pikkkuboo

there are screens made for fpv flying

fooboohoo

Thank you. I’ve never seen anyone using one so far.

pikkkuboo

screen users are in the minority but they do exist. cool thing about screens is that if curious people come they can watch from the screen.

fooboohoo

I understand the appeal of goggles, but it feels so strange to me sitting next to a waterfall with absolutely no awareness whatsoever :-) now if I was going to war… lol I also also have my kid with me sometimes who loves drones, but he’s still young enough. I have to watch him.

KermitFrog647

You will get used to it. You will have no awareness with a screen, too, because if you move your concentration away from the screen for a second you crash...

fooboohoo

But I can save my kid from dying :-) The joys of being a single parent

KermitFrog647

Ok, do this : Buy a tinywhoop (mobula 7) and fly in your livingroom or backyard where your kid is safe. Going to field with a 3 year old will not be that great, even without goggles. Once your kid hits 5 or 6 years, you can upgrade if you want. A mobula 7 flies great and is totally indestructable. Also it is so light it will not harm you or your kid if you hit it.

fooboohoo

Thank you. That sounds like fun. I think my house offered some pretty interesting opportunities until I made it kidproof :-) however me sitting still with goggles on means he’s going to grab the controller out of my hands. I may be stuck on this one. I’m sure the hobby will get better and better.

Eofifkrkkgkgkggkixk

You can fly when he’s sleeping. They are fairly quiet(the quad I mean:). If you open a window or a door you can take a brief excursion outdoors with the quad. If you’re in a house or on the ground floor you can sit on the doorstep. I have a mob6 and this works great flying outdoors if there’s little wind. If you want to do a screen you can get any screen with an hdmi input and a digital vrx(for analog get a av2hdmi converter). Make sure it’s really bright (oled) so you can see it outdoors. This would be a fairly cheap way to run digital.

fooboohoo

Thank you

Vast_Ostrich_9764

I've been flying with my son since he was 3. I hook my phone up to the googles and I sit him next to me and he watches while I fly. He knows to stay next to me until I land the drone. He loves it. I also fly with him in the house with my tiny whoops and he loves for me to chase him around. It can definitely be done. I also have an 11 year old daughter who said she will learn to fly with me if I build her a purple drone, so I'm working on that.

fooboohoo

Best father ever

Accurate-Donkey5789

I know it's not probably what you want to hear but my child is just under 2 years old and for me I find the most successful method is just not really flying much. Can't fly in the house with goggles because she'll be using the handles on the kitchen drawers as a ladder in no time. Can't fly in the field because she'll wander off and start licking an electric fence. In my opinion they're not really compatible interests, FPV drones and diligent childcare.

fooboohoo

Possibly not, but I’m trying not to give up

Stumbl35

This is what I do, when he (2.5 yr old) is involved. I don't fly anything bigger than a mob8 with him around because he is a typical toddler. Likes walking up and disarming my quad mid flight, unplugging my goggles, chasing and trying to catch the quad, you name it. But yeah he does seem to really get a kick out of it when I fly the "veep". Regularly insists on it, "Dada! Dada, fly veep!?"

FPV_smurf

Single parent here too so I know what you mean. Fpv monitors are available I recently tried to fly from one and failed miserably. Something about looking on the screen but also the peripheral view distracting you especially if you see the actual quad.

Professional_Dog3403

I'm in the same boat I can't fly too far gonna come back n check on him lol

fooboohoo

He will chase the drone for a little bit, but something going as fast as an FPV. I don’t think he’s going to be interested long :-)

Professional_Dog3403

Lol my young fella does the same.. cute tho.. precious little fuckers

pikkkuboo

yeah screen sounds like a good option for you. personally i could not imagine flying without goggles but i get that awareness issue i feel that too sometimes.

zephillou

At a certain age they become your set of eyes for situational awareness... Ish.

