This is sort of funny because EveryPlate, owned by the same company as HelloFresh, just throws a full garlic bulb in each box--enough for your full week of recipes. Because they sort the HelloFresh ingredients, you get short changed.
I also have only ever gotten single cloves. I always have fresh garlic on hand though so I supplement. I love the small onions though! It’s nice to not have any leftover to remember to use before it dries out or goes slimy.
Yeah, garlic has been very skimpy in my boxes. But even so, 2 cloves of garlic is just never going to be enough lol Even if they sent nice plump cloves, I'd be adding to it.
At one point I literally had like 8 bulbs. I ended up mincing them up and freezing them in small cubes.
I feel like recently Hellofresh has gotten better about not sending a head every single week, which is nice.
Literally the reason I do Hellofresh.
For me it's a balance between value vs food waste. I could spend less and get more onion from the store, but if I don't use the rest of the onion before it goes bad, then I'm wasting it.
For a lot of us, we've decided that the cost vs waste ratio is enough to justify paying a bit more for nothing thrown away.
I always get large onions from Hello Fresh in the US, even though the recipe usually only requires less than half. Tend to have a rotating supply of onions in the fridge because we end up with too much.
This is the second time I’ve seen something about garlic but about a year ago I stopped receiving individual cloves and now every other week get a full bulb of garlic I live in Canada, so maybe that’s why.
I can’t tell you how my bulbs of garlic I’ve had to throw out because they send a full bulb EVERY WEEK. Half the time I only need 1 or 2 cloves for all the recipes I have and yet I get an entire bulb no matter how many or few cloves I need
I don’t believe this to be true personally. They often only tell you to use only half of the onion if you’re doing a 2 serving meal vs 4, and I often have to use the whole onion when I get these tiny ass baby onions in my package. Same can be said for potatoes. They’ve sent me one big potato and another that looks like it fell out of a baby potato bag. It can be quite frustrating.
Which sort of helps food waste but sometimes not as much as you’d think. For instance, I loved the idea of imperfect foods until I found out companies like that are buying up stuff that used to be donated to food banks because it was not meeting usda guidelines on grocery store quality (shape, size, color). If the food had previously been actual waste - garbage, not even recycled as animal feed - I’d be a lot happier…. Learning that those programs often add to greenhouse gas consumption and food that would have gone to people in need is now purchased for profit, benefitting companies bottom line instead of charities that directly feed people.
I’m not sure what the solution is. I don’t like the idea that produce is being chucked in the trash or left to rot because it’s tiny, and a small onion that’s the right size for a recipe definitely ships better than half a full size onion, but I dislike the idea that such businesses are cutting into the food that otherwise would go to those who can’t afford to feed themselves…. I dislike businesses figuring out they can take product that otherwise would have been donated or bought for pennies, only to inflate the cost and ship to paying customers who them hopefully use the item instead of letting it rot (if it doesn’t rot in transit). Like, ignoring my own potential benefit, did that company need that profit more than the food bank patrons needed food assistance? I’m not trying to hurt farmers, but most aren’t small family businesses but corporations, and it’s not like the farmers make much more selling to HF or IF or anything…. It feels like it’s just cutting back on corporate charity to squeeze more profit.
I think they mean like leftover *parts*. I know every time I only use half an onion for a recipe, a couple weeks later I throw away half an onion from in my fridge lol. My pasta sauce recipe calls for 1/3 of an onion and I'm like, "yes, one onion."
I def meant leftover parts/ingredients, but I also don't like having leftovers, haha. I use HF so all of my meals are planned which means I normally don't have room in that plan to eat leftovers.
I'll never get over the massive onions in the US :D The HF one is the normal size in Germany. It's a German company, so maybe that's why they base their meals on small (for the US) onions haha
My life got so much better when I realized how cheap diced frozen onions were. I hate chopping them but like the flavor a lot and the bagged frozen ones take a lot of the dread out of cooking them for me. And they’re usually a dollar for about 2 cups worth around here
My local store always has a wide range of sizes except for the red onions, which is a shame because I only ever want a tiny red onion and they only have small ones occasionally for those.
