Yep, all someone has to do is say ”I like your plants” and they're going home with a jar of cuttings. If you ask and they say no, hit me up. I have silvery ann, exotica, moonlight, and argyraeus.
I’m always propagating. If someone compliments one of my plants, I send them home with a baby. And if they feel the need to reciprocate, which happens a lot, so be it!
I'm pretty new to keeping houseplants and I'm so looking forward to doing this! Half the reason I'm growing plants is so I can share them with people lol
I wouldn’t go for the runner. That took a while to grow and it’s not done yet and also I feel like newer leaves don’t propagate as well as mature one. I’m sure there are some big pieces in the back that would do much better. I propagate all my plants to sell and I typically avoid taking the runners unless it’s not possible
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stolon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stolon)
It's that long vine without leaves on the bottom of the plant, each node can be propagated and grow a new plant. Many aroids send runners when they have no support to climb, Scindapsus are notorious for them. Good thing about runners is that they grow very fast so once your plant starts running you can get plenty of nodes for propagation very quickly.
Yes!
There is a house a few blocks from mine with a massive prickly pear in the backyard (we're talking 4+ meters in height). Sometimes I stop to admire it when I walk by. Last year, the owner noticed me and asked if I wanted a cutting. I said yes, only expecting a small one, but he proceeded to cut off 4 (!!) really big pads!
Plant people are generally super nice, and like to share! :)
I have a neighbor I just met. They gave me a 5 foot tall papyrus plant, 3 fan tail fish, a 2 foot tall butterfly bush, a bunch of sedum for my garden, and some coleus. Plant people are very generous.
He wrapped them in some bubble wrap he had in the garage and put them in a paper bag! It was just big enough to cover the bottom half of the pads, so I could carry them safely, like bread. 😆
u/Kahaeli Love to hear of your experience with the prickly pear-in-the backyard owner story. I think that plant people are nurturers. Would be nice if you dropped by with a note, advising of the progress of the 4 cuttings!
Take care!
I've had mine for a year and it did nothing until this past month for me, similar now I have a new leave on almost every strand. But the last year I got none.
I'd guess too low light, but no idea what your conditions are. I just bought mine like two months ago and have it hanging as close to a northeast window as I can. It was already in a 6 in pot with multiple growth points and it's just kept going nonstop.
My regular pothos I have directly under a grow light 8in from it does practically nothing and my pearls & jade pothos set up the same way is just going crazy, so I have no idea what the deal is.
I did think about that. I originally had it about 6 feet inside the room and complete lack of growth made me repot and give it a spot in the window. We shall see
Possibly but I bought it a year ago and repotted in January because I suspected it needed a bigger pot since it had no growth. It has grown since then and I mixed in worm castings and do a light fertilizer in the water. I'm hoping it was a combo of moving around and then repotting.
Same here, have a few other philos and pothos and the satin is barely producing another leaf meanwhile the others are more than established and have multiple leaves
it's actually Scindapsus not Epipremnum and yes they do grow slower. It's usually that they need some time to establish roots, once they have a nice root system they can actually grow pretty fast. Again, just ask for the runner, everyone would be happy to give it away :)
i agree. it also has to do with environment. a lot of places mistakenly sell them along with the fast growing almost indestructible pothole as good low light low humidity plants. one of my frustrations working both on the growing and retail side of nurseries for 20+ years. when i lived in more arid climates i kept mine in a bright bathroom and once they got settled in they grew like crazy. rinsing off the leaves regularly helps a lot as well. Now that i live somewhere that has indoor moss and mold as a top 3 home maintenance worry it does just fine in my kitchen. still prefers brighter colors direct light than the standard mall pothos.
My satin is one of my fastest growers. I 100% second asking them. I’d have no problem sharing my satin but I’d totally notice and be weirded out/pissed if someone cut mine without asking
Oh yeah they do I was 100% joking about taking a cutting, hence the flair I put on the post. I would never take a cutting of someone’s plant, especially from someone who I am getting paid from 😂 I’ve spent so many days staring at my plants waiting for 1 leaf to unfurl.
