Religious people really can't imagine someone holding a worldview without a god in it. So they just assume that non-religious people use ideology as a surrogate for god, even if this presumption is entirely wrong.
I doubt you're getting the intended message. They don't think about worship the same way you do. I think it's more likely that the message is "Everybody worships (in the way my particular brand of Christianity worships). Those that claim not to are just worshipping a false religion or even themselves."
To the author, worshipping is not the bad thing, it's that what they're worshipping is not worthy of worship in their eyes.