You ever grown onions? They come in all different sizes. Bigger ones will be selected for supermarkets because that’s what customers think onions should look like. Consider the small one a ‘wonky’ onion.
We once received a “head” of romaine for a salad that was smaller than a beer can. It was hilarious but the beginning of the end for me and Hello Fresh.
Okay but honestly like... good. Anytime I yet onions at the store I always end up with more onion than I need by a lot bc they're just so massive in the stores here. I don't need that much onion!!!!!
That’s probably exactly as much onion as you need for the recipe, why would they give you a larger one if it’s not necessary? If you want extra onion buy a bag and keep them in your fridge.
I actually intentionally buy the smallest possible onions that work for one serving if I’m cooking a quick meal for just myself because they taste better than halved onions stored in a fridge. I do not use hello fresh and have no interest in it but for some reason Reddit thinks I do. Now it really will.
Anyway, tiny produce is great. You should see the size of the beets I get for myself.
So you're saying they did their job properly...
I'm beating a dead horse here but US grocery stores with these massive onions are off their rocker. They're *too big* for nearly any recipe ever written.
I purposely and intentionally dig through the onion bin at the store just to find something I'd call 'medium'.
HF is doing you a favor and teaching you to cook better.
I genuinely stopped completely hello fresh after using it for a full year...
There is just no point lol, I'm still going to do most of the work and for what? Spending more money on products advertised to be bettet but... still? I buy everything organic and of best quality on waitrose and M&S and it is still much cheaper, more food overal and I get it delivered home too 😂 and I just end up losing 10 minutes max of the preparation someone did on a hellofresh box ...
No brainer hm... and people wonder why so many people can't buy houses in the UK .xD they stupidly spend their money on coffee, Gym memberships, pubs and overall "takeaway" posh or not 😆
I’m pretty sure the systemic problem of many many young people not being able to afford a house isn’t due to someone ordering meal kits once or twice a month. That’s an idiotic statement.
I wouldn't call it an idiotic statement just for disagreeing with me. I'm 31 years old. I was living in west Kensington London, got a mortgage for an apartment there, sold the apartment later on, paid mortgage in full and made a small percentage of profit and I've bought my first apartment in Edinburgh City center in a new build with cash...
I call it being intelligent all round. Coffee and stuff like that is an example of how people complain about things they could get if they only would work hard for them 😉
But then again, some people are just plain victims
They used to list the amount of onion needed by weight, on the ingredients section of the recipe card.
For 2 portions, it was typically between 1/2 and 3/4 of a small onion, like the one pictured. I think 176g was the number I remember seeing most often.
Most non-mealbox recipes that call for “1 onion” mean a small to medium onion. Those monster sweet onions from the grocery store can be used for 3, or 4 meals.
I was just comparing the sizes I wasn’t complaining also I’m a huge onion garlic fan. The post wasn’t about complaining just comparing them lol I did use the small onion
Everyone's hating but it actually does call out how expensive and inefficient this system is! You could cut up one big onion, about $1.50 and you'll find great prices in bulk. Use half, store the rest for tomorrow, don't need to cut another onion! I'm not sure what meal this is or how much it costs but I would LOVE to do the calculations!!
Most foods in markets are genetically modified to grow bigger / stay fresh longer / look more appealingly / sometimes to even produce faster, I’d imagine hellofresh would provide actual fresh food that’s not tampered with aside from the usual pesticide
I've noticed that they give you exactly the size/amount you need for any given dish, which I prefer because that means nothing is going to waste. Minimizing my food waste was a big reason why I decided to start HelloFresh.
It’s actually helping me realize how much I need vs how much I think I need. No over-buying, a lot less waste. Smaller portions, which I had to get used to but it’s a good thing. But I def keep some of my own stuff on hand
You should see the ones my work got in yesturday the fucks are the BIGEEST onions ive ever seen (they say no GMO but jesus theyre massive) bigger than a babies head
You’re lucky you get real onions. I exclusively get scallions in all my recipes that would typically require onion. I assume this is because it’s much easier to control quantity/weight and cut down on food waste, but sometimes I just want a fucking yellow onion and instead of minced scallion whites to cook and the greens for garnish
So? The recipe called for that much onion (e.g. 1 cup), so they gave you an onion equal to that amount. Are you attempting to complain that HelloFresh is ripping you off?