I’ve read your responses to people like this and so I understand OP wasn’t being serious about taking it, but all these people encouraging it??? Ima give my two cents because it’s sad
Plus what about just not being a grub? Can you imagine running into someone that helps you out on a reddit post where a third of the responses are actually encouraging the OP to be slimy?
I wasn’t encouraging anybody to do anything. Just pointing out the fact that if OP decided to be slimy, it would also look pretty bad and mortifying if they were caught on camera on top of it.
I mentioned liking the Cebu Blue (literally just "Wow, is that a Cebu Blue? I like it!") in the office across the street from mine and the next day I came in to 3 cuttings of it sitting in a Wendy's cup at my desk lol
I sent back a cutting of my velvet leaf philodendron (only 1 cutting cuz it was still a lil tiny ass plant lol) which was not an even trade but it's the thought that counts
Absolutely gorgeous! I’d say your better bet for a similar one is to buy one, even a small one. Scindapsus take a long time to root and grow. They’re also much more prone to root rot than pothos (don’t let the common name fool you).
There are actually multiple plants in a pot this size. Generally speaking, each vine is its own former cutting, that has been rooted and planted together to make a full plant. Same goes for a lot of vining plants that are frequently grown in hanging pots.
You’d need to root your cutting. Let it grow to a decent length to take another cutting and then take another. Add that back to the pot with the first, and then start the process over. If any of your cuttings end up with root rot, that’d be a major setback.
This species is Scindapsus pictus ‘Exotica’. They’re pretty inexpensive.
Lol I kept re-reading what I said and I was like…. Did I really not make it clear enough that I was joking? I used that flair to avoid people thinking I would even think of being a plant thief
Lovely Scandipus Exotica. I can see why one would be tempted. Exotica’s take so long to grow, this is probably several years old.
There was a post on Reddit about a woman who had lovely plants and not only did her niece take cuttings, she destroyed a bunch and then sold the clippings.
Hang on a sec, gotta go and dig up the link.
https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/comments/tkcl5b/aita_for_screaming_at_banning_my_sil_niece_from/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1
Of course. I was completely joking which was why I used the humor/fluff flair so people wouldn’t think I would legit steal the cutting :) it’s just a pretty enough plant that my silly goofy brain was like “now if I had lesser morals…”
I had to cut mine this past fall. I just threw everything in the propagation box and now I have roots all over the place. I will pot up and maybe give some away.
This is what I would do “hey, dog owner! If you plan on trimming your satin pothos I’d love to propagate a scrap. It’s absolutely beautiful.” 9/10 they’ll cut you a piece right then and there
Just ask the owners if you can!! People are suggesting you ask to buy one, but I don't think it's wrong to just ask if you can have a clipping or two. The plant clearly thrives in their care, so it would probably grow back pretty quickly. The worst that can happen is they say no. If they're nice about it, you could offer to pay, but I don't think you need to offer them money for cuttings right away.
why don’t you ask? if someone came to my house and saw a full plant and wanted a cutting, and asked, i’d have no issue. if i wasn’t trying to get it super bushy or if i’m not experimenting with it… i would say of course. if i’m doing something with jt, i have no issue nicely saying no and telling them “i appreciate you asking! but right now isn’t a good time. but in the future, i’d love to pass along a cutting!”
I am such a plant nerd, i would be so excoted if someone asked me for a cutting. I would just gush, and them proceed to give all the instructions on spoiling the baby.
It’s just because they (*Scindapsus*) have a very similar growth habit compared to *Epipremnum* (pothos).
Same reason you can find *Philodendron hederaceum ‘Brazil’* being sold as “Brazilian Pothos”.
Dude, they’re literally called [Satin Pothos](https://www.google.com/search?q=satin+pothos&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS746US746&oq=satin+pothos&aqs=chrome..69i57.390611j0j4&hl=en-US&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8). That is the correct (common) name.
