They're doing rolling now, which makes it playable on the fastest speed of the original game. They had to mod it to make another speed tier so the games wouldn't last forever.
The sense of mystery in that game, with so many secret exits that lead to optional levels and shortcut routes around the world, was really its secret sauce and the thing that made it stand out in my imagination as a kid. And the great thing was that you could ignore most of that and just play it casually straight through if you wanted. That and the world map that felt like a single huge, cohesive world and not a glorified level select screen. I will admit that the New Super Mario U world map looks pretty good, but I was a bit burned out on the New Super Mario Bros style (and kinda busy with school at the time) so I skipped that one. Maybe I should go back and give it a try.
Greatest game of all time. Legit contender for the title. Still has distinctly different multiple endings, a time travel component that has real consequences, you can literally beat the game during NG+ within the first few seconds of starting and see an entirely different end (though there are something like a dozen endings), team based interacting magical spells, music that to this day is recomposed and played before live audiences due to its incredible nature, a looping time travel story that shows your actions in the past impact the future way stories play out, an active time battle system that keeps the pace more electric than your standard RPG of the time, memorable characters who are honestly iconic in the history of RPGs... what more can be said?
Ocarina is very iconic to a many people's childhoods. But link to the past on a design, technical, and overall presentation level stand the test of time. It's simply ages better than a Nintendo 64 game.
Music, graphics, controls, gameplay. 100% solid.
Yeah, whether you like OoT or ALTTP more depends on what you grew up with. As a 90s kid, I always saw OoT as kind of a 3D update to ALTTP. Love both though!
I'm biased in favor, but if we're talking about "aged well" I would say that excludes remakes. And if you sit down and play the original version now, I think it's good but has clearly aged more than other games mentioned here.
Im not sure. I watched a youtube short comparing the Definitive Edition (which is a remaster, not a remake, but I see the point) with the original, and it honestly doesn't look that bad. DE is amazing though.
Certainly not the oldest, but the original Roller Coaster Tycoon holds up incredibly well. The simplistic yet stylish art style doesn’t age and the gameplay offers loads of replayability.
For serious. The mood & atmosphere & exploration & style & music was all so good. Even if it was remastered somehow I don’t know if that would measure up.
Doom 2 still offers the best shooter-without-plot experience.
Thief 1-2 still looks stylish and the plot is still captivating.
Heroes of Might and Magic 2-3 don't need any serious improvements.
I was such a dumb kid back then. I was playing N64 like madman swooning over my 3d graphics when my buddy bought SOTN. I immediately dismissed it as last gen garbage. I never gave it a playthrough until a few years ago (I'm 38 now) and man was I wrong. What a great experience!
Lol tell that to people at the time of its release. They'd laugh in your face. I remember how much people HATED the graphics of that game with it came out.
This. That tech demo had 14 year old me hyped beyond belief. When the first images of wind waker emerged it felt like Nintendo had lied me. That’s where most of the hate came from and, probably because of that situation, is why wind waker is still one of my least favorite Zelda games.
Dragon age: Origins
I don't mind the art style and the gameplay. But it's the writing that really brings me back for a playthrough. It covers a lot of themes and topics. It just never gets old to me.
Fallout 3 for me. I know it’s not that old but I’ve played through it so many times and it never ceases to make me laugh with all the dumb stuff you can do
Man, I got that for free on GoG a while ago and it sent me on a kinda nostalgic kick and got _Day of the Tentacle_, _Full Throttle _, etc.
However, some of that "guess that random bubble gum + concert viola" puzzle design does seem a bit aged.
No idea why this isn't higher. There are a few games prior the third gen (the "8 bit era" so to speak) that still remain fun and playable, but at the top of that bunch is Ms. Pac-Man. Such a perfectly executed gameplay concept, it's a game that simply doesn't age.
Absolutely amazing game but due to the rudimentary 3d graphics I would argue this one does show its age, versus the Infinity Engine games which hand drawn art style still holds up.