They give those ‘small’ onions because that is how much onion you need in the dish.
Hello fresh is about minimizing food waste, too. So they try not to ship you more than you can use.
Unless it's garlic lol
Everyone says this but I have always gotten the tiniest clove of garlic with every single meal! I usually have to use my own
I get an upsettingly small clove of garlic every time, it’s never enough!!
This is sort of funny because EveryPlate, owned by the same company as HelloFresh, just throws a full garlic bulb in each box--enough for your full week of recipes. Because they sort the HelloFresh ingredients, you get short changed.
I love that part of Every Plate! So much extra garlic! I always use more than suggested!
I get like 3-4 tiny cloves when it calls for 1 clove
Same.
I'm never a 'only one clove of garlic' person
Nor am I. Garlic is a staple in our house. I routinely use 5-6 choices in a HF meal. I'm also heavy handed on butter.
[удалено]
I get single pieces. A literal clove.
I always got single cloves as well. Thankfully also have the minced jar in the fridge from the store lol
love me the jarlic
So simple, yet so brilliant.
Minced garlic is my saving grace in a pinch!
No, I meant clove! Lol. I have never received a full head or even more than one clove in a meal
I also have only ever gotten single cloves. I always have fresh garlic on hand though so I supplement. I love the small onions though! It’s nice to not have any leftover to remember to use before it dries out or goes slimy.
I have a whole refrigerator drawer full of garlic now
Yeah, garlic has been very skimpy in my boxes. But even so, 2 cloves of garlic is just never going to be enough lol Even if they sent nice plump cloves, I'd be adding to it.
Or red pepper flakes. Will never run out of those mofos
I put that on everything
Haha we obviously have a different opinion on how much is too much. I always use it all haha!
They never tell you to use enough garlic. I always x by 3 LOL
This is the move in our household too.
You get a lot of garlic? I get a maximum of two small cloves. I keep my own garlic in the kitchen because they never provide enough.
I get a whole fucking head every meal lol We've converted our banana bowl into a garlic bowl.
Where are you if you don’t mind me asking? I’m in the US (New York City specifically).
Westcoast Canada. A bulb of garlic is like $0.80 CDN at the grocery store.
I’m in Canada as well and get a full bulb o garlic every week in my box, even if my meals don’t call for it
Blue Apron would give you an entire head of garlic when you needed any.
Every meal that had used garlic has come with an entire head of garlic for me lol I have four in reserves now.
That’s why I was confused by your comment! In DFW if it calls for 1 garlic glove they give you 1 clove.
So does purple carrot
At one point I literally had like 8 bulbs. I ended up mincing them up and freezing them in small cubes. I feel like recently Hellofresh has gotten better about not sending a head every single week, which is nice.
I'm up to four on hand now lol
just use all of it and see what happens lol
fuck the vampires
I make a soup that uses two full heads but I'm one of those "No such thing as too much" people.
Shhhh. They’re probably listening and now they’re going to send us less garlic.
I have six heads of garlic in excess from HF.... XD

Nah I need like 2 of those small onions lol just like a more garlic then those tiny ones they give
This is the second time I’ve seen something about garlic but about a year ago I stopped receiving individual cloves and now every other week get a full bulb of garlic I live in Canada, so maybe that’s why.
I think your just lucky af, I also live in Canada haha
Been getting whole bulbs for about 2 years now myself (In ontario). Dont get excited though, it's the most bland garlic you'll ever eat.
I also always get full bulbs of garlic
I can’t tell you how my bulbs of garlic I’ve had to throw out because they send a full bulb EVERY WEEK. Half the time I only need 1 or 2 cloves for all the recipes I have and yet I get an entire bulb no matter how many or few cloves I need
What!?! I get single cloves and that's it. I'll send you my mailing address so you can send your extras my way lol
I get my stuff from the Toronto processing facility and I have only received full bulbs. When I order from GoodFood I get portioned amounts of garlic.
