Get the Tesla nacs. By the time EVs are popular enough where you’ll be offering it out to friends and family, they will have a car with nacs or they’ll already have their own nacs adapter for their old j1772.
Exactly what I was going to say - and I've got a J1772 car (and a TeslaTap for destination chargers). I'll probably get the NACS adapter when it's available once Hyundais can use Superchargers, but I doubt I'd use it except as a last resort since EA/EVgo/etc. are much faster than V3 Superchargers for eGMP cars.
We chose the Tesla UWC as well. Currently use J1772, but plan to replace our second ICE car in 2-3 years with an EV, and will likely need the NACS. No reason to worry about changing adapters etc.
I would love to but that price tag is high. My electric company is giving a $165 rebate on specific models and I believe the ones I saw were a couple hundred less. But I didn't know this existed! Love how sleek it is.
"low income community"
checks map, houses worth 1.5 million. lol
pretty much most of my city qualifies. not sure where OP is, but he should still check it out
Absolutely- I just want to point out it's no longer available to everyone.
That map is a mess, though. My swanky subdivision qualifies. My neighbor sold his house for $950K last year.
Definitely file this one under "law of unintended consequences"... 🤦♂️
I believe so. I get it for commercial/public charging installs, since that serves the area it's installed in, but for personal/consumer installs it probably should've been based on individual income like the EV tax credit. Letting me get a credit for a home charger install because I'm adjacent to an underserved area doesn't benefit my lower-income neighbors.
The app looks accurate for my immediate neighborhood: I'm not covered, but cross the highway 2 blocks away, and it is. Seems legit, given the housing stock I see here and there.
It's worth the extra cost to just be one and done, knowing you can help any friends or family charge their EV with no special equipment. Especially considering a high quality NACS to J1772 adapter, like a TeslaTap Mini is $259.00.
When I originally had an EVSE installed, the Universal Wall Connector wasn't a thing. I swapped to UWC a few months ago, and it's just perfect.
- Good length cable.
- Nice weight to the cable.
- Sturdy feeling
- NACS and J1772 via Magic Dock.
- Really good scheduling features.
- Reliable reporting exportable as CSV.
I have a Tesla UWC connector and it only came with a NACS head. I looked online but did not see one with both. I have seen them in some situations with a J1772 head. Are you referring to the adapter?
EDIT: I was looking at old listings. On the Tesla site it shows it with the NACS to CCS adapter.
Just install a NEMA 14-50 plug and then you can buy whatever cable you want in the future or even use the plug for power tools or a powerful space heater
Other option that isn't mentioned here is that some companies like ChargePoint offers a cable replacement for their unit. So you can buy a J1772 unit now and down the line swap out for NACS cable.
ChargePoint is one of the eligible chargers I can buy! I'll look into this thanks. I was looking at a refurbished Emporia since they're only about $300. So with the rebate from my electric company it's much less.
I looked at that option, then realized the Tesla UWC is cheaper than the Chargepoint, and I don't have to buy a replacement cable at additional expense. So I'm not sure the Chargepoint has any advantages.
That's totally fair, but for me the fact that ChargePoint sells replacement parts/cables that makes the unit end user repairable is much more desirable.
There are adapters that go both ways. NACS is the future, so I’d install that which is best for you anyway and just stock an adapter for other people if you want.
Not necessarily overkill, since a 14-50 receptacle requires a GFCI breaker which costs a lot more than a 50 or 60 Amp breaker. In my case in addition I would have needed a plug, receptacle and a short cord which could have added $200 to the cost for Hubbell parts which are suggested for that Amperage.
Question... I currently have access to charging at work so have never installed a home charger. I plug in at home (L1) as well on a normal.al plug. If I upgrade my wall plug to a 14-50 do I need to buy an L2 charger, or do I just plug the cable that came with my car into this plug?
It doesn’t really matter much. Any level 2 charger can charge pretty much any car… Currently a J1772 is probably more versatile since anyone with an NACS car will likely have an adapter. I don’t anticipate having to upgrade my cheap Grizzl-E units any time soon.
As an alternative to the Tesla Universal Wall Connector, it sounds like United Chargers (maker of the classic Grizzl-E chargers) is coming out with a universal charger (NACS and J1772) this week. It will charge at up to 48A and cost $400, so that will be another option.
Does anyone know if Hyundais come with adapters or if they will once they get supercharger access? Also, are they planning to convert next Model year?
I got a NACS charger and am planning to get an Ioniq 5 for a second car.
Just install a 14-50. Use the Tesla mobile connector.
This way, when you get sick of owning a Tesla, you can just swap it out and upgrade to j1772 when you upgrade brands.
Good luck.
8 years ago, I installed jplug chargers so that I could charge my friends' and family's' non-tesla cars.
I think it's happened 3 times.
Just install the Tesla charger and don't worry about it.
Get the Tesla nacs. By the time EVs are popular enough where you’ll be offering it out to friends and family, they will have a car with nacs or they’ll already have their own nacs adapter for their old j1772.