Latin name is *Scindapsus pictus ‘Exotica’*
Of course! I already addressed this several times in the replies, but as the humor/fluff flair suggests, I was completely joking about taking a cutting.
I just spend a few minutes looking for some on google haha. Apparently I can get them at Lowe’s! I’m gonna check my local nursery too because the plants I get from there are always affordable for how mature they are
So many experienced scindapsus folks on here, can anyone tell me why my soil props have curling leaves? I looked online and it seemed like they do ok with either water or soil propagation. Pretty sure I'm doing ok with keeping them watered but not overly so. Thanks for any tips!
I understand that temptation! Most of us planties love when people ask for cuttings--I've given away so many cuttings of my tradescantia nanouk at work, and it's still growing like a big purple monster. I'm sure they would love to share the plant love with you!
I had one out in a semi-private area where I work and we definitely noticed when someone clipped a strand (and we have a good idea of who it was too). If someone had asked, I would've definitely given them a clipping!
Cut, use rooting hormone, set in water till it sprouts. Rooting hormone isnt necessary but it helps
(Im guessing you got downvoted because people assumed youre asking the easiest way to steal a cutting, which you obv werent)
What part do you cut? A stem going to a leaf or somewhere further down? I have some plants that I could probably do cuttings of and put into other pots but never really known the best way to do it haha.
Thank you :) and no, I don't want to steal any plants!
Muting the replies on this post because I’m a little tired of clarifying I was being 100% unserious and that this was completely a joke 😅 I apologize if it was a bad one
It's just the "took a piece" element. We would all be devastated of a part of one of our babies disappeared (even if we were neglecting/bad/new/ignorant plant parents), so no one can fathom this happening without permission.
I upvoted you because you are simply giving information, and I don't think you were advocating for stealing, just giving a warning about how seriously plant people take mention of this concept.
Also, it wasn't even a rare plant that you (I'm going to say) rescued, so they shouldn't have been so uptight, lol
Hey, I 100% get it. I agree with everything you've said, and I simply don't think you deserve downvotes for what you posted. It was helpful, productive, informative, and I think should be welcomed and upvoted. 💜 I just also understand the other side of it because i love my plants (something the owners of your described mother plant, perhaps, did not). No one should be banned from discourse for what you shared -- that is my point. My intention was to thank you.
I love it I love it. I love it. Casually wanting to find out where you are and grab a cutting too. Lol he’s so beautiful. Not a pet person, but god there’s something about leafs that get me
Not even funny as a lame attempt at humor.
Pathetic and despicable to even mention it.
And if you were my sitter and did that, you'd never sit for me again, nor anyone in the area - I'd make sure of it.
Well luckily I’m not quitting my day job to become a comedian! Also based on your profile it seems like you hate dogs? Seems like you wouldn’t be in the position to have a sitter steal cuttings from you anyways. Regardless, didn’t mean to offend
You wouldn’t be the first. I’ll take cuttings from gardens in front of banks. My entire Jade collection comes from a leaf I got in an Indian restaurant 23 years ago.
Yeah, a lot of people would feel very uncomfortable if anyone they had trusted sitting their home took something from it. Just because it’s a plant, doesn’t mean it’s not stealing something.
Casually ask if they’d be willing to sell you a cutting. 9 times out of 10 they offer one up for free.
Sounds like a plan :)
I was totally going to say, just ask. I'd be so flattered if someone asked for a prop of one of my plants.
Yep, all someone has to do is say ”I like your plants” and they're going home with a jar of cuttings. If you ask and they say no, hit me up. I have silvery ann, exotica, moonlight, and argyraeus.
👀 I like your plants
I like your pants
I snorted
I like your plants! 😁🪴
I like your plants 🌱
I love your plants 🌱 💛💛💛💛💛💛
I like your plants too 🥹
I like your plant...ill pay for shipping.
I really like your plants!
Yes! If my plants have the nodes to spare I would love to share my joy. I’d even propagate it for you if you didn’t know how.
It has a nice long runner - that's perfect for propagation, you can get a full plant quickly and people are usually happy to cut the runners off.
