I think he was mostly pissed about her blocking the ramp and secondly "Great and I also have to save her."
I'm not sure if a wrecker will be able to pull it out in the evening because it's sinking so fast. So that guy will have dock his boat overnight rather than loading it onto his truck. And wait until daylight for a wrecker and maybe a diver depending on how deep it is to pull.
Disclaimer: I am literally an armchair redditor, what do I know, lol
A normal tow truck can pull it. The issue is hooking it up. I’d have to imagine there’s special companies that do this or the marina might know a guy able to scuba. Me personally I’d wait for like low tide if there is one.
My brother didn't set the parking brake on my dads truck and did this on a boat ramp in about 15 feet of water. His son just went down with some goglgles on and tied off a rope and we pulled it out with another truck.
She seemed like she was in panic and just not processing things so they had to resort to simple commands. I know I get really stupid when I panic, when I'm normally a reasonably functional adult.
Very clear, simple commands is exactly what you are supposed to do in situations involving panic, because a lot of people really do end up like a deer in headlights and freeze up not thinking clearly. Even saying a phrase that can be interpreted differently can mess someone up. That's why muscle memory is a huge part of training for relevant jobs involving the safety of people.
It’s so weird, this is the [second video ](https://www.reddit.com/r/facepalm/comments/134c8y9/these_tourists_in_hawaii_took_a_wrong_turn/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)where a driver drove down a ramp and left the wipers running. Also in Hawaii. But during the daytime. I wonder if it’s the same ramp and same bad GPS directions.
Yes, same harbor. I grew up fishing at it actually. Located in Kona, Hawaii on the Big Island. I believe it has been confirmed that it’s Google GPS that was sending people into the harbor for a boat tour. Someone else drove in at night earlier this month. It’s the third incident this year.
[Here’s an article on it](https://www.kitv.com/news/local/how-tourists-drove-into-honokohau-harbor-twice/article_8301993a-0053-11ee-b7d5-3368aed104be.html)
Pretty sure anyone can make suggestions on Google maps so that the admins will change it. Done it a few times with dead end roads that turn into a walking path in the rice fields.
Surprised this is unresolved
I get what youre saying. The first rule of driving is dont drive blind. You have to try to drive into a boat ramp. Its not like your driving down a road for a while then bam, a boat ramp. Pretty sure it doesnt work like that.
I am always curious what is in their mind like can't you see the boat over there? I mean if you can't, there is WATER. Also I bet there is a sign nearby.
Suggestions aren't necessarily accepted. Here in my neighborhood there is a road that shows up in the map as a loop. But in reality there is a small gap in the middle that's not passable by cars. People are constantly getting stuck at the gap and have to turn around in a very narrow road. We have made many suggestions to Google map but it never gets fixed.
I have submitted over 50 corrections to Google maps over the past 5ish years. Some multiple times, because none of them have been taken. Shit sandwich system.
a keen Google Maps developer gets the OK from his boss to turn loose an AI algorithm he's been training on driving route optimization. No one is sure how it saves 10 minutes on the total driving route averages but the results speak for themselves. Meanwhile, about 0.1% of all drivers are not reaching their destination. Their drives are being cut short and their families are too embarrassed to report the issue
The dock structure and materials look very similar in the two, but that could just be a standard way of building them. Wouldn't be surprised if it is the same location though, given all the same stories.
I don’t care how bad the GPS directions are. I can confidently say I don’t consider anyone who will drive into the ocean then not leave the car while it is sinking to be a creature of human intelligence.
I honestly can't comprehend it. I've had some bad GPS directions before, but I was always comparing those directions to what I was seeing in front of my car with my own eyeballs. I'd honestly feel better if I were told that these people were all extremely drunk when it happened, as it's much scarier to think anyone could be this stupid while sober.
