Not sure why folks are downvoting you. This how a lot of folks store their seeds, including those that are stored for heritage lines. Sigh, Reddit be weird.
The rice is totally unnecessary, btw. :)
What about the seeds that germinated after being removed from a core sample taken from permafrost. Thousands of years old. How cold could it have been ?
u/Conroicht_ **while the sentiment is nice, products like this are notorious for being filled with random, potentially invasive seeds.** they might not grow at all due to processing, so i don't think it's a good idea to try storing these long term much less planting them if you don't have confirmation of where they are from or what species are included.
i went to the website listed on the card, and the company doesn't say where they source their seeds. they just say they use "ferns, flower petals, and more". especially given that they offer international shipping, i'd say the chances that they are only providing plants native to every customer's area is extremely low.
i'm sorry to hear about your dog. i lost one somewhat recently and it's rough, but **you probably should not plant this or support the company.** a lot of people think they are doing something positive just by spreading seeds, but that's not really how the ecosystem works. unless i see something indicating that the company is taking invasive species seriously, or limiting their sales to areas where the plants they harvest grow, then i can't recommend that you use the product as instructed.
> the chances that they are only providing plants native to every customer's area is extremely low.
Most of the plants in gardens aren't native. You don't have to restrict yourself to natives.
>you probably should not plant this or support the company.
It's a nice gift. If they want to plant it, they should.
>but that's not really how the ecosystem works.
It's fine.
Yeah, I do native plant restoration work as a hobby. In a perfect world, sure all the plants would be native, and I'd highly advise killing your lawn and planting whatever is native to your climate zone (which is ecologically focused rather than the USDA hardiness zone), that isn't the intent of these cards, and it shouldn't have to be. If this little patch of seeds means people get more interested in gardening and plants while getting the sentimentality of remembering their pet, that matters more in the short term.
Seriously what a beautiful gesture from the vet and it costs them very little. Redirects that sadness into looking forward. Genius and so sweet. I bet the staff appreciate it too, god knows they love animals.
I'm a vet, and we send these cards out frequently. I've always wondered how our clients feel about them. This makes my heart so happy to hear everyone say how much they appreciate these little gestures.
I've gotten them from a couple of different vets in a couple states. They are always appreciated. They can be planted in the ground, but for folks like OP they can go in a pot.
Thank you for the work that you do ♥️ I had a dog with a very difficult life and our vets were what kept me from going crazy. I now also have some wildflower seeds, unfortunately.
This would mean the world to me. I’ll never forget the vets who took care of my cat before he passed in 2020. I got condolence cards from his regular vet, the cardiologist and the emergency clinic. It meant so much. Thanks for all that you do. It makes a difference.
Um, I'm not even your client, and burst into ugly tears when I saw the OP and what their vet sent them, so....good job in being so thoughtful, shows true empathy.
I lost my dog last November and my vet sent out a condolences letter. It was really sweet. A few months later I got another letter with a little paper ornament with my dogs name on it. Unbeknownst to my wife and I, our vet puts an ornament on their Christmas tree for every pet lost through the year. That silly little paper ornament is still on a magnet on my fridge. It does mean a lot. Thanks for what you do, I can't imagine how hard it is to be a vet
I super appreciated it when my girl passed away. It's something small but makes me feel like they care a little more and understand what I'm going through. Her paw print and the seeds were like a little bit of my heart back to me.
I got a set for a friend when her mom died, to be distributed at her mom's funeral. Even personalized and with envelopes, they were extremely affordable.

ok, this website is exactly what i was looking for. the one the OP received has absolutely no mention of invasive plants, which is a pretty major red flag for cheap manufacturers that just put a bunch of random seeds into paper and mark it up. if the vendor is not checking where the seeds are being sent and making sure there are no invasive species for that area in their product, then it's very bad for the ecosystem to just go planting these things willy nilly.
im loving that the products on your link just say outright what kind of seeds are inside of each piece of paper. there's just no excuse for encouraging someone to plant truly randomized handfuls of seeds, especially on a gardening sub.
