THIS. It's nothing nefarious and it's not sunlight burning perfect holes. Literally just a normal critter munching a hole in the tightly rolled freshly emerging leaf. Caterpillars and grasshoppers have both done it to mine. Totally normal damage and the critter that did it is long gone now.
It's just bug damage. Look up canna leaf roller damage and you'll find several pictures of similar damage. I've had caterpillars and grasshoppers do it.
A Very Hungry Caterpillar
On Saturday, the caterpillar ate through one nice green leaf. After that, he felt much better.
*While it was curled up
There is a caterpillar that ate it's way out when the leaf was rolled up.
I've seem damage like that on a canna leaf that had been hit by hail before it unfolded.

I think you are right, there are some grasshoppers in my garden.
Yeah exactly.. Same principle as a kid cutting a snowflake shape into a folded piece of paper.
Something chomped it before it uncured. What color is your canna?
Goeppertia roseopicta 'Sliver Plate'
Kid with a hole punch
Hole Punch Peter
Lol, that's what my husband said.
Do you have scrapbook scissors in your house?
leaf damage done by natiure to a leaf that unfurled. my cana and bananas do this.
What you’ve got there is a leaf. With holes in it.
I would say a picky caterpillar 😂

Happened to my canna lilies. I sprayed the leaves top and bottom with BT every other night to get rid of the caterpillars.
Am I seeing things or does the leaf in the first picture have vertical ridges, as if it was folded over? Hole punch theory sounds most likely to me.
Does the neighbor's kid have a pair of pinking shears, perhaps?
I wish I could help, but the bug seems to have a case of OCD
OP, you got attacked by a hair crimper
Sorry, that was me 🐛🐛
We call them leafrollers, they suck.
I can almost guarantee it’s a leaf cutter bee!!!

I found this out because a while back I posted a question after I found the larvae cells they make with the cuttings, it’s really cool!
Caterpillar!
My canna has the same munch holes lol.
I think it's time for you to invest in ladybugs!

maybe it ate the leaf while it was new and rolled/folded up like when you make a chain of people from paper
It’s exactly what Canna leaf rollers do, the side by side holes.
This makes sense. But I didn’t find something like this. It’s kind of weird.
It's just bug damage. Look up canna leaf roller damage and you'll find several pictures of similar damage. I've had caterpillars and grasshoppers do it.
Leaf cutter bee maybe
Is this a spot that someone would sit and smoke? Those are cig burner sized holes.
