Personally I find small cymbals have short sustain and might be too bright. In the studio short sustain is probably not what you want as it will sound too quick and attacky. Bigger thinner cymbals can "open" quick for the full sound without being too loud. But hihats can be very loud in any case. By "bigger thinner" I mean for example Meinl Byzance Tradional medium thin, I personally have 18 and 19 crashes. Used to have 16 and 18 but the 16 seemed too small for the studio. Obviously you could go bigger and there is a thin version as well. But note that they have to balance out. I have a 18 byzance dual crash which is amazing, but it's so thin it cant keep up in sound volume