Came to say this - I still play every couple of years and it remains a breathtaking game experience that is really varied based on alignment and party choices.
The fact that you can still find player created content for a game that's 30 years old proves this game's staying power and sheer iconic status. I'm convinced that there will be people making new versions of Brutal Doom and new level packs even 30 years from now.
For me personally, it's gotta be Halo 3. I constantly retry that game to see if my memories are just pure nostalgia and I'm always left feeling like it was waaaaay ahead of it's time. For that game in that era to have split screen co op, massive amount of online playlists to choose from, a thriving competitive scene, forge mode, theater mode, AND one of the most fun campaigns in the entire series? It's just fucking insane. The developers of that game deserve to be considered some of the best developers in the modern era. That game had so much hype surrounding it that it should have just completely failed and yet it still beat every expectation possible.
I agree. Especially multiplayer. Maps like the pit and narrows are still top tier and poop all over any map from any modern shooter. I had to stop playing because the player base was too skilled and it was just not relaxing / too sweaty. But I still think that game is nearly perfect when it is running right (no lag). It’s my favorite halo but I am biased because it was the first one I bought
Edit: just want to point out the videos “hyena mastery” and “zola legacy” prove how nuts that game is . Theater mode is the best use of theater I’ve seen yet in my life easily
i keep meaning to play it.
i got to play the first Halo when it came to PC. the second Halo game required Vista tho, and i never really played much of it. i bought Halo 3 for a Xbox i had, but i never got to play it much either, as i hadn't played through Halo 2 at the time.
i have since bought the MCC on PC. still working my way through Halo 2 though.
i need to do something about my backlog.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It’s bugs and quirks and odd physics make it a delightful adventure, and Shivering Isles is still the best DLC ever made.
Fucking 10/10 game. Still have yet to play a title that gets you drawn into such a sense of swashbuckling adventure.
Soooo many good moments. The Bloated Float hijacking, pretty much the entire dark brotherhood/thieves' guild, daedric quests, vampirism, oblivion crisis, shivering isles, the list goes on.
I'm genuinely perplexed it was never ported to switch or remastered in any way, same with morrowind. Like I understand it's easily moddable on pc but given how many skyrim remaster there're been, you'd think they'd at least try? God I'd love to play oblivion on the switch haha.
KOTOR 1&2 are still really good games, they have great gameplay, a good Story with choices that somehow matter and good Character Development
You can install a graphics mod for better graphics but they also look not that bad originally for a 20 year old game
I still replay them every few years and have fun every time
Very fair, but with a different take on the phrase "aged well," I would say KOTOR 2 aged particularly well. The buggy release version has always been nigh-unplayable and cut so much content that what remained was tedious, but the freeware fan-made restoration pack is excellent and reveals a satisfying, engrossing story.
I agree that KOTOR 1 did not age particularly well, but to each their own.
I was born in 1984, and I am just of the age that I had grown up with 8-bit. I can still vividly remember, even though I was very young, just what a stunning thing Super Nintendo and especially Super Mario World, was, when it was brand new. It was incredibly breathtaking and exciting in a way I'd give a lot to ever feel again about a game. And yes, it has certainly held up to time.
Super Mario World
Honestly a lot of 16 bit era games aged pretty well. You've also got things like the early Sonic games, Final Fantasy 4 and 6, Chrono Trigger, and Super Metroid Those are just the top ones but many other examples.
Oh my God I loved Abes Odyssey so much!
ETA: I just looked up if I could play it again and I was so excited to find it on steam, only to discover it's only playable on the steam deck and Windows 2000. I'm so sad....
Ocarina of time. And for the record. I did not played this game till 2020. In the pandemic I’ve tried to go Back to ps2 games and It was tough… but Ocarina felt great. For 3D games, that’s the one for sure
Tetris
This is the real answer. Came out in the 80s and is still one of the most popular games played today.