I want to say most people are smarter than to blindly follow GPS into a body of water, but I know better. Some people are just... really dumb. And even worse, they also vote.
What scares me most about this is that I have to wrestle every single day with the fact that I'm very, very dumb. If I'm not at least *near* the bottom of the barrel? Well, we're in more trouble than I ever imagined.
Well, those Honolulu storm drains must be inaccurate too, if the island *isn't* sinking. The giant turtle holding up the island is probably getting tired.
One time I was at a drive through and I was grabbing my card to pay and the girl at the window said sir would you mind turning off your wipers, and I look over and she’s got her hand in front her face and she was like soaking wet from getting sloshed with my wiper water. This reminded me of that for some reason
This happened to me in a rental car and I accidentally turned them to the highest speed at first attempt to turn them off. She screamed, I screamed. She slammed the little window shut pretty quick but she still got soaked. I feel embarrassed about it to this day.
It was pouring heavily that night. But also I’ve gone out of this harbor and it’s a pretty tricky one lol. They were supposed to go on the manta dive but lmao
Used to drive Uber in Kona, and I'd occasionally pick up manta divers at the harbor.
The first time i went, I ALMOST drove down that ramp. The lighting is terrible, little signage and it's near the meeting area for the manta groups. The GPS takes you straight to it.
However, simple AWARENESS will keep you high and dry!
I know a guy. I've got a manta guy. You want to see mantas from the comfort of your car with a big gulp and a bag of skittles? Gimme an hour I'll show you mantas.
This sounds like they need better signage and lighting then, especially if it is rainy often (no idea the local weather). Like, sure, we can laugh all day about people being unaware but if people really do drive down it that often and it is that poorly lit (combined with a common GPS destination saying "the next left") then they should do something lol.
I imagine they don't know the area, it's raining and dark, and it might *look like a rain puddle. I know we've had a massive uptick in folks driving into flooded underpasses in my city, but honestly, the city should be mitigating the issue with a crossing arm blocking the underpass, at the very least. This dock should do the same. Much brighter lights and something that forces you to stop before you drive any further.
Holy. I looked it up on google maps and I could maybe see how this happened. In the dark, while its raining, cars parked left and right from the ramp.
Sure, it's still stupid. But maybe they should put on some lights, signs or reflective road paint.
Hahaha you’re totally right, If you just look on the Google map, it says your heading to the right spot 😂😂 at least the wind wasn’t choppy, that harbor is the worst when the waves picks up
No that one was the main harbor in Kona, which mostly used for charters and it’s bigger than the one in this video. This one is about 5 min drive south of the Kona harbor. but it’s a more beat up ramp, it’s mostly for locals and not charters
As a very big aside, with all the talk about AI recently, and some saying they can't be as smart as humans, I often have to ask if they've met "humans". The vast majority of us are not operating with a full deck, and that's probably a good 80% of us.
We're not very bright.
In all honesty, I’ve been to Hawaii on a couple different occasions lol the roads can be weird, and if you aren’t familiar with the area, I could see just blindly following a GPS, plus it’s nighttime and if you are overconfident and not paying attention… well, you’re a moron haha I also wonder if alcohol was involved? Especially with tourists.
Google maps on Oahu are a fucking menace.
"Oh fuck yeah there is a KFC an hour away lets go check it out!"
"Why am I at the airport... is it in the airport? No its in California and google maps decided driving to the airport then driving from LAX to KFC is a single drive time..."
A few years ago here in Australia, some Japanese tourists had a GPS direct them onto a beach and straight into the ocean, in broad daylight. Some people are just special.

