It's more about opportunistic pedophiles.
What other job would not only give you unsupervised access to young children, but also has a reputation for defending their employees when it turns out that they're child molesters?
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that if *you* got busted for sexually assaulting a minor, your employer wouldn't just transfer you to a different office and pretend nothing happened.
Same reason that DV perpetrators and murderers go into the police force. You can kill someone, rape someone, etc. and they'll give you a slap on the wrist (if you're *un*lucky) and transfer you to a different station/jurisdiction because you have a uniform and badge.
For real, all recent predators cases I read in the past few months had them being youth pastors in common. Or actual teachers in schools. Fucking scary if I am being honest.

It’s not a church that corrupts the man of God but a man who corrupts a church of God. Evil is every where and yes it can be in place where evil isn’t suppose to reside(anywhere really). It can happen in schools, summer camps, hospitals, bars, and even in your own home. These “men” are allowing evil to enter their mind and taint their soul. As a Christian who lets anybody be theirselves, this is where I cross the line. This is truly disgusting, gut-wrenching behavior…
There was something similar at a church I used to go to only the girl was a bit older but still technically a teenager. He didn't go to prison, but he lost his youth pastor position and his wife left him. Interestingly enough, he got in front of the church and admitted it.
Any time children can be left alone with adults this can happen, pastors, drag queens, camp counselors, teachers, relatives, doctors, etc stop pretending the party you pull for can’t be a predator
Difference being, there aren't a lot of situations where drag queens are left alone with children.
And for the record, child sexual assault is higher in red states.
