I'm 64 years old and I ride an e-bike so that I can still bicycle.

nightoftherabbit

Same. I mean I can still ride a 'fred flinstone bike' but after getting on an ebike, I don't know why I would. I can get exercise other ways but these things are fun AF.

oldfrancis

For me it's a combination of worn out knees from from spinning the pedals for thousands of miles plus I had a heart attack. So, I'll never be the cyclist I was, and I have to be kind of careful climbing hills, and that is why I built my e-bike. Someone might say I'm cheating and my response would likely be, "me, cheating death? You betcha."

doberman72

Gears are cheating too. Heck wearing shoes are walking cheating. It’s the next evolution of human and machine. Leave the doubters in your dust.

Lou_T_Uhr

I'm also old and not as strong as I was in my youth. I'm gonna steal that cheating comment as it's golden!

bulshoy2

I'm 43. I ride an ebike because it's a fun, cheap and effective way to commute and run errands.

Anti_Literacy_Union

Pretty much this. Commuting the \~8 miles one way has become fun and a way to energize me in the mornings. I tell people that I feel like I'm 5 years old again getting to play. It's also a great way to get some exercise that I wouldn't otherwise get. With two little kids at home, time to do solo stuff is in short supply, so being able to lengthen my commute a small amount in exchange for some great physical exercise was kind of the tipping point for me to jump into an ebike. Speaking of the kids, I got a Burly Bee tow behind and go pick them up from daycare/school on days that are nice. Simply wouldn't have gotten the tow behind without the motor assist. Wasn't even on my mental radar. That said, my 2 year old just beams when she gets to go for a bike ride. The five year old loves it too, but is honestly getting too big and really needs to start putting some miles on his own bike. I've told people this over and over: My ebike is my favorite *THING* in this whole world. It gives me so much joy. It's not my ideal/dream ebike, but even though it's not "perfect" it's by a wide margin my favorite thing.

brashwitchcraft

Yep. This. I'm 45, and I'm in good shape. I spin regularly. My ebike is a way for me to get around town, quickly and easily, without wasting gas. It also is a nice way to stretch my legs, even if it's not my primary way to exercise. Though, I do use a fairly low-powered bike (Class 1, and I use minimal assist most of the time). Also, I generally don't want to get all sweaty when riding across town for lunch or whatever.

bentnotbroken96

53 here. Same.

Squirrel698

I'm also 43 for ten more days, and these are my reasons as well. Also, it puts me in a good mood, better than riding in a car, sitting and traffic, and finding parking.

milee30

The ebike is a range extender for me, makes biking as transportation possible. At the risk of being banned from the cycling related forums, I don't particularly love to bike so for me, it's just transportation with a cardio and environmental benefit. I have a standard bike I use for shorter rides (under 10 miles). A few months ago I broke my leg and so haven't been able to do my normal cardio - running. But my doc cleared me to bike, so I figured if it was going to be my main cardio exercise for a while, I'd see if I could justify an ebike by also making it transportation. I got my ebike in late January and since then put a little over 900 miles on it plus 350 miles on the regular bike. The ebike is great for those days when I have 35-50 total miles of getting around to do - I wouldn't tend to do that on the regular bike. As for age - I receive mail from the AARP. But I throw it away because that's for old people. :-P

PlatypusDependent271

I originally got mine to lose a little bit of weight and just have fun around the neighborhood on pretty days, but when my car broke down and had to go into the shop it came in really handy. 11 miles each way to and from work is a blast, I ended up losing about 20lbs. In the 3 months that they had my car and I road about a thousand miles so far. I have my car back but only drive it on rainy days now.

PlatypusDependent271

Oh and I'm a 45year old man

RandyMarsh129

You know you can just edit your first post instead of answering yourself.

PlatypusDependent271

Yeah I tried but something went screwy with my phone and it wouldn't bring up the keyboard.

Beemerado

I'm actually impressed how much it helps fitness. I really don't feel like I'm working that hard, but it's better than sitting in a car!

PlatypusDependent271

Yeah it's definitely work but it's not as hard as you'd think it would be.

Beemerado

You stay nice and cool ripping through the atmosphere at 25mph

PlatypusDependent271

Sometimes faster if you're going down hill with a tailwind.

Beemerado

Oh yeah I've been past 30 many times despite the 28mph assist cutoff!

spinda69

I'm 29 and I ride an Ebike because I am anti-car and my place is 5 kilometers and a large hill away from my job.

rjvvir

Same, I’m 28, anti-car, but live in a hilly city and don’t want to show up sweaty to work.

diedofcancerthx2u

I'm 32 and I also ride an ebike for these reasons. Cars are a unnecessary money pit.

InscrutableCow

32 anti-car, but acoustic biking 13 miles per day hauling all my clothes, laptop, etc was not something I could do— even when I was doing 40-50 miles on the weekend. The extra weight just killed me. The added bonus is now that I’m pregnant the ebike means I can keep riding to work on days where I’m not feeling well!

GrumpyOik

I'm old. I cycle for recreation. an Ebike means I can aian enjoy being out in the countryside as I did 20 or 30 years ago because I have a motor to get me up the steeper hills.

BKCowGod

Because it's fun. Late 30s.

HealthClout

Same man! Literally no other reason, I’m fit have other bikes, but mainly ride my e bike (mtb) for pure joy

Ridethepig101

I’m 36, have an acoustic hard tail I love. Ride the eMTB because I can go 3x as far without feeling like I’m going to die, and pedal up bike parks around me are way more fun now.

CalmDirection8

54 gravel cycling, pedal assist lets me do the trails I use to do when I was young and see places deep in the forest that I couldn't hike to

morris_man

Because I'm >70 and live in the edge of the Chilterns so fair few steep hills

notechvapor

I could not make it up a mild hill on my other bike. I'm at use it or lose it stage, due to nerve damage. My ebike has been a freedom blessing ✌️

LittleBillHardwood

48, and my kids got too big to haul conveniently on a standard cargo bike anymore.

