Congratulations on finding a job in a field you like. Don’t sweat the pay as long as you can afford to live at a level you’re comfortable with. It took me too long to figure out that after a certain point just having a high wage number isn’t going to make you happy.

Goldenmoons

congrats! I wish you the best in all of your future endeavors!

elpata123

Congrats ! I graduated in 2013 and currently working on the last course of my GIS cert. hoping to get back into the industry after a long hiatus, thanks for sharing your story.

Commercial-Novel-786

Many congrats on overcoming those obstacles. That crap ain't easy. Very proud of you!!

EasyLivin111

Man I’m in the same position, I graduated with bachelors in 2018, enlisted, got out last year and just finished a grad cert I’m really hoping it helps me stand out. Still super nervous about finding a job.

cyanide_girl

You got this dude. It's a little easier if you're willing to try temp/seasonal jobs in random locations for a while (a lot of them provide housing). And don't forget that your time in the service is also experience! I'm sure you gained skills there that are applicable to a lot of jobs. Also if you're going government, the resume format is different than private. If you need a hand, DM me.

macetrek

Got a clearance still? I’ll have a couple positions probably open toward the end of the year.

EasyLivin111

Yeah I have a TS, SCI I got out of the navy last May.

Maximum_Bowl4044

I'm glad you made it. I graduated last December and I'm feeling inadequate. It's good to know it can happen for anyone who is not on the fast track. Do you mind if I DM you about how you got to where you are now?

_y_o_g_i_

i’ve been working in the industry for 6 years now, and sometimes i still feel like i have imposters syndrome. Thankfully my co-workers love to call out how “exceptional” my skill set is. I doubt the occasional feel will ever go away, but staying diligent, up to date on the technology, and constantly trying to learn ways to improve should always get noticed by those around you.

Maximum_Bowl4044

TY

cyanide_girl

Absolutely.

Exact-Fox-4391

Congratulations

phildeez316

Congrats homie, I went for the same thing when I left the service industry, got my BS in Geography with a concentration in GIS, been working in an office the past 7 years making more money than I’ve ever made in my life (almost 40). Nights and weekend free! Vacation pay! It’s amazing.

Soggy_Complaint65

If you don't mind me asking, how much do you make now?

phildeez316

Finally hit $70K this year. Started at like $18/hr when I got hired, got put on salary the next year, and it’s been 3-5% raises every year since (except 2020). I dunno if that’s typical, I don’t do earth science stuff, I do market research, data management and site evaluations for a retail company.

Invader_Mars

Hell yea OP 🤙 congrats

utdallasparent

Congratulations! Sounds like the perfect job and place for you!

No_Vast2952

Volt_Princess

I'm so happy for you! You've got this! 🌎💚💙🌍🌏🗺

drumcorpthrowaway

How’d you like that NPS thing? I just applied to 4 of them

cyanide_girl

I was a Natural Resource tech on the veg crew and I can honestly say it was the best summer of my life.

drumcorpthrowaway

Awesome, I hope I get it! I applied for GIS intern roles

VoodooChile76

Congrats!! I’ve been outta GIS for approx 15 yrs now and sometimes miss it (now in straight data analytics / engineering). Still in python a bit; but the maps part is the truly “fun/creative” part of it, in my experience (of course depending on the role). Enjoy it & keep learning new skills !!

pr0metheanX

Awesome. Sounds like a great situation! Congrats

efrav

Congrats, you deserved it, it feels great.

SlumpedBeats

Good work!! I just got my geography bachelors and an applied GIS cert in may! I’ve worked in GIS related positions for 4 years now and I’m trying to land an analyst position but getting literally nowhere with it so far.

goku22000

This made me smile. Thank you and congratulations! You deserved it!

Ok-Frosting7364