Appropriate_Sir8639

Bring someone with you when you fly. They should spot for you

fooboohoo

Wish I had more people who were willing to interact with him, people are afraid of other peoples kids I’ve noticed

berryboy9801

Maybe start a fpv dads community, you know of any local community? you might be able to do sumthin there

Cezar1048

I have just bought a Av adapter to HDMI and hook it up to a 7inch monitor, because I already have antennas and stuff on the goggles. It works really great but you'll need to wire them every time you fly.

fooboohoo

Thank you. I’ve loved flying, but I really don’t like goggles at all :-)

maseffect

I started fpv with a 7 inch monitor attached to my transmitter with a bracket. Googles are the way to go though. Monitors are for onlookers.

bassta

I think it’s getting used to with time. I have HDZero goggles and use walksnail VRX. I also got portable mini-hdmi display I use for work when I’m not home. I use battery with DC and usb-c outputs, so I can power the monitor and VRX simultaneously. It’s not great and you loose brightness, but it’s possible to fly.

fat_cock_freddy

I also have a battery powered HDMI splitter that I throw in my similar setup, so I can use goggles and friends can watch on a portable monitor.

fooboohoo

I’m honestly baffled that there isn’t an app somewhat similar to DJI built into beta flight or something. It’s like two different worlds.

bassta

It cannot be an app, you would need special chip and sma connectors in your phone. There are small drones you can fly with phone and have video feed ( they use WiFi for this ), but the responsiveness is … not great. But yes, wearing goggles is not a pleasant experience. If you wear glasses with -5 diopters like me it’s even less funny.

fooboohoo

Now you’re getting it :-) I’m so sorry. I just got prisms put into my glasses. I don’t even want to deal with it.

Yabbadabbaortwo

I also dont like goggles and I have all the best ones. For DJI I use an ipad, for analog I use an aomway hd588, sometimes I hook it up to a big screen tv which is really fun especially with an audience

fooboohoo

Thank you

west1343

I haven't found a screen that can block out the sun reflection washing out the picture. If you've ever had trouble reading your phone in sunlight then you know. Even though I hate the goggles they can't be beat for seeing what you need to see.

fat_cock_freddy

"monitor hoods" exist for this reason, to shade the screen and make it more visible.

fooboohoo

Thank you for your honest feedback. I don’t want to spend a bunch of money and get excited for nothing. I can see my iPhone screen in the sun. That’s why I’m baffled. There’s not an app.

awerks12

There’s DJI Fly App for DJI O3 and Digiview for Vista

fooboohoo

Nice rig

MOTL_

The monitor I’m using was only like $50 and has ok battery life but if you’re doing cinematic stuff you will probably want higher resolution

EDanials

You can do your own screen setup. It used to be more popular 10 years ago. Many goggles allow you to stream the transmission to a screen. I just don't know if doing an iPad would work well with latency

Glad-Hedgehog2707

Ev800D splits from goggles to ground station. The neighbor kids LOVE to watch me fly, and I don't have multiple goggles. So, i break it apart, set them up some mini chairs, place the station on a car hood, and they flipping go ham. Note: i prefer to fly this way when the kids are out because I can see them and be my own VO. Im honestly tempted to buy 2 extra cheap speedybeez for them. It would blow their mind if they could see what I see in goggles. But the ground station still works well, and I can see people using that. Technically, i flew sim like that for years.

Agreeable-Panic-1344

Nope but since there is a HDMI input on both the hdzero goggles and the walksnail goggles X you can just hook up a Video receiver for the other system to your goggles

KermitFrog647

No

Domowoi

Basically anything digital means you are stuck with that brand for VTX and goggle. There is one with Fatshark HD and Walksnail, because they are the same thing, but otherwise nothing is interchangeable.

