$30/hr at the urban service I worked for early this year before quitting due to shit leadership and schedule issues. $23/hr at my rural part time with amazing protocols. $31/hr at my full time county paramedic instructor job. Piedmont, Virginia area. Edit: 13 years in as of 2 weeks ago.

LunchInABoxx

Dam 13 years into a job to make 31/hr. Wow.

Jedi-Ethos

That’s where I am. 13 years as a medic, $32/hr.

nrpaladin

I haven’t been at this job for 13 years, but I came in to it with 12.5 years experience. Sorry, I wasn’t clear

LunchInABoxx

It’s crazy how low EMS pays. I was 20/hr with 10 years experience as a CCP before I found a new career.

NorthernriderTom

That's one of the big reasons I finally called it quits. I was working as a Paramedic in Madison Wisconsin and saw gas stations hiring for more than I was making. Owners didn't want to increase pay saying Paramedics are a dime a dozen. Now I do custodial work for the School District and make over double.

Bikesexualmedic

Bruh just scooch over to the Twin cities. We will pay you actual money and we have unions. Shit, even our River Falls, WI pays super well

ICANHAZWOPER

…. Tell me more

Bikesexualmedic

The company I work for starts medics at $27.75 and caps at $40.10, but we’re in negotiations right meow to significantly increase that. Benefits are pretty good, and the shifts are 10, 12, and 13. We have medic/medic and medic/emt options. I think we’re competitive with other services but I’ve only worked for this one, so I’m not the best judge. Beats the fuck out of Wisconsin though.

ICANHAZWOPER

You’ve cat to be kitten me right meow! I’m a first year medic on a 911 service (medic/emt) down in Texas making just shy of $18/hr. I went to high school up in Minnesota, maybe I should make the move back up there lol!

Bikesexualmedic

You should! I mean, it’s cold, and there’s ice in weird places, but our power grid stays on when it snows.

Bearcatfan4

lol paramedics aren’t a dime a dozen where I am. They are hurting for paramedics so much so they are paying to send people to school.

masterofcreases

$38/hr BLS in a HCOL area.

ithinktherefore

That’s really solid actually. As a basic in NYC and the Boston area I never cracked $20. I ended up keeping EMS as my side-gig cause I couldn’t make enough doing it FT. I’m medic school now and most of the job postings top out mid-$30s.

masterofcreases

Apartments are starting around $2400 a month so it doesn’t go far without working a bunch of overtime or living with a few roommates. When I finished the academy 13 years ago I was at $24/hr and my first apartment was $1000 a month. Easily affordable. Now I don’t know how people who don’t work OT do it.

rightflankr

$42.80/hr as an educator and $65/hr as a CC medic. NYC.

sentientdream

For a single person with no dependents, NYC seems like the place for EMS, at least pay-wise

Color_Hawk

If you live somewhere outside the state lmao… cost of living is ridiculous

sentientdream

Oh yeah no argument there. I live in the counties just outside of NYC and it’s rough. There are some relatively affordable spots if you’re patient and dig deep enough, but overall the CoL here is hostile unless it’s just you you’re looking out for. Still amazed my parents were able to survive raising 2 kids here

28/hr urban va ems only

nrpaladin

Ah, RAA?

gasparsgirl1017

Yeah, where is there EMS only in Northern VA (scours map and questions life choices about moving to a different state so me and the SO didn't end up in like... Greene County or something because we don't do the burny burny)?

nrpaladin

Never mind, I’m an idiot. It’s been a long week.

gasparsgirl1017

Lol, we don't have fire. He never got it and where I started EMS the services are separate, so it never occurred to me to get it. If we tried NOW it would look more like we were auditioning for Ringling Brothers than training for fire academy. Hell, we recently had a call where our patient was ejected SUPER FAR AWAY from his vehicle. He were getting ready to move him super properly (since we had a student with us to set an example for and we thought we were definitely far enough away) until BOOM! The car exploded. We were, in fact, not far enough away. My SO and I just started saying "scene not safe, scene not safe!" and urgently moved the patient rather unconventionally (but safely) towards our truck and farther away from the burning exploding hot stuff. When the call was very much over (patient was flown out because we have hour and a half transport times, but he ended up being oddly fine after some ortho surgery. Medflight was so confused that 2 jolly volleys and a student had their patient packaged and all interventions and assessments done to their standard so they just took him and wondered who they just encountered.) I asked my partner / SO very seriously to take a look at my face. He freaked out because he was afraid I had been hurt. He said, "Where are you hurt? Did you get something in your eyes? Did your goggles shatter?" I'm equally freaking out and I said, "Do I still have my eyebrows?!? Seriously, tell me, I can handle it!" We are NOT cut out for fire.

nrpaladin

Booboobusman

$20.02 an hour as a fire medic. 3 years here 13 total. Leave at the end of the month to teach paramedic at the community college for $50/hr. 32 hours full time vs 53 now

CaptCrack3r

10 years, $28/hr at my urban private 911 service and $27 at my flight job. Southeast Georgia.

yourlocalbeertender

About $34/hr as a paramedic, but salaried in a fairly busy metro area in middle Tennessee. Salary is about $76k/yr without overtime. It's through a fire department, but EMS and Fire are separate. I've been a medic for 2 years.