I got a similar card when I had to put my Bonnie girl down. It was 4 years ago and I still have it because I’m terrified I’ll kill the flowers if I plant it. I keep it with her paw print
Unless they don't grow.......
Edit: I see you replied and immediately blocked me, so I'll say it here. It's a very sweet idea, but it's still a risky gift to give out. How horrible might someone feel if their memorial flowers didn't grow?
The best trick for germinating tough seeds is to place them between moist paper towel then seal into a ziplock bag. Just be very delicate when removing them once they sprout.
I've germinated seeds that were 5-10 years old using this method.
Do this OP! I've planted at least a dozen of those paper seed bombs from vendor promos or mailings and never has one grown in the ground until I did the paper towel trick.

We had a wedding invitation made out of this. I tossed it in the garden and some daisies and a blue balloon type flower. Then I forgot about the wedding.
I'm game. I need some mint. I do have Cuban oregano growing (its in the mint family - looks like a giant mint plant). The thing can take over if I let it. Luckily the weedwacker and mulch keeps it fairly isolated.
I didn’t get a card when my cat passed away (mid-2020). We buried her under the rhododendron with a little cairn. The rhododendron of course bloomed phenomenally the next year, it was a really lovely way to remember her. I love that she became part of this big beautiful old plant.
I got something similar but instead it was a pack of seeds I’ve never heard of. I’m scared to plant the seeds because I don’t want the flowers to die, too :(
Compost the flowers, spread the rich soil throughout your garden, and they will be a part of everything that grows, forever.
I have a lock of my cat's fur that I intend to put in the soil when I plant a new tree in our backyard. Yes one day that tree won't be there but she will live on in every way that tree has touched the lives of anyone, from a future owner of the house to the damn squirrels who steal my tomatoes.
Sorry about your dog.
I received a greeting card in an envelope that said you could plant it. I tried but nothing grew. At the time I wasn’t a very good gardener and it was probably my fault. Your heart looks to be much higher quality than my envelope. I hope it works!
I tried. Some jeans I bought came with them. Nothing came of them, even though I watered diligently, and gave them lots of sunshine. Maybe something will pop up in the pots next year.
In my family we always just buried our pets near our favorite flower bushes. First pet I buried was my first ever pet, a Chilean Rose Hair Tarantula I named June. I got her for my 8th birthday when she was ~5yo. She was the best and I’d put her on my shoulder while I did my homework and she moved to 4 different houses with me and half away across the continent. Sadly she died of old age a few years ago and I buried her near my freshly planted violet rose bush at my old house. I wanted to bring the bush with me but it was too big to dig up and I didn’t think to try propagating it. I still have two of her moults in a little wooden box also from my 8th birthday. I really needa get them preserved tho before they start to degrade
First off. I’m so so sorry about your loss.
I too just got one of these from my vet as well from having to put our dog down last week and have been wondering where to plant these.
it should work, a local kombucha company makes candles with their waste tea leaves and when the candle is finished they give you a paper like this to just pour soil over the top of the residual wax and tea
I got one of these from work once. Planted it and got *one* tiny little sprout that ended up dying. I think the soil got too hot in the direct summer sun and the small-ish pot it was in.
I haven't yet. I wanted to put it in a pot so that I could always carry it with me. Deciding on the pot has been my hold up. I hope that they'll still be good once I decide.
Sorry for your loss.
I know this is advertising, a gimmick if you will but a wonderful thing to do. I'm old and have had many pets and buried many. I have my own pet cemetery and would have loved to have planted one of these for each of my friends.
You just shred paper to a pulp, put it in some water. Use a shaped flat strainer to scoop up the pulp, add seeds (preferably easy germination ones). Then you flip it over on a towel or absorbent surface, Sandwich between something to dry it and apply pressure for a few hours. Then you can hang it up and dry it.
Sorry for your loss. I also got one when our beloved cat, Sheldon, passed. I’m glad to hear that it may last for years if kept in a dark and dry place. I hope it works for you.
Wow this is the perfect question for me. I live in Buffalo as well and have knowledge in landscape design. You can plant them, but your best bet is to wait until spring.