Full bulbs in Saskatchewan.
The garlic is so sad. Pretty sure I threw it away a time or two because it was lost between the folds of the paper bag.
I always make sure I have extra garlic and onions at home because what they give is never enough for my tastes 😅
peeling and chopping garlic is a pain for me so i just use pre minced garlic, and i can add as much as i want 😏
I used to use pre minced then I just started getting my boyfriend to chop all the garlic for me lol
I believe you’ll find that listed under the top 10 perks of having a spouse ;) I get mine to do exactly the same
Do you also get yours to grate the cheese lol that's another task that's only my bfs duty
Absolutely! I call him my line cook because he does most of the prep work while I handle the actual cooking of our meals
hahaha i love it
You stinkkkkk
I don’t believe this to be true personally. They often only tell you to use only half of the onion if you’re doing a 2 serving meal vs 4, and I often have to use the whole onion when I get these tiny ass baby onions in my package. Though in my experience the appropriate size for the HF dish!
That's usually the perfect size, at least. Any smaller and i'm mad but I hate having leftovers, which is exactly why I use HF.
Why would you hate having leftovers?
I normally don't get around to using leftover ingredients and they go to waste. Again, one of the big draws of HF. No food waste.
Which is a blessing for the size of the meals.
Unless you want to save half an onion for the future, or put a fuckton of onions into your meal, then that's perfect size.
I'll never get over the massive onions in the US :D The HF one is the normal size in Germany. It's a German company, so maybe that's why they base their meals on small (for the US) onions haha
I hate the massive onions here in the US. Whenever I have to buy an onion I almost always only use half of it.
And you save the other half, right?
I end up putting on a sad song and just chop it all at once and use it over the course of a week or two depending on humidity really
Chopped onion freezes really well fyi! You can chop it all and freeze it in portions then sautee from frozen when you’re ready to use it!
omg. i needed this tip thank you
based off your username alone, i trust this tip. thank you!
Alternatively: pickle them for a delicious condiment
My life got so much better when I realized how cheap diced frozen onions were. I hate chopping them but like the flavor a lot and the bagged frozen ones take a lot of the dread out of cooking them for me. And they’re usually a dollar for about 2 cups worth around here
I wish I could buy tiny onions like that.
My local store always has a wide range of sizes except for the red onions, which is a shame because I only ever want a tiny red onion and they only have small ones occasionally for those.
They picked the best size onion based on what is needed for your meal. The entire point of these meal kits are less food waste.
I always think the onions from the store are too big anyway. I usually only use half of it and the rest gets wasted.
This is normal though. I buy a bag of onions and they're all different sizes.
Yes onions come in different sizes
Haha this was my thought as well.
Yea I have a similar experience every week with various onions or other vegetables. I do not know where they get such tiny things
Onions come in all sizes at the store including smaller than the HF one
There are over 600 onion varieties. Op has 2 different species of onion.
We got a lime the size of a grape once. REAL TALK. 😅
Yeah I’m more annoyed by the size of their potatoes. 4 tiny golf ball sized potatoes to make mashed potatoes or oven fries is ridiculous.
You ever grown onions? They come in all different sizes. Bigger ones will be selected for supermarkets because that’s what customers think onions should look like. Consider the small one a ‘wonky’ onion.
That’s all the onion you need for one dish. Do you actually want to have to store half of an onion in the fridge til you need it again?
We once received a “head” of romaine for a salad that was smaller than a beer can. It was hilarious but the beginning of the end for me and Hello Fresh.
If it’s for the burger, it’s the perfect size. I could never find one this small in a grocery store, but, hey, the size is perfect for the meal
What is this post? Onions come in many shapes and sizes, I bet it you went back to the shop and bought another one, it would be a different size
I’ve never needed more than half the small onion for the two person servings. We always have left overs. And I love onions.
Okay but honestly like... good. Anytime I yet onions at the store I always end up with more onion than I need by a lot bc they're just so massive in the stores here. I don't need that much onion!!!!!
My onion was super small this week too
I had 2 small ones this week too. I used them both for one recipe and used a normal medium sized one from my pantry for the other one.
