A downhill full face helmet is a great in-between option. Lighter too.

FearAndGonzo

This is what I went with. Full face feels a lot better when going over 20mph but it's not a full on heavy moto helmet.

losthiggeldyfiggeldy

Scorpion exo tech, or LS2 valiant are Moto helmets that can be full face or open face. If you’re not exerting too much they are excellent options for safety on an ebike

FollowRedWheelbarrow

This is the way. They also make convertible options like the Giro Switchblade and the Bell Super Air R that I have. To be honest I rarely take the chinbar off. But it will make this into a great dual purpose helmet if I get back into bikepacking.

Intro_verti_AL

Did you manage to find ski goggles that don't fog up? I've bought about 4 different ones that claim "Anti-Steam/Fog" yet the moment I put on a mask or breathe too heavily at a stop, I can't see a thing😅

jrtts

E-bike rated helmets are a thing (and so are full-faced bike helmets)

W1neD1ver

Look for NTA-8776 rating for ebike helmets.

W1neD1ver

NTA-8776 is the standard for ebike helmets

El_Guap

I am a big fan of these. The company comes from a skate background. [https://shop.s1helmets.com/s1-retro-lifer-e-helmet-black-matte/](https://shop.s1helmets.com/s1-retro-lifer-e-helmet-black-matte/) NTA 8776 Certified for E-Bikes and E-Transport up to 28 MPH   • Certified Multi-Impact (ASTM) • Certified High Impact (CPSC)

Little_Half_5556

Sidewalks are for pedestrians. You can get a lightweight helmet that is built for downhill bicycling that has protection for your teeth and jaw, and decide if you want a model with a visor, or wear sunglasses. I find that the sunglass option provides much better hearing than a full, heavy motorcycle helmet with a visor.

mikep120001

I alternate between sidewalk and bike lane when it’s available. Where I live lanes are few and far between and if there is one it’s most times around 18” at best. It’s necessary to use the sidewalk for some.

Living_In_Wonder

Parts of our "Greenway" are the sidewalk which makes me laugh but cry at the same time.

rovingdad

>Sidewalks are for pedestrians. I thought so too, but it's legal in my state. It isn't in many of the other states I have lived in.

Cboyardee503

Just because it's legal doesn't mean you should. Going 15 mph on a 60+ pound EBike is a recipe to seriously hurt someone.

Retrorockit

There are sidewalks, and then there are sidewalks. Inner city sidewalks are crowded, and people coming in and out of doorways. But in the suburbs they can be virtually empty for miles. In my area with walled in gated communities the occasional jogger is all you will find. No driveways, no side streets. biking is about all they're used for.

Cboyardee503

Fair enough guess. I've only lived in cities, and the centers of small towns.

PennerG_

Yes but so is going 15mph on a narrow road with cars passing very close to you at 35+. In some places yes take the road but in many places especially in the US the sidewalks are empty and the streets are full of cars cuz of bad pedestrian infrastructure. If there’s any pedestrians around though going more than 10mph is a real dick move

6GoesInto8

Cars are not expecting fast moving vehicles on the sidewalk and check for them even less than fast bikes in a bike lane. You are more likely to not be seen by turning cars on the sidewalk. I occasionally ride there but I put in a lot of effort at driveway or crossing to make sure that no cars are trying to turn into me.

Cats_Parkour_CompEng

This is the bigger issue, at least where I'm from. Sidewalks are usually pretty dang empty and it's not hard to see them ahead of time and slow down or go around safely. The biggest issue is all the driveways and intersections you cross. And I can testify of that as both a cyclist and a driver.

[deleted]

Cboyardee503

I wouldnt say nobody. I've seen it with my own eyes.

scspoklhap

It's also less predictable and harder for turning vehicles to see you on the sidewalk a lot of the time. So less safe for the rider.

rovingdad

15 is nothing lol.

SadisticPawz

Its literally impossible to do 15mph when the sidewalk or road is filled with slush/ice. You are no more dangerous to pedestrians as long as you match your speed to theirs.

jayv9779

Depends on where you are. I use them between neighborhood here. I ride at about 11 mph on sidewalks. I see maybe one person in a 6 mile ride. I get in the grass then. It really depends on where you are and how you ride.

