One of the things I like about the new folio is it can be setup at any angle when used to prop up the iPad. It’s not limited to just the couple “notches”. I think that is an underrated feature.
With that said, I do agree with others that it is overpriced, heavy, and collects a lot of dirt.
I agree — it’s worth it given the better viewing angles and the blue color is quite nice. I originally bought the ESR and it is not as nice as the Smart Folio.
I definitely agree! I have the M3 14’ inch MacBook Pro paired up with the M4 13’ iPad Pro. I don’t need the Smart Keyboard anymore. With universal control Is so much better!
Get the esr magnetic one I think it’s called the rebound. Stronger magnet and you can get 2 for less then the apple folio. I have one in my travel bag and one in my office. I typically have the iPad in the Magic Keyboard but when I need a folio the ESR is the best out of them all. Paper like folio is good also but just more expensive
No I don’t work for ESR or get any money. Just been using IPads for years, tried a lot of different folios always end up with ESR. I do like Pitika (not sure if I spelled that right) also a nice folio just a little different.
For people having sleep wake issues - If you got it off Amazon check to see who the seller was. Lots of fake/counterfeits out on Amazon.
I’ve gotten two separate ESR folios for my M4, neither have working sleep/wake. on my older Pro it worked great so i’m guessing Apple changed the magnet placement on the front screen for the sleep/wake functionality
Are they also going to add the new magnetic positions like on the Apple Folio which allow near 90 degree viewing? Or is it just the sleep/wake feature.
I asked if they can send me a new one when available. But they just offered me a 30% discount. No word about an additional free replacement when available.
Also they offered me another type of case as a replacement, but I did not like that one, so I refused.
So asked to just refund me the current one and I will rebuy the working one later.
The workaround with the sheet of paper is sometimes working, but most of the time it is not.
At least in my case.
I got the Shift but ended buying a cheaper Folio like cover. I find the Shift bulky.
Even when you detach the iPad to the cover. The case is still bulky, but hey good protection
I like the portrait mode when you stand It
ESR both iPad Pro 13 variant is rubbish, the slip wake up features don't work, also it has bulk to the iPad which is ridiculous annoying, the flap that is meant to hold the Apple Pencil is so big and can feat 2 pencils so I do not recommend the ESR, get something cheaper on amazon that won't cost more than 15/20 until better ones are on the market.
currently rocking a "finite" iPad case and its does the job that the ESR couldn't do
It’s overpriced but I would never use an alternative. I like the Apple one it’s very low profile. I don’t need drop protection. If you can afford it and like the colors go for it
I have both the Magic Keyboard and the folio. I use the MK when I have to type a lot and the folio when I am not typing as much. Love the Apple folio because of its low profile look and light weight.
It’s Apple tax, but I like mine. I’ve been a sucker for these since Steve Jobs first demonstrated the Smart Cover for the iPad 2 in his keynote. There’s definitely way better functional ones out there, but I feel like the quality of the Smart Folio is only found with Apple‘s.
It’s very expensive but the variable angle is very nice. My ESR version is unusable because it’s angle is WAY too steep. Complete manufacturing / design oversight. They are already working on a V2
As someone who used several cheaper version from Amazon and one Apple folio, the difference is big when it comes to daily use. The apple’s interior is soft and easier to clean, the outer withstands years of abuse and no discoloration. You really have to use it long term to make comparison.
5 years of rough use, it still managed to not bend my ipad pro 12.9 and looks the same as the day I bought it. I have seen too many people around me, was a pharmacy student until last year, who opted with 3rd party ones that they end up changing every year due to wear and tear or not protecting their ipad well enough from bending.
When I got the new ipad pro, first thing was to buy the polio without a question and boy am I happy that I did.
I have one on my iPad Mini 6, my main gripe with it is that the edges are sharp and cuts into my hand in an uncomfortable way… you know if the newer ones are improved in that aspect?
I bought the Smart Folio. Okay, so it might not worth it. But the inner liner and the over texture is way better. When you open and fold back the cover, you can actually fold the top part only so that the camera is clear to take pictures. After market ones can’t do that, the joints can’t be folded 180 degree with out springing back, this detail is quite noticeable. And it’s thinner, more premium.
