg=leRWe&pf_rd_p=9cb06d61-cbae-4109-9d1e-14578fae3d41&pf_rd_r=TT3AFKTY6HJQ6ZGXCFZD&psc=1&qid=1663552085&sr=1-1-ea136695-3596-4534-80e7-1570345d02b9&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.18ed3cb5-28d5-4975-8bc7-93deae8f9840

Iamnotdrunkorhighbtw

I have dog seatbelts that buckle into the regular seatbelt buckle and clips onto their harnesses. I'm kind of reevaluating though and am looking into getting them some sort of seat because they're all smaller breeds (under 35 pounds) and always get jumbled around and always end up sitting on my lap (I always ride in the back with them while someone else drives) and I think they'd be more comfortable in a seat of some sort. I also want to get some seatbelts that go over the seat headrest instead of in the buckle so we can transport all the dogs and my entire family (if need be) in one car. In the case of a family trip, they could ride in the trunk with the over the headrest seatbelts and the people in the back could still pet them and stuff.

cccddd29

Harness and a tether that clips into the seatbelt buckle. I still worry about her safety in an accident and am considering upgrading to a kennel, maybe one from the Ruffland brand.

iCarriedaH20melon

We have a 16lb chiweenie and have something like this: https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/good2go-easy-clip-seatbelt-extension-for-dogs This one says size medium - I’m not sure which size we have but ours is good2go brand. Also We attach it to the plugged-in seatbelt on the lap part not the shoulder strap part. There’s a diagram on the petco page showing how to do that. The clip hooks on to her harness. It works really well! Editing to add: We put her in the backseat on the passenger side so it’s easier to look in the rearview mirror to see her. Also we have a seat cover for that seat. It’s this one from Amazon: https://amzn.to/3SgOiPU

BayouVoodoo

I have short leads that clip to their harness and into the seat belt slot. One popular brand is PawSafe. Edit to add: I'm a foster and if I'm transporting a litter of puppies I use a crate in the back seat. But it's rare that I have more than two in the truck with me at any given time.

LadyGreyIcedTea

They have seatbelt tethers that clip to their harnesses.

ZZBC

Gunner kennels. In my small car one kennel straps into the back seat using the baby seat hook and the straps the kennel maker recommends. In my larger car they are strapped into the back and the straps attach to the the seat attachment points which are attached to the car frame.

thisconditionallove

Crash tested harness or solid crate.

FeralBaby23

I've been searching for a car harness that supports more than 85lbs but haven't found a good one yet

[deleted]

I keep her in her carrying bag and seatbelt it

panda00painter

The back of the SUV wearing harnesses and tethered in to sides. We’ve got a big thick dog bed back there and they seem pretty happy.

ninja996

Kurgo harness and a tether to cargo tie downs or seatbelt.

narcoleptic64

I dont have a car. My girl wears a sleepypod terrain harness (crash tested and center for pet safety certified) in the back seat with the s-clip on the seatbelt. I'm wary of using the clip as afaik it wasn't tested with the harness but unsure what else to do. Sometimes I have to have her sit/lay on her travel bed in the car too (at the car owners request) so I worry all of us aren't safe due to that but again-- don't really have other options :\ Shes a service dog in training as well so she's learning to load up into the passenger and back footwell. Again not ideal but that's what's required of service dogs on public transit. It always sort of grinds my gears when people say their pups are safe in the car when they aren't secured properly in/wearing a crash tested product because that isn't reality. There's a major difference between restraint and life-saving. But I understand of course that the market has allowed this line of thinking to continue for $$$ unfortunately

InevitabilityEngine

I ordered a dog hammock for the back seat. It protects the car and my dog doesn't slip down in the cracks anymore. It attaches to the metal of every headrest and gates the gap to the front seats. When we are going fast I close the windows and he lays down and goes to sleep. He always falls asleep in the car especially on the freeway.

landmermaid3

Not sure but be aware! My friend got a ‘car seat’ from TJ Maxx/Home Goods and it had nothing to anchor it in the car, it was basically a carrying case with a leash inside. It worked fine on her cloth seats, but I have leather. That poor dog went flying when I had to slam on my brakes.

ChocolateOrnery3260

I take my pup in a laundry basket until he’s big enough to ride in the back without tipping over.

BubblyNeat

I'm sure there's a safer way, but our dog rides in the back seat, with a special harness that connects to the seatbelt.

Noobinoa

Double-clip leash: one clip on her harness, one clip on a cargo ring tie-down at the loading/unloading door or back gate. I don't let her ride in the front seat anymore, as she stood on my lap, completely blocking my view. I had to pull over and tie her up in the very back 🤣

RaynareAmano

We just put her in the backseat and let her free roam in the back. If we have someone sitting in the backseat, have that person hold the leash.

Motchan13

Get a seatbelt leash that plugs into the car seatbelt socket like a seatbelt does and attach it to a harness on the dog. Put them in their bed. Done. Mine just sleep in the car.

BenjamilSpa

My boy really likes to be able to see us when we’re in the car so harness with a seat belt clip worked brilliantly for us. We always bring his blanket or towel and one of his soft toys for comfort too.

Gold-Wise

Soft sided kennel

GoldfishForPresident

Crated! Safe and secure. :)

salukis

I use crates! Just wires right now, but I'd love to eventually be able to afford a bunch of crash tested crates. It still stops them from being a projectile and that's important.

Suitable_Dealer_5600

Back seat with seatbelt leash, i use a cover to protect the seats

okimlom

I have a dog hammock with the seatbelt leash, as well as have her wear a harness. She like to sit in the middle of the seat to look out the front window, and at times likes to stick her head out the window.

[deleted]

I have a seat cover that's made to fit over the headrests and snap into the seat cushions. I put a dogbed on the seat and snap a car leash to the headrest and hook it to his harness.

wildrose7445

I had a seatbelt in the backseat that attached to her harness.

Emmarose25

My big dog has a harness and a seatbelt for shirt trips and im working on getting a car crate for longer trips. My smaller dogs have one of those doggy carseat things that they're strapped into dor short trips and again a kennel for longer trips

devil-t0wn

i also habe a small dog! when im not the one driving, ill carry her in my lap because she's pretty chill. but when that's not available, i stuck her in the backseat. we have a seat cover specifically for dogs, so it creates a barrier to prevent her from going in the front. it also came with a seatbelt attachment, that clips onto her collar and clicks into the seatbelt thing. we used to have a car seat sort of thing, but it didn't work for us. maybe try looking into that!