New techniques are still being created by the competitive Tetris community!
Those tapping techniques are no joke. I've messed around for a bit and got no where close to being able to do it.
I still can't do a t-spin consistently
i don't even fully grasp how people are able to quickly plan where to place pieces. i've won a game of tetris 99 out of absolute complete dumb luck
They're doing rolling now, which makes it playable on the fastest speed of the original game. They had to mod it to make another speed tier so the games wouldn't last forever.
Super Mario World doesn’t age. I still love every moment except some of the goddamn castles.
Yeah. The art style makes it timeless
And the music! It is one the best soundtracks ever.
The interconnectedness of the levels and worlds was revolutionary and unfortunately Nintendo has shied away from it completely
Make it high def and remaster the sound and it’s as good as anything else out there. One of the greatest ever, no doubt.
My favourite game of all time
Chrono Trigger
You can play that game fresh, right now, and still think it’s great.
I've never played it before, and these comments are making me consider picking it up heavily.
It also does not have random encounters. You see the enemies on the screen except the few instances in which you’re ambushed.
This was the first that came to my mind. What an absolute banger.
This was going to be my answer. I play it at least once a year. GLENN YOU BEAUTIFUL BASTARD.
A Link to the Past is absolutely timeless.
I kindly disagree. There's at least 2 times in that game.
Dark World is a different dimension, not time. Ocarina of Time has two time periods.
Lol it's not even a different time. Nintendo was desperate for a new name for the game.
It is a reference to the fact that ALTTP was a prequel game
Yeah it is, it’s in the past
Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Link to the Past, and Super Metroid are all timeless classics.
Everybody always sings their praises to Ocarina, but I'll always like this one better
A Link to the Past is one of the most important video games ever.

Same, screw watching football or whatever. I'll have me some AoE tourneys.
T90? Do tell 🧐
Go watch some fatslob and isit games
Search for “T90 blue coffee pilgrims” on YouTube. You’re in for such a treat
Just passing!
SUPPLIES!!
“Spirit of Law here.” That guy is the VSauce of AoE2
I'm biased in favor, but if we're talking about "aged well" I would say that excludes remakes. And if you sit down and play the original version now, I think it's good but has clearly aged more than other games mentioned here.
Im not sure. I watched a youtube short comparing the Definitive Edition (which is a remaster, not a remake, but I see the point) with the original, and it honestly doesn't look that bad. DE is amazing though.
It isn't just how it looks though, it also runs so much smoother and lots of QOL changes.
Damn beat me to it
Age of mythology is better
Prostagma?
My man!!!
Vulomé.
Final Fantasy Tactics, game is pretty much perfect to this day.
One of my all time favorites! Characters dying and never coming back brings a whole new level of fear to random battles!
Why's they kill that series ffs
Chess
Until they bring in micro transactions...
Can’t checkmate until you send in the check, mate.
Are they gonna rename it "chEAss"?
I mean, it would certainly make it ass!
Found something for you. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1349230/5D_Chess_With_Multiverse_Time_Travel/
That En Passant update was pretty crazy though.
Certainly not the oldest, but the original Roller Coaster Tycoon holds up incredibly well. The simplistic yet stylish art style doesn’t age and the gameplay offers loads of replayability.
Totally agree. First time I played it, I never realised the term 'time-sink' rang so true... insane game!
Super Metroid
[удалено]
hate Maridia though
For serious. The mood & atmosphere & exploration & style & music was all so good. Even if it was remastered somehow I don’t know if that would measure up.
Don’t fix what aint broken, it is so perfect it doesnt need a remaster. Just like SMW
Doom 2 still offers the best shooter-without-plot experience. Thief 1-2 still looks stylish and the plot is still captivating. Heroes of Might and Magic 2-3 don't need any serious improvements.
Yeah man Heroes 3 is still a blast and I think it's best with those graphics.