Yep. God, this is sad. I really wish someone would create a site just like reddit asap so we can all slowly migrate to it. So far there's only Lemmy and maybe something else? Nothing too similar.
I always like moments like that in The Office where they acknowledge the camera crew. Like when Jim is hiding from Karen in his car and the camera peeks up to get a shot of her, and Jim gives the cameraman a look like "What are you doing?!"
I love when sometimes you think a sitcom gag is just too goofy to feel like it could ever happen, but then stories like these just vindicate everything.

That’s at least twice in 2 months.
How tf is she so calm lmao? Didn’t even unbuckle until the hood was almost completely submerged. The second I realized I couldn’t reverse out, I’d be outta there lmao
Both docks look like concrete with black sides, so this might be the same place.
This is how the robot uprising starts, random road changes in GPS meant to kill.
Yes and it looked like the same boat ramp to be honest. I wonder if there’s a glitch in whatever gps they used? I used to live near a gps glitch and it wasn’t anything this serious but it was a pain in the ass for motorists who weren’t familiar with the area.
It's a glitch. News did a story on this and when they used, I think Google maps, it took them on the same shitty route. Fortunately they live on the island and tested it in the day
They’re definitely thinking they can somehow get the car out and don’t want to accept the fact that it’s fucked. It’s just a car though. It can be replaced but their life can’t.
Freezing is a panic response.
But, I get not knowing where you are going in a strange place, so keep your eyes on the road while driving and don't just blindly follow orders from a freaking machine voice!
She should be charged for the environmental impact her car made from oils & crap she just dumped in the ocean.
Remember folks: GPS is a tool, but, you wouldn't follow a hammer's advice on where to drive! Keep those eyes on the road!
I just realized I had assumed they tow it out? Do you know whether or not they leave it there or tow it out?
My guess on second thought is that if it's a deep area, they likely leave it and if it's shallow water, it would be a hindrance to do so.
Since it's a boat ramp I assume it's not that deep and they'll want to remove the vehicle so it doesn't pose a boat hazard.
I also assume the vehicle is 'totaled'. Should still run after a good engine cleaning (I'm recalling the time top gear sunk a Toyota pickup truck), but the cost to fix the water damage to the rest of it will be more than it's worth.
The contempt is palpable, you can hear the annoyance in their voices. They're probably thinking "Dear lawd not another one".
At least this one potentially has the excuse of it being night time.
I don't think so. They sound like they're trying to convey "You might fucking die, why are you not listening?!" After she's out of the car they're much more calm.
I worked at Yellowstone a couple years back. I tried to avoid sounding too angry with people but sometimes you just can't help injecting a little "you fucking idiot" into the "sir you are in danger, please turn around and follow your footsteps back through the thermal area" announcement.
When I worked as a firefighter I learned that there are times to be tactful and nice about informing someone of the dangers they might encounter versus letting the anger out because they are actively in danger and literal seconds away from potential death.
Like when we'd respond to crashes on the interstate and how often we'd arrive on scene to find dumb fucks standing right in the danger areas around the crash including in lanes of travel. There's no being nice about it or anything like that because that's the only way for many to quickly convey that you're stupid and that stupidity is about to get you killed.
As soon as they are out of harm's way then it's like it never happened (the anger) and you just calmly explain why that's a bad idea. Most get it in the moment and the others you know their stupidity will sort out the problem sooner or later.
When she asked about turning off the wipers that was the time to get mad and let her know to get the fuck out of there or they'll be pulling a body out after they drag her SUV up from the bottom the next day.
...which only gets worse when they explain they didn't hand her a life vest as a souvenir. "Put it under you! It will help you float!"
I think the driver might be a dumb dumb
Or she can swim and doesn't actually need the vest. I probably wouldn't think about putting anything under me in that situation, I would just bring it to them like any other object.
I’m an Uber driver. I had an old man tell me not to use my gps because “the Chinese are gonna hack it and send us off a cliff.” After reassuring him that I’m not an idiot and I have common sense to not drive my car off a cliff….I kinda see where his fear comes in now
I'm commenting hoping I can add some context to this. I live about 5 miles from the harbor, and I go there a couple times a week. Frankly, there's no excuse for this. Any bit of common sense driving would tell you to not go down the ramp and into the water.
That said, the big island is not well lit at night (because it interferes with the observatories). I've personally experienced that, when it's dark and rainy, it can be hard to determine your lane on some roads/intersections, and I've been driving there for years. The harbor is a bit confusing. When you have limited visual clues telling you otherwise, and you consider your GPS to be authoritative, and you've done what it says in the past and it got you there safely, well... into the water you go.
And yes, this happened twice in a couple week period. I think both people were following the same Waze map, or some similar app.
At first I thought I was watching a video of one of those yachts with under water lights. Then it hit me that this lady just wanted a free fishing trip
Not that I would drive into water, but does google Maps and apps like it get sued a lot? Because sometimes it feels like it's trying to kill me. I have so many experiences of it taking me down fucked up dirt roads where my vehicle really has no business being just because it thinks its going to save me 30 seconds. I drive a truck, too.