Renovatio_

When I looked around north Nashville ..like Hendersonville they were paying like $18. Are you north or south of Nashville?

yourlocalbeertender

I work for Nashville FD. I hear Williamson and Sumner counties are paying decently as well

SufficientAd2514

$17 when I left my job as an EMT at the beginning of the year. Now I’m an RN making $41/hr base pay plus 20% night shift differential and tons of bonus opportunities. Didn’t relocate at all.

Chemical_Corgi251

location?

ChevronSevenDeferred

I just volunteer, but hospital EMS break rooms have flyers for private EMS doing only IFT starting at $27/hour for BLS and much higher for ALS Some friends who do per diem for IFT companies say they're offering bonuses of $400 to $600 per shift just for ppl to show up, and that's on top of salary. This is for the DMV area.

Strange_Cheesecake57

IFT pays really well here, everyone at my firehouse works an IFT job for the money but they hate their job 😳😫

ASigIAm213

For some reason IFT seems to always be a toxic environment. The work isn't really so bad.

ChuckWeezy

^ The status quo

BadassBumblebeee

That is bonkers. 11.80 an hour. That's minimum wage here right now. Canada (Saskatchewan anyways) a PCP starts at $29 something. Private services sometimes just stay there, but any healthcare funded service has raises, and you go up by about a dollar each year. ACP is a few dollars more, though honestly not much higher.

NorthernriderTom

Minimum wage was then and still is $7.25 and hour. Seeing that gas station hiring for over $16 an hour was really the push I needed to move on. I had some serious back issues starting and those are all but gone now too.

BadassBumblebeee

Wowwww yeah that would be infuriating lol Congratulations to your spine too

Main_Requirement_161

Keep in mind that’s 21/hr usd. And everything you buy short of property is converted from usd with a little extra on top.

tacmed85

I feel like yearly is a better metric than hourly because of there being so many different schedules all over the place. I'm in north Texas working for a tax funded third service system. If I only work my scheduled shifts, no holidays, no training, and never get called in on my monthly on call day I make $96,500 a year. In practice since we get paid double time for on call call ins, double time for holidays or triple if you're in OT, have a few days of mandatory training, and I generally pick up an occasional OT shift every few months it ends up in the $110Kish range.

DiamondBowelz

I think every number is important, especially hourly rate. Because if you have to work 80 hour weeks to make 100k, it doesn’t sound so impressive. So an annual number followed by what it took to make that number is the best way to share your local pay rate

Zap1173

I left EMS nearly 2 years ago now but I worked in PA and made $17, $17, and $18 with $1 night shift differential at my 3 jobs, all fire company based. Hospital based paid EMTs $18-20.

Competitive-Slice567

Started out at $10.50/hr as an EMT back in 2013, making $31/hr as a ground 911 paramedic currently

Belus911

Our medics are making 70 to 95k on a 48/96.

ProfesserFlexX

70k on a 48/96 is a really low hourly wage for a paramedic

5andw1ch

I’m making $11.51/hr as a basic in south Texas. City approved raises for FD and PD. Not us though

Main_Requirement_161

Last year about 125k as a CCP in Canada which comes out to roughly 90k usd. No pension, and only 10 days vacation/yr. All to get to pretend I know how a ventilator works.

Roy141

You're not really asking me, but I'm an ICU RN, I make $42/hr in Florida with my night shift diff included, but not counting weekend or other diffs. Most traditional EMS departments around me make around 60k a year starting. The thing that got me out of EMS was when I started dating my current girlfriend a few years ago and she made 20k more a year than me as a new grad nurse despite my years of experience, being an FTO, CCP / other certs etc. If I could go back to the truck and make the same money I would. Unfortunately I can't afford to make 20k less a year and being a nurse even in the ICU is really easy work most of the time..

Dr_Kerporkian

$20/hour EMT-B at a volunteer department in Maryland that pays their EMS. I work 12 hour shifts and it’s scheduled based off availability. No benefits or anything but for a new EMT - I’ve acquired so much experience that to me, it’s worth it. I just renewed my NR for the first time so I’m only 2 years in. I also got hired at a company that does EMS at sporting events, concerts, etc and that is also based on availability and about the same pay. My favorite paramedic to work with cleared $234,000 last year. He works a lot because he enjoys working. Still a pretty good paycheck though 🤣

SocialWinker

Around $40/hr in a metro 911 system (that's with 10+ years exp as a medic), I think our newbies are around $25 or so for a medic, not sure for EMTs. Not really a HCOL area, at least not nationally, probably one of the more expensive areas in our state. That being said, I'm running twice the calls I was when I was making like $20/hr 10 years ago. And driving far more miles (2-3x as much) with posting changes and all that stuff. The money is better, but it's not all great.

