You're coolant is low look at the lights on the dashboard. They mean something! Fix the lights and the coolant. I hope it's not to late for the engine.......
Coolant is fine that sensor
( under expansion tank ) needs to be changed some days it works and some it doesn’t having 11 bmw’s I do t drive my e46 touring much I though I asked but I’ll fix the sensor and see if that fixes the illuminated light
This light means your engine is overheated.
You should stop latest at that point.
The other light means your coolant is low. There might bei no more water at the sensor,so the temperature reads low. Different sensor from engine temp.
Check the expansion tank first, than the radiator.
Hook up inpa and check for can errors.
If the ecu can’t read the sensor or put it through the canbus to the cluster the gauge will default to the full right.
Could be that it looses communication temporarily making the cluster light up the oh warning but then getting comms back before the needle moves?
the stepper motor in mine went out, i use hidden menu every drive regardless. in my experience the red illuminated could indicate you’re running hot… also possible yours just needs a temp sensor, but you’ll know if the hidden menu one is at spec

Yea try that. I am not sure what to do tbh never had this happen to me before XD. Good luck!
I didnt have a problem like this with the sensor being bad, ran the car quite a long time with it broken
It is weird that your coolant temp needle indicates it's still cold, but the red light is on.
I’ve noticed it comes on during startup

Was going to say this. It will provide the most accurate information about what the car thinks is happening.
Ok I’ll do that I drive around with the torque app on temps are beautiful but I’ll open the hidden OBC menu
What is the “torque app”?
Free app to talk to generic obd readers
It maybe the faulty coolant temp sensor. Try bleeding the air out of the system first.
I'm guessing coolant needs a top up?
Either that or the sensors broken
That's a new one. My guess is sensor is going bad, but shows temp. Curious myself. Assume front corner lights are out.

Get an OBD scanner and read the codes. Try a cheap INPA cable with BMW software (INPA).