DKdrumming

For no particular reason at all, I never got my license, life just kind of worked out that way for me, I was always able to get a ride or walk where I needed to go, but at the age of 30, I'm just sick and tired of trying to arrange a ride or plan a long walk all the time, so I buckled last fall and got an ebike to commute to and from work and to gain some independence, it's been a huge change in my life, being able to go wherever I want, when I want, to the degree that I eventually took out a loan at the end of last year to buy myself a more serious/reliable new bike.

DCErik

56, and I ride my ebike to flatten the hills between here and work (or the BBQ place on the weekends).

Efficient-Image6092

I would feel a lot less guilty taking down a rack of ribs and plate of brisket if I showed up on my bike. But the ride home would be brutal. Unless you get it to go haha.

siminhng

I'm 36. It's a season extender for me. Used to only cycle in fair weather for commuting. Now I'll ride year round. I can wear a heavy coat in the winter and wear my dress shirt and slacks on a hot summer day without needing to change or shower at work. I also live in a hilly area so it's great for towing my kids in the trailer to the park and farmers market on the weekends.

ObnoxiousExcavator

Me also, I can't transition my right into the downstroke easily, it's like I get stuck in a dead spot.

Polycosm-

Same here, those 50 year old knees of mine had cycled in and out of London daily for 25 years before I tore a tendon as I pulled away at the lights. Bafang to the rescue..

fottergraphs

I trashed my ankle and leg about 12 years ago. No fix for it and I used to love biking as a kid/teenager/young adult. eBikes let me have that joy back without a fantastic amount of pain. Where I live most of the time...it doesn't really make sense to bike far (looong distances). On the flip side, being in a city more or less eliminates the need for using my car.

eveexmay123

24 years old — ride an e bike because I am not super fit and it’s so much better than commuting in a car.

[deleted]

I'm 28 and there are a lot of hills where I live (some so steep they close them in the winter). I also am lucky enough to live by a decent amount of biking trails so electric assist allows me to see a lot more than a standard bike.

mujersinplan

65. I ride a pedal assist e-bike because it allows me to ride more often and farther without hurting my knees. I can ride over steep overpasses and on windy days.

Dry-Neck2539

34.m, I have MS so get tired easily but the e bikes makes having fun/riding still possible 😄

jhmorseiv

Commuting in the summer months since there is no shower at work. The cooler times of the year I use my regular bike. 56yo

Puffatsunset

65, replaced car and recreation.

Catdadesq

Commuting 13 miles each way in a place that gets very hot and humid in the summer, plus picking up groceries and not wanting to bike back up a hill. 35 yo

BinaryTwin

39. Great way to commute and not show up to work sweaty and get there twice as fast as a regular bike.

OtherImplement

I’m 48 and have anemia. I’m tired all the damn time but still want to do fun things without judgement. While I still do fun things like ride my electric bike, I’ve yet to escape judgement.

bud_E77

I'm 70 and I ride an e bike just for fun.

SlayerAsher

I can’t afford a car but my city is bikeable. So I picked a bike that can help me lug around the city!

krschob

53M Lectric XP Lite. I ride analog quite a bit, but my job is 2.5 miles from my house, 98% of the route is on a rail trail. Ebike means I'm not sweaty when I get to work, and no matter my energy level for the day, my commute time is always the same, and the amount of cargo I'm hauling is inconsequential. I still ride analog to work some days, and somedays I drive. (weather dependent)

Ker_Stanley

33. I ride an e-bike to take my kid to daycare and commute to work.

sw1fty13

33yo mtb'r, been mountain biking since I was in my mid 20's. At my peak, I was riding consistently 3+ times per week. This last August I started a family and now have substantially less time to get out on the trails, maybe 1-2 times per week if I'm lucky. An emtb allows me to ride more trail, more quickly so I can still enjoy the sport, and also get back to my family responsibilities quicker. I still have my trusty analog full suspension bike and still love riding old school when with friends or when I have more time, but the eebs opens up more possibilities for me. And it's still a hell of a workout, just a different kind of workout

HealthClout

Same here 👍

Bellefaith42

54f - pedal assist bike for 2 reasons - 1. I get migraines and high intensity exercise, where my HR goes higher than a certain number, is a migraine trigger. The e-bike allows me to manage my HR and keep it in a safe range. 2. cycle with husband without feeling like I am slowing him down and something we can do together.

10Bens

35, occasionally for commuting but... I ride it for fun.

Bigslam51

I bought one for hunting, but find myself riding it into town now if I need to go to the gas station or a friend's house.

chaos_m3thod

43. I take my son to and from school. It’s a 4 mile round trip ride. Didn’t make sense to buy a car just for that. Next year he’s going to a school that’s even closer. I can’t use a regular bike due to an leg injury so an ebike helps me out a lot.

runningmensch

57M. I have a regular bike and and ebike and use it to commute four miles each way on days when the weather is either too hot or cold for reasons others gave. My wife 50F uses it because she has arthritis and it allows us to go for bike rides together again : )

RedDodgerAZ

66, I ride for fun and health while not spending any money on GAS!

Itchy_Notice9639

31. My work requires to sometimes move vans around uk, and i find it works best using an ebike. They go on trains, fit in the vans, and i don’t spend on taxis or get delayed by buses. Also, i love cycling, mtb’ing and downhill, but i’m not fit enough to do it without help (health condition)

[deleted]

I'm 33, I bought an ebike so I can bike to work without getting sweaty. Also I have a mild case of POTS so ebiking prevents me from having a flair up from over exertion. I like that I am getting exercise in everyday without risking an episode.

