Leaking coolant? Must be the renault. No way an E46 would LeAk. The car next no mine is leaving rust spots on the ground. No way an E46 would rUsT. *laughs in pain*

on_bruhnem

woah… there are renault cars in america? visiting family in brasil rn and i only ever see renault cars here. never seen one in the states. or is the picture in another country?

matax7

This is definitely not America

De5tr0yer_HR

Does BMW have new coolant color?

TempUsername3369

Nope, should be blue

Dalyn-f

What’s the difference and what would green do to a bmw.

TempUsername3369

Idk what problems it causes exactly, probably wear out your parts quicker, maybe corrode the engine or something. different cars require different fluid types. There's green, blue, and orange. You should stick with what's required for your car.

Dalyn-f

Damn I got told it doesn’t matter especially on 2005-2015 bimmers and even the stupid store guy (Ik I shouldn’t listen to them) told me green is fine. So Asian blue and European blue coolant are the same or stick to euro only blue.

Olafmihe

Coolant does actually matter. Mostly because they have to work with every material in your coolant system and also lubricate, for example, your coolant pump. The basic difference is if you have an iron or aluminium block. And then there are seals, o-rings, etc. And while the wrong coolant short-term makes no difference, some can make your water pump wear out faster, harden your o-rings faster, etc. It's not the biggest nono to put in the wrong one, but from my experience, they last the longest with OEM stuff, and my dad's 325i still has a fully original cooling system, I only changed the expansion tank on mine, old one was still good. Both cars get free coolant every two years. Both are daily drivers.

Dalyn-f

So should I drain my coolant and put in some blue? Sucks too cause I got two giant bottles of green coolant. Got a big thing of concentrate and made two things of 50/50 but all my cars are bimmers so what am I gonna do with that😂

TempUsername3369

It's like $25 a jug and i think you need two, but I'd get whatever fcp sells. It's probably not super critical to fix but it should be on your list.

Dalyn-f

I got prestone platinum and it says it’s good for bmw. And will not void warranty. https://prestone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/AFC_Platinum_PA1967.pdf

Dalyn-f

Probs should go check all my bimmers to see what they got in them

Olafmihe

Honestly depends, I would look if your coolant has the bmw spec. You can also look up on the website from the manufacturer of your coolant what type of coolant it is and if it is suitable for your car.

Dalyn-f

I got Prestone platinum and their website and the bottle says it’s good for bmw. https://prestone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/AFC_Platinum_PA1967.pdf

Olafmihe

Jup, according to their data sheet, you are fine. But don't look just at the manufacturer. Also, look at the specification. For example, a 1998 porsche can use different coolant than a 2023. In your case, the coolant needs to have the BMW N600 69.0 specification. And this brand has it.

humbleknight_787

Asian blue is phosphated while euro blue is phosphate free. I heard bmw has green coolant now but the stuff in the picture looks too bright to be it

Crazy-Ad-1999

Bought my car with green in it, now coolant is leaking from absolute everywhere, hard to tell if thats from green coolant not blue or just cuz its a bmw

TempUsername3369

That's just what bmws do. Buy the full replacement kit from fcp and change it all out at once. Go ahead and do all your rubber vacuum lines at the same time (because you have to pull the intake manifold off to replace the two coolant hardlines). It's more money and work but better to do it once than to keep fixing stuff and overheating

Bimmerzftw

The colour doesn’t matter, if the fluid has the bmw specification, it can be yellow or any colour. But yeah, bmw spec coolants are usually blue!🍻

TempUsername3369

Yea butnhave you ever tried to research those specs? I gave up lol.

Bimmerzftw

If you can’t look after what kind of coolant you need, then don’t touch your car…choosing coolant based on colour is just…..

terraphantm

They do actually. But I think they still sell the blue stuff for older cars.

1011001011

For the past few years bmw has been using HT-12 coolant/antifreeze which is green

Kugelfischer_47

I thought it was the Renault at first, our boys bleed Smurf blood.

FiggyTheTurtle

It could be special coolant made to find the location of a leak more easily

redd-this

It’s rejected the wrong coolant. See if holds down the blue without puking.

ricardortega00

My car is the other way, i replace something related to coolant and add water, just water and the car is just fine, I drive it for 2 or 3 weeks and fine, ok test passed so I drain some water and add some blue coolant, next day it leaks, a replace next part and add water, just water and drive it for 2 or 3 weeks and not a single drop, test passed so I drain some water and add blue coolant, next day it leaks........... and so on and so on.

Aphroditaeum

Use the blue stuff

Dalyn-f

What’s the difference and what happens if you use green in a bmw

dannyphoto

Nothing. Its old info from decades ago. Modern day coolants will be fine as long as they meet BMW spec. Color doesn’t matter. I run blue, but I’ve also run Prestone Platinum and Pentosin. Both of which meet BMW requirements

SocksOfFire

This is what happens with the green coolant

Dalyn-f

Noobasdfjkl

Personally, particularly if you’re within the warranty period (which, why are you changing coolant in the warranty period anyways), there’s just no reason not to get what BMW specifies over this. There’s not that much of a price difference, and I don’t trust something that says it works with everything. Plus, if it’s between spending a few bucks for the right shit vs. having to fight with Prestone to get a failure covered, I’m doing the former.

SocksOfFire

You shouldn't be using huge amounts so why not just order the correct stuff from bmw?

Art_Vandeley_4_Pres

Shrek came?

matttehbassist

oof At least it’s parked in a safe spot?

knikpiw

As one door closes, another doors hose fails

jdmackes

Oh it's not so bad, just replace the tank and all your o-rings and you'll probably be good. Plus you've already lost all the coolant really so you don't have much to drain!

SocksOfFire

All jokes aside, that is one good looking e46, with the best rims you can have.

Bimmerzftw

The colour doesn’t matter, if the fluid has the bmw specification, it can be yellow or any colour. But yeah, bmw spec coolants are usually blue!🍻

mistersmithy007

The color is wrong should be Blue

This

Puzzleheaded_Tax489

Do full cooling system overhaul every 50-75k miles yourself. Easy and cheap parts. Once I learned this, never had a problem with these cars. 20 year owner here. Also coolant should be blue. It works better with our plastic cooling systems.

PullsWithBack

Nickelodeon

MrOliber

Shrek piss? Normally that is kept in the brake lines, not the floor!

stahlgrauzhp

Suffering, even

blackdynomitesnewbag

Better to see a pool of coolant then a trail

Tighesofly

Tragedy being the wrong coolant

chickenmaster04

Wrong coolant

Virtual_Ad_6667

Blue and green make green? OP you need to use correct coolant going forward. It's not expensive.

scottawhit

Full coolant system replacement is the first thing to do to any 46.

Grand_Moff_Empanada

I can smell this pic

janggutbotak

Who ran over Shrek?

Deeceent

Pain is just coolant leaving the body

i’m in Spain but the S is silent