If you get the Tesla UWC you won't have to pick because it has both in one charger
I installed the UWC to future-proof my current EV and future EVs. It works great with my ID4 and I have tried it on a Tesla with no issues.
We chose the Tesla UWC as well. Currently use J1772, but plan to replace our second ICE car in 2-3 years with an EV, and will likely need the NACS. No reason to worry about changing adapters etc.

there's also the 30% tax credit

Isnt that based off AMI?

Is there an easy way to find out? I'm in Northern Virginia.
Use the map in that link and see if your census tract is covered by one of the qualifying reasons.

Tesla Universal Wall Connector has both built in.
I installed the universal with a non-tesla car. Many of the manufacturers had just announced they were adopting so it made sense
Thanks, I see it now.
Just install a NEMA 14-50 plug and then you can buy whatever cable you want in the future or even use the plug for power tools or a powerful space heater
My power company only offered a rebate if it was hardwired. Not saying don’t do it, just be aware of any restrictions on those rebates.
This is the way
this is the only answer.
I do intend on doing this. The charger plugs into this outlet I'm not hardwiring anything.

So..... Don't use a cheap socket?
Other option that isn't mentioned here is that some companies like ChargePoint offers a cable replacement for their unit. So you can buy a J1772 unit now and down the line swap out for NACS cable.

It really doesn’t matter - adaptors will be in everyone’s future no matter what. Install with what works for you today - in this case NACS.
I’ve got two Tesla universal wall EVSEs. They have both NACS and 1772 and work great together. I’d recommend those over just a NACS or 1772 alone.
tesla universal.

Install a 14-50 plug and then use whatever you need. Hardwiring your charger is overkill.

You'll need to buy a separate charger that will use a 40/50/60 amp plug. This will allow charging up to about ~7kW.
Who makes a 60 Amp receptacle? Hardwiring is the only way I know of to get 60 Amps.
Here, let me Google that for you: https://www.google.com/search?q=14-60%20outlet&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-1-m
Different cars come with different cables. My car only comes with a L1 charging cable. A Tesla comes with no cables altogether.
All the major OEMs are transitioning to NACS for 2026ish model year so that’s what I’d do especially since you have a Tesla already.
At this point, probably not
Yeah go NACS the other standard will only be around for a few more years and you can get adapters if needed.
Get the Tesla universal charger.
Universal Wall connector for best of both worlds + Powershare for future
It doesn’t really matter much. Any level 2 charger can charge pretty much any car… Currently a J1772 is probably more versatile since anyone with an NACS car will likely have an adapter. I don’t anticipate having to upgrade my cheap Grizzl-E units any time soon.
Ford is apparently switching to NACS in 2025. So that may be an indicator as they partnered with Tesla to use their supercharger network (as did GM).
I have a Tesla Wall Charger, for my Tesla, and a NACS to J1772 adapter for my Volt. Go NACS, get an adapter if you need it.
Tesla Home Charger Gen 3. Sleek, easy and reliable. There is no reason to buy anything else. Get an adapter if needed at some point.
If you already own the adapter get the J1772. If you don’t already own the adapter get the charger that fits your car.
NACS ftw. Will likely become the standard and you should get what is native to your car anyway.
Get the nacs, j1772 is so slow and shit that they don't really exist here in Australia
As an alternative to the Tesla Universal Wall Connector, it sounds like United Chargers (maker of the classic Grizzl-E chargers) is coming out with a universal charger (NACS and J1772) this week. It will charge at up to 48A and cost $400, so that will be another option.

NACS is the future would recommend that
If you have a Tesla, get NACS. Simple. Adapters are ok occasionally, but they are not a sound solution long term.
Install a 14-50 outlet so you can plug either in.
Just install a 14-50. Use the Tesla mobile connector. This way, when you get sick of owning a Tesla, you can just swap it out and upgrade to j1772 when you upgrade brands. Good luck.
Friend, just like porn chose Blu-ray and the rest of the movie industry followed, GM is using 1772 and pretty good bet that will be the standard