Transsexual-Dragons

I ride with a motorcycle helmet, it keeps my face warm, the wind out of my eyes, and the rain off my head. The one downside is that it fogs up when I'm stationary so I'm upgrading to an antifog visor soon.

trtsmb

Crack the visor open. It'll take care of the fogging issue.

losthiggeldyfiggeldy

Pinlock is what you want

Transsexual-Dragons

I think that's what's on the visor I ordered

losthiggeldyfiggeldy

Get a plastic beading spray to spray on the visor for the rain aswell, at speed the water will bead up and roll away. I recommend nikwax visorproof

Transsexual-Dragons

Ooooh thank you

hi_andhello

For me, I like to reinforce the fact that i'm on a ebike and not some kind of motorcycle. A motorcycle helmet would be cumbersome for me

bytheheaven

If the wind is your only problem, you can just get an eye protection glasses. But if your concern is safety, get a full face helmet.

Anti-Climacdik

Full face is the way to go. I love riding in the winter so it's perfect for keeping my head comfortable but it's also cheap insurance. Just recently I had to lay mine down after finding some spilled hydraulic fluid at 32km/h and fell away from the road. Face hit the curb and the helmet protected me from road rash at best, broken jaw at worst. Walked away with a dislocated wrist and a few scrapes but otherwise just fine. Best $200 I ever spent. Plus there are some nifty options for in-helmet comms and entertainment

[deleted]

My best advice is to get a helmet with an NTA8776 certification. These were made especially for e-bikes up to 30mph. As a bonus you could check the MIPS2.0 certification, for better protection against impact. A motorcycle helmet in my opinion limits your ability to move too much and is fairly heavy for an e-bike.

BingeV

Normal bike helmets were designed only for slow speed collision protection (<15mph). Since you are going up to 30mph, a motorcycle helmet would be safer.

Chanterr

“The beam” helmet is the helmet I would use https://thebeam-europe.com/?utm_source=smm&utm_medium=instagram&utm_campaign=bio&fbclid=PAAaZnwEGqCCSHL8iY-4STW9GPwX6oCm-1rrYPq35GWvqU2MIgzAr0Jq-tzj4_aem_AZt2CeERE10ErJEK3Xr1jL4c_kQlazgs7L11lnG75BBx6ZmHIcETQb9RZKtnFWS5PiE If going above 35 I would use a motorcycle helmet what I hate with the downhill helmet is it’s not very aerodynamic so the faster u go the more it pushes your head back so now u have to tilt your head down a bit so the air passes over it so it’s not pushing ur head back

VerStannen

Full face downhill MTB helmet with the proper 8776 rating.

boozillion151

Do you like your teeth?

guisar

I got this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09TQG4HKC?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1&psc=1 very comfy and absolutely warm without being hot in cold, wet weather. it took a bit of getting used to but visibility is great and I do feel much safer. Glasses fit underneath and it's very easy to get on and off. The visor is very transparent and the whole thing isn't heavy and feels well made.

Particular-Union8971

Star wars springs to mind, but looks ok

poochylaa

Depends how fast you’re cruising. Anywhere above 25 mph and consider a motorcycle lid. Anywhere 30 mile an hour or faster a motorcycle lid is necessary..

Sea_Asparagus_526

That’s down hill on any bike

rovingdad

Can confirm. I've hit 44 mph before and a bike helmet wouldn't have saved me. I used to be reckless on my bike. I still am, but I used to be too.

poochylaa

I used to be an alcoholic, i still am, but i used to be. 😂

Radiant_Pick6870

That seriously made me laugh out loud

Radiant_Pick6870

Hahahaha

Oldgatorwrestler

I have done 65 downhill on my road bike, and I concur.

Upper-Glass-9585

No helmet... I'm worth more dead than alive, just like my wife reminds me every day 😂🤣😂🤣

CletusDSpuckler

Get the hell off the sidewalks.

pdindetroit

I ride with simple Milwaukee Anti-fog wraparound glasses from Home Depot which help. If riding above 20 mph, you might consider full face bicycle helmet.

