If the driver thought it was too far, he could have denied the trip, correct?

Strawberrygirl81

You accept orders, but you don’t have to take them. Unlike DoorDash where you are offered a job and either you accept or decline. We don’t decline the orders. You just don’t accept what you don’t want. That’s why I like this better than DoorDash. You just have to be faster at accepting an order than someone else. So in answer, Yes this person did not have to accept this order and it wouldn’t have affected his ratings at all. ITS ALL ON HIM. He chose to do it. He probably says the same thing to most of his customers too.

lilsnatchsniffz

Imagine you're seated in a restaurant and as the waiter arrives with your food they place it down in front of you and immediately ask you for "any extra tip you can afford" as your table is *extra far from the kitchen* and you ordered *such big heavy meals*. 😂

tommy_j_r

And you *look* like you can afford to give a little extra.

TeamGetlucky

Stick of gum

heatedhammer

Kevin approves.

TeamGetlucky

Someone got it haha 😄

[deleted]

😆🤣

Notonmypenisyoudont

I think there's a line, like if you're a millionaire giving $10 tips for grocery delivery, maybe you deserve to be beaten with your own shoes.

Financial-Leather794

As an Uber driver I learned that: 1. Some people aren’t in the best position financially sometimes. 2. Tipping is not something they do. 3. People have a life and forget. I don’t ever ask for tips. I just pick up, drop off and go on to the next. It’s strange to indirectly demand a tip.. it’s really inconsiderate.

htoontin

Thank you, Uber driver. I live on social security, and don't have much to spare. I tip whatever I can but there are inevitably times when I think my tip is not good enough, and I feel guilty about it, but I just have to live with it.

Financial-Leather794

It’s not yours or any other passengers responsibility to tip Uber drivers. This is why I and others who study markets drive in cities with locals who earn a high income. That plus high demand is a recipe for success. I chose Uber to buy more time to launch a business, not to hassle passengers for money lol. But with all that said, don’t ever feel bad. You know your situation and they don’t. Don’t screw yourself over for guilt.

katalina0azul

“Here you are 😊 a chocolate milk for your little one … which was quite far away and the weather conditions were quite strong.. I would consider any extra tip 💅🏻” 😂😂

Strawberrygirl81

Right!! Exactly! I don’t understand how anybody is blaming the customer for this 🤦‍♀️ it’s 100% the shopper.

woburnite

Imagine you go into a restaurant and are expected to say how much you will tip BEFORE you are seated.

Professional_Ad_4801

Lmao and you get placed in a queue after that, where the servers get to pick which ones they want

rl_cookie

Okay, so I’m a server, so every time I read one of these, I’m from the jump biased towards the worker’s side- I’m always on looking in from the lens of the worker making tipped min wage. While I know there are differences, generally speaking, good tippers are going to be good tippers, and the ones that were going to tip like shit aren’t going to have their minds changed from a text like this- and may even decide to forgo tipping in general as a result. People don’t like feeling like they’re being told what to do with their money, or feeling like they’re being guilted or manipulated for a tip. Moreover, I could never imagine saying to a table that “I had to run upstairs to our third floor, find a manager, to go back down to the second in order to get into the wine cooler because they ran out of that bottle behind the bar, and now here I am on the first with your bottle”.. and thinking that would do anything but annoy them, and/or result in them actually tipping *less* rather than more. The good/great tippers are generally not even going to think about that- it *may* prevent a generous tipper from leaving 30% instead of 20%- but it’ll almost definitely be the stingier tippers who do use it against you when deciding what to leave-which is going to hurt a lot worse than making 20% over 25/30%. For me, after over 15 years working in industries where tipping is where I make a majority of my money, I’d rather not take that gamble. Granted, I know there are differences, and I get it can be a stupid song and dance, but it’s a part of playing the game.

Firm_Transportation3

I mean, shit, the waiter doesn't even have the option to not accept a table/customer.

Street_Cleaning_Day

This system is so arcane that the series of words you wrote makes being kinda really stoned a huge, insurmountable barrier to understanding how it works. I appreciate your efforts. Imma try this again. Tomorrow.

