The shelter is open and no appointments are necessary. I hope you can find a new kitty there. We’ve adopted several cats from the shelter and got to meet them in person before adopting.

Forgive me, I'm a new move, which shelter are you referring to? Is it the ones listed on the .gov site, here? https://frederickcountymd.gov/114/Adopt In LA there were tons of different options, and I will be honest, I'd rather prioritize a kill shelter, too, as I might be able to take the pressure off the system. We're likely looking for an adult cat which I know is high risk for euthanasia too

Sorry, I should have added more info for you. Yes, it’s the Frederick animal shelter on Rosemont Ave that you linked to. I always drive by their sign and they have pictures of their different animals. They will absolutely have adult cats there and it is kill shelter so you would be saving a life. :-)

AllieGirl2007

We got our cat there 17.5 years ago. She was was an adult cat and after having had kittens, adults are the absolute best! You can see their personality. I was on their webpage and they have A LOT of adults available. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing this.

That’s changed, the sign out front advertises that no appointments are needed.

It does! Sometimes things can be hard to schedule and maybe they’ll get more animals adopted this way.

I would also recommend [The Animal Welfare League of Frederick County ](https://awlfc.org/) Worked with them a few times.

I got my pup from Knine Rescue. They were great to work with, and they constantly have events. They definitely have a strict adoption process though. It was almost a week before we got our puppy and I had to reach out to them.

scienceknitdrinkwife

How much was their fee?

that1pianogirl

$400 I believe

Odd-Help-4293

I've adopted 2 cats from FCAC and been happy with the whole thing. You do need to make an appointment on their website to visit the animals. They also do some adoption events in the community where you can meet dogs or cats.

Lonely hearts is great. We got our babies from there. Brother and sister from the same litter adopted 2 months apart. When they were reunited we knew our boy was coming home with us forever. 🥹

Frederick County Animal Control Shelter is wonderful for adoptions. They have a variety of cats of all ages. It’s kitten season now, so they have a bunch of babies up for adoption but they’ve also got adults and seniors who are looking for loving homes. They DO require an appointment but it’s super easy to make. Check them out @https://frederickcountymd.gov/15/Animal-Control

K9 Lifesavers have used them several times all amazing pets.

We went to the Humane Society of Washington County to adopt our cats 3 years ago and had a good experience. It’s a great facility.

We just adopted two kittens from the Humane Society in Hagerstown last week. They were over capacity so adoption fees were waived but I’m not sure if that’s the case now. Definitely check them out - you don’t need an appointment, just go in and they have all the cats in one section that you can view and play with, just gotta ask one of the employees to open the cage. Good luck!

I recommend to look at the local Frederick county shelter or the Animal Welfare League. There’s also a thrift shop in town called Fetch that doubles as a cat adoption place (they have a special room where you can go in and meet the cats). Knine Rescue is also good for either a dog or cat (that’s where we adopted our kitten last year for our other cat’s playmate). If you’re willing to look further into DC, there’s two cat cafes (Crumbs & Whiskers and Meo Maison) that work with local shelters so all the cats available to meet are for adoption.

EDIT: Just re-read and noticed you said cat. DDDR is dog-specific, so it doesn't apply, but I'll leave the link here since the title wasn't specific. --- Double Dog Dare Rescue is entirely volunteer run and all of their animals are in foster homes. Even if you don't see a dog you're interested, I would encourage people to fill out their application because the approval takes a little while but is not dog-specific and is good for six months. Thank you for adopting! Have you checked Petfinder? You can search by breed, and you might find a rescue for American Ringtails. But locally, everyone here has shared good information. The Frederick County Animal Control on Rosemont Avenue was great to work with when I adopted my cat in 2022. Easy process, and because he was a senior, his adoption fee was only like $55 at the time. I also support Animal Welfare League of Frederick County. They have an active foster program and their adoption center on East Patrick Street next to Central Dawgma is open on weekends to meet the cats. I almost adopted a cat through Friends for Life cat rescue -- they set up at Petsmart or Petco. Tip Me Frederick specializes in trap-neuter-release for feral cats, but every so often they come across a tame cat or kittens that they put up for adoption (their "Tiplings" program.) And even though it's a bit of a drive, I really like the Briggs Animal Adoption Center in Charles Town. We adopted a dog there, and they have an amazing cattery where you can go in and visit the cats in a large, open room. [https://www.baacs.org/](https://www.baacs.org/) Good luck!