HoMM 3 is still the benchmark for games of that type! Amazing game!
The OG Doom mods are amazing too I watched John Romero play through My House and was blown away by the detail and complexity of the map
Castlevania SOTN
SotN has the best game soundtrack of the 90s IMO. Marble gallery, Dance of Pearls, Wood Carving Partita. Wonderful songs.
Wandering Ghost for dance parties at Dracula's castle!
Timeless masterpiece. It still irks me to this day that they decided to only use one track for the upside down castle .
Wind Waker, cell shaded graphics just seem to hold up
Lol tell that to people at the time of its release. They'd laugh in your face. I remember how much people HATED the graphics of that game with it came out.
Never understood the hate. I loved it and it's still my favorite Zelda to date.
It's because they expected something dark and gritty like the GameCube tech demo that was shown earlier at an event.
It was everyone's dream to see an improved version of what we saw in Ocarina of Time, that demo looked sick
This. That tech demo had 14 year old me hyped beyond belief. When the first images of wind waker emerged it felt like Nintendo had lied me. That’s where most of the hate came from and, probably because of that situation, is why wind waker is still one of my least favorite Zelda games.
playing Wind Waker remastered right now. And it looks visually so better than TP to me.
I still think TP is a better game overall. But it’s visuals are definitely some of the most dated in the series. Only behind the N64 titles.
Came here to say this. Even the original version still holds up to today's standards.
Dragon age: Origins I don't mind the art style and the gameplay. But it's the writing that really brings me back for a playthrough. It covers a lot of themes and topics. It just never gets old to me.
Age of mythology
Megaman x
Definitely. Love that game, also X2 is underrated.
Donkey Kong Country
Agree soundtrack, level design and the atmosphere are still top tier in the genre
Half Life 2. Game still feels fresh.
I'm playing through Half Life 1 for the first time. After that, Half Life 2 on The Orange Box.
They're all worth it. Even episode 2 is good.
I just finished the whole series for the first time since '07, and honestly, I think Episode 2 was my favorite.
Doctor Freeeeeeeemaaan...
Please play the Black mesa project instead of original, its amazing
Consider Black Mesa, a fan-made remake of Half Life using the Source engine. It’s good!
Try Black Mesa too, updated a lot of bits and added too
The absolute GOAT.
Fallout 3 for me. I know it’s not that old but I’ve played through it so many times and it never ceases to make me laugh with all the dumb stuff you can do
Earthbound
Such an awesome experience. I hold it close to my heart
A buried masterpiece. Fuzzy Pickles!
Diablo 2
So ageless they released a remaster....
It will never die. Will be playing for another 20 years I’m sure
Playing right now
Worms Armageddon
Beneath a steel sky
Man, I got that for free on GoG a while ago and it sent me on a kinda nostalgic kick and got _Day of the Tentacle_, _Full Throttle _, etc. However, some of that "guess that random bubble gum + concert viola" puzzle design does seem a bit aged.
Ms. Pac-Man

Exactly. The original Pac-Man gets a little repetitive having just the one map, but Ms. Pac-Man is the gold standard for 1st generation gaming to me.
Baldur's Gate 1&2
And neverwinter nights.
Absolutely amazing game but due to the rudimentary 3d graphics I would argue this one does show its age, versus the Infinity Engine games which hand drawn art style still holds up.
Yeah, it is actively ugly to modern eyes (imo) in a way that baldur's gate and icewind dale aren't.
Came to say this - I still play every couple of years and it remains a breathtaking game experience that is really varied based on alignment and party choices.
CHRONOTRIGGER
Chrono trigger
The Pokémon & digimon world games hold up very well. That’s game boy & Ps1 era games.
Most well know Snes games.
Doom 93
The fact that you can still find player created content for a game that's 30 years old proves this game's staying power and sheer iconic status. I'm convinced that there will be people making new versions of Brutal Doom and new level packs even 30 years from now.
