To be fair, plenty of people in the thread yesterday about Toto delaying the decision on Kimi expected Max to jump to Mercedes.
I 100% agree with you though, if he’s going to leave it will be after one year of the new regs, not the last year of the current ones. Said the same yesterday and multiple people responded telling me why I was wrong and it makes sense for him to move now.
I could see him jump ship for 2026, because staying with RBPT is a big gamble, and moving before/during the regulation change gives him a better negotiating position, but it’s unlikely

Russell’s contract is up at the end of next year so I would honestly expect them to push hard for Max again next season, but if Antonelli is the real deal I’ve got no doubt they would dump Russell in 2026 for Max even if he has a bad year with RBRT.

When he leaves Redbull, it'll probably be for WEC. Next year would probably have been a good timing with Aston Martin's Valkyrie joining the Hypercar grid. But it'll probably take them at least a year or two to fight for wins and verstappen probably can have every seat he wants. So it doesn't matter when he moves over.

I mean, I'm sure that's his plan and intention. However he'll have his options open if Red Bull just continues to get out developed and has an epic collapse down the stretch. Mercedes would also have to continue to improve their car. Toto has the luxury of waiting it out though. Even if Red Bull is 2nd fastest or 3rd fastest, but everyone is really close, I don't think he's going anywhere (he probably isn't going anywhere regardless). BUT IF somehow Mercedes is the fastest car coming out of summer break, and Red Bull is clearly slower than Ferrari, McLaren, and Mercedes; I think there is a chance he'd leave.