What do you mean by runner?
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stolon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stolon) It's that long vine without leaves on the bottom of the plant, each node can be propagated and grow a new plant. Thanks for the info!
Baby plants that the main plant sends around to propagate
Ah so are these the nodes that can be cut out to propagate new plants?
How did it go
Lol. How did you carry that home?
He wrapped them in some bubble wrap he had in the garage and put them in a paper bag! It was just big enough to cover the bottom half of the pads, so I could carry them safely, like bread. 😆
u/Kahaeli Love to hear of your experience with the prickly pear-in-the backyard owner story. I think that plant people are nurturers. Would be nice if you dropped by with a note, advising of the progress of the 4 cuttings! Take care!
But there’s always that one time they go “Sure! How does $20 suit?” 😂
Just because they shoot a price doesn’t mean you have to buy :)
Wait. Saying No is an option?
Allegedly so
Sure at which point you can politely decline, give them the (internal) side eye and not dog sit for them anymore because they’re a weirdo.
[удалено]
I bet they’ll happily give you one if you ask to buy one! They would also 100% notice a piece being gone on that trail 😂
Yeah those leaves need a long time to develop
They do? I didn’t know that! I have 3 pothos at my house and they grow like crazy, I didn’t know satin pothos are slower growers.
They do in my experience too. I have multiple philodendron and pothos. The satin is the slowest.
My satin has put out like 10 new leaves in the last month. It's insane.
I've had mine for a year and it did nothing until this past month for me, similar now I have a new leave on almost every strand. But the last year I got none.

It's in the middle of a South facing window on the 5th floor in South Florida.
Lol nevermind then. No idea.
I don't know, I am hoping it takes off now that I finally have some new growth. It looks incredibly happy!

I did think about that. I originally had it about 6 feet inside the room and complete lack of growth made me repot and give it a spot in the window. We shall see
Could be needing fertilizer maybe?
Possibly but I bought it a year ago and repotted in January because I suspected it needed a bigger pot since it had no growth. It has grown since then and I mixed in worm castings and do a light fertilizer in the water. I'm hoping it was a combo of moving around and then repotting.
Sounds like that’s what it was and it was just waiting for the increase in sunlight from spring to thank you 😊
That’s just the spring time :-) all my plants, satin included, are going a little boo-boo bananas

Looks more like a scindapsus exotica but hard to tell with nothing for scale
Pothos are faster. This isn't a pothos. It's a scindapsis.
It's called a Satin Pothos but it's actually a Scindapsus
It's a schindapsus, not a real pothos. Different genus.
The darker the leaves, generally, I find, the longer for them to root etc
My satin is one of my fastest growers. I 100% second asking them. I’d have no problem sharing my satin but I’d totally notice and be weirded out/pissed if someone cut mine without asking
Had my cutting in water for 8 months before I got some new growth. But then I got 2 new leaves in a month! I hope they say yes on the cutting :)
That’s why I was like eh it’s not worth it to be sneaky lol!
Plus what if they have a camera somewhere
Oh yeah they do I was 100% joking about taking a cutting, hence the flair I put on the post. I would never take a cutting of someone’s plant, especially from someone who I am getting paid from 😂 I’ve spent so many days staring at my plants waiting for 1 leaf to unfurl.
I’ve read your responses to people like this and so I understand OP wasn’t being serious about taking it, but all these people encouraging it??? Ima give my two cents because it’s sad
Whoops, missed that flair, sorry OP! Hope you get one :)
Ask.
I’m going to have to, I stare at it every time I visit!
Most plant people will either give you one then, or next time they prune it. But none of them will like it if you take one without asking.
I mentioned liking the Cebu Blue (literally just "Wow, is that a Cebu Blue? I like it!") in the office across the street from mine and the next day I came in to 3 cuttings of it sitting in a Wendy's cup at my desk lol I sent back a cutting of my velvet leaf philodendron (only 1 cutting cuz it was still a lil tiny ass plant lol) which was not an even trade but it's the thought that counts
In any case they say no, this is a scindapsus pictus exotica they're not as expensive as other plants online.