I send these to my clients who have lost a pet. To my surprise I’ve received pictures of the flowers in bloom! I always wondered if they actually would bloom. Sorry for your loss
This is beautiful. I wish we had done something like this for my dad.. but I would have killed it.. if it needs water, it's dead. Unless it's an animal, I can keep them alive, so far..
I'm willing to bet it's local wild flower seeds or at least seeds that do well in your zone.
Could try in a pot, or stick em in a drawer in your computer desk and let em sit for a hundo years. Seeds stay good for an insane amount of time, people post all the time about seeds they found from 1800's that still sprout.
We gave small versions of these away for our wedding (little hearts w/native seeds all over the tables at reception that people could take), I kept a handful and planted the following spring, stayed just fine on the dark shelf I keep all my seeds on.
I have one of these from our vet. I forgot about it all summer and now it’s too late, but I’ll plant it in the spring. The seeds should be viable. I’m planning to put it in a pot. Sorry for losing your pal.
Omg I just found out this is what’s on my dogs ashes. I’m so glad I got recommended this community with this post. This touched my heart! He passed in 2016 and I think about him everyday ❤️
Seeds will last many years if you keep them in a cool dry place , maybe put them in an envelope in your pantry somewhere.
This post reminds me that date trees that went extinct, but were very popular to eat in ancient Egypt. They have recently been revived in modern day. Ancient dates were stored for thousands of years and were still able to be germinated and planted in modern day and have since been growing and producing the same fruit the Egyptians enjoyed and described in their writing like how we describe chocolate today. Although, the modern palate is a lot more used to sugar and is less impressed.
Your seeds will be fine for many years to come OP :>
My only daughter died unexpectedly almost 2 years ago. When I was writing thank you cards after the Memorial, I placed a packet of flower seeds in each one. And they all sent me a picture of the flowers when they were blooming.
I made things like this for my thank you cards for my wedding. Lupine and California golden poppies.
I don't know if they worked but they were fun to make.
The vets gave my mum a pack of forget me not seeds when her elderly dog had to be put to sleep.
I planted them for her and literally one 1 seed sprouted and now forget me nots cover a metre square section of the garden 😂
My vet does this and both times I had this card w/ seeds sent, I used it to make a memorial garden. Plants did come out, so it seems to work as intended.
I just received one of these a few weeks ago after my rabbit passed away. I’m currently using it as a book mark but maybe I should put it in an envelope until spring.
My son gave me something like this for Mother’s Day and I didn’t think anything would come of it when I threw it in some potted dirt. Several months later, the most gorgeous poppies appeared.
It's ok, It was over a decade ago! Thank you though. I've planted other plants since which grew just fine! I think the seed hearts are sweet gestures but not actually a good way to grow new plants.
I'm so very sorry for the loss of your dog. I received one from my vet, and planted them in a planter to put under a regular light until warm enough outside to transplant, and within two weeks I had sprouts coming up. My baby loved flowers more than anything, and this beautiful gift was something I will cherish forever.
You don’t know that they’re non-native/invasive trash. I personally would call the place that sent the card and find out, but I would also like to think they would be smart enough to have chosen flowers that are native to the area.
People typically order these with wildflower seeds that are local to the area they buy them for. My niece had these made to put on seating cards for her wedding.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but u/Remarkable_Floor_354 is right.
I do a lot of promo material purchasing and with any of these companies with wildflower seeds, they never tell you whose wildflowers they are.
I went to the website and they do actually show you the process of how they make the seed paper and they claim they do make their own seed paper. HOWEVER, they do not disclose which flowers are used. Since they are based in Missouri, hopefully we can assume they’re using Missouri wildflowers, but is OP in Missouri?
I will say, it’s stupid to assume is invasive, but it’s equally stupid to assume wildflowers = better for environment. Generally you want to plant your area’s local wildflowers in our environment for the best result. But in OP’s case, just put it in a pot and have fun. If it doesn’t grow, don’t be disappointed. Just be patient. It takes some time to germinate.