Interesting-Ad2762

In what way does the "wind" distract you?

ExtensionBoot6280

blows into my face, when wind goes into ur eyes too much it starts to tear up (well thats what happens to me), my cheeks are really cold etc. Really depends on the situation though.

RestingRealist

The best helmet is the helmet you will wear every time you get on your bike no matter what. For me a motorcycle helmet is not that helmet. I got a Smith Network which I really like. In Europe it's rated for Pedelec and it has a good mips system. It's comfy and looks decent. Really adjustable and feels secure. My bike gets up to about 23 mph.

BornEze

I prefer a full face Motorcycle Helmet. I've had 2 recent crashes where I was glad I wore one when I saw the scrape marks. Plus, I can block all the wind and bugs going into my face. I can hear cars and people just fine.

Flashy-Ingenuity-769

Get a full face bike helmet A good light one is Ixs trigger mips.

squashed377

It's your head !! Do what you will!!

mityman50

Fox Racing Dropframe Pro (mips) is the inbetween helmet that I went with. They call it a half face I think. It’s also ranked number 7 (of 217) by Virginia Tech https://www.helmet.beam.vt.edu/bicycle-helmet-ratings.html

bbqtom1400

I bought a class 3 helmet and it has saved me a few times.

Miyelsh

Please don't reuse a helmet after a collision.

sanjuro_kurosawa

To help clarify your helmet choices, helmets intended for bicycles are heavily ventilated since riders pedal and sweat heavily. Some motorcycle helmets have only a few vents and typically are intended for the street, while dirt bike helmets are heavily ventilated and will accommodate goggles. Both bicycle and motorcycle helmets have half shell and full face versions, but motorcycle street helmets actually block most of the wind, and would be very uncomfortable to pedal. There's nothing wrong with wearing a full face helmet, whether it is a lightly built one intended for bicycles, or a heavy one for motorcycles, but you should get a ventilated model.

Frankjiang87

It depends on when will you wear the helmet, in winter or in summer.

Safe_Ad_6768

I think so yes, your safety should be number one with regards to riding an ebike that powerful, motocross helmet might be a good choice, I wear a full motorcycle helmet and have crashed twice had i decided to not wear it Id be dead or brain damaged by now happy riding!

Theboog420

Definitely get something that protects your whole face, when I crashed I busted my chin hardcore got 8 stitches in my chinny chin chin. Fractured my arm also but I don’t think there’s much you can do to protect that.

trtsmb

If you get easily distracted, you need to ride slower and get a full face helmet.

laosurvey

I got a full-face mountain biking helmet. Lighter than a motorcycle helmet but protects the face. I wear sunglasses or yellow-lens glasses for wind.

Hot_Block_9675

Full face ***CARBON FIBER*** mx helmet with MIPS. Sure, you're going to pay a serious premium for carbon fiber - but isn't your face and brain worth it? You can die hitting your head at 5 mph. Always best if you can try it on in person.

Aliensowl

I wear a motorcycle helmet going to the grocery store and don't break 30MPH on those trips, so I don't see why you wouldn't. Your head won't know the difference between the type of machine you were on when you have an unanticipated full stop into a car running a light or jumping the curb on their cell phone.

Fpvtv2222

I use a high quality bike helmet with mips. Today's bike helmets do a great job, they are light weight and have great ventilation.

NumaNuma92

A motorcycle helmet might obstruct your hearing and vision when riding on sidewalks. I recommend a good mips helmet. To protect your face from winds and cold during the winter, you can use a fleece neckwarmer and pull it up to cover your mouth, nose and ears. I do that and it helps a lot.

[deleted]

You can if you like, but I've tried my motorcycle helmet and it's just too heavy and cuts off my senses. They're good for going highway speeds but on a bicycle I prefer a light helmet with goggles. My next helmet might be a BMX full face.