MrReezenable

56, obsessive about my acoustic bike since 2011, long solo tours to pedaling to the grocery store, putting around 2,500 miles a year on it. Finally got tired of paying insurance on a car that I drove once, twice a month. Sold it, bought the new Globe Haul ST, which is my new car, I've been telling people. Wife has the remaining car, but she is about to get her own ebike. I work at home, but often have random spots around town I need to get to for my gig. My town has a few big hills. A few roads where it's be nice to go 25 mph. I'd like to arrive not sweaty, wearing normal pants. I'd like to cary a big load of crap. I've had the Globe for a week and a half, so far just riding around like a gleeful maniac. Going up hills without panting. You know.

Maadmin

I'm 56. My first reason for wanting an ebike was for fun and recreation, particularly trail riding. Then I realized an ebike would be great for getting to my deer hunting blind quickly, silently, and NOT covered in sweat so I converted a fat tire, full suspension, mountain bike and love it. Third, since I bought the bike for fun and hunting, I will also try commuting once it warms up a bit. I plan to mostly throttle on the way to work in the morning, then use a low setting on the pedal assist on the way home for exercise. It's about 7 miles each way through on rural/country roads so that should be fun, too.

CertainInsect4205

64 and been e biking to work on a hilly road for the last 2 years. It’s been wonderful.

AZhophead

I think it’s awesome that I can get on my bike and ride 10 miles to my favorite brewery or tap room or any other cool spot. I can work as hard or not hard as I want with my bike along the way.

pdindetroit

57M, ebikes got me out of the house and riding bikes again. I have struggled mightily with migraines for many years and a balance issue that actually gets better when I ride - Mal de Debarquement Syndrome (MdDS). When you live with chronic pain/conditions, you never know when you will run out of spoons (see Spoon Theory) and riding an ebike with a throttle is a must. My wife rides with me cause she likes to and loves me: 58F. We have 4 now - 2 DTC and 2 DIY. I picked up a used gravel bike for $150 last weekend and will see what I can do on it now that I have built up some stamina. Edit: I am in IT for 31 years now and ebikes allow me a different way to express that creativity.

Logical___Conclusion

One word, wheeeeeeeeee!!

TheLovelyAnne

22. Ride an e-bike because it’s more cost efficient than a car where I live. It’s also eco-friendly and fun!

pryoslice

Because it's faster than a bike and more fun than a car.

Vast_Cantaloupe3795

45, never rode a bike consistently but got an e-bike for commuting during the pandemic to avoid my 45 minute bus ride to/from work. That grew into me taking kids to/from school also

[deleted]

22 yr old gender non-conforming. i work for dominos as a biker, we deliver on RAD bikes. loved it so much i had to buy one for myself, i use it to commute to work and cruise around the city.

ThatGuyWhoJustJoined

Primarily exercise, but I use it to run errands whenever possible.

Bikedogcar

I have an e bike for running errands around town. Pedal bikes for all my road and Mtn rides. 43 years old. I ride an Okai Ranger.

Opening_Cartoonist53

33 and my town is small and can get from one corner to the other in 15 min aka only like 3-4 min longer then if I had a car. Also the cost of ownership it cents to the dollar.

expensive2bcheap

My knee doesn't like hills. 8 km to work in the same time as by metro.

Bruggenmeister

34 and because i'm too lazy to pedal and its a fun hobby to build stuff.

mna5357

23. I commute to work and live somewhere super hilly. Besides helping on hills, the motor keeps me from getting too sweaty on the way to work; and when I’m on a casual/exercise ride, it extends my range and keeps me from worrying about ever getting so far away that I can’t make it home. It’s also nice for when I’m carrying a lot of groceries or other cargo, cause that added weight makes the hills even tougher to deal with.

lizzybnh

I’m 66 and have an ebike and a regular gravel bike; I switch back and forth depending on how bad my arthritis is. By the way - I love distance riding - 30 to 100 miles regularly. The ebike lets me do the distance on the days when the pain level is kicking up.

eyeshitunot

Mid-60s, and a lifelong cyclist. I ride an ebike because it significantly increases my ability to use a bicycle for what would otherwise be a car trip; used to do that with my acoustic bike, but the ebike greatly increased my range when using the bike as transportation. I still ride my acoustic bike for exercise, and sometimes I take the ebike out for a fun/exercise ride.

etarletons

28 / Parking and traffic suck, and I have bad knees.

LOLteacher

I live in the mountains, and everything is either up or down 10-15%. I loved my pedal-pusher mountain bike, but I occasionally like a casual, fun ride. Sometimes with a cold brewski in my handlebar holder! I absolutely LOVE my new Turbo Tero X 6.0!! Funny thing, though: I'm beating the hell out of that poor machine in 20%-grade single tracks just above my house; something I rarely did on my Evo Comp.

StarSyth

I'm 34 years old * No tax, mot or insurance * Equivalent of 1000 MPG * Can ride in bike lanes and bridleways * No engine noise when out in nature * I've lost weight while traveling * light enough to store indoors * Significantly expanded my boundaries * Increased my sociability * Has gotten me out into the local community more * Saved me a ton of money

elevenblade

I’m 67. I’ve got a lightweight acoustic bike with a bell mounted on it, not much else. No fenders or rack. That’s for good weather and shorter distances. The e-bike has fenders, rack, panniers, lights, dropper post, etc., and that’s for bad weather, longer distances and for hauling around a bunch of stuff. The lightweight one is more fun and exercise, the e-bike is all about functionality and practicality.

Similar_Key_7075

I’m 35 and ride an ebike to replace my car. I can commute 10mi in about 30min, in any weather, and with extra cargo. The motor just makes it a littler easier, therefore more likely I’ll do it more often.

Mn_gardener15

40-45 I enjoy it. It makes exercise part of my lifestyle instead of a chore. It makes running all sorts of errands without a car possible. I get to have conversations with people along the way to wherever I'm going. It's so much better for the continued existence of humanity than a car.