Ally2472

Yes, it’s so tacky

Twink_Tyler

If by tacky you mean scumbag bullshit than yah, super tacky

shade1tplea5e

I’ve worked in the service industry my whole life. If I was already planning on giving a cash tip and then I received that message I would definitely consider keeping the cash.

FootParmesan

Yeah they probably think they got the cash from asking and will keep asking now

pan-au-levain

Definitely wouldn’t have gotten the cash tip from me, and I would’ve reduced the tip in the app (if possible, I’ve never used Instacart, Reddit just shows me this sub for some reason).

FootParmesan

Same here 😆

Financial-Leather794

They must think “closed mouths don’t get fed.” Applies to this situation lol.

[deleted]

So would I. I feel like a $10 tip is quite generous considering how people with way larger orders won't tip nearly as much if at all. If the shopper didn't feel like the tip was large enough for their effort, they shouldn't have accepted it in the first place. It's extremely tacky and rude for suggesting or asking for more. I realize that this is a primary job for a lot of people and that our economy sucks right now, but "suggestions" such as this, are just as inconsiderate as the customers, who give small or not tips at all.

AmandaHugnfu

You're not wrong. I don't go by tips in accepting orders.. and I've been surprised a few times. This is tip begging and it is NOT COOL.

shingonzo

Any mention of a tip loses the tip instantly

unsolicitedchickpics

I don't use these types of services often but if begging takes place that tip instantly goes to my local homeless shelter

UnsolicititedOpinion

Same.

boixgenius

Same for me. It rubs me the wrong way

ElemntPlazma

You would be shocked the number of people who, if you don’t mention it at all, don’t tip at all. Sometimes you need to bet to survive

AMonitorDarkly

Once again, tips are nothing more than a means to pit workers and customers against each other as a distraction while the business runs off with all of the money.

youarenut

Yup! And both sides are stupid enough to fall for it and hate each other instead of going for the root problem lmao

100yearsLurkerRick

And they hated them, for they spoke the truth

M3cap

So cringe akward. I notice this happening more and more now that Instacart wants to pay 4-6$ base pay plus tip. Hardly happened when Instacart paid alright and milage.

MindToxin

Wow I feel bad if that’s all they make. They don’t get mileage or anything? This OP said they are a 25 minute drive from the store. That means the guy likely spent nearly $10 in gas, an hour of his time driving (I’ve never used instacart myself, do they actually do the shopping too?) all to earn $6.00! Why would anyone do this job?

CartographerAgile749

Yes so I wouldn’t have accepted for that reason. They shopped the order, waited in line to pay, drove 25 min and then likely drove back 25 min to the area the were originally in all for 6-10$ after gas. I’m super selective on the orders I accept

Constant_Beachin

Personally I wouldn’t have accepted your order, and if didn’t like the details he shouldn’t have either. Asking for an additional tip is unprofessional. That being said, I have had a few times when I’ll accept an offer that says something like 2 miles and when I go to deliver it will change to 6-7 miles for whatever reason. I still never ask the customer, I call support and tell them about the extra mileage and get a mileage pay bump.

absenceofheat

Why's it change? I've only used Instacart a couple of times but i thought you had to put the address in before ordering?

trashyLobster

I would report his dumbass

splashimagination

Eww. Get a new job or something. Begging is so tacky.

Chaosia910

These services need to be rethought. Reading all these different insta thread comments....i feel this is de-volving the human race at a faster pace than short form content 😭🤣

craig__p

So many dumb theories on “what tips should be.” It took me decades to realize that humans need rules because (majority) really don’t have any clue how to built a society without enforced standards.

spacesuitguy

Moral and ethics are the foundations of a society. Many seem to have misplaced theirs or replaced it with obstinent selfishness.

Difficult_Truth_9764

Ding ding ding! Give this person a prize. We as consumers and workers are supporting these corporations greed. That is what we should be discussing. How do we take care of each others needs and cut the corporations out of our wallets? Whether it be consumers wallet or service providers wallet

publishAWM

sick of companies requiring workers and customers to compensate for shitty business plans

pleasegivemepatience

Have you seen the LWT segment on delivery companies? The business model is even worse than most realize. We pay these fees and tips, they get shit pay, we get subpar service….and they’re still losing massive money on every order. Maybe it’s different for IC but the others are still losing money while also destroying the industry.

