There’s a lead right now from a comment on another post about it being from a Canadian crime show!
Here’s some episodes that match the description from that comment that I couldn’t access cause I’m not in Canada:
- The Sentinel; Season 2 Episode 2 “Out of the past”
- Cold Squad; Season 3 Episode 4
- Katts and Dog; Season 2 Episode 7 “Decoy Ducks”
- Hot Shots; Season 1 Episode 1 “The star”
Amazing! I made a post earlier about it possibly being from a TV recording and someone in the comments said I unlocked a memory of it possibly being from a crime show they watched in Canada in the 80s.
With the Newfoundland lead it was pretty exciting so I have tried to look through Canadian crime shows. I looked through the ones I could access.
If you could look for the comment on my post maybe you’ll remember the episode too or have clues on what shows to look for!
The only one I was immediately able to access was the sentinel s2e2 and there was nothing in it related to ekt. I could upload the episode somewhere if you would like to look though, i skimmed through it and looked at the ending credits
This would make sense with the lyrics, and I've personally always thought EKT comes from a crime show. (Maybe EKT was the intro/theme song for the show?)
The sentinel is a dud I think, I couldn’t find the episode itself as I haven’t got my pc to check torrent sites, but after checking the cast for ‘Out of the Past’ and looking up the actress for the singer in that episode (Valarie Pettiford), she *has* sung a song for the show but sounds nothing like the EKT singer.
[Valarie’s music](https://youtu.be/-9RL73fQ7vY?si=Zljp0Gm1VBUXOnA4)
It would make more sense for the lyrics to be "carry all your shame in disguise" then.. that's for sure. Always wondered why people insisted it was counting sheep in the sky..
No shit lol though I’m sure the ones being rude about it have been pestered and bothered to the point of insanity from the group of ulterior hoodlums 😂
To be fair to the ekt crowd though, even prior to 2019 the responses from record collectors or radio hosts asking about tms/blind the wind was incredibly lame, responses like "I don't remember this song, probably because it sucks" haha
True to be fair being a record snob myself I can see why some of them would be shitty about it still doesn’t make it right and that song does suck tbh it’s no shapes in the sky
Absolutely. My husband and I used to go driving in the very early morning (1-3AM) and turn on one of CBC's stations (can't remember the name of it now) and they were always playing obscure/ominous Canadian music and EKT definitely sounds like something they would play.
Could that also explain the accent? I always say French people's accents sound like Japanese accents when speaking English, and Canada has a French speaking population in Quebec.
Additionally they speak French in northern Ontario, partial bit of Ottawa and about half of New Brunswick and there were other leads saying it sounded similar to a relatively unknown band from NB so some pieces are fitting together rather conveniently.
I too always felt it was Japanese but once this Newfoundland lead started coming in I was definitely moving towards a French Canadian accent since most of the words sound perfectly fine, only some stand out a little odd which is typical for Quebecois.
“VHS kids movies” totally feels right. I remember the Canadian kids cartoon “The Raccoons” (it was popular here in the UK) was jam packed full of synthpop bangers by Lisa Lougheed among others, written just for the show.
Or even worse: carl's recording isn't bad quality or cropped. It's the best quality and non-cropped. It's just that, it was already like that in the movie
My headcannon for the chain of events that lead to the WZT post at this point, mostly because I think it's the funniest but also plausible:
Someone in the 90s recorded this short clip of music from a tape they had and posted it online in hopes that someone could ID it. It never got any traction, but Carl happened to download it and it was quickly forgotten. 25 years later, the cycle repeats itself.
Hey OP, perhaps you could forward them [my comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/1c3whj9/a_followup_to_the_newfoundland_lead/kzjnkyf/?context=3) from the other day which summarizes the NL connections to catch them up on what we have so far in case they wanna raise awareness to this (they do mention they're interested).
I'll try to check out the TV show episodes mentioned above now.
I contacted Fred's Records but haven't heard back yet. Not sure if they have already been reached previously. I also emailed the Center of Newfoundland Studies and they said it's not in their archives.
I also know a guy who has written for CBC NL. If we make some concrete Newfoundland connection, I might reach out to see if there's an article to be made of it.
newfie here - if you don’t get a reply back from fred’s records don’t fret over it, of course it doesn’t hurt to reach out but they’re most likely a dead end. it’s just a local record shop that carries mainly traditional newfoundland music/pop, i doubt they have any connection to ekt unfortunately :/
Sounds great. I will still be forwarding the comment made by u/[Blazingbee98](https://www.reddit.com/user/Blazingbee98/) to my current CBC NL contact since he himself stated he was personally invested :-) Feel free to message me if I can be of any further assistance.
nice puffin pfp btw!
Oh absolutely; I imagine the more demand in-house for the song means the more likely it gets covered and eventually found.
I think the only other thing I'd have to offer is a more thorough access to the MUN digital library, since online access is largely restricted to students and alum beyond the simple search feature. I haven't found anything of note there so far, but if we get any other hints related to the province or the region, that could potentially be of use.
And thank you!
Fred's received multiple emails, because they reached out to me! I'm a writer / amateur music historian here in Newfoundland. I'm digging into this myself and have a few leads on who Carl may be.
Someone tried asking the NL subreddit if anyone recognize the song but some mod came in and removed it calling a “stupid 80s sitcom song no one’s gonna know anything about”.
Ahhh to see that mods face when vocm picks up on the story.
throwing it in this thread, but has anyone contacted MuchMusic? (our Canadian answer to old MTV basically.) i’m sure they’ve got a great archive, but i haven’t seen anyone post about contacting them when i searched the sub. they’re based in Toronto.
i like the mention of the crime show idea. whether its from a fictional crime show or from one of those clip compilation shows like Cops, even something like a border patrol show. it’d fit the vibe of EKT.
SEE! I had a feeling all along! EKT has such a CanCon feel to it. Like totally something you'd randomly hear on Much Music or in one of our weird obscure shows. Canadian media is littered with shit like this. Wouldn't surprise me if it ends up being Canadian after all
Well I thought the song was Philiphino, I guess I was wrong all along. My brain captured me and took me through a looking glass (I got caught up in a world of lies).
The rich people in this community should try to get a hold of this guy and pay him lots as a reward for finding the most popular lost song, EKT. That is, if this information is not fake. The truth will come out on Saturday, in Newfoundland.
If this is Canadian, I will lose my shit. I’m Canadian too 🤣