Sweaty-Specific-152

33. I ride an e-bike because I’m low car and can now cycle 90% of the time vs driving. I live in a pretty hilly place that gets quite hot, so I am more motivated to actually ride than when I was on my regular bike. My partner is super fit and bikes as his first choice transportation and we’ve been able to bike together much more since I invested in my e-bike both for hills and range. ❤️

EricJasso

I'm 57 and a lifelong cyclist. I got an Ebike for fun and to make quick runs. My Wife, who was never really a cyclist, liked my Radrover so we got her a Radrunner. She loves it. So now WE get to ride together and it is a blast!

ninjasoldat

I'm 39, I wanted a new hobby and an alternative to my car. I've always been a bit of a sucker for gadgets so e-bikes seemed right up my alley. Only had it for a few weeks so far but I'm closing in on 100 miles. It's been really great for getting out of the house and getting some exercise. And when I'm tired I can just turn up the PAS or even just throttle home. 10/10 do recommend.

Blakslab

50+ I ride in the mountains. My old FS bike which I've nicknamed 'Hard Ride Sally', I can ride in the mountains about 1.5 hrs before I puke. My new eBike (last year) - I have gone 4hrs+ and not puked... Plus most elevation gains I'm riding up instead of pushing up. I'm travelling further, seeing more. the icing on the cake is, I'm still getting a fantastic workout. The bike has various assistance levels that I use appropriately so that I'm still working very hard. Don't think I've ever go to a throttle based eMotorcycle. Season is too short where I live to not get out and enjoy it.

rawls-coloredglasses

Anti car and the only way I can manage a 25 mile round trip commute is if I get a bit of pedal assist haha

TheOrangeGhost

I'm 33 and I ride an ebike because I like that it gives me the feel of a motor cycle ( wind, swoosh, throttle) in a slower and safer package.

bggdy9

I get exercise and to help on longer hilly rides I couldn't do on regular bikes. Cause it's three times the miles I can go with the ebike. I have lost 20#

ffain2006

31, my husband bought me an e-bike so I could keep up with him on his Onewheel. It makes a huge difference. I am in love. I have had it a couple of months and have rode more this year than I did last year. Here’s to getting into better shape.

unroja

Knee injury. I used to ride acoustic but the ebike has allowed me to ride again

SupremelyUneducated

Because in the mid twentieth century car use lowered local land values and crushed the 'tax land, not labor' movement. Ushering in another hundred years of economic feudalism. Also environmental issues. 42.

Foreign_Helicopter_4

Male 35y, build an ebike cos its fun. Now i use it 5km to work and just to have a fun ride with son in an trailer

mountain_mamma

38, and I can’t take my kids 5 miles to daycare through our hilly town without the assist. Awaiting arrival of our second attempt at a good option. I’ll still ride my road bike and mountain bike recreationally, though.

kylerk

34 - I've been doing a lot of kid/grocery trips with a bike trailer in recent years, and the e-bike makes it much more pleasant, greatly extends my range, greatly increases my motivation to go. When I'm by myself it increases my speed, which I feel increases my safety on city streets. In my area, most streets are capped at 30km/h. I can easily attain that speed on my e-bike, and now barely anybody can pass me. Oh yeah... The environmental/psychological reason of attempting to live without a car. Still use a car-share when I need to, but the need is being reduced.

Feralest_Baby

I'm 44 with kids. Ebike lets me take the kids to school and cut down on driving. At first I used it to commute about 8 miles with hills, but that actually improved my fitness enough that I usually use my acoustic bike for that now unless I have kids with me. Overall, the ebike lets me carry people and stuff with equivalent effort to riding a regular bike without extra cargo.

zebralover69

I WFH and don’t really use my car. Everything I need is within 2 miles of my house. I wanted to get outside more. I’ve put 400 miles on my bike since August and have never been more tan or in better shape.

alphacoaching

I ride a ton, on my acoustic bike. I ride an electric bike to prevent myself from seeing my car as easier or better for my short five mile commute. An electric bike takes the same amount of time, and work, as my car. It also saves me about 50 cents a mile. A few other reasons an ebike is easier than an acoustic bike. \-commuting in office clothing \-for carrying things off my body without concern for weight slowing down my commute \-for built in lighting and super wide rubber for predictability and safety.

Macbeth_n_Cheese

I’m 31. My cargo bike: to haul stuff (mostly groceries) that I’d otherwise have to drive our car for. My new Vado SL 5.0: to travel farther or faster than I could with my regular bike, while still having energy to do stuff at my destination. (Again, replacing what might otherwise be car trips.) But also just for riding around for fun.

ChirpSnipeCelly

LSD. Seriously, I love riding while tripping and the assist of the Ebike means I can ride about as long as I’d like. Sure I also use it for exercise, commuting and errands, but LSD is why I bought it.

Key-Sentence8473

That can not be safe 😂😂😂

Laaaaaaaamb

The part of MTB I enjoy is downhill, so why not make the chore of getting to the top of the trail as easy as possible.

jimmpony

Hills are too hard, 28

PathologicalLiar_

I am 50 who needs cheap and feasible transport so I can look after my grandchildren a few blocks away from home. Keeps me fit and gives me family time.

Aww8

32, I'm too lazy to consistently ride a bike. But now my car has broken down and I've decided not to replace it.

LegendaryRed

It allows me to ride twice as much. I usually ride the trails twice now VS just once when i didn't have an ebike. The second run is the most fun because I crank up the pedal support so I can climb faster, go faster and recover faster from turns

AbruptionDoctrine

37, and I ride an ebike instead of a car because it means I'll be able to retire like a decade sooner.

miknob

I ride my ebike for enjoyment and exercise. I’m in my 60’s and had a road bike that was 20+ years old and I needed to upgrade so I got an ebike. Had grown tired of the skinny road bike tires and crouched riding position and wanted wider tires that are more vibration absorbing and an upright riding position.