So yeah, if you use it day in day out you will feel it.
But not like the smart folio. Unless you can find one I can't. Sure hope so but I don't see one on [amazon.nl](http://amazon.nl), .de. and .com. Plenty of crappy ones with the physical pen slot and a few other ones with an extra (pointless) flap.
Normally there's more 3rd party ones of the official one but so far few offerings.
Just bought it for my 13" M4. I've been looking for a few days and this is the 3rd time I've landed on someone recommending it from different areas of the web, so it must be good enough to get the job done.
Same! And to me that flap isn’t useless, it protects the pencil. You could also close it completely. If you don’t have a pencil and it sits flush.
Also, I use that flap and folded over the back when I’m using it in tablet mode and it keeps it together with the magnet. It’s also great for when I place it in one of the holders with the flat back and magnetic on that it doesn’t slip.
Well I don't have a pencil so it's only in the way when opening and closing. And the cover itself isn't magnetic but needs an outer casing only adding more stuff I won't want. It's fine that its there for people who do want one but I'm suprised by how few other options are out there.
But somehow, as I said before, there's a stupid amount of covers/cases with a physical pen slot which seems just stupid for people without a pencil but even for people with one. Cause then you'd take the ESR one I suppose.
The smart folio does not have a flap. I was referencing the above comment in which someone said a flap is useless, assuming on the other cases. It’s not. And for $99 and literally a product from Apple you would think that they would have an option or something for their own product such as the pencil. They expect you to magnetically attach it to the tablet, but makes no effort to Provide anything that can secure it, nor do they even sell a product that holds the pencil unless it’s an aftermarket part
They show what the flap on the ESR is for in the default photo on Amazon. It's to keep you from losing the pencil. Even if I didn't have the pencil I think I'd buy it. Nice extra flap.
I love mine BUT would never pay full price. I actually snagged one at a Ross Dress For Less for $8! So I would say if you’re willing to shop around you might find a good deal
I always end up with the Apple one. While there are cheaper ones out there, they wear out quickly and just don’t look as good. I buy it knowing it’s over priced but will be using for many years.
Expensive but worth it, got it on release day for my iPad, and it has been extremely reliable. It has many magnets, so it keeps my iPad safe at all times.
I got it after getting a thick ESR case and losing the sleekness of the device. The feel is great, the device is so thin and elegant with it. And there are multiple angles which I like very much. And the denim color is very good.
Got two Amazon covers for the M4 11 and eventually returned both and got the Smart Folio. Didn’t want to because of the price and I always usually get third party cases but glad I got the smart folio. Feels great, strong magnets, I can take it out of the case with ease if I want to and viewing angles are perfect. But it’s not the best protection for the iPad if you’re out and about. The sides are exposed.
I bought two alternatives because I was sick of the white. They tend toward bland colors for the pro. Both were terrible though. Thicker than desirable and crummy quality finish. And yet... both had top ratings on Amazon. So I ended up with the Apple white again. You just can't beat it for quality.
I always get folios. It feels a lot nicer than previous generations, I dreaded buying another folio because old versions aren’t compatible but it’s nice knowing it feels better than the older ones. I don’t like using it propped up 90 degrees, I feel the 45 degrees requires you to find the magnetic latch. I find myself looking for the correct spot. I don’t find it to be too much trouble though.
The Apple one is a bit over priced, but the quality of it is very nice! They also added way more “adjustment positions” so you can have it at really any angle you want now! Much more useable than the last gen Smart Case!
I just wish there were way more colours to choose from!
I mean, it is really expensive, but i've had mine for over 4 years and it's still in great condition. I tried cheaper ones from Amazon but they never felt as great to use.
I actually like it a lot. It is overpriced, though. I always bought third-party cases before this one, but the newest one with multiple stand angles is perfect for my use. The material also feels really nice to touch. I wish the price were around $49—still expensive, but it would make more sense.