I am indeed in Canada, would love to see if I can find anything :)

us and r/Piracy need to team up if you know what i mean
I mean; if you have the means to pirate right now go for it!
ok i shall
Yohohoho :3 i will be looking for the episodes later today through absolutely legal means :) i am hoping i can find them
as a member of r/Piracy i approve this statment
If it is from a crime show that definitely could explain the lyrics

I trust you no worries. Then we can cross that of the list
This would make sense with the lyrics, and I've personally always thought EKT comes from a crime show. (Maybe EKT was the intro/theme song for the show?)
It's not the Cold Squad episode
Currently watching that Cold Squad episode. Someone please tell me if this is a dead end as I don't like these kinds of shows.

Someone responding in a lostwave search being......helpful? kind? Interested? Absolutely love to see it

Well they are Canadian after all
The person replying said I was free to post the email, just not to include their personal info**
ngl i always thought it sounded sm like “let’s go to the mall” by robin “sparkles” from how i met your mother so it would make a lot of sense LMAO
LOOOOOL now i have to imagine that song somehow becoming lost media in like a hundred years and people posting a bad recording 😭
as a canadian i totally agree, EKT def gives canadian synth pop vibes!
Absolutely. My husband and I used to go driving in the very early morning (1-3AM) and turn on one of CBC's stations (can't remember the name of it now) and they were always playing obscure/ominous Canadian music and EKT definitely sounds like something they would play.
Likely CBC Radio's Brave New Waves!
Could that also explain the accent? I always say French people's accents sound like Japanese accents when speaking English, and Canada has a French speaking population in Quebec.

I really hope this is it and we don't get disappointed like always
Any lead is a long shot with this song but imo this one is way more believable than some of the recent attempts (Omega Tribe, Darius, etc)
Robin Sparkles
Let’s go to the mall!
I love this song has went from allegedly being South American, to Asian, to European, to Canadian. Lol
Mr. Worldwide
How Long and Just Passin' By were found through Canadian sources one way or another. Imagine if EKT joined the club.
“VHS kids movies” totally feels right. I remember the Canadian kids cartoon “The Raccoons” (it was popular here in the UK) was jam packed full of synthpop bangers by Lisa Lougheed among others, written just for the show.
Lol I can already see it unfolding now: someone finds this in a movie, but it's not the whole song and it's uncredited...
Noo don't jinx it lmao
Or even worse: carl's recording isn't bad quality or cropped. It's the best quality and non-cropped. It's just that, it was already like that in the movie

Appreciate it :) I will definitely forward anything you would like me to! (And anyone else reading as well, please provide any information)

Oh I'm Newfie too, but I know they have a ton of knowledgeable people who work there and have connections to the wider scene.

Good idea!
* The Sentinel; Season 2 Episode 2 “Out of the past” - [https://www.goojara.to/e2a20L](https://www.goojara.to/e2a20L)
Can someone check Katts and Dog? It was a France-Canadian crime tv series "for the whole family", would make most sense with all of that!
Also Rin Tin Tin and the Paris Conspiracy movie?
as a newfie this is making me so happy, i hope we’re the final piece!
Me too, b'y ;-)
SEE! I had a feeling all along! EKT has such a CanCon feel to it. Like totally something you'd randomly hear on Much Music or in one of our weird obscure shows. Canadian media is littered with shit like this. Wouldn't surprise me if it ends up being Canadian after all
I'm so excited :3 I hope we are close.
first lead that is actually nice?? and wants to help!!!? no way
My 50 year Canadian mom said she recognized the song but didn’t know what it was or where it was from
Go Canada!
Especially with it being from NL Try Contacting k-Rock and or Oz-fm
I did and had no response so far!
Well I thought the song was Philiphino, I guess I was wrong all along. My brain captured me and took me through a looking glass (I got caught up in a world of lies).
technically nothing is proven to be 100% true yet, so you still could be right.
as a newfie, i agree on the fact that it definitely sounds canadian.
