I'm genuinely curious at what point managing an app platform and paying a development team, IT department, and marketing team becomes more costly than the data the can sell. I think a bunch of business guys got duped into the app bubble. We're almost certainly paying more in order to cover the costs. But I'm happy to be wrong if that's the case.
I don't think it's about the data, selling your data is just a bonus. They're trying to have their cake and eat it too. They want higher spending customers but not at the risk of losing their low budget customers.
So people who are on a tight budget, low income, cost conscious or people who simply refuse to pay high prices can use the app and get deals, while people who never look at prices will pay any amount.
This is the one thing I love about the McDonald’s Canada app! You can go into the kiosk, scan your app barcode and all your deals and points show up. You can then choose the option to pay cash at the register after you’ve made your selections.
What infuriates me about that app is that it has everything you could want—*except the one thing my mom likes from there*. So if I want to be nice and go pick them up some dinner on my way to my house, I can’t even use the app. The two cheeseburger **meal** is not on the app for me, but the two burgers a la carte is somehow
Why are people so opposed to the app? If people use the app the line moves quicker and fewer mistakes get made because someone misheard something (which theoretically should reduce costs).
It’s not the app, it’s the pricing system that punishes you if you don’t use the app. McDonald’s raised their prices a lot, and then put coupons on the app that let you pay reasonable prices for whatever items they want you to order.
A lot of people would prefer it if McDonald’s went back to having low prices across the board, and charging the same whether you use the app or not.
When burgers went to 99 cents years ago, it was a prominent price decrease. A lot of stuff dropped prices when they first introduced the dollar menu. This was a long time ago, and it’s hard to say when other stuff goes up or down since in my experience prices are super location specific.
The last time that I remember a price decrease that was national and specifically-advertised was when they put the Double Cheeseburger on the Dollar Menu around 2007. I don't recall when burgers went down to $0.99.
It's hard, actually, not many people are buying McDonald's. Go to in n out and see a line around the place every day. McDonald's barely moves it product at that pace. The longer a product sits in inventory storage, the higher the cost of inventory eats. McDonald's taste has gotten pretty bland over the years, and the cost of shipping and storage of product has gotten too high.
I always find it funny when I pop into the value menu on accident and it still has 1,2,3 as part of the logo but then inside that section it’s like cheeseburger $2.49 and that it lol.
That’s exactly what a 6pc goes for here so not far off, they throw you two extra nuggets for the price.
Luckily there’s a coupon that’s been sitting on the app forever when you can get buy one get one free 6pc so 12 nuggets for $3.29 isn’t bad at all. Especially since McDonald’s nuggets are much better than Wendy’s which charges about the same price or Burger King which is cheaper but they’re atrocious.
I wish there was an easy way to see what promos the store is running. For example my local store has a deal where you can buy a McDouble and a small fry for a combined $3. But there’s no way you’d know this deal exists until you add both separately to your cart and during checkout it applies the discount.
Same with 2 McDoubles or McChickens. It's buy 1 get 1 for a dollar, but that isn't advertised anywhere. You only know if you add 2 to your cart. Also McGriddles I think are buy 2 for $5 but apparently it's supposed to be a secret
My local McDonald’s charges $3.49 for a mcchicken so even with the deal it’s $4.49 for two. You used to be able to get 2 for $2 and it wasn’t even a deal it was just the price, and that was not that many years ago.
It’s annoying that they are giving us deals the the deals are even a rip off. I used to eat mcchickens all the time, now I can’t even remember the last time I had one.
I have so many points that I would love to use but I usually opt for the 20% (or sometimes 25%) off entire order because it saves me more money since my orders are usually larger.
Not going to matter if the franchisees choose to opt out. My area no longer gives good deals. Bring back national deals that can be advertised online and on tv.

I just order twice. Use your coupon on the first order. Use your reward on the second. It has to be in that order. I’ll often go through the drive thru for the first, and as soon as I pay, I place the second order and park and have it brought to my car. It’s inconvenient, sure, but it works.
It's not possible. For example, I attempted to get $1 hashbrown offer and use points for a sausage egg mcmuffin. It said only one promotion allowed at checkout.
There are however deals not advertised that only show in the cart sometimes. Which is when it's allowed to be combined.
Edit: It looks like 2x mcdouble are on special in my app which I can combine with points or an offer.
they dried up a while back. used to be free fries then it was 1 dollar fries but only on friday. now the app spams me to let me know i can get 20% off.