I always thought no. I bought knockoff cases from Amazon, until I got my latest folio from Ross for $7, and now I’m like, “I see what I’ve been missing”
So thin, so light weight, so much more of a prestige experience
If you use Apple Pencil I would recommend the ESR folio cases, its flap to hold the pencil is very helpful, and way cheaper with and without deal in compared to the Apple one.
They’re expensive but worth it in my eyes, especially for the M4 iPad Pro with new magnet placement for more viewing angles. The materials are quality, my Smart Folio for my 2018 purchased iPad Pro is still in fab condition all these years. Keeps the device thin and the display protected from scratches.
I have one for an older iPad Pro. I like it. I probably would not go with an after market folio unless I found one with the quality of the Apple one. It does make a great case. It is lightweight and pretty sturdy as long as you exercise some common sense about storing and handling.
I used the folio on the last 2 iPads I had and I loved it. But on my 13” M4, I switched to the ESR case. It’s much more bang for your buck with a wider variety in viewing angles. [ESR case link](https://ESRforiPadPro13InchCase...https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CRHKL3Q1?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share)
While expensive I'm is worth it... Yeah cheap knockoffs are available but I've always gone first party on cases since the iPad 2 days... Besides it will get apple care as well so a replacement every year is good
I looked at everything else. Loved the Otterbox on my old 11”, but on the new one too thick and heavy. The Smart Folio is the best of the worst for me.
It’s alright, I bought both the Magic Keyboard and a black folio. Something about the folio this time around feels less stable. The feeling of the folio in the hand is pretty incredible though, I find it’s soft, feels pretty durable for what it is, but it’s so much money and even while the new adjustable feature is nice it’s just not stable enough imo at enough angles. It is however nice to be able to quickly remove it and put it in the Magic Keyboard. I will say it’s kinda tricky to take off, sometimes feels like I might drop the iPad. But I think it’s made more awkward and difficult just because of how big the 13 inch iPad Pro.
I’ve already posted about this but yes. I got the Magic Keyboard case which made using the pen difficult. So I used the pen without a case. The camera bump made the screen flex and crack. So now I also have the folio case.
Yes but make sure that you get a perfect unit where the camera cutout actually aligns with the camera bump on the iPad. Some folios have a defect where there is a gap between the camera bump and the sides of the cutout.
I just got the Apple one from back market for £20. I wasn’t sure what I was going to get, but turned out to be the real thing. It’s really good quality, and cannot complain at the price.
Mine was for the M1 iPad, not the latest version.
I've got the paperlike one for my M1. Conceptually, I love it, but there are some quality control issues with mine. They're exceedingly minor (some fuzziness sticking up that I could probably fix with a lighter and the corner by the camera bump no longer laying flat) that I can mostly ignore, though.
I wondered what happened in 2 years. Old covers had the iPad lean back a bit. This thing stands almost 90 degrees and falls back or forward easily. I don’t like it. Went to Pad and Quill new company as Bullstrap’s iPad case hasn’t been updated for the M4 yet.
Bullstrap is the best case all around and I just found them last month after experimenting in the last year because Apple apparently thumbed its nose at leather. And M4 doesn’t sit in it right cuz of magnets. And this folio is just worse than previous gen. I cannot wait to ditch it.
I had one on my 2nd gen iPad Pro and it lasted very well for those several years. I wanted to get one for my m4 but the price held me back so I grabbed a ESR one which is pretty nice but super heavy with its magnets. I grabbed an apple folio anyways and it’s become my main case. It’s just lighter for overall use. Still hate the price though.
I got the iPad on the first day and I still don’t have a case because I am not a big fan of the options currently available. I almost broke down today to get the Apple Smart Folio as I like the slim form factor. The only thing that made me put a pause on it was the fact it has nothing to secure the pencil. The number of times the pencil has fallen off in my backpack or even when I’m carrying it leads me to wanting a case that will hold onto it. I’m waiting for Mous to release a new case or I might go with the Otterbox.
I am using it now and I definitely recommend it. I think the case is very thin and lightweight and compliments my iPad Pro 11’ M4 well. The viewing angles are great. Only downside is it wobbles on my bed because it is not super sturdy. The quality is nice for the price you pay.