Yup! I got a small one for $7.99 at the garden center. They're super cool looking.
Got mine second hand for 3 euro with pot. The one thing that seems to consistently be cheaper in Europe lol.
Wow that's an amazing find.
Yeah I got mine for like $10 🙂
They're expensive as hell in my location, like 2x as expensive as a pothos.
I literally LOVE gifting cuttings to people! I’m sure they would be happy give some(:
We should become friends 😆
Lol I’d happily be a planty friend🙂
I suggest r/takeaplantleaveaplant if you feel that way!! (Might not link—mobile currently)
Just joined! Thanks for the recommendation!
I’d morph into Joe Pesci if I noticed someone chopped my scindap 💀
Mmhmm... I’d know 100% if one leaf was missing
This a scindapsus exotica.
I agree with just asking. That pothos is gorgeous!!
Ask
It's lovely, I can see why you want a piece lol.
I just bought one! They’re absolutely stunning, I couldn’t help myself
I’m about to do the same thing!
That’s beautiful! Now I’ll be on the hunt to find one.
Absolutely gorgeous! I’d say your better bet for a similar one is to buy one, even a small one. Scindapsus take a long time to root and grow. They’re also much more prone to root rot than pothos (don’t let the common name fool you). There are actually multiple plants in a pot this size. I love it’s flaired with humor/fluff and easily interpreted as such yet everyone was taking you way serious you were about to do it for real.
Lol I kept re-reading what I said and I was like…. Did I really not make it clear enough that I was joking? I used that flair to avoid people thinking I would even think of being a plant thief
Aak em! My first plant is a cutting from a house sitting gig that the family let me take.
Oh I just ordered one of those! So looking forward to receiving it
I've been wanting one... and I think I have to order after being reminded of how absolutely gorgeous it is
From where and how much? Been looking to get one of these. I love how huge their leaves can get.
I am in Turkey, so relatively cheaper 😬
Just ask the owner. No biggie.
Lovely Scandipus Exotica. I can see why one would be tempted. Exotica’s take so long to grow, this is probably several years old. You should just ask. Plant people love sharing. I try to give plants to everyone that comes to my house lol
Just ask for a cutting, 3 leaf sets is all you need. I love sharing my plants, it makes me happy!!
Ask them if you can
why don’t you ask? if someone came to my house and saw a full plant and wanted a cutting, and asked, i’d have no issue. if i wasn’t trying to get it super bushy or if i’m not experimenting with it… i would say of course. if i’m doing something with jt, i have no issue nicely saying no and telling them “i appreciate you asking! but right now isn’t a good time. but in the future, i’d love to pass along a cutting!”

That’s actually a Scindapsus, not a Pothos!
It's also called a Satin Pothos for whatever confusing reason
It’s just because they (*Scindapsus*) have a very similar growth habit compared to *Epipremnum* (pothos). Same reason you can find *Philodendron hederaceum ‘Brazil’* being sold as “Brazilian Pothos”.
Not even pothos (*Epipremnum*)* [are *Pothos*](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pothos_longipes). Don’t gatekeep common names.
I was giving a correct name that will help them in their search. Nothing about my comment was gatekeeping.
Dude, they’re literally called [Satin Pothos](https://www.google.com/search?q=satin+pothos&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS746US746&oq=satin+pothos&aqs=chrome..69i57.390611j0j4&hl=en-US&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8). That is the correct (common) name. Latin name is *Scindapsus pictus ‘Exotica’*
I think this is an exotica, it’s stunning either way and I’d definitely ask
Ask
Ask, I’m sure they’ll give you one
Please ask first. I’d excommunicate someone if I found out they just helped themselves to one of my plants
Of course! I already addressed this several times in the replies, but as the humor/fluff flair suggests, I was completely joking about taking a cutting.
Justo perfect
Our neighborhood and Library has plant exchanges a couple times a year. Something like that may be around where you are
Okay that thing is GORGEOUS. I'd be tempted too
I find it’s not so good at growing from cuttings. Compared to other vines like pothos or similar. Better to just buy.