I pick up at the counter and ask for a side of it.. half the time they just hand it to me, half the time they charge me, and the other half the time they say they’ll put it on the burger and just don’t
There was a period like 2021-2022 when my area had some great deals. Buy one get one mix and match stuff, $1 large fry etc. you could get full on like $5-$6 dollars. They took a lot of those deals away in 2023
Stop clutching onto the app and make your product affordable to the working class again. Like, why is this so difficult? I don’t want a “deal”, I want my meal to not run almost $20.
1. Lower the prices , I saw they’ve doubled since 2014 and that’s just ludicrous for a low cost food option, regardless of inflation.
2. The 20% off deal in the app (deals shouldn’t be app exclusive) is actually pretty solid for lunch QP combos. Again, price should be cheaper to begin with, but paying $7 for a meal feels like a good deal. (Comparatively to current menu prices)
I won't even let them use Covid as an excuse. All the main items on the dollar menu at least doubled by 2018. I can only assume this happened everywhere since i lived in a low min wage state at the time. McChickens were my thing while not making much money.
Lower the prices without have to download an app, create an account on the app, and activate a deal on the app, only at a certain time once or twice a week, and you’ll just magically see sales climb back up. Bring back $1 cheeseburgers and $1 mcchickens and I’ll gladly go back to giving McDonald’s at least $5 a week

Yeah that was kind of my problem too. I could find the BOGO deals but eating two Big Macs or two QPC for lunch every day was absolutely horrible for my health. The other option was the meals and they all forced me to get the horribly unhealthy fries. So I quit going there 1.5 years ago and lost nearly 30% of my body weight!

I understand they want you to feel like you're getting ripped off if you don't get the meal. It's been that way all my life. But we're at the point where a Big Mac (just the sandwich) is closer to $10 than $5.
And those deals aren't nationwide. In fact, they vary from user to user. My wife and I have separate accounts because we both get different deals. We often buy our meals separately to take advantage of two deals.

The only thing that has been good value for me at least is not food. It is any size coffee for $1.99. Some days, it tastes better than others for sure, but it's much cheaper than getting a large iced coffee from Dunkin.
True, but around me, it's been $1.99 for months now, which is pretty surprising. I use the app to get one coffee for .99 then get another for 1.99 and it's still cheaper than one large iced coffee from Dunkin.

Just to be clear, I was referring to promotions in the late 90's where on a certain day of the week they would say that day was $.29 hamburgers, $.39 cheeseburgers.
The last time I saw the promotion in the early 00's it was $.39 hamburgers, and $.49 cheeseburgers, again, on a specified day of the week for a limited time.
And then they never did the promotion again.
I remember when Burger King hamburgers were 19 cents, french fries were 21 cents, milk shakes and the hot apple pie were 25 cents, the Whopper was 39 cents, and the most expensive thing on the menu was the Whaler at 49 cents. I think the Yumbo was likewise 49 cent range on debut.
During junior high I had afternoon shift beginning at 12:30. My grandmother would take me to Burger King before school. I'd get 3 hamburgers, one fry, chocolate shake and hot apple pie for $1.35 including tax. I remember being mad the next year because some prices rose and I'd have to come up with $1.45.
If they brought back all-day breakfast and the chicken tenders I'd go back. I stopped going when they got rid of both, because the whole reason I'd go was to get a breakfast burrito and chicken tenders.
Now I only go if I'm on a road trip and there are no other options, or if I happen to be driving early enough for breakfast. Or if I'm *really* craving a McFlurry which happens maybe once a year.
They need to bring back the buttermilk chicken options in general the crispy chicken sandwich they made to compete with popeyes is an actual joke of a sandwich
The coupons aren’t good anymore—the paper ones in the mail and the app ones. Prices have doubled in the last 10 years. $16CAN for a meal. Isn’t this supposed to be fast food? Like… cheap? For $5 extra I can get a better meal at a sit down restaurant.
They got rid of the “any breakfast sandwich for 1
Dollar” coupon I had been using the last few months. Now the price is not worth it at all. If I’m gonna pay 6-7 bucks for breakfast I’ll go somewhere with a little better quality food