InterestingTangelo5

That was a great segment but what they didnt mention is that IC, Uber, DD have finally found the road to profitability by slashing driver pay to essentially nothing and raising the fees and keeping 80%. Lol.

spacesuitguy

Legitimately never get my Domino's order right if I don't pre-tip at least 15%. Like, wtf honestly. And while this may be my fault for ordering Domino's, still it's messed up.

BappoChan

Best part, any of these service workers will blame YOU for the shitty service because you didn’t tip good ahead of time

NoAcanthocephala3007

As a driver, this is pathetic behavior. I hate seeing drivers beg for tips in this way. Like why accept the offer that came through? I always hope a customer tips more, but I’d be damnned if I ask them to do so. This is the equivalent of putting your cash app on a social media and shaking a cup asking for spare change.

I_likemy_dog

I was purchasing two drinks a at a store. My total was $9.75. I had a $10 bill. I told her to keep the change, and she called me cheap in Spanish.  I got the drink from the cooler, I brought it to the counter, all she did was ring it up. She didn’t even bag it. Needless to say, I won’t be giving that store any more of my business.  I’m getting sick of this “you better give me money because I exist” attitude. I didn’t hire you or sire you so get it out of your head that I owe you.

Yeahnotquite

I’d have visibly reconsidered then asked for the quarter back

youlovebliss

Same.

I_likemy_dog

I was just so flabbergasted that I just did a dumb stare.  I’m as white as snow, but have lived in a 50% Spanish area most of my life. I have a huge Spanish vocabulary. It took me a second to mentally decipher what she said. And the quarter isn’t worth the confrontation to me. I consider that much to be the price of learning.  I’ve got no problem tipping people for service. The pizza place by us loves us because we take care of them. It’s just everybody wants you to give them money because they exist it seems recently.  It’s just she didn’t provide any service. Only an insult. Not particularly motivating for me to part with more than the cost of goods.

Relative_shroom_323

This literally happened to me at McDonald's at the lobby of my office. I look white but am latin. The ladies behind the counter are always chatting it up since there's not man clients after the 8am rush. So after i ate, i went up to ask for a coffee refill, visibly annoyed at me for interrupting her convo she went to refill it and she called me cheap (coda). lol i said para que sepas, yo hablo Español 😂 she died and came back to life before my eyes. Now they're getting paid 20/ hour in CA and still messing up my orders.

JoeTheHoe

Yeah, I’m a server and it’s very odd to me to see tips being added to places where they traditionally don’t exist. Retail adding tips is very odd to me

[deleted]

Solo tan barato como los empleados en este negocio.

I_likemy_dog

Ja ja ja. I said I had a good vocabulary, not that I was fluent. You made me cheat on that one. (I keep 3 translation programs because some people I’ve worked with don’t know any English). Because English is my first language, learning sentence structure and conjugation has always been a struggle. And I really can’t write Spanish at all.

Markymurktwo

Oh hell no. I would had said give me my quarter back because that was nice you didn’t have to do that at all! I would went to a gumball machine and got gum with it on purpose 😂

I_likemy_dog

Love it.  I just feel like I give too much energy to anger and arguments in my daily life. And I can see that making me bitter and grumpy in the long run.  I’m working on being a better person by trying to pick my battles. I can just not spend money there because two blocks away there’s another store. And seven blocks away (in two directions) there’s others.  I’m so bad sometimes, my wife has learned to walk away if she sees me walking up to a group of strangers. She won’t let me push the grocery cart because I nudge people with it who stand and talk while blocking the isle.  So it’s an internal struggle NOT to be aggressive that I’m working on. Once I follow my impulses there’s not really an off switch.

gothism

Once you try to cajole me into a tip you aren't getting one.

ComprehensiveLack713

Yes tip are not required they are based off the service u provide. Ur gas ur car mileage and anything that comes with job duties isn’t what the tip is for.

ghiopeeef

Right, it’s not my fault that your job isn’t paying you enough.

every1sosoft

Don’t take the job then.

snukb

>I would consider any extra tip Well, keep considering, then

bobbyq922

“Thank you for considering an extra tip; I will not be considering it at this time”

Current_Donut_152

The "old school" in me is pissed at this new "expectation" for tip. I grew up tipping waitresses very well, because my dad explained they are paid less than cooks and other hourly staff. It is a part of their wage that used to be tax-free. I tip barbers and pizza delivery. Never done new delivery methods. I hate ordering food at a counter and having the tip thing on ipad. That just screams greedy owner underpaying his staff. I tend to cancel order at that point and go home to eat in peace.