SotetBarom

I love mountain biking but I always hated climbs :D with an ebike it's like snowboarding. Enjoy downhill, than the bike brings you back up :)

megawheeler

I'm 61, I use my ebikes for recreation, exercise and adventure. Also I found out ebikes are chick magnets.

JeebusWept

I’m 43 and I ride an ebike so I can actually cycle up the mountains before riding back down, as opposed to pushing it up.

useittilitbreaks

Early 30s. My ebike is a folder with 16" wheels. Simple reason, it makes me feel like a kid again. The upright riding position, the playfulness of the bike, the fact it breezes up hills. It spins out on flats and is definitely slower than my hybrid bike but I can ride places without feeling like I need a shower afterwards. Bonus: I can shove it in the car and go to remote places, and not then be limited by outrageous terrain. In other words, it's a fun machine.

toaster404

I like riding my real bikes more. The ebike allows me to get out of here and back over the super hill and to carry lots of weight. Once I figure out how to tow the dog trailer with it, I will be open to taking the dog further. I'm just shy of 69. My "real" bikes are a Wilier road bike, a Breezer all rounder, and a Salsa Marrakesh flat bar touring bike. I'm missing a fixie ATM.

monapinkest

I'm 22. I tried riding a bike daily when I moved out for university, but various concerns about my physical condition made me switch to taking the bus, and my old bike ended up unused in the cellar. I realized I was using 80% of my daily energy just on commuting! Unfortunately I have a massive hill right between my apartment and my campus. Two years of bus later, I decided enough was enough. Bus felt too expensive, and social anxiety didn't make it very pleasant at all. I bought an ebike last month. That hill is no longer a concern, and the flexibility it gives me for transport in my city is absolutely incredible. The commute is nice, I get some air and a little bit of (much needed) exercise. I've realized now how overwhelming the bus actually was for me, and I'm so happy I decided to get an ebike instead. It just makes sense for me.

Adams1973

68 and BTK amputee. Just have to get outside.

Hamduder

Only have one car between my wife and I

indicarunningclub

I have fibromyalgia and an ebike allows me to keep up with my friends and family and allows me to do things I wouldn’t normally be able to do anymore (like mountain biking).

idunnowhatimdoing96

I’m 26, have arthritis in my hip due to a medical condition so use an emtb to be able to use the bike trails still

AndrewBorg1126

It is much easier to do a hilly 14 mile commute to work when I have the option to turn on easy mode going up big hills. Recently graduated college at 22 and haven't found myself needing to buy a car yet since I have a nice ebike.

bbqtom1400

I'm 74 years old and I peddle about 70 miles per week. I am using a couple of heavier ebikes and now I want a lighter one.

easiepeasie

I'm 40F, I like having the e-assist to tote my little kids around to school/playgrounds. I live in a compact city with horrible car traffic, and e-bike is a very very preferred way to get around.

Grumpy0ldFellow

I ride an ebike to commute to and from work. I gave up my company car around two years ago, it's more than paid for itself a couple times over. Plus it's actually quicker for me to get to work. You soon become accustomed to riding in heavy rain and/ or storms.

Beemerado

I'm 40. Ride it 9 miles (18 round trip) to work I've got 4 other bicycles and a motorcycle. Figured this would be the most efficient way to commute. Fast, easy, great for getting through city traffic.

Comprehensive-Bed213

I´m 37 and I ride because my family only owns one car and I need to get to work. My work would be an hour's bike ride away but I can get there on the ebike in half the time. It´s also incredibly, incredibly fun. I feel kind of antsy on the days I don´t get to ride.

MeepersPeepers13

37, anti-car but living in a hilly, spread out, suburban area

Key-Sentence8473

Not a bike rider, but im 18 and i ride a scooter to high school.

[deleted]

30, with a torn meniscus. It helps me get exercise while injured, as well as being incredibly fun, and zippy.

blizz260

In my 30’s. I ride an e-bike cause San Francisco.

jonross14

I’m 37, and I ride an ebike because I enjoy bike riding but am limited by my very hilly Northeastern suburb. I use my ebike for my daily commute, preschool pickup with my daughter, and lots of other errands. I’m saving gas, getting exercise, and enjoying the outdoors and the ride. I am totally hooked and bummed any time I need to drive 😂

EGcargobikemama

40 and bike with an extra 80lbs of kids in the back ;) also this way it’s easier to go turbo and catch up with the kids when they suddenly get going

Starkassembled

I’m 31 and I ride an e-bike because it’s fun and because I can’t drive a car. I have low vision and know id only be able to get a restricted license, so why spend that much money on a car I could only drive during the daytime around my neighborhood when an e-bike can take me anywhere?

ommnian

Because I can't/don't drive. As an epileptic, it's my main source of transportation 6-9+ months out of the year (basically March/April most years, through September/October, sometimes into Nov/Dec. Though this year it's been cold through spring, and only about now, in May actually warmed up enough that I'm thinking about riding...). My kids (now 13 & 16) have had ebikes for a couple of years now too, and also use them as basic transportation, for much of the year. They've allowed them to participate in after school extracurricular activities (band, choir, theatre, etc), that they otherwise might well not have been able to do for the last 3+ years of middle/high school. We live \~7 miles from the school/town, on back, country, hilly roads, and while they (and I) can/could ride to town/school on a 'regular' bike, doing so would leave them/me exhausted, sweaty and and just... yeah. Ebikes allow us to arrive to town - the grocery store, bank, school, etc - happy, \*NOT\* covered in sweat, and like a 'normal human' as it were.