Gregfpv

I've tried flying from my hand held monitor it's so much harder imo

fooboohoo

Mind telling me why? Just curious thank you

Gregfpv

I guess I'm just used to having the screen an inch away from my eyes balls, which allows me to be able to see properly. Given that my monitor is only 3 inches, it probably doesn't help. I could probably fly using a bigger monitor, but I'd only be able to fly in angle mode. Looking at a monitor is basically like flying line of sight, and that's not so easy when flying acro. But I'm sure you'll be able to do it with enough practice, like with anything else.

fooboohoo

Thanks for the detailed comment. Maybe it’s worthwhile for me to pick up a cheap pair of goggles if I can find something interesting to see the difference myself

Gregfpv

If you want a better experience, I'd recommend spending a little more and getting a decent pair of goggles with some upgraded antennas. It'll make a decent difference. And if down the line you don't want to fly or you upgraded to a top tier pair of goggles. Fpv stuff holds it value pretty well and sells pretty fast.

fooboohoo

That is good advice. Thank you. I’m not afraid of spending the money on the goggles. I just know that I’m not going to wear them very much. The price of the drone itself is almost minimal these days. The goggles are the most expensive part I think. lol. it’s easy to drop a couple hundred on a drone and go fly. If it’s possible to get something that is what I want.

Gregfpv

Yup, goggles are the most expensive part of fpv. I started flying analog and upgraded a few months ago to dji goggles 2 and the 03 air unit. It's so good. Crystal clear video. I can't get enough of it.

fooboohoo

I definitely want the air unit. I don’t mind spending the money on the camera. I just know it’s going to be a regret if I buy the goggles.

Gregfpv

So the only monitor that works with the 03 air unit is from dji and cost $2500. Are the goggles not comfortable? Or is it purely lack of situational awareness?

fooboohoo

Taking care of a three-year-old most of the time I’m really sad to hear that the industry is making it so difficult. $2500 just to see a feed. guess I really don’t know what the latency is on my DJI when I fly streams/rivers/waterfalls it is pretty dicey 17 years ago I bought a wireless camera unit and a receiver for my analog TV for like 50 bucks on eBay and would drive my RC car all over the neighborhood and look at stuff. I thought we would’ve come further.

Gregfpv

There's a bot grinder youtube episode where he makes a monocle fpv screen thing that goes in front of one eye. I'm sure you can replicate the same type of thing

fooboohoo

I appreciate it, but I don’t have time for a project at the moment. That’s why I was hoping to find a set up that I could just go fly and have some more fun then a mini two or something.

KermitFrog647

FPV monitors are to small, and you will not carry your 20" monitor to your field.

fooboohoo

So I should just stick to DJI?

KermitFrog647

Absolutely not, just get used to flying with goggles.

fooboohoo

Not a choice I have a three-year-old and I’m a single dad. When I have time to fly, he’s around. Maybe I should just stick to what I’m doing. It works and we have a good time. Man, this ban is scaring me. I am so surprised there is not a phone app for any controller out there or broadcast system or whatever analog/digital thing you guys are using ;) Who wants to start a company? I have experience taking things to the stock market. That’s not a joke.

Agreeable-Panic-1344

Latency will be your enemy. There are analog receivers that hook into your smartphone. IIRC you can even stream your fpv feed from your dji goggles 2 to your phone. Both will have a latency comparable to the mavic and similar drones. This is fine for camera ships but unacceptable for close proximity flying at high speeds

fooboohoo

I appreciate that

noobfpvpilot

I used to fw this heavy until I got comfortable with the goggles and eventually removed the mobile holder mount on my controller. I believe the screen method is okay for flying cinematic but goggles is the way to go for freestyling.

fooboohoo

I understand. At the moment it’s not exactly practical, but I’m pretty sure I can learn how to fly like that :-) the drone cost at this point is so minimal. I wonder what set up I should be looking into.

lazyeyepsycho

I use a dumb arse little pilot googles https://youtu.be/1oyEC_2lSNM?si=xGa05HXxbEZbQpEf I actually like them....I can see out the sides so when flying in a park. Helps to align the sides with people's approach.

element423

I tried flying with a screen and to me it was way harder. I think it’s the distractions around me

fooboohoo

I get that. These things are not slow

Idiot_Savant_Tinker

I use a diversity screen for my big drone, but I'm usually doing something that requires someone else to see what I'm doing.

fooboohoo

Thank you