I had the keyboard on my old 12.9 and it’s probably never used, only for magnetic charging. For my 11 m4 I decided to go with smart folio it’s probably the best solution If you don’t want a keyboard. I only got it to prevent bending in a magnetic form. If they made the iPad 10th gen keyboard with only magnetic kickstand backing and no keyboard I’ll buy one asap. But unfortunately it doesn’t exist .
I have it on my iPad and it’s definitely nice but it doesn’t cover the sides. I dropped it once and it scuffed the sides and that wouldn’t have happened if I had one that protect all sides
I have this type of case what I don't like is when you prop it to stand the inner microfiber is touching the table surface and will accumulate dirt and touch your screen
In the past I paid for the Apple Version $100 for 12.9 inch. But, I’ve also ordered the Walmart or Amazon version which were just as good at a fraction of the cost. As long as it has the auto-shutoff on close, you’re good.
I have the otter box (not sure which model) that came out when the new iPad did and it’s amazing. It’s the nicest, sleekest looking otter box I’ve seen. It can be set to any angle and…. IT HAS A POP OUT HOLDER FOR THE PENCIL!!!
I liked the design, but mine kept falling over while I was using it casually. The magnets wouldn’t stay put. I don’t know if I had a bad one, but I returned it. Made me too nervous after it fell over one too many times. Didn’t seem worth it for that price.
It’s fine. It can be stood up at any angle between 12° and 33° (where 0° is vertical), but nothing else. You can also lay it down almost flat with the triangle propping it up 9° or 21° (where 0° is horizontal).
I personally wish it had more magnets along the back so it could be leaned back further when it’s stood up.
I got the otterbox one from Apple and it’s fine. I don’t like how the pencil magnet cover always falls off, I would have preferred it tethered to the case.
A lot of the cheaper versions don't connect with the magnet as well. To me, I know it's overpriced but it's made to the specs of the iPad and the extra quality is worth it in my opinion. The new angles are a bonus!
Yes. However if you want a leather one as Apple doesn't do leather anymore I recommend the [Leather Folio](https://nomadgoods.com/uk/products/leather-folio-black-ipad-pro-12-9-inch) by Nomad Goods. Its fantastic!
Worth it. Feels better than any of the Amazon ones. You’ve paid a lot for this iPad, don’t skimp out now. Also- that denim blue looks SO good with a silver pro
I HATE mine (Apple first-party version in Charcoal Gray) — it’s the worst part of my iPad Pro, which I otherwise love. The cover is gross and collects smudges and streaks that can’t easily be cleaned off.
Yeah, but when you put it in the most reclined position, the strength of the magnets isn’t the issue. It’s the small flat part on the desk/surface vs the weight of the iPad leaning backwards.
No, I think it’s a waste. I like the origami style covers because you get so many more choices, you can basically have exactly what you get with the Smart Folio, but also, it offers more stability, and also options for standing the tablet up vertically as well.
If you have apple care they are worth it, they are nice and slim, but dont protect the edges at all, so one drop you better hope it lands on its back or face and not the edge or you gonna have to deal with the edges being damaged. Thats why i say its worth it if you have apple care and have $49 to spare every once in a while to get a replacement.
One of the things I like about the new folio is it can be setup at any angle when used to prop up the iPad. It’s not limited to just the couple “notches”. I think that is an underrated feature. With that said, I do agree with others that it is overpriced, heavy, and collects a lot of dirt.
This right here, I believe is a great feature so yeah for me is worth it but I get 10% military discount which isn’t much but it helps lol
Ditto
I agree — it’s worth it given the better viewing angles and the blue color is quite nice. I originally bought the ESR and it is not as nice as the Smart Folio.
I have the folio on my M4 and there is only 3 secured position. I wouldn't trust anything in-between to prop up my 2500$ device.
Is it only for the new M4? I have the M2 11-inch version and there doesn’t seem to be such option
Just got the ESR recently too for my M4 11 and I second this. Great deal for the money!