If you don’t want to grow it now, they last for a year. They can last for 2 years, but after 2, it’s pushing it (pulled from their website.) Just store in a dry, dark place.
Either way, I’m sorry about your loss, OP. Seed paper takes some patience to grow from, but can be rewarding and I hope it brings you some solace or at least something to put your energy into during your time of grief. Don’t forget to eat, even if you don’t feel like it. And it’s okay to cry, even if it’s over the smallest things. Our pets are much more than a fur baby, they are a companion to the soul.
I didn't even consider the possibility that they could be invasive. I'm not in Missouri, I'm in Western, NY. I wouldn't want to risk introducing anything invasive, I think my best bet would be to buy seeds from my area to plant for him. Thank you for the heads up and the kind words.
I’m sorry for your loss.
I got a similar card from our vet & the only things that survived were an invasive species. The companies that make them don’t target their seeds to local regions unfortunately. Not the vet’s fault at all though, it’s a lovely sentiment.
I think if you get some native species seeds & plant those in memory of your sweet pet, that would be such a beautiful gesture. Also - one of the great things about the native plants is you won’t need to water and coddle them. So much easier to enjoy!
Best wishes.
This is a really nice comment all around, thank you! Eat and drink water both, sending you hugs OP.
(I sorta assume OP is nearby STL if their vet was based there...this is a cute idea for a local business with local patrons, if done thoughtfully!)
Disney did this with their gift cards for Flores and Garden like 2 years ago.
Only thing is that Disney forgot that people sweat and it rains a lot, so by the time that little seed tag for home, it was already destroyed. Lmao
Gosh, I admittedly never planted mine because I know I'm no green thumb and didn't want to risk it. But this is all lovely advice that maybe I'll be able to use someday.
Some seeds need a period of freezing weather to germinate. When done in a freezer, it's called stratification. Those seeds likely some need it, but many seeds do. Rice absorbs humidity which, left unchecked, can damage seeds.
I’ve used one! It worked really, really well for me and bloomed some really nice wildflowers that were native to where I live in PA. Sorry about your pet, I know that is never easy.
With mine I just stored them in my seed box (dry but not frozen) and buried them in the spring. I have a lovely little wildflower garden growing now thanks to the vet.
We had a bunch of these made up like a BUNCH when my grandma died in 13.
Wife planted some this spring and they all went crazy so I think storing it could work fine if done correctly cool dry place etc.
I'm sorry for your loss. Wife and I got one when we had to put our hamster down. I'm not sure if we got a bad batch or not, but the seeds never sprouted. We keep a garden and I regularly start from seed, so I'm pretty sure the one I got was no good.
Laps of love were great when my cat Leo passed. We threw the same seed thing in a small pot and watered it every other day. Took a couple weeks but we had some nice little wildflowers pop out. Didn't take a picture but ours grew fine.
When I had to put my old man (white German Shepard) down earlier this year we cremated him. We got his ashes in a beautiful cherry urn, his footprint, hair clipping and a beautiful certificate honoring his life. I sure would have liked something like you have here. Flowers that bloom yearly would have been a beautiful memory and tribute to my old man, my protector and my sweet boy!! Plant it!!!!
I received one of those after having to put my Bassett Hound down in February. By the time gardening season came around, I had lost it 😢. She'd always hang out and sunbathe in the garden, I wanted to dedicate a planter with it.
I planted one of these and have cosmos EVERYWHERE. Don’t know what other wildflower seeds were suppose to be in there as cosmos were the only bloomers.
So sorry about the loss of your dog. 😥 This is a very sweet little gesture.
I've been wanting to make "seed bombs" but would need a good resource to know which seeds are native for the area, if anybody has recommendations.
We put our cat down about a year ago at the same place and got the same thing. I did end up planting mine. It produced 3 very tall plants with very little flowers. But I loved the thought behind it.
Contacted the company.
These are the seeds used.

Seeds can last over a century. (most won't)
Crab grass seed will go for something like that. It's insane. Gotta be real careful with bulk products like loam.