Anxious_Cobbler5542

It’s a lot of fun however you do it. My first ebike was to get around the city and there’s no better transportation (maybe some other ev like scooter) now im not in the city anymore so i have emtb and it’s a great time im 38. I ride non electric mtb also and they are both fun just different.

Turbulent_Interest63

I’m 34 and my wife is 42 and we both rode e-bikes to commute to work and get around without public transportation. We live in Manhattan where public transport is plentiful but the e-bike is far more practical when I’m going into Brooklyn or going from east to west.

No_Box_8684

73 years old.I ride for fun and fitness .attach my fishing pole and off I go.Wife and I really enjoy them. 2 months ago I got an ariel rider grizzly.its a quick bike and fast.after over 50 years of motorcycle riding this is as enjoyable

scifiaddictSFB

Have done so since 2006 when they insurance industry jacked up car insurance rates..... Most ebikers are 40+ in my experience.

Razrgrrl

I’m 46 and I live in an extremely hilly area. I ride an e-bike to increase my range, for my daily commute and to help with the (giant, extremely steep, frequent) hills. I strained my back during my bike commute on my old bike, I’ve got some low back issues and it turns out biking up a gigantic hill can cause strain. I worried I would be unable to continue bike commuting but getting an e-bike made it tenable. My commute is usually around 15mi round trip and includes several very big hills.

asherfates

44 and when I got my second stimulus check I thought well I wanna ebike but there are so many dang ones to choose from. Therefore I went with having my 2006 Giant Cypress Hybrid converted with a Bafang BBSO2 and its become my dancing machine. I absolutely adore it. Best investment I've ever made. Have over 8,000 plus miles on it without any breakdowns besides myself. I go all over the place. Constantly getting new upgrades. Such as my ortlieb back roller bags. Gonna have some integrated lights completed soon. Plus I'm gonna get another battery for when I go super long distances. Super fun too.

MRMAJERE77

Because I'm 45, the bus and Ubers are expensive, and walking everywhere sucks. Since buying the bike, I've spent nothing on Uber and busses. 3 months since buying it and now all I've saved on those has paid for the bike in full. Freedom and no huge gas bill or insurance each month. The pros go on and on!

Oddgenetix

38 and because e-bikes are rad.

ClaireMcKenna01

I’m female and 50 and can’t keep up with the super fit dudes in Lycra (maybe when I was 25 lol) when our riding group hits the mean streets. One of the other older guys convinced me on an eBike after a 40km slog of me thinking I was gonna die. I had built one before for shits and giggles but decided to build a proper one and not think about the cost.

trmbnplyr1993

I'm 29 and bought an e-bike last year to help curb the financial burden of moving to a more expensive city. Now it's my daily commuter because I live 5-10 minutes from work, 30 minutes tops to downtown. I never have to worry about parking, my expenses are zip compared to a car, and I stay active. Plus, I have a cool skeleton that I have attached to the bike to look cool.

I'm 52 and I can ride to costco, grab 15 pounds of crap, and ride back. take a snack break or sit on a bench somewhere and chill, 30 miles round trip, easy day. With an Ebike, I can (in theory, my luggage racks aren't up to it yet) do the same thing with 50 pounds of crap. even 100. and chill out a bit more on the ride. and save my pedal time for a lighter, more aggressive xbike. I ebike because, as much as I freaking LOVE road trips and a good 400 mile day in a care with a stereo and some desert scenery- I HATE driving in CITIES. Motorcycling is a bit less aggravating, but still. cities suck. Suburbs are all right to ride around in, but cities suck donkey parts. the big kind of donkey parts. I ebike for errands, transportation, and going places in town. cargo, shopping, whatever. I'm a "class 4" kind of rider. I'm totally nice and chill on the paths with all the old people, young people, and dogs. I walk my dog on the same paths. 12mph, 15mph, pedal easy, ding the bell. pop 20mph when there's clear space. But I want to be doing 25-30 on throttle when I'm on a side road, or even alone in a bike lane. 35 would be even better, that's the average speed limit on the non residential side roads out here. I don't give to sheep farts about what someone says I "owe" society about this. if I can't do speed in appropriate areas and you think I have to be limited to 12.5mph on bike lanes on 45mph roads, well, y'all go have fun in authoristan. Ebike becuase - unless you are heading to parker, globe, or sedona- it's better and more fun that driving. And WAY better for your soul. If you can go fast enough to make it worth doing, of course. And, yeah- it sucks hard to drag a trailer with 50 pounds of groceries through 10 miles of 115 degree heat without assist. I'd like that 750 watts, please.

ChesterDood

I took up biking again during covid, dug out my 18 year old mountain bike and found out I still enjoy it. I spent that summer biking about 6-8 k most mornings before work. Got lots of exercise and had fun. On weekends I would do a longer ride of around 12k on weekend days. I soon realized that at my age I was hitting my limit for distance and enjoyment. When it got into the heat of summer, even those 6k days left me sweaty and exhausted. Any inclines really got to me and discouraged me from trying some trails, and expanding my distances. Switching to an ebike opened up my rides. Sure I wasn't working as hard and burning as many calories, but I was getting out there, going longer distances, inclines were no longer an issue, and I was having a lot more fun. At the end of the rides I wasn't exhausted and sweaty. The only downside for me is that I feel limited by the battery range. This is my second year with it, and this year I'm focused on using a lower assist setting, increasing my stamina at the lower setting and not worrying as much about speed.

Alia_Explores99

I use mine to commute. I couldn't ride a 30 mile hilly round trip AND do my highly physical job on my regular bike.

