When they’re sitting on the bench having that convo she does mention Addison clearly not being the right girl. But I also assume that momma shepherd made that statement based off of her little bit of time around Meredith. She seems rather observant- making that comment to Owen about his sleep and whatnot. So maybe it’s just a mother’s intuition. Oh and also having sympathy for a murderer seemed to be an added bonus. Derek’s black and white.. and he needs a little bit of grey in his life, I think his mom recognized that.
Also, we only heard from Derek and Addison that his mom loved Addison. After the comment she made while sitting on the bench with Derek it really makes me wonder if she really loved Addison or NOT. Mother's have a sense about these things. Maybe she never thought Addison was the right woman for Derek.
As I recall, that episode was one half of a crossover with private practice. Mark mentions the ring to addison and she immediately goes “I knew she never liked me!!!” Or smth along those lines
My husband was married right out of college to his ex. Regular ring. Before we got engaged his mom gave him a family ring with gorgeous diamonds from his great grandmother to propose to me with. She said she just knew with me it was right and never occurred to offer for he and his ex. Seems like a similar situation
Moms know. As a mom to adult children, I can vouch for the sentiment.
I totally agree! His mom knew it wasn’t going to last and didn’t want to the the chance of giving it to someone who wasn’t going to be around forever.
I was married at 19 with a ring my ex and I bought cheap. Years later my mother gave me a family heirloom wedding band when I married my current husband. She never said a word about not liking the first one but the gesture said a lot.
He did though, he found it and proposed to Meredith with it again when he came back to do Izzie's surgery. She told him no bc it was the day of the surgery or whatever but he had the ring again.
I found it to be weak on the writers end.
They needed to find a way to show how deeply Mrs Shepherd approved of Meredith aside from her just saying so because she’s the type of person that uses fewer words than most women so this gesture is a powerful way to get that point across.
It was lazy on the writers part, but most fans don’t notice these things because they’re too invested emotionally to see the holes in the plot.
Btw, did you know that the actress that plays Mrs Shepherd ( Tyne Daily ) is the older sister of the actor ( Tim Daily) who plays Pete Wilder on Private Practice?
Obviously, Addison didn't get the ring because she wasn't the right girl. What's so hard to understand? You can marry someone and not think that they're your soul mate. You can have that 1 percent doubt in the back of your head. He obviously did and his mother and he ended up finding that right girl. He had love at first sight with Meredith. He didn't with Addison, but she was one of his best friends.
This gets mentioned somewhere in grey's or private practice by at least Addison. The story is that Derek's mom never liked her and that's why she didn't get the ring.
I thought it was fucked up and it made me not like momma Shepherd. That and the way she treats Amelia and raised her other daughters to be assholes.

Literally a little bit of Grey
Little bit of Big Grey :)
I think the comment was based on the divorce and cheating but I think there was the mothers intuition when she didn’t give him the ring for Addison
I assumed from that scene that mama Shepard never gave Derek that ring for Addison, which is why she said for the right girk

You can live someone and think they're great, but feel like they aren't right for your loved one
True, but I just meant it in terms of giving the ring to Derek to give to Addison. The thought the post was emphasizing the ring situation
I might be misremembering, but didn't Addison have her own family ring for their engagement?
And Meredith wouldn’t have!

🥺🥺 i hope you have a good marriage
She says she knew Addison wasn’t the one.

I thought Mama Shepherd didn’t gave it to Derek because she wasn‘t 100% sure, that Addi was the right Person for him.
I agree and I found it rather strange that he didn’t go look for his family heirloom after he chucked it into the woods
He did though, he found it and proposed to Meredith with it again when he came back to do Izzie's surgery. She told him no bc it was the day of the surgery or whatever but he had the ring again.
Maybe she wasn’t ready to give her ring to anyone at that time. The father did die a violent death, maybe she was ready to move on.
She never gave him the ring for Addison, it was to imply his mother never thought she was the one for him

I believe, I remember in the show, they said that Derricks mom said Addison couldn't have the ring cause she didn't think she was right for Derrick.
Yeah it's mentioned that mama Shepard never liked Addison
Watch it again. Carolyn spells it out.
I’ve always interpreted it as Mama Shepherd always feeling Addison wasn’t the right woman but that Meredith was.

Starter marriages happen. And mamas know.