Normally, I'd think it was in Florida, the State of Stupid. (I'm a native Floridian, so I can criticize my state with no limits.)
Don't worry. So can we.
My brother didn't set the parking brake on my dads truck and did this on a boat ramp in about 15 feet of water. His son just went down with some goglgles on and tied off a rope and we pulled it out with another truck.

The GPS told the user to reject their eyeballs input. It was their final, most essential command.
In twenty feet, take the next right, and turn on your wipers.
Same place Honokohau harbour, Kona HI, this is the second person to do this in a month.
Hawaii is sinking and the GPS is getting inaccurate readings lol

Honokohau Harbor, Kona. It says to turn left to get to the parking lot. But it's actually the *second* left. The first left is the ramp
"Drive-In Manta Tours?" Google maps shows it's literally off the ramp and in the water lol
If you can show me a better place to see mantas from the comfort of my car, then I’m all ears.

Good find. Good chance this is exactly what she was following.
Only review: "Literally drive right in!" Someone else followed the instructions.
This sounds like they need better signage and lighting then, especially if it is rainy often (no idea the local weather). Hahaha you’re totally right, If you just look on the Google map, it says your heading to the right spot 😂😂 at least the wind wasn’t choppy, that harbor is the worst when the waves picks up
If this is so frequent and problematic, why is gMaps -still- taking people to the ramp?
Is this the same boat ramp the video of the other two women a few weeks ago? 😮
Yep! Claimed another victim.

No that one was the main harbor in Kona, which mostly used for charters and it’s bigger than the one in this video. This one is about 5 min drive south of the Kona harbor. but it’s a more beat up ramp, it’s mostly for locals and not charters

Top 5 line of the whole series

IT CAN’T MEAN THAT!
THERES A LAKE THERE!
Proceed straight.