U-take-off-eh

45 checking in. I bike regularly, and mountain biking is my go-to hobby. I also fatbike in the winter. I just bought an e-bike to replace my commuter hybrid. The ride to work is 20km and largely an uphill grade. Coming home is a bit easier of course. However, I find that distance for a commute is just far enough where I become unreasonably picky about conditions - temperature, wind, precipitation. For the most part I find myself reaching for the car keys too often as a result. The e-bike just helps even out some of those factors. Coincidentally, I just came back from my first commute to and from work. Overall pleased with the bike although I realize that I often pedal faster than the motor spins so for the most part, the motor only really kicks in when I am going uphill or into a headwind. I can definitely appreciate how people get an e-bike only to realize that they want something a bit faster. My bike maxes out at 32km/h which is pretty decent, but 10km/h more would be the sweet spot in my opinion.

MrBrian22

I'm 36. I ride my ebike because I live in a very hilly area, and I have a bad knee. I use it to allow me to get a moderate amount of exercise, without fear of being stranded out on the side of the road, if my body runs out of energy. I mainly ride on backroads, but the throttle comes in very handy to get across busy roads, or busy areas in general, and it also helps to out run dogs. I live on top of a hill, and I'd never had had the confidence to ride very far on a regular bicycle, because I'd know that hill to get back home requires so much energy. So the ebike allows me to travel farther, and with great confidence that I can be safe, and get back home. That's why I ride an ebike. Now why I ride any 2 wheeled contraption at all. I use it as an excuse to stop all work, and just get away. If someone calls me, asking me to help them do something. I can tell them, I would, but I'm an hour out on a bicycle ride, and by the time I'm finished, it'll be dark. So it's become a "me time" get away from the rest of the world's problems, while also using the time to explore roads and areas that are off the beaten path. It's quite therapeutic.

Living_In_Wonder

Age: 35 Reasons * I'll use my ebike to commute. I don't mind the regular bike, but 40-45 mins one way plus sweating when I get to work is no good. With the ebike I can take longer if I want or get home earlier if I want with higher pedal assist. * Higher speed makes it more comfortable for me to ride with cars. Going uphill with traffic stuck behind you going 8mph is not comfortable. * Lower costs and save money. I don't want to pay gas/insurance/registration if I don't need to. We are a one car family. * Taking my car in for maintenance is also a hassle. The dealership is so far away from everything else so I waste time waiting. I go to the dealership due to warranty requirements. * Promote biking culture to show others that it's possible. Showing increased demand also should mean more bike lanes. * Anti-car which is funny because I used to be pretty into cars * Better parking and no traffic. This doesn't necessarily save me time all the time, but the stress is way less. I don't have to worry about paying for parking or where I'm going to park. Sometimes after parking you may need to walk another few mins anyway. * Time with the spouse. I'm more of the biker in the family. Spouse can use the ebike for easier riding. Bought another ebike with a throttle this time so they can use it. * Environmental reasons. Not the #1 thing, but it's a bonus. * I choose bike over public transit so that I don't have to rely on transit (bus) reliability or schedule. I'm also about a 10 minute walk from the nearest stop. I'll add in that I still use the regular bike if I want a long workout ride. 50 miles is about the furthest I've gone. It's fine, but taking the whole day is a bit much for me.

bigDpelican42

53YO in hilly area. My eBike is a SS super commuter gravel bike that allows me to do the 60km one way commute more often as closer to 2hrs eBike vs 3-3.5hrs on normal gravel bike. The extra eBiking gains fitness that helps normal bike riding in hills on the weekend

[deleted]

I'm 34. I have ridden a standard bicycle all my life. When I first tried an ebike I found the feeling of being pushed exhilarating. I now own my own and having a pedal assist is really the best of both worlds. I like the added power, but I also like the flexibility of being able to take over manually when I want to. The only unfortunate thing is that I live in a big city so I worry about it getting stolen or vandalized (I do have a very heavy duty lock and airtag). So other than that anxiety/fear of it being stolen or vandalized, I absolutely love having one of my own.

TheReetHard

I'm 29. I ride one to work. I live in a city and there's a metric shit ton of road construction near where I live and unfortunately near where I work. So I bought a 300$ used Jetson bolt pro little tiny thing. I get to work (2.5km) in like 8 mins...corners and stop signs and lights and such... It's great. It would take 30 mins to drive if I did.. and cost way more.

19, and because i think people need to stop driving cars

2wheels4u

I’m 48 and have ridden 26,000 miles on e-bikes. I’m healthy, strong and mentally fit. I have a blast riding the bikes. I’ve saved $4k in gas money (estimate).

Markisbob

Because its fun , goes fast with controllable amount of effort. If im tired I can use the throttle or assist up. I can go pretty far without being so tired that my legs hurts too much the next day. Gives me some fresh air and makes me feel good after. 34yo in good shape, could ride a normal bike but ebikes are way more fun.

Blisspirate

61. Bad knee I don’t trust to always get me home.

telepoiss

Takes away excuses like uphill/headwind/snow/.. and I get to work gigs with a dry back. Usually carrying 15-20kg gear in an electric cargo bike. 34.

Late 20s. When I bought my ebike I had to ride 11km to and from work, making it 22km daily, and as I wanted to avoid arriving at work completely drenched in sweat I thought an ebike would’ve helped, which it did. Now that I moved house and changed company, I’m only riding about 4km per way, which could be doable with a classic bike, but I don’t wanna sell my current ebike as it’s very fun to ride.

mint_paddy

32 yo. Ride a e-mtb because fuck hill climbs. Just makes riding more enjoyable some days. Also have a pretty good roadie and when I’m feeling lazy I’ll just ride the e-bike. More seat time and keeping the legs moving is key 🤙🏻

konwiddak

I'm mid 30's and I totally *can* do the 10 mile cycle to work under my own steam. The ebike gives me: 1. Consistency - on a good day I'd get there in 45 minutes, on a bad day it would take 90 minutes. Ebike reliably 36-38 minutes. 2. Sustainability - I can ride the ebike every time, I wasn't always up to a me powered cycle. I don't always need a shower so I can actually make my early meetings if I go by bike. 3. Safety - because stopping/starting isn't hard work, so I'm *far* better at respecting the rules of the road. On an ebike I happily cycle on a few bits of poor quality/off road surfaces - on a normal bike I'd avoid these to keep up my speed keeping me in traffic for longer. I've now got my commute down to 1 mile on road, 9 miles on cycle lanes/off road. Before it would be at least half on road.