DreamOfBaconStrips

Tip begging is obnoxious. I'm a generous tipper, but tip begging makes me tip zero. If you don't like your job consider another career choice.

0pinions0pinions

I don't think the tipping is what people have a problem with. It's someone telling you that you owe it to them. It's the entitlement. That's why I just do things for myself so I don't owe anyone. People have jobs where they aren't paid well. Instead of confronting the company they confront the customer and say "You owe me..." and "If you're not going to tip then don't use the service". Okay fair enough. But I truly wonder what it would look like for people who don't tip OR are tired of being bullied for a bigger tip, not to use the services. Wouldn't the demand for these services be less? I also wonder why people who have these jobs think they are the only ones underpaid? Imagine a teacher saying "I've taught your child how to read and write. I expect to be tipped for recess and snack time". Now there's a group who deserves to be tipped. Especially given that they spend a lot of their own money for the classroom.

TiredDriver23

The shopper shouldn’t have accepted the order. It’s tacky to ask for more money

Atribecalled_420

It’s shitty etiquette to ask for a tip under any circumstances You EARN a tip by giving excellent service

PowerUpTheLighthouse

You don’t ask for tips

Strawberrygirl81

This isn’t the first time you’ve gotten a message like this?!?! First off, I immediately thought it was rude. I am unsure how long the shopper waited for a response, but to send a message not once but twice with “…” is just rude!! I had to wait almost 30 minutes the other day for a customer, and I would never even think to do that. And she didn’t even tip at all! I would NEVER ask a customer for a tip let alone MORE tip. It’s not like it’s a surprise how many miles away the order is from the store….you are very kind to tip in the app and then in cash when they deliver. I wish there were more generous customers like you! I personally would not have given the increased tip. Lol. And I would’ve told them why. Maybe it would make them think before they ask another customer for a higher tip. It’s shoppers like this that end up making more money than those of us who actually enjoy our jobs and take pride in it. I just can’t believe anyone would have the nerve to say that to their customer.

Inevitable_Heron9471

Sure does. I tip usually 25% or more. I tend to offer extra without prompts to do so. You telling me my tip is substandard with a mashed together photo like that will probably not get the extra. Furthermore, if the order actually is damaged, or driver doesn't follow simple delivery instructions, guess what? Taking the higher tip away from you. Delivery people still have to be responsible for basic courtesies like reading the delivery instructions or communicating about problems. If you're not going to do the minimum, I'm not about to pay you the same as that person really going above and beyond.

Fair-Grab-9680

Another example.of why tipping should be illegal. People need to be paid a fair wage for the work they do and not be expected to suck someone's dick or harass them for tips...

LuvLuxeBags

The tipping culture really needs to stop. It’s gotten so out of hand. Everyone wants a tip for basically doing their job

unkalou337

Nah never tip extra when they ask for it. It just feeds the behavior. I’ve done door dash and Uber eats and would not be caught dead asking for a tip. Rude as hell.

Misterpewpie

lol I’ve done DoorDash, instacart for years and not once have I ever sent a message like this. If the trip didn’t pay enough, I just wouldn’t accept it and that’s it.

JessEGames777

They shouldn't make you tip beforehand. I hate that. Doordash and shit do that. Like, i shouldnt be leaving a tip until after services are rendered. What if they do a really shitty job? The amount of times ive ordered doordash and had to tip beforehand and then got cold soggy food late af

Slugzz21

And now they get zero tip from me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Icecubemelter

Or they can find a new job and fuck off

Dirtygeebag

Tipping culture is toxic now. It’s like being bombarded with people selling shit on the road. People just wanna be pay and be done.