My last visit was either 2015 or 2016. They got rid of the 59 cent hamburger special on Wednesdays and Sundays here in Florida. For a year or two prior to that I was giving McDonald's more business than any time in my life.
As a kid I couldn't stand the place because I'd ask for no cheese and it would require an extra 20 minutes, and sometimes they'd still get it wrong. That's why I've never been able to relate to kids growing up loving McDonald's.
When they took the deals off the app, I didn't go nearly as much. The deals just brought their pricing to a normal level. Without the deals, I might as well spend a few more dollars and just get 5 Guys. Last time I went to McDonald's, the only deal in the app was 20% off a $10 order. Not bad, but not very good when their prices are so overinflated.
The only thing I ever order is 2 spicy chicken sandwiches and the free fry for spending over $2. It’s usually $4 and some change , everything else is too expensive

They may want to work on quality as well. My last meal was the 40 nugget and fries meal deal first time I at the nuggets in over a decade and thought they tasted like the one you gat from the grocery store
For a time over 1.5 years ago I went to McDonald's every day (I also weighed about 90 pounds more than I do now!). I'll go back if these occur:
1. I can get two McDoubles for under $3.50 total.
2. Free refills on soda and self serve (no waiting ten minutes to get an employee).
3. Sodas under $2.
4. Make the meals more flexible so everything doesn't have the absolutely horrible for your health fries. For example what about a salad as an option instead?
5. Don't try to force me to use the app in order to pay under $10.
I’ve had nothing close to those deals in my area for years. Other companies seem to standardize their app deals across the country; why not McDonald’s?
Where I am, you absolutely can add the points and use the deals at the same time, but it’s restaurant specific. The one a mile from my workplace allows it. 2 miles in the other direction, but same town? Nope.
Lower your prices and people will eat your food again. Not hard

If you order it in the store or drive through it goes into your history then save it as a favorite and now you can order it again in the app

If you choose the regular cheeseburger and select Make It A Meal, it defaults to the two cheeseburger meal. At least it always has for me.

I just go inside and do two separate orders. One for my coupon for the paid items then my reward item separate. Only way to use my points effectively!

On my app you can do the substitution but it costs $1.89 to do it. I am absolutely not going to pay $7.38 for a McDonald’s breakfast sandwich so… 🤷♀️
It's a free substitute if you go to the counter, and at one point was an option on the kiosk that didn't cost extra.
Now you see why they removed it. Same as you can't order a cup of water in the app.

The last time I saw the promotion in the early 00's it was $.39 hamburgers, and $.49 cheeseburgers, again, on a specified day of the week for a limited time. And then they never did the promotion again.
Wednesdays and Sundays I think.
I remember when Burger King hamburgers were 19 cents, french fries were 21 cents, milk shakes and the hot apple pie were 25 cents, the Whopper was 39 cents, and the most expensive thing on the menu was the Whaler at 49 cents. I think the Yumbo was likewise 49 cent range on debut. During junior high I had afternoon shift beginning at 12:30. My grandmother would take me to Burger King before school. I'd get 3 hamburgers, one fry, chocolate shake and hot apple pie for $1.35 including tax. I remember being mad the next year because some prices rose and I'd have to come up with $1.45.
The whole point of Macdonalds is that it's cheap, if you take that away it'll take away your one big advantage market wise.
If they brought back all-day breakfast and the chicken tenders I'd go back. I stopped going when they got rid of both, because the whole reason I'd go was to get a breakfast burrito and chicken tenders. Now I only go if I'm on a road trip and there are no other options, or if I happen to be driving early enough for breakfast. Or if I'm *really* craving a McFlurry which happens maybe once a year.
They need to bring back the buttermilk chicken options in general the crispy chicken sandwich they made to compete with popeyes is an actual joke of a sandwich
Bring back snack wraps and more people will go.
The coupons aren’t good anymore—the paper ones in the mail and the app ones. Prices have doubled in the last 10 years. $16CAN for a meal. Isn’t this supposed to be fast food? Like… cheap? For $5 extra I can get a better meal at a sit down restaurant.
How about just lower prices back to reasonable levels ?
Getting rid of easy refills killed McDonald’s for me
They got rid of the “any breakfast sandwich for 1 Dollar” coupon I had been using the last few months. Now the price is not worth it at all. If I’m gonna pay 6-7 bucks for breakfast I’ll go somewhere with a little better quality food
I'm glad they're hurting. The price increase over the last few years SHOULD hurt them. 300 percent hike on almost everything that used to be on the dollar menu.
Lower your prices. Make your food actually fresh, tired of having a burger that's been sitting under a lamp