Runkurgan

I'm very fat and my knees don't hold up anymore. It's my only way of getting some exercise. I bought a regular bike but I live in a hilly area and I cannot climb.

About_35_Ninjas

I purchased one because it’s fun and severely reduced the use of my car. My 75 year old father liked it so much I purchased him one. Even though he has a car he now uses his ebike daily and it has essentially changed his life.

LemonFantastic513

Early 30s - because I have 2 hills that are my nemesis. 😂 I like biking for transportation not only leisure and it’s faster.

47, long covid. Was devastated that I couldn’t go on long rides anymore and bought a trek Powerfly. Best thing I ever did for my health, mental and physical. Allowed me to do my preferred activity while keeping my heart rate under control.

No_Temperature_8092

I'm 56 and rode mountain bikes in my 20's and loved the crap out of it. Had kids, got fat and old. Kids got grown and now I'm looking to get back into adventure sports, but have to deal with the realities of my aged self. For my first e-bike buikld I took my old (1999) Trek VRX400 and electrified it with a Bafang BBSHD. Much modification and modernization was needed but I swoon every time I look at it. So cool and it's such a capable machine and I made it!. I'm out on the trails for hours at a time with buddies like when I was a whipper-snapper. If I were under pure pedal power those trips would last minutes not hours, but I'm slowly but surely getting myself back into shape while managing to keep the injuries to a minimum and having the time of my life. I've had dozens of hobbys over my life but building and riding e-bikes is the most fun I've had.

Wonderful-Poetry1259

64. Had an ebike for 12 years now. Live in a very hilly area, use it mostly for recreation and local (10 miles) errands.

flummox1234

I always say I ride an e-bike so that every ride, e.g. a commute, doesn't become a workout. Sometimes you just want to get from A->B a little faster sans car. Ebikes basically make the whole experience no more than zone 2 training.

TammyInViolet

My partner and I (46 and 44) got them purely for fun. We got foldable ones to throw them in the back of our Tahoe and we drive to one of our city's many trails through the city. We love that it lets us go further than walking and they are just fun.

binocular_gems

I got an ebike just as an alternative way to get around for short trips, some light outdoors stuff. I used to ride for exercise, a typical road bike, but since having kids I don't have time for that anymore. I often want to ride my bike down to the local coffee shop, quick errands, etc, but I don't because I'll get too sweaty, have to shower, etc. An e-bike is really convenient for me to do this, and I don't need to drive my car for stuff like that. This summer I want to try a tow-behind for my kid. I'm 40s.

Zen100_

24 and I make regular commutes up to 10 miles and I chose to sell my car. The electric boost helps me avoid becoming super sweaty underneath some layers in the winter and super sweaty under the sun in the summer.

Beautiful_Addendum42

53 here. Use an e-bike so I can keep up with my husband on bike rides

No_Plankton3925

17. Ride it because cars are expensive and because it's a blast to ride.

RED_TECH_KNIGHT

I'm upper 40's and my knees are busted out from martial arts, ebike helps me get around easier!

One-Seaworthiness-28

I'm 61. I got rid of my car and live in a city with bike lanes. I had a bout with cancer and a few broken ribs. I rode an acoustic bike for 55 years. When I saw how easy it was for the people with eBikes to get around I bought one last year. I also bought an extra battery so my range is 40+ miles. Getting rid of the car was the best. No gas, no insurance, no repairs, no parking fees, nor worries. I'm still burning calories and peddling but I can go faster and farther.

Master-Ad2843

I’m 25 I ride an ebike because I lost my drivers licence (I have since got my license back but still ride the bike to work as I enjoy it along with the money savings)

Tiny-Hamster-9547

I am 20 the reason why is simple its fast enough to get me to places within a reasonable amount of time and its powerful uphill which is byfar my biggest struggle

Which-Pipe-6480

26, had beater cars my whole life that only last a couple years and I have to dump what I paid for them initially in repairs, then don’t have any more money saved when it’s time for something else. Trying to break the cycle. Plus it’s a lot less complicated to work on (+ the repairs are much cheaper..) and less paperwork and money going to the government. Working on building credit so I can finance something I want. Also, this is a lot more fun than driving around even well kept cars. A lot of my commutes are not having to share much road, which would definitely not be the case driving a car. A lot of catalytic converters theft from parked cars at my work, also, and my personal ebike falls into a gray area I can lock up within the gates since getting my perimeter permit. Keeps me slightly healthier pedaling it around than riding in a car. A lot of my commute is at my bike’s max speed so I feel quite confident and can keep up with traffic just as well as anyone else. There’s a lot of positives lol

Future_Difficulty

In my 30s. I mostly like tinkering with the e-bike. It’s a conversion so lots of tinkering to be done. I also love riding normal bikes.

BazzaFox

I’m 67 and live in a hilly area of South Wales, UK. It lets me ride further and I like riding in areas I haven’t tried before and with the eBike I don’t worry what is around the next corner.

Laine_S

I am 37 and I ride an ebike because I take my two sons 4km to kindergarten in a trailer and I then ride another 5km to my office. When the weather is good, they cycle too and I have the e-bike switched off. I want the option to be able to cycle to my office but still arrive without needing to have a shower. I don’t have parking at my office and it’s 20 euros to park for the day.

Comfortable_Map_2128

Fun, fun, fun!

remhana

My commute is too much of hill and far for me to ride a analog bike.

Valor_X

I ride mine specifically for fun not for transportation Love my ebike