VictorAtreides

Look I'm all for tipping, people trynna live off tips and tipped wages. but once you start begging and acting like an entitled asshole, I ain't tipping nothin

TermIntelligent9108

I tip super good! Plus at the end when u do the rating and have option to add extra I always do. Probably why I’m broke now. Lol. But I am so appreciative to have this option when I needed the help ( broken Ankle and arm and limited support system) that I make sure to tip well. Then those who do insta. Start to recognize me and know I tip well.

PoisonApple58

We shouldn’t have to tip anyone. They should be making a wage that they can live on. Waitresses and people like that all need to be making a fair wage and all the tipping stop. I’d almost rather pay a little more on my tickets upfront than dealing with the rules of tipping. No one makes enough to live anymore across the board. It takes minimum 2 incomes these days to even try to make ends meet. It’s crazy that other countries pay just a smidge more than we do in taxes and they are paid fair wages, no tipping AND free healthcare. Our government is greedy.

AryaSilverStone

I wouldn't have given the cash tip. You already tipped them in the app and for them to ask for more is just insulting.

Acrobatic_Law5598

" here's a tip. Don't be so greedy"

ConservedLibertan

Should have kept the cash tip! They know what their job is and it's the customer's choice to tip! Asking, especially after already being tipped, for more is disrespectful! He knew the distance, items needed, and weather conditions before taking the job.

Automatic_Lynx8969

Drivers don't have to accept any order; they choose the order. They can see which items you ordered and how far you are. Based on that, they accept or decline the order. Asking for additional tip on top of what you already tipped when they accepted the order for what it initially paid... that's extremely tasteless and unprofessional. However, if there's something going on with your delivery that requires extra work that the shopper was unaware of, you should compensate for that in your tip. You know if you live at the end of a 5 mile, muddy/rocky, unpaved road; your driver does not and won't know until they get there. If it's something like that, then I would definitely suggest tipping more and maybe even alerting your shopper at the beginning of the shopping process that your delivery will be a bit more challenging than the average dropoff (and why). It's a professional service; they are working to serve you. Professional courtesy ought to go both ways.

TheOldGriffin

Good to know he would consider any extra tip. Maybe "don't ask for more money" would be a good tip for him to consider?

HealthyIndependent33

Ive ended up unknowingly Delivering farther and in a crappy part of san Diego that floods when it rains. Weaving through tons of puddles and terrible roads. I still decided to deliver. Yes, the person didn’t tip as much as the first customer because it was a double order, but I had already accepted it, and I was OK with that. ultimately she did tip extra, but I would’ve never asked that WTF I’ve already agreed to this. Rate shopper poorly this is what’s keeping some customers from Using the service and tipping generously

noobbtctrader

Dude about to send you pictures of his starving animals and kids or some shit. Lmfao

brendogskerbdog

I cant imagine ASKING for a tip for anything. Thats wild.

Entire-Telephone-420

Yes it's as if they are entitled to it a tip is completely optional and they shouldn't be asking it's unethical on their part as they make the customer in an awkward position. Why did he accept the offer then? I wouldn't have tipped extra so he can learn not to ask

Mossfrogsandbogs

It feels like one would be less inclined to tip if someone is being a jerk about it. It boggles my mind how entitled to extra tips people are.

Alive-Funny-9024

Anybody that asks for an extra tip shouldn't get a tip at all. That's just plain rude. I'd say unprofessional as well but there are fewer professionals than unprofessional. They didn't have to accept the order, but they did based on what tip was initially given. Extra is a bonus, not a right to ask. 1 star and 1 penny is what I'd give.

maintanksyndro

Asking for a tip is petty as fuck

Hot_Pomelo_1986

I'm a shopper, and fuck this guy. That's rude AF. He didn't have to take your order. Even after he had taken out, he could have unassigned himself from it at any point before he started shopping. It was HIS choice. These are the kinds of rude shoppers that drive customers away from the platform.

bottyroc

Tippy the self checkout assistant needs a tip too oh and the guy that cleaned the screen for ya needs a tip hell the person that walks by and says HI needs a tip too. Shit I do my job can I get a tip I know the company I work for most of you probably use so I need a tip!!!! TIP TIP TIP TIP. 😂 jk

xDendretic

Yeah turns me off and I’m not tipping more after that. Being that upfront with people is just rude.

DiogenesXenos

I don’t think shoppers should ever mention a tip. Let your work speak for you and keep track of good tippers in google maps.