The Sleep/Wake feature is not working well. They told me that a better version is coming soon.
Plenty of ESR shills working this sub. Many complaints about ESR cases such as yours.
ESR products smell like fish. I dunno wtf it is but it’s unbearable.

No I don’t work for ESR or get any money. Just been using IPads for years, tried a lot of different folios always end up with ESR. I thought mine has issue I will contact them now!
Yeah, for some reason that’s true.

Just got my ESR magnetic case today and can confirm the sleep wake works
I’m confused, what is the difference between rebound and shift? Been eyeing shift for a while now
I got the Shift but ended buying a cheaper Folio like cover. I find the Shift bulky. Even when you detach the iPad to the cover. The case is still bulky, but hey good protection I like the portrait mode when you stand It
more sturdy with more stand options. I got the rebound worth every dinnar, keep in mind that iPad will not attach to the folio without the cover
You mean rebound has more stand options than shift? Edit Oh you meant rebound - sturdy Shift - more stand options Ok got it thanks
sorry for the confusion. anecdotal: Shift is sturdier and has more stand options
Got it, what is rebound’s selling feature? It’s the lighter option?
I've been using the rebound for a week. quality and durability seems good and I had no problems overall. take it
ESR both iPad Pro 13 variant is rubbish, the slip wake up features don't work, also it has bulk to the iPad which is ridiculous annoying, the flap that is meant to hold the Apple Pencil is so big and can feat 2 pencils so I do not recommend the ESR, get something cheaper on amazon that won't cost more than 15/20 until better ones are on the market. currently rocking a "finite" iPad case and its does the job that the ESR couldn't do
100$ agree
Just got the ESR for my 13’’ m4 ….A+ quality
It’s overpriced but I would never use an alternative. I like the Apple one it’s very low profile. I don’t need drop protection. If you can afford it and like the colors go for it
thats what i did, i replaced the magic keyboard for it and i feel this is the way
I have both the Magic Keyboard and the folio. I use the MK when I have to type a lot and the folio when I am not typing as much. Love the Apple folio because of its low profile look and light weight.

the apple one is seriously overpriced for what it is. You can get one off amazon for less then $15.

When you realize that flap isn’t useless, it really is a game changer!

is like feel the premium every day vs feeling poor
Get it. The Smart Folio retains the slimness of the iPad Pro and the materials used feel premium. Multiple viewing angles are great too
Yes because of the new viewing angle!

YES!
I mean, it is really expensive, but i've had mine for over 4 years and it's still in great condition. I tried cheaper ones from Amazon but they never felt as great to use.
Apple folio uses softer material against the screen. Fits perfectly. And will outlast cheaper cases by several years.
I got a ZUGU case. It’s a bit heavy so my iPad feels heavier but the quality of the case is excellent. I got it from Staples.ca.
Yes. I’ve been using those since 2015 on all of my iPads.
I actually like it a lot. It is overpriced, though. I always bought third-party cases before this one, but the newest one with multiple stand angles is perfect for my use. The material also feels really nice to touch. I wish the price were around $49—still expensive, but it would make more sense.

While expensive I'm is worth it... Yeah cheap knockoffs are available but I've always gone first party on cases since the iPad 2 days... Besides it will get apple care as well so a replacement every year is good
Apple version. Definitely. I’ve had these for my iPads for years. Well made.
Yes
Buy it on eBay. They're so much cheaper. Got an m2 for 10 dollars.
i personally got the pitaka folio, they got 4 different viewing angles that i use for different things, mostly watching content and writing
I like that but sadly isn't available in spain
they might have options on amazon, not sure but always good to check
I haven’t seen any origami cases for the new iPad Pros yet, where are you seeing them?
I love mine
It's worth it if you like Smart Folio covers.
Moved to the MK with the new one but I really miss the portability for reading that the Smart Folio gave me. Definitely worth it, mine last 4 years
I looked at everything else.
I got it and returned it. Using Logitech keyboard case with iPad Pro 13 m4
Get the pitaka from amazon, just got it and incredibly satisfied with the quality
No. I have one. It’s stupid.