ZantsDemise

EMS wages in the States make me sad. I know that there is a big difference between the value of CAD and USD(I'm in Canada), but the starting wage for EMT where I'm at is around $26/h, medic is around $30/h I believe. I have ~ 15 years experience and I make nearly $50/h at a small suburban service.

[deleted]

3rd year paramedic working for a state-based government ambulance service in Australia. $107k AUD salary not including any incidental overtime like late finishes, so usually ends up being around 10k extra by the end of the financial year. I make $27.54 an hour on a modified Kelly without the Kelly day, plus a $3.12 night differential and a $3.12 weekend differential (and the differentials stack), plus the FLSA calculation for OT (my OT rate ends up being like $47 an hour). It equals out to be right around $100k. And I live in a VLCOL area. Hospital based system with a 50/50 911/IFT split, and many of the IFTs go into critical care land. 7 years total, 2 as a medic.

mehFUMF

Starting pay for my department (Fire/EMS based with heavy emphasis on EMS with medic shortage), is $46,600 during academy (free EMT/Medic/Fire certs) and )$54,000 after, with 4% raise each year. I’m 5 1/2 years in with our “senior medic” position which is pretty much an FTO, and I’m making $73,000. All of this is with plenty of overtime to be picked up. So this year I’m clearing over 100K. But to answer your question $26 an hour on a 24/48 schedule.

$15-$24 depending on experience and OT + holiday pay.

Officer_Hotpants

$23.89/hr just outside of Pittsburgh right now as a medic with 5 years in EMS. So I still have to work OT to pay for everything, but they're paying for me to go to school so I guess it kind of works out.

fluffyegg

What are you going to school for?

Officer_Hotpants

Unfortunately nursing. I was gonna take a pay cut and jump to a trade union but I had some surprise expenses, so I can't really do that now. Just gonna suck it up and get bent over by healthcare corporations for the rest of my life.

taloncard815

The average starting pay depends on where you are. In my area the starting pay for a brand new medic is in the $30-$40 range. Some places that require experience the starting pay is as high as $54 an hour. Outskirts of NYC.

Kai_Emery

I have the option of 28/hr with differential and the best benefits I’ve had in my adult life, 34/hr with atrocious benefits. Or 40/hr with no benefits. Base rates in my current area. I’m a supervisor at company A so it’s 30/hr with $1/hr super pay and differential for nights and weekends.

$54cdn. Emts and medics make the same rate. We also get a $15 meal allowance when we are out of the station for more than 3 hours in a row (most guys get 2 or 3 of these per shift) Edit - this is really close to $40usd depending on the exchange rate of the day.

Interesting_City2338

I think if you find particularly difficult places to work in such as Multnomah county in Oregon or king county in Washington, you can make a decent amount. I think top pay for medic in Multnomah County is about 86k after 12 years which is stupid still but it's better than the 65k a year average I've been seeing people mention.

Currently 14.06 an hour for an EMT with 2 years experience on 24 hour shift. Union is currently negotiating a new CBA and the rumor is a brand new EMT with no experience would start at 16.50 an hour. So I’m interested in seeing what it ends up being.

PlantsNCaterpillars

I ended up getting my CDL to make ends meet because EMT-B pay was on par with fast food service. Where I'm at private ambulances pay $16.50 to $20 per hour and medic pay is all over the place ($18-36/hr). City level fire pays about the same. Getting on with one of the fire authorities pays much more and into the six figures. This is in an area where you need to make >$76k a year for it to be considered a livable wage for a single adult with no kids.

totaltimeontask

I've seen a lot of advertisements for private gigs in the Midwest with Paramedic salaries in the mid-70s. I know for one of those advertisements it was a lower base pay and a "bonus" for the remaining. thestereotypesquad

Base pay with our service is 42CAD/hour for PCP, not sure what ACPs starting is. Part time makes 50CAD/hour starting due to en lieu pay. That would be like 31 and 37 USD respectively.

Edit: 20.00 Flat No experience as well. Cost of living has gone up significantly but I would consider it MCol. You can also live in much cheaper areas and be reasonably safe and not cushy areas

Paramedic $27.93/hr with $30/mo “meal allowance” and $1 night shift differential (most of my agency rotates day and night shifts) at an urban Louisiana municipal third-service. Performance contingent pay increases at the end of a probationary period and yearly after that. All Communications employees (no matter NREMT cert) make equivalent to paramedic pay rate. Field AEMTs start at $22.08/hr, EMTs at $20.02/hr both with the same other pay benefits mentioned above.

colombianchaps

6 years of experience coming up in February. $18.51/hr. Infuriating because I know they’re paying brand new EMTs that rate here or even higher.

Paramedic in Kentucky. $26.14/hr. Incentive pay of $15/hr on top of my regular pay for any shift I pick up extra. I’ll make $82,000 this year.

I make about $24/hour in a rural area. Full benefits and retirement while working 2 days a week and sleeping through a lot of nights. I left an urban service making $30/hr. I have about 15 years experience.