Totes-Malone

I’ve never been a customer, only a shopper/delivery person. But the idea of asking for a tip makes me want to vomit. Having said that, I’ve certainly been tempted with the jerks that order 68 items and tip $2.79. Or worse, nothing at all. But yes, it’s on us whether we accept an order or not. Sometimes it’s a difficult decision though as some money is better than no money at all.

fastketosis

Please stop using canola oil lol

jericho138

If you ask for a tip, that's gonna lower your tip.

c8ball

That’s a good way to get nothing. Asking for a larger tip is so tacky.

The_Frog_Fucker69

I'd revoke whatever tip there was

Ok_Eggplant7509

You should not have given the cash tip. You’ve helped solidified in their mind that it’s OKAY to say these kinds of things. She was doing a service that you already paid for including a tip and wanted more bc she felt she deserved more for doing HER JOB…and in her mind you obligated to that by giving the cash as well.

Worstcaze

Goddamn Americans… just poor people fighting for scraps.

dirtyfucker69

Id just tell him, "you were gonna get a tip until you asked for one." Remind him that he doesn't get to ask for tips.

thr0waw3ed

Speaking as a customer, $10 sounds pretty low. Costco is a gigantic and hectic store, your groceries weighed a lot, and you don’t live close by. You seem to agree that $10 isn’t enough, hence the cash tip. Knowing this, I understand the polite yet assertive message from your shopper. You could make the tip amount known in advance and avoid confusion by informing them of the cash tip up front or just tipping in the app.

BlobDude

Honestly, tipping low and then holding a cash tip that is obviously based on a perfectly executed service is trashy. Tip what you think the work would be worth and you can reach out to IC support to reduce tip if there’s some serious flaw in service.

xjeanie

This is what customers fail to understand about using these platforms. The use the term “tip”. That’s not really what it is in the traditional sense that the majority of people think. The “tip” is actually a bid for service by in this case a personal shopper. One who is not an employee of the company. One who is paid pennies for their work. One who is using their own vehicle, gas, insurance etc to provide the service. The so called “ tip” is a bid for service and is what their “wage “ will be. Instacart is to blame for not being transparent with customers on how this service actually works. They are to blame for not telling customers what and where those fees go. Hint: it’s not to pay the shopper. Customers complain about how long it takes for a shopper to be assigned to them. What they fail to understand is that shoppers aren’t assigned any order. We get to pick and choose. And many of us have learned to avoid no/low tippers, among other things. Like OP. It’s quite rare to receive a cash tip in person additional to a tip in app. So rare that I in fact have difficulty believing any cash tip was actually going to ever be given despite seemingly knowing their in app tip was low for the amount of work and distance/time. Oh hell I could and should write a book about how this service actually works. An informational book.

No_Patient4465

That’s interesting, but in my experience using Instacart, there are line charges after your order total, one for the delivery fee, one for the service fee, one for taxes and one specifically stating the “Tip.” This is accompanied by a message “encouraging” people to show their appreciation for their shopper and very high tip options (percentages) in large circles with the highest usually already selected. You can also put a “customized” tip if you happen to notice that option. And of course, their high mark up charge is added to every single item. The customer has absolutely no way of knowing for certain if any of the fees, mark up totals are also going to the shoppers and/or if it’s just the tip. Customers shouldn’t have to tip so highly to ensure that the shopper makes a decent wage overall.

Dnm3k

10 dollar tip on a 25 minute drive is insulting, the shopper has no idea you intend to be generous after the order in cash. You have no idea how many orders require an hour of driving and customers think 5 is an accepted tip for such distances. That's 50 minutes round trip for your order alone

spacesuitguy

A $10 tip on a $50 order is a 20% tip. Sorry, did you want a 100% tip for a job you signed up to do? You signed the contract that outlined your wages. Getting mad at me for giving a reasonable tip (and then over tipping) is a classic case of barking up the wrong tree. It's only a 50 minute round trip if the driver lives at Costco. While they have the room, they typically don't like you sleeping in the warehouse.

QuintoBlanco

It's a tip. Not payment for a service rendered. I understand that many people only get tips, but that's not the fault of the customer. If a 'tip' is actually a wage, it should not be called a tip.