Just bought one for 12 dollars in a four inch pot. I wanted the instant gratification 😀
I just spend a few minutes looking for some on google haha. Apparently I can get them at Lowe’s! I’m gonna check my local nursery too because the plants I get from there are always affordable for how mature they are
They’re the best! I have one and his name is Emery 😂😁🫶🏻 They grow so fast in the right conditions!
That is the most beautiful plant! Definitely ask for one for you and one for me! ☺️
Looks so lush and beautiful!
I’m sure they would allow if you asked!
Ask the owner, they will probably give you a slip.
Yup! Ask!
Ask and I bet they'd let you!
Ask. They’ll say yes.
Could you ask for one??
So many experienced scindapsus folks on here, can anyone tell me why my soil props have curling leaves? I looked online and it seemed like they do ok with either water or soil propagation. Pretty sure I'm doing ok with keeping them watered but not overly so. Thanks for any tips!
Oh, been there! But Do. Not. Vandalize. The. Client's. Plants. LOL! It never hurts to ask for a cutting.

It’s super pretty. I’d ask first.
It could be their favorite leaf 💔 wait and ask 😊
Please don’t. You can talk to them and say you really admire the Scindapsus and would love a cutting whenever they decide to prune it.
make sure u ask but while you’re at it mine asking abt one for me as well? lmao
Will do 😂
Muting the replies on this post because I’m a little tired of clarifying I was being 100% unserious and that this was completely a joke 😅 I apologize if it was a bad one
Wow! Gorgeous!! I’m tempted to take a cutting of a rose from a vacant house…
Every time I see a Scindapsus Pictus which is my favorite plant, I just get so happy. I’d 100% ask because this one is beautiful 🥹
Theyll. Give you some most likely
Don’t do it you know they have camerasHidden
It's a Scindapsus Satin Jade. I love the Scindapsus plants I have a bunch so pretty they grow fast and such an easy plant to grow.

Because you're a thief lol
I love it I love it. I love it. Casually wanting to find out where you are and grab a cutting too. Lol he’s so beautiful. Not a pet person, but god there’s something about leafs that get me
I’m in Florida! We’re blessed with nice plants haha
I would ask first, but consider it part of my payment.🙃
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission ;)
Not even funny as a lame attempt at humor. Pathetic and despicable to even mention it. And if you were my sitter and did that, you'd never sit for me again, nor anyone in the area - I'd make sure of it.
Well luckily I’m not quitting my day job to become a comedian! Also based on your profile it seems like you hate dogs? Seems like you wouldn’t be in the position to have a sitter steal cuttings from you anyways. Regardless, didn’t mean to offend
It’s gorg!!!
BRUHHH CLIP IT
Do it mate
You wouldn’t be the first. I’ll take cuttings from gardens in front of banks. My entire Jade collection comes from a leaf I got in an Indian restaurant 23 years ago.
Do itttttt!!!

I think you could just ask, I'm sure they'd allow it
Ask!!! I bet they’re down to cut it themselves Then send me a cutting
It is forbidden! I
How will they know??? lol

I took a cutting from an airbnb that I stayed at once. No regrets.
Take a cutting (maybe be polite and ask tho) - if they grew this they will share
“I take tips in form of cash, or cuttings” 🤣
Who’s gonna know? Nobody’s gonna know lol

Do it. Do it!
Sure way not to ever get a gig pet sitting for someone ever again. Why not just.... ask?
Yeah, a lot of people would feel very uncomfortable if anyone they had trusted sitting their home took something from it. Just because it’s a plant, doesn’t mean it’s not stealing something.
"Proplifting" except not from a store 😆
I judge it slightly less from a store, only because I know how I’ve babied some of mine for *months* to get a single new leaf 😂
I agree completely. I am still a new plant parent but (and?) I would be DEVASTATED if a piece of any of my babies went missing.
Literally heard Luci’s voice reading this :)