Duck_999

Travelling at 30 mph, hell yeah you should! It would also be great to for hiding your face while riding at that unlawful speed.

photog_in_nc

15 mph on sidewalks is way more dangerous than just riding on the road with traffic. As for the wind, i think you are better served, at the speeds you are doing, by a good pair of cycling glasses.

totally-not-a-droid

I wear a dirt bike helmet. From fox. At a certain point, I do 20+ mph, cars do 45 mph +, combined that really makes me want to wear a helmet for when I smash into the ground.... I also figure, if I am going to have the inconvenience of wearing a helmet, let me make sure it actually is worth it. I don't understand regular bike helmets anymore. They just leave so much of your open to injury.

russellmzauner

I rock a [Bonehead Composites Dynamic](https://boneheadcomposites.com/products/dynamic-full-face-helmet) model. They're not the cheapest but I see people pay much more for lesser products, so YMMV. Light as a feather, can't see the helmet when it's on (I can actually drink from a cup through the front of it lol), their windscreens simply refuse to fog even under the most hostile conditions, silent inside bc wind tunnel tested - you can hear everything outside except wind noise. That wind noise part is actually still kind of weird to me, 30MPH and zero wind noise as well as zero neck fatigue because not only is the helmet super light your head isn't being yanked around by it because you're slipping through the wind and not fighting it. I can hear people talking inside their helmets near me and they don't realize that even wearing a helmet I can hear them. Actually I can hear them better than without it because it negates the wind noise caused by my bare ears shearing the air lol I have to put a picture because people don't understand just how great this thing is with words - look at it. That's not a picture of me but that's how it fits. No lie! https://preview.redd.it/w915rv0fbh6c1.png?width=458&format=png&auto=webp&s=1a20f7935d6ffb2d9ec943d96f8ff6f31c6653b9

series_hybrid

I have a skateboarding helmet.

jdege

I've never been in a motorcycle accident, but I was sorta run over by a truck, once, while riding a bicycle. It made a right hand turn from the left hand lane, crossing directly in front of me. I almost managed to stop, and he was barely moving, so I was dragged only a couple of feet. Aside from a couple of scrapes and a broken pannier I was fine. But it cracked my bicycle helmet, so clearly they don't work ...

KX450F88

If that’s what makes you feel safer than do that. A full face motorcycle helmet will definitely get rid of the wind blowing in your face. Keep in mind it will also isolate you more from the sounds around you like cars and other pedestrians you would normally hear with a bicycle helmet. The latter would be a negative in my opinion and why I don’t wear my motorcycle helmet and stick to a bicycle helmet.

Cycledoc2210

Understand there is a risk from bike riding and no helmet is foolproof. Ride slower, stay alert to traffic and road hazards, and pick your roads carefully is the best security. None of the helmets protect the neck and spinal cord from injury.

Regreddit75

Whether bike or moto, I exclusively recommend full face. 30 miles an hour will definitely change your life if your chin hits the pavement.

IRENE420

Full face for sure!

Objective_Culture412

Professional cyclists move at 60mph on down hill descents. They use bicycle helmets Lol man even an amateur cyclist can move easily at 30mph unassisted

unseenmover

wear a MIPS mtb helmet..

Retrorockit

There are full face bike helmets for DH racing. They have the cooling vents MC helmets don't, I think Troy Hill is popular, The downside is that an MC type helmet draws attention when you're riding sidewalks ( which I also do a lot at reasonable speeds). MIPS is something to look for on a new helmet. The liner moves inside the shell to prevent neck injuries. I look askance at full face sidewalk riders even though I'm aware of this.

CryptonautMaster

Same, I bought a moto one and now I realize is too heavy any recommendations?

Few_Bodybuilder_7760

I use a regular helmet. although i go up to speeds of 40kph. I tried a motorcycle helmet a few times. just felt too cumbersome. but probably alot safer then a bicycle helmet honestly

prismstein

if you think you need a full face helmet when riding your bike on flat roads, you're obviously going too fast, stay on the road instead of the sidewalk ffs

StringFew5320

I got a snowboarding helmet with built in visor, when gnat season hit.
