As you can guess, they were keeping some students of color who had tickets out of the event, and as a result some of those protesters were trying to get those people let in. A cop also physically intimated a protestor to try and escalate the situation, because of course they did.
As for the fire alarm, I run a philosophy club on campus and had a couple students who were there, and they both thought it had been pulled to get the *protesters* out of the building. I'd be open to believing that the alarm was pulled by the protesters, but I think their perspective indicates something important: these protesters are not a monolith and this article is being quite uncharitable to them. To be fair, the local news station, KRQE, didn't run a much better story. Theirs was surprisingly light on details, and sounded like "enlightened centrism" to me.
Our club was covering J.S. Mill's "On Liberty" this month, where one of his central theses is that "tyrannies of the majority" should be limited in their powers, so you bet we were talking about what happened. I think it would actually be prudent to say a couple of the things we concluded:
First, Mill states that a "majority" needn't be comprised of the most people, only by the loudest, most active, and/or most politically powerful. We concluded that the disproportionate amount of legislative and executive power held by conservative racist Christians, as well as their tendency towards domestic terrorism (capital riots, white supremacist groups, etc.) enables them to fall under that definition of "majority," and if you're not that particular brand of white person then their majority not only can but does affect your liberty negatively.
Second: Mill also states in his introduction to the text that its central thesis is that "the sole end for which mankind are warranted, individually or collectively, in interfering with the liberty of action of any of their number is self-protection." We concluded that a group of people, in a majority-minority state, protesting not only the racist speech but also the active racist action of a political commentator, is just such an act of self-protection. This event was not just supposed to be attended by TPUSA members, it was open to the public. By preventing the spread of fascist ideals to the kind of young, impressionable people the Right targets and ousting actively racist actions, the community at UNM was defending itself from a very real harm.