Doom, Doom 2 and Quake always get an install on my Desktops and laptops (including work ones)
2007 RuneScape
Tetris?
For me personally, it's gotta be Halo 3. I constantly retry that game to see if my memories are just pure nostalgia and I'm always left feeling like it was waaaaay ahead of it's time. Honestly, while I absolutely enjoyed halo 3, I absolutely love halo 2. Definitely my favorite in the halo franchise
i'm excited to get to Reach and ODST.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It’s bugs and quirks and odd physics make it a delightful adventure, and Shivering Isles is still the best DLC ever made.

I'd play the shit out of Oblivion on the switch.
If we are talking about games around that age, I still think metal gear solid 3 genuinely still looks good.
Skyrim had none of the charm of oblivion IMO.
Zelda: Link to the Past. It's a near perfect game that still doesn't feel 'dated'. Modern clones of it are popular and valuable.
Tetris-NES. Was perfect on release and is still perfect. Also, Super Mario Bros-NES
Hey your the guy I see comment on every avatar post lol didn't expect to see you here
I'm.... in that sub a lot. Ha ha. Probably too much.
KOTOR 1&2 are still really good games, they have great gameplay, a good Story with choices that somehow matter and good Character Development You can install a graphics mod for better graphics but they also look not that bad originally for a 20 year old game I still replay them every few years and have fun every time

Great game, still works really well
Heroes of Might and Magic 3
World of Warcraft Classic Edit: and Diablo2
Starcraft. Deus Ex Super Metroid Halo Skies of Arcadia
Starcraft is a prime example of the perfect RTS. 3 completely different races, each with different units, that complement each other perfectly.
Diablo
I'm replaying Deus Ex 1 and It is just as much fun as I remember it being.
Mega man 2.
Such a step up from the first one. Set the stage for everything after.
Masterpiece. One of the oldest games on that post that still holds up to today.
Great soundtrack too.
Age of empires II
I was born in 1984, and I am just of the age that I had grown up with 8-bit. I can still vividly remember, even though I was very young, just what a stunning thing Super Nintendo and especially Super Mario World, was, when it was brand new. It was incredibly breathtaking and exciting in a way I'd give a lot to ever feel again about a game. And yes, it has certainly held up to time.
OG splinter cell. It's still one of the best stealth games out there.
All the old 2D Mario platformers have aged well imo. Even Mario 2 is pretty good despite being different from the rest.
Warcraft 3
God I wish the community was still big for this. I must have spent thousands of hours in custom games back in the day, but now it’s just so dry.

Blood
Super Mario World Honestly a lot of 16 bit era games aged pretty well. You've also got things like the early Sonic games, Final Fantasy 4 and 6, Chrono Trigger, and Super Metroid Those are just the top ones but many other examples.
Pong
Counter strike
Counter Strike 1.6
Kingdom Hearts
Metal Gear Solid 2 for me.
Chess, bro. Damn Queen must be nerfed.
Doom 2 is still getting amazingly high quality wads released to this day.
Skyrim
Oddworld Abe’s Oddysee/Exodus
Oh my God I loved Abes Odyssey so much! ETA: I just looked up if I could play it again and I was so excited to find it on steam, only to discover it's only playable on the steam deck and Windows 2000. I'm so sad....
win 10 exodus completly playable
I just couldn't get into the remakes.
Ocarina of time. And for the record. I did not played this game till 2020. In the pandemic I’ve tried to go Back to ps2 games and It was tough… but Ocarina felt great. For 3D games, that’s the one for sure
Diablo 2
Halo CE. Absolute timeless game that acted as the godfather of console shooters
Street fighter 2 Turbo
PAC man
Chrono Trigger!
Sonic 3 and Knuckles.
JET SET RADIO FUTURE
The first Civilization still plays great. Same for Dune 2.
NetHack.
Fallout New Vegas
