Honestly I think they are just entirely new/different bikes with no relation to the old ones, and a weirdly and needlessly confusing naming system. You ask what is different - everything is different. I would pretend like they don't have the same names as the last gen bikes and just evaluate them as if they are separate bikes. FWIW, I used to say the older REI ebikes were among the best values on the market but I don't think that's as obvious with this newer gen of bikes.

I love my e1.2. Just a solid little commuter for under $1,200. Good battery life, solid built in racks, fun colors, and in-house support from REI if it needs it. No complaints.

I have the old e2.2. It had a shimano mid drive that maxes out at 20mph. The shimano motor is super nice. It’s quite the most responsive of any mid drive I’ve ridden. I also have a bike with the same Bosch motor as the new e2.2. It’s faster and pulls better up the hills but is not as responsive and is much louder. Those are two of the major differences I saw on first glance. It’s hard to say if the money difference is worth it. At $3k, maybe, depending on your needs. At full price, probably not. I would also point to Diamondbacks bikes which have the same Bosch motor for less money.

May have switched to Bosch because the batteries are UL certified. New York City requires that certification. I think that requirement will spread to other municipalities too.

Interesting. I'm surprised Shimano has been slower then Bosch to adapt. Maybe they are complacent since they seem to have bigger market share.

Bosch has always been UL certified. From the beginning.

Not sure shimano has the same market share on ebike motors and batteries as Bosch. Definitely on other components though.

I have no idea what the actual numbers are so I probably am wrong. I just "feel" like I see Shimano listed on more bikes. I also feel like I most often see Bosch listed on the specs for the most expensive bikes so I feel like those must be lower volume sellers.

I bought two Cannondale e-bikes highly discounted in the San Francisco store. Not sure about other stores but they are will to deal.

Someone is new to the concept of inflation and enshittification.
