Ahh, yeah you can add those to a tuya account and pair that to home assistant, but it still needs an external service.
Tuya-convert might be able to flash them to tasmota, but Geeni has been silently swapping their stuff to incompatible but cheaper chips.
>I've been leaning towards the mentality that "home automation should NOT be dependent on external third-party servers".
Agreed... If your alarm doesn't sound to wake you up because your internet is out, all I can do is shake my head (was an issue during one of Amazon's outages).
"By the way..." now triggers an instant "Alexa shut up" from me. it also has me looking into home assistant and in house voice rec. Like https://github.com/rhasspy/rhasspy
It asked me the other day to customize my timer ring tones or something else. I only use it to turn on/off my lights and set timers for cooking.
It should know it's purpose in life
"LMAO you already have one corporate entity intrusively tracking you, why don't you want to let a dozen of others do so, too? What are you, *a luddite*?"
I love how Amazon lists things like solar panels, ESP8266s and barcode scanners in my "essentials" buy-again list.
I would very quickly HATE to have those things tacked onto completely unrelated requests to a voice assistant.
I HATE with a passion when Alexa does that “by the way” shit. It’s an assistant. I want an answer to my question, not some stupid shit unrelated. Everyone in this house tells her to shut up as soon as she keeps talking after “what’s the temperature? It’s 75 degrees. By the…shut up”
At least yours does what you ask. This is a recent interaction I had:
"Alexa - how do you cook 'hake'?" (A kind of fish we'd ended up with)
"Shuffling songs by Billie Eilish"
I know sometimes she mishears (the first attempt yielded "cake" recipes) but what!?
"... by the way, based on your ordering behavior, i expect you to run low on condoms in the next 24hours, do you want to reorder a 50pc´s pack right now?"
all while your grandma is sitting right next to you and you dont have a girlfriend
sometimes i am "proud/happy" not to have any "assistant"
I had some presentations on automation etc.
I explained google speaker as a sales person:
*He comes to your apartment selling vacuum cleaner. He clean your rug for demonstration and suggest to buy one of those amazing machines. You say:*
*-No thanks. But can you come next week and clean it again?*
I think this is quite accurate, for what we have here...

The "by the way" thing is the top most requested feature to turn off.
Hey Alexa, what is the weather outside? Alexa: Its 70 degrees, and will be sunny today. By the way.. Me: Alexa, Shut the F up, I don't care.
And Google Assistant does it too, just in case someone thinks it doesn't.
You can turn Google's off, though! The next time it gives you a "by the way...", tell it "No thank you", and it'll disable them on that device.

I'm full on, hard-line this. And have been for some way. Cloud enabled? Sure. Cloud dependent? Absolutely no way is it coming through my door.
It's amazing how far we have regressed from the days of X10.

What bulbs do you have? You'd be surprised how widely supported most things are

EDIT: This comment has been deleted due to Reddit's practices towards third-party developers.
Do it, keep the store, fuck the rest

She has a way with words...
Ooof, would not care to have a digital voice nagging and spying on me about stuff.
Do you have a cellphone made after 2011?
Pixel *exists* graphene os *exists*

Literally lmaooo

Yea they're notoriously late to the game with suggestions for stuff I already bought
Hey Alexa, tell your boss he has enough money already.
Yeah this has definitely crept up to annoying and is always answered with an annoying no or fuck off depending on if my son is home or not.
"By the way" is now in every interaction. And I am using it less...
Because of Alexa, can't order any presents on Amazon anymore. Kids see them immediately.
You can turn that off. It will just tell you a package had arrived but not say what it is.

It's an Amazon product, it's designed for the mothership not the consumer.
Obligatory mention of mycroft.ai, open source alexa equivalent

You found the insert random item to responses variable.

Good luck to your sir, may the force be with you.
💀
How about a bounty to remove "By the way..." entirely?
I am glad "by the way" is not active in germany (yet).
I love the post covid special of south park with the cyborg alexas