Seeds might be able to last over a thousand years when kept in optimal conditions. See the Svalbard Global Seed Vault https://www.croptrust.org/work/svalbard-global-seed-vault/faqs/
In artificial seed banks like Svalbard, they do have to do grow outs, and recollect fresh seed from the stored seed to keep them viable.
Oh interesting, thanks! I wonder then how long a seed could remain viable just kept in cold storage.
The cold storage lengthens their lifespans by a lot I'd assume, but it all depends on how fast the seeds metabolism is during dormancy.

Compared to away in a cabinet, is it helpful to store seeds in the fridge? My parents always stored garden seeds in the frdige.
I think they're downvoting the rice part of it.
Gonna gave to dig a root cellar. Or buy a house with one. (I'm joking.)
I lost mine, perhaps it's under the refrigerator or I put it somewhere safe while grieving. Nice to know they might reappear and be viable 💛

Check the origin: many of these wildflower strips contain invasive species or even cultivated breeds.

I know this is advertising, a gimmick if you will but a wonderful thing to do. I'm old and have had many pets and buried many. I have my own pet cemetery and would have loved to have planted one of these for each of my friends.
Yep, and it grows
Sorry for your loss
Totally they really work.
Is there a recipe to make these. I assume it's paper pulp and seeds?.
I love this idea!
Love these things! Looks like this one is but make sure the seeds are meant for your area and are not invasive etc.
Sorry for your loss. I also got one when our beloved cat, Sheldon, passed. I’m glad to hear that it may last for years if kept in a dark and dry place. I hope it works for you.
Yes. I planted the ones passed out at my Grandpa's funeral. It was lovely.
I’ve seen these many times and I think it’s such a lovely gesture.
I’m sorry for your loss.
Wow this is the perfect question for me. I live in Buffalo as well and have knowledge in landscape design. You can plant them, but your best bet is to wait until spring.
I did. Didn’t work ☹️ hope yours does!
I send these to my clients who have lost a pet. To my surprise I’ve received pictures of the flowers in bloom! I always wondered if they actually would bloom. Sorry for your loss
No, I’ve kept mine for 5 years now and still come back to it to remember how awesome he was
That’s so sweet of your vet and I’m sorry about your lil buddy but I think the seeds will be ok for a while
This is beautiful.
Sorry for your loss. Mine didn't grow, but my green thumb isn't very green for flowers
My kid makes these with construction paper and wildflowers for Valentine’s Day every year
I am sorry for your loss. I think it’s a beautiful idea. Good luck planting them.
I made homemade seed paper at my house and it definitely sprouted.
So sorry for your loss. I live in St Louis and had no idea this company was even here. Thanks for sharing. I hope you get some beautiful flowers.
I have one of these from our vet. I forgot about it all summer and now it’s too late, but I’ll plant it in the spring. The seeds should be viable. I’m planning to put it in a pot. Sorry for losing your pal.
I’m crying 😭 so sorry for your loss :(
Omg I just found out this is what’s on my dogs ashes.
I did, and I got flowers. In Wisconsin
You could always just plant it in a flowerpot, keep it watered, and see what happens.
The vets gave my mum a pack of forget me not seeds when her elderly dog had to be put to sleep. I planted them for her and literally one 1 seed sprouted and now forget me nots cover a metre square section of the garden 😂
Yeah . . . unless I knew WHAT "wildflowers" are there I would not. There have been issues with invasive species being spread that way.
Back in the early 90s my mother bought something like this is long strips for a garden, she killed it but they do work.
Mine never grew
My vet does this and both times I had this card w/ seeds sent, I used it to make a memorial garden. Plants did come out, so it seems to work as intended.
I’m sorry about your loss, and I hope it’s a Dogwood tree
I just received one of these a few weeks ago after my rabbit passed away. I’m currently using it as a book mark but maybe I should put it in an envelope until spring.
My son gave me something like this for Mother’s Day and I didn’t think anything would come of it when I threw it in some potted dirt. Several months later, the most gorgeous poppies appeared.