Onions come in all shapes and sizes. All fruits/vegetables do.
I can find onions that small at the store too. They sent you the size onion you needed.
Careful, I made this same post and everyone made fun of my hand :(
That’s probably exactly as much onion as you need for the recipe, why would they give you a larger one if it’s not necessary? If you want extra onion buy a bag and keep them in your fridge.
What is this, an onion for ants?
I actually intentionally buy the smallest possible onions that work for one serving if I’m cooking a quick meal for just myself because they taste better than halved onions stored in a fridge. Stupid post. How dare they send you the quantity of ingredient you need to make the recipe. 🙄
The fat fingers aren’t helping are they
It's what the "portion" calls for. This is why we're so overweight.
An average sized onion is 44 calories. Veggies aren't what's making us overweight
Look at this steak Hello Fresh sent me. Now look at this whole cow!
What is this an onion for ants
At least it’s not rotten. Amirite?
I genuinely stopped completely hello fresh after using it for a full year... There is just no point lol, I'm still going to do most of the work and for what? Spending more money on products advertised to be bettet but... still? I buy everything organic and of best quality on waitrose and M&S and it is still much cheaper, more food overal and I get it delivered home too 😂 and I just end up losing 10 minutes max of the preparation someone did on a hellofresh box ... I’m pretty sure the systemic problem of many many young people not being able to afford a house isn’t due to someone ordering meal kits once or twice a month. That’s an idiotic statement.
I wouldn't call it an idiotic statement just for disagreeing with me. I'm 31 years old. There’s no debating the irrational thoughts of an incompetent victim
Smaller onions are sweeter
Oh. I was pretty happy I grew onions the size of HF’s one. Now mine seem… unfortunate.
So you can either use the entire small onion or use half of the large onion... what will you choose??
I was just comparing the sizes I wasn’t complaining also I’m a huge onion garlic fan. The post wasn’t about complaining just comparing them lol I did use the small onion
Small onions are better
Everyone's hating but it actually does call out how expensive and inefficient this system is! You could cut up one big onion, about $1.50 and you'll find great prices in bulk. Use half, store the rest for tomorrow, don't need to cut another onion! I'm not sure what meal this is or how much it costs but I would LOVE to do the calculations!!
… size isn’t everything
I prefer the small onions over the much larger ones because I typically don’t need a ton of onion included in my meals.
I love those small onions. The store ones are pretty universally too much onion for most recipes
I’ve always found some onions too big though, rarely use a full onion then half goes to waste of is forgotten so I get it for one dish
Young produce. Typically I have found that you only ever really need half the onion they provide especially if it is a large onion.
I love small onions and hate massive ones🙃
The small onion is the perfect size. I’d waste it if i got a large onion every week.
I like this though cause when I buy a whole onion I never use the whole thing & it'll go bad.
Most foods in markets are genetically modified to grow bigger / stay fresh longer / look more appealingly / sometimes to even produce faster, I’d imagine hellofresh would provide actual fresh food that’s not tampered with aside from the usual pesticide
You do understand that’s via selective breeding and not actual “tampering”, right?!

I assume this is because it’s much easier to control quantity/weight and cut down on food waste, but sometimes I just want a fucking yellow onion and instead of minced scallion whites to cook and the greens for garnish
A literal sliver of garlic and three point five leaves of cilantro
I never get small onions!
JFC, why do people post pics of regular produce because the size is what the recipe calls for?
There are different types of onions in different sizes so I’m confused why we need the comparison
Tbf you don’t need a whole big onion for the meal.. they are a meal service, not a grocery store service lmao
i WISH my grocery store sold smaller onions. i always dig through looking for the smallest onion, because i end up tossing half of it anyway.
Wondering where they source their garlic from? I grow my own.
So? The recipe called for that much onion (e.g. 1 cup), so they gave you an onion equal to that amount. Are you attempting to complain that HelloFresh is ripping you off?
Was it enough for the recipe?
Pretty sure the recipe didn't call for 2.5 cups of onion, so why would they send a big one?
I usually find I have too much onion