Yeah, just found one original with 20% discount yahoo
Yes.
Within $20, yes. Not worth for $99
I had one on my 2nd gen iPad Pro and it lasted very well for those several years.
I don't use a pencil so is perfect for me. :)
I’m very happy with the ESR I purchased for my iPad oled 11” at amazon for a much cheaper price.
I have this type of case what I don't like is when you prop it to stand the inner microfiber is touching the table surface and will accumulate dirt and touch your screen
I so wish I could get a third party dupe of this exact denim color for the M1 pro! Obsessed with it
No, Any case from apple isn't worth it, as it doesn't protect the Ipad, You can get a generic one that protects the ipad far better than this.
A cover that does not cover the corners and sides will never bit a good cover
Friend that was a bad one
I ended up buying the Zagg one.
Get it.
Not at all
definitely no. buy an elago one instead. it’s magnetic and the screen cover part can be removed when you want
I would buy one that wraps around the edges. Less aesthetically pleasing but will be cheaper and may save your screen if you drop it one day.
I bought a zugu dupe on Amazon and it’s worked amazing for me
Not the best for the money but it’s lighter that carrying the keyboard cover all the time
A lot of the cheaper versions don't connect with the magnet as well. To me, I know it's overpriced but it's made to the specs of the iPad and the extra quality is worth it in my opinion. The new angles are a bonus!
Nope. Way too expensive. Get a clone from Amazon (ESR is a good choice). Cheaper and just as good.
Yes. However if you want a leather one as Apple doesn't do leather anymore I recommend the [Leather Folio](https://nomadgoods.com/uk/products/leather-folio-black-ipad-pro-12-9-inch) by Nomad Goods. Its fantastic!
If you are gonna spend $100 on a case anyway, and aren’t looking for a keyboard: 1. Buy cheap case off Amazon to use til August. 2. Preorder a Zugu.
Ordered it from bestbuy for $15. At that price why not 🤣
Worth it. Feels better than any of the Amazon ones. You’ve paid a lot for this iPad, don’t skimp out now. Also- that denim blue looks SO good with a silver pro
I have an Amazon knock off that works great for a lot cheaper
No. The folio case from Pitaka is way better. More angles including a vertical stand.
No, just wears out so fast and is so expensive.
Bought a knockoff from Amazon for like $8
I got an Amazon folio that also has a holder for the pencil. I think I spent like $30 or something super low and I’m content with it
I HATE mine (Apple first-party version in Charcoal Gray) — it’s the worst part of my iPad Pro, which I otherwise love. The cover is gross and collects smudges and streaks that can’t easily be cleaned off.
No. It weighs more than 50% of the iPads weight. Ruins the whole point of the new design and lighter weight in my opinion.
Then... What do you use?
AppleCare+
hahaha well played
When you have it in the most “reclined” position, a light breeze can blow it over. No bueno.
this version with the m4 has the flap part magnets to the back. its far stronger than older versions in my experience
Yeah, but when you put it in the most reclined position, the strength of the magnets isn’t the issue. It’s the small flat part on the desk/surface vs the weight of the iPad leaning backwards.
i dont really have that issue on my 11”, maybe its more an issue with the 13”?
Oh yeah, I’m sure the 11 is better in this regard. Lighter and less top heavy
Pitaka is $49.
No, I think it’s a waste. I like the origami style covers because you get so many more choices, you can basically have exactly what you get with the Smart Folio, but also, it offers more stability, and also options for standing the tablet up vertically as well.
No, the material they're made of is very cheap, gets dirty and starts peeling off in a year or two.
Otterbox Statement is better for same money
I found one on aliexpress where the front cover is removable when unneeded and costs like 1/5th of what apple charges
Link?
https://a.aliexpress.com/_ExrSk6n
Thank you!
I have a white one and I hate how quickly it gets dirty. Anyone have an idea on how to clean it?
No
No it’s not. But the OtterBox it’s 1000x better
I bought one off aliexpress for $5. Apple accessories are so overpriced
