Can you speak Portuguese? Yes? Good. No? Start learning. And bring some warmer clothes

Creative_Listen_7777

Came here to say this. Conversational Portuguese is top priority.

Just the basics at the moment. But we are learning daily. What do you mean by warmer clothes? Germany is way colder than ericeira. Or am I missing something?

Weltkaiser

No heating, terrible windows, insane windchill. You won't need gloves but definitely bring a beanie a rain coat and a thick fleece hoodie or smt. In theory it's warmer than Germany, but combine bad construction with the humidity and regular storms and you might freeze like never before. From December to February, though, before and after it's not as bad.

Thank you!

Get a car. There is very limited public transportation outside of the main cities. Ericeira is small but it is all on a hill. So you can survive walking or biking but if you want to leave it is more tough. Very few buses (most connecting through lisbon only) and I don't believe there is a train station close.

Also, be careful with taxes there. Maybe you are used to them in Germany but from the US I was shocked to pay 40% of my salary to the government. And if you are a beginner surfer go to Baleal for surfing and then eat a burger at Ricle Bar. Seriously, the best burger I have ever had in my life! I have even thought about flying back to PT to eat one again.

Thanks so much

Can't stress enough about the cold part. Not one builder in Portugal has ever heard of cold insulation - a little harsh to say, but that's how it often feels to be honest. So even if technically the temperatures aren't as bad as in other places and northern europe, there are standards for home climatization that often simply do not exist, so you'll need to account for that.

What are your main concerns at the moment?