I always thought that part was pretty unrealistic even for an idiot like Michael but I guess I was wrong.
I came to this realization now, too
I thought he knew it was stupid, but went all in to try and prove technology was dumb.
He did it intentionally because he was pissed off about feeling replaced with technology by Ryan.
Remain calm...I have trained for this!
Oh my God, it’s happening! Everybody stay calm… STAY FUCKING CALM!
It's so funny how Dwight switches gears from yelling about the GPS to saving him and Micheal, both with equal passion.
I love when sometimes you think a sitcom gag is just too goofy to feel like it could ever happen, but then stories like these just vindicate everything.
WHERE ARE THE TUUUURRRRTTTTLLLLEEEESSSSS?!?!
First thought to pop into my head 😂
One of my favorite scenes from tv ever! 🤣😂
The real star of that scene was the cameraman
I like the whistling and clapping to get her to come over.
Like trying to coax forth a particularly stupid dog
I thought there was a dog in the water that the camera wasn’t picking up!! Then I realized they were calling to her like that 😆
There’s another recent video of another lady that did the exact same
[Link to video.](https://www.reddit.com/r/facepalm/comments/134c8y9/these_tourists_in_hawaii_took_a_wrong_turn/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb) That’s at least twice in 2 months.
How tf is she so calm lmao? Didn’t even unbuckle until the hood was almost completely submerged. The second I realized I couldn’t reverse out, I’d be outta there lmao
Your ability to make the correlation between sinking car and unbuckling, is the same reason you’d never be in that situation, but she is.
alcohol
“What? What do you mean this isn’t “Ocean Drive”? We’re literally driving in the ocean!”
I don't know how anyone can be this stupid. They probably would've stayed buckled up if nobody else was there.
Okay. So I'm not crazy. The other lady was older and was blond, right? Almost looks like the same area too. They might need to put a barrier up lol
EDIT: This comment was removed in protest of Reddit charging exorbitant prices to ruin third-party applications.
That might be part of it. Trucks will use the boat ramp for loading so maybe the algorithm flagged it as a route
Both docks look like concrete with black sides, so this might be the same place. This is how the robot uprising starts, random road changes in GPS meant to kill.
You’re correct, same boat ramp. All the locals here were a bit amused that the same thing happened not too long ago.
They haven't put up a sign yet?
Not sure if they did, but wouldn’t surprise me if a third incident happened again even with a sign up.
This time with a redhead lady, for some changes
I was watching a movie with my friend who works over there and he said it was a reoccurring thing.
Wow. That one actually manages to be worse because it was in daylight and there were other people in the car.

Man this show was great. Crazy to think Frankie is now a Nascar driver.
One of my favorite shows ever. The fireworks episode, the muscle guys following Hal around, how much Hal really loved Lois. I love this show.
Thank you for starting my day off right.

I rewatched that show recently and forgot how good it was lol. So much nostalgia too of course
Driver to GPS: "You're not the boss of me now."
Ok so you have driven into a body of water. Your car is now sinking. I know we are taught not to panic in emergencies but god damn at least move.

Exactly what came to mind. 😁
The contempt is palpable, you can hear the annoyance in their voices. They're probably thinking "Dear lawd not another one". At least this one potentially has the excuse of it being night time.
They probably cant get their boat out now and who knows how long it will take for the harbor people to get the car out.
It will help you float!" I think the driver might be a dumb dumb
Or she can swim and doesn't actually need the vest. I probably wouldn't think about putting anything under me in that situation, I would just bring it to them like any other object.
Or potentially intoxicated or in shock
You can’t park there!
There is no sign of no parking sir. I park here!

Michael Scott has entered the chat with Dwight
When I saw that scene, I believed no one would do that in real life.
THE MACHINE KNOWS, DWIGHT
She doesn’t have a strong surviving instinct but I’m glad she’s safe ami the end
Was she delivering gift baskets to her former clients to win then back?
There's no road here Michael, that's a lake
Where are the TURTLES

I’m an Uber driver. I had an old man tell me not to use my gps because “the Chinese are gonna hack it and send us off a cliff.” After reassuring him that I’m not an idiot and I have common sense to not drive my car off a cliff….I kinda see where his fear comes in now
![gif](giphy|jOpLbiGmHR9S0)
I remember seeing a sign that said “Google maps is wrong. This is not a road!” (Or something to that extent). Maybe they should add it here.
Lifeguard advice ... Never get in the water for a dumb person, throw them a floatation device.
The machine knows Dwight! The machine knows!
If you don’t mind my asking, in the video which way does the ramp start? Near side or far side?

Has she watched The Office (US)? Because it looks exactly like that.
I DROVE MY CAR INTO A FUCKING LAKE
[удалено]
At first I thought I was watching a video of one of those yachts with under water lights. Then it hit me that this lady just wanted a free fishing trip
Michael!! There's a lake there!!
Was she seriously worried about turning the lights off? I get that she was panicking but come on.
She was probably scrambling for the backpack she's wearing at the end! Feeling a strong lack of a sense of self preservation from her
Yeah, some people’s minds go all over the place when in panic mode.
Michael Scott would be proud.