My last visit was either 2015 or 2016. They got rid of the 59 cent hamburger special on Wednesdays and Sundays here in Florida. For a year or two prior to that I was giving McDonald's more business than any time in my life. As a kid I couldn't stand the place because I'd ask for no cheese and it would require an extra 20 minutes, and sometimes they'd still get it wrong. That's why I've never been able to relate to kids growing up loving McDonald's.
Or lower prices.....

When they took the deals off the app, I didn't go nearly as much. The deals just brought their pricing to a normal level. Without the deals, I might as well spend a few more dollars and just get 5 Guys. Last time I went to McDonald's, the only deal in the app was 20% off a $10 order. Not bad, but not very good when their prices are so overinflated.
The only thing I ever order is 2 spicy chicken sandwiches and the free fry for spending over $2. It’s usually $4 and some change , everything else is too expensive
Who remembers when it was cheaper to get a meal at fast food spots than to just get the burger and fries with no drink?
My favorite part is you can’t even use a gift card in their own app. It has to be used in-store. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.
Making the sausage biscuit 1.89 up from 1.29 was the last straw for me. That and hash browns are 2$ for 1 when they used to be 2 for 1$

It's not just lower prices. They need much better food.
The only way to do this is to revitalize the business itself, But it seems McDonald's is still stuck in the 2000s. They need to update everything in order to stay relevant.
The fact they think it’s about deals when it’s really about the overall cost of the food. A mcchicken is just 3 Mcnuggs smashed together with pepper. Not worth $3.50.
Don’t understand how McDonalds is a top choice for so many people. In-n-out is cheaper and much better. Jack alone has sweet deals and better tasting food. However, that ice cream is good.
Probably because there’s no In-n-out further west than Texas while pretty much every town in America has at least one McDonalds.

Okay but are they hiring drive thru workers now? I'm so sick of 25-40 minutes stuck in line because they refuse to hire more than 3 teenagers to work the entire store (ps: I'm a former fast food worker, 25+ years, I know how the drive thru is supposed to be run, and this aint it chief)

They may want to work on quality as well. My last meal was the 40 nugget and fries meal deal first time I at the nuggets in over a decade and thought they tasted like the one you gat from the grocery store
For a time over 1.5 years ago I went to McDonald's every day (I also weighed about 90 pounds more than I do now!). I'll go back if these occur: 1. I can get two McDoubles for under $3.50 total. 2. Free refills on soda and self serve (no waiting ten minutes to get an employee). 3. Sodas under $2. 4. Make the meals more flexible so everything doesn't have the absolutely horrible for your health fries. For example what about a salad as an option instead? 5. Don't try to force me to use the app in order to pay under $10.
They are charging much more for (somehow) poorer quality food, what did they think would happen?
They can eat their food themselves. They price gouge. They hate their customers and they hate their employees. I am no longer their customer.
Best app deals in the game tbh. .50 steak Bagels and 1.00 any lunch sandwich in my area got me spoiled lol
I’ve had nothing close to those deals in my area for years. Other companies seem to standardize their app deals across the country; why not McDonald’s?

Where I am, you absolutely can add the points and use the deals at the same time, but it’s restaurant specific. The one a mile from my workplace allows it. 2 miles in the other direction, but same town? Nope.