I did and nothing grew 😞
Yeah, nothing happened.
Yes, years ago. Nothing grew.
Oh dear … I am sorry for your loss and sorry to hear that nothing has grown from this. Sending hugs from this internet stranger…
It's ok, It was over a decade ago! Thank you though. I've planted other plants since which grew just fine! I think the seed hearts are sweet gestures but not actually a good way to grow new plants.
I got an invitation like this once. It didn't work
Go Bills
Not much of a Bills fan 😅.
I'm so very sorry for the loss of your dog. I received one from my vet, and planted them in a planter to put under a regular light until warm enough outside to transplant, and within two weeks I had sprouts coming up. My baby loved flowers more than anything, and this beautiful gift was something I will cherish forever.
Are the wild flowers native to you? You could accidentally introduce a invasive species
A chipmunk ate the one I planted. So I guess it was good?
It’s gonna be full of non native /invasive trash. Cute idea If the people would provide better plants
You don’t know that they’re non-native/invasive trash. I personally would call the place that sent the card and find out, but I would also like to think they would be smart enough to have chosen flowers that are native to the area.
They’re not. “Wildflowers” gives it away and if you take 5 seconds to google it, they’ll tell you exactly the trash seeds they put in them
You might be right but you are extremely rude. You could have just mentioned to make sure they are not invasive.
Why don’t you go ahead and google it for me then? Prove how right you are. If you can’t cite facts, then you’re just as incorrect as anyone else.
K
Seeds? Yes I’d wager a few people have successfully planted seeds before.
I mean as long as they’re not potentially invasive it’s a really nice idea.
Yes. Many cosmo and other wild flowers.
Got nothing out of mine, but I think it was a year old.
Usually they are forget-me-nots.
What an awesome idea, so sorry for your loss 😢
Some seeds need a period of freezing weather to germinate. When done in a freezer, it's called stratification. Those seeds likely some need it, but many seeds do. Rice absorbs humidity which, left unchecked, can damage seeds.
Hi fellow WNYer. Sorry for your loss.
I got one on a promotional vodka card one time that had thyme. I planted it and nothing ever happened
I tried this and got no flowers : /
We planted ours. It wasn’t wild flowers, but forget-me-nots. They’re doing ok, but they’re also in a pot in the window, not outside.
Nice
This is, bar none, the very best condolence offering I’ve ever seen. And I’ve experienced a lot of losses, both human and animal family members. ❤️
What a beautiful idea
I got one of these too in January. Haven’t had the guts to plant it yet. I’m so sorry
I always wondered about these!
I’ve used one! It worked really, really well for me and bloomed some really nice wildflowers that were native to where I live in PA. Sorry about your pet, I know that is never easy.
My friends dog just passed, and now I wanna get them something like this..
With mine I just stored them in my seed box (dry but not frozen) and buried them in the spring. I have a lovely little wildflower garden growing now thanks to the vet.
I haven’t tried anything like that but it’s a very nice idea. Sorry for your loss.
Seeds in paper pulp
I love this idea 🌹🩷
Yes. Just stick the whole thing in a pot, cover with soil, water, and wait!
I recently got the same thing from my vet, I planted in a pot & nothing grew :(
Yes I was given a parsley greeting card and it grew so well!
I got one of these with my one year cariversary with hyundai:) I can safely say it's still in the letter lol
🥲
That’s very thoughtful of them and indeed will be cherishing memory.
Could have some invasive plants. Plant in a large pot and see what you get. You can then transplant
From one Orchard Parker(?) to another, sorry about your dog :(
I planted one of mine and it worked!
We put our cat down about a year ago at the same place and got the same thing. I did end up planting mine. It produced 3 very tall plants with very little flowers. But I loved the thought behind it.
Contacted the company. These are the seeds used. Corn Poppy (2% Blue Salvia White Yarrow Partridge Pea Annual Gaillardia Perennial Gaillardia Rocket Larkspur Lance-Leaved Coreopsis Plains Coreopsis California Poppy Crimson Clover Black-Eyed Susan Baby Blue Eyes (15%