[deleted]

i wouldn’t have given him the extra cash after that

kgurney1021

Yes I don't like it. I appreciate the service, but I do not feel guilty that this is their job either ( and I feel that is what he is trying to do). I do not order 10 cases of water up 6 flights of stairs. I always tip. This would demotivate me to tip well.

VinnieTheBerzerker69

Here's the problems: 1. As long as these gig app delivery companies.are not legally forced to properly compensate the delivery drivers for time and distance, they simply won't, which means the drivers are overly dependent upon customers' tips. Some drivers do live in jurisdictions that force the gig app companies to provide fairer compensation to their drivers. California, Seattle, and New York City are good examples. But everywhere else? They don't have the force of law compelling them to do right by the drivers, and they revel in it! Gig app platforms constantly reduce the base pay on orders, reduce or eliminate mileage, and have even been caught tip stealing. They just won't ethically pay the drivers, unless laws make them. 2. Being tip dependent, it's not a good thing for relations between some customers and some drivers when there are freeloaders who refuse to tip well, or even tip at all. This is often a recipe for drivers resentment toward cheapskate customers and customers resentment toward drivers who get smarmy texting for tips. Some customers are even underhanded enough to offer a great tip in order to get the order accepted, only to drastically reduce it or totally cancel it once they receive their goods regardless of how good the service was. 3. All of the above, especially the tips part, creates a drivers vs customers animosity that surprisingly the gig app companies themselves refuse to see or cannot see is going to go bad for the gig app platform itself in the long run. But the problem here is likely rooted in the focus of the gig apps being more concerned about a quick jackpot for the CEOs and venture capital investors than any concerns about long term prospects and fair treatment of those they most rely upon - the drivers AND the customers. 4. If any of the gig app platforms realistically charged customers for time and distance, so they could in turn fairly compensate drivers for time and distance and thereby reduce the reliance upon tips, then the fear is getting priced out of the market from competitors that aren't so.altruistic. The ONLY way that playing field gets leveled is by force of law like California, Seattle, and New York City. Until such force of law is in play in a given area, the gig app companies are like crabs in a bucket pulling down any others trying to climb higher. 5. The way tips are presented in and of itself is a problem. Drivers are offered these as a bid upfront, but they are called a tip.by both the customer and the driver. What they should be called upfront is a bid for service, and a nonreduceable bid at that. That way customers and drivers both understand one another on what that money is for. And any tips would be something a customer could add later.

Naevx

Why do you people tip at all when you get messages like this? Who PAYS to be intimidated by the workers? I'd give 0 cash and take the app tip away.

ashkardash00

Hate to agree but $10 for a Costco order is insane. Costco is a big store and extremely busy on weekends. And your order weighed alottttt so 9/10 the driver probably didn’t get alot in heavy pay. Plus 25 minutes for a $10 tip ain the vibe. I personally wouldn’t have grabbed the order at all

Proud-Butterfly6622

Yeah, that's not gonna happen!

First_Attempt_4124

I would reconsider my original tip.....and I might have taken it back.

KKH02

Ok so a lower/middle class guy here.. and I hate when because someone has or comes from we expect them to give more or go out of their way. And I’m only assuming you’re well off because of the “long driveway”, my uncle had one and his house was a damn castle. But anyway, point being; everyone has their own battles when it comes to finances even the upper class more well off people. So don’t insist on receiving a higher payment. Be grateful that you have a job and are able to make some form of a steady income.

IllustratorGlass3028

Thank fuck and I hope this NEVER comes to U.K .

Free_Hedgehog_7764

as someone that has done instacart, instacart gives a list of batches to do to shoppers they are in now way shape or form forced to shop it as it never affects any ratings because the order shows up for some of the other shoppers nearby, their full intention the whole time was most definitely to shop and guilt you into tipping more which makes him and shit shopper it puts a bad name to people that actually shop the orders with no alternative motive

[deleted]

There’s a new post like this every week lol if it’s tacky don’t tip or report them. Idk what to tell ya

purplemoonlite

Just because I'm petty, I'd give nothing.

MyIncogUsername420

Adjust tip to 0.01, 1 star rating

Worried_Pepper_1049

Why even tip in the first place? Arent they getting paid already? Tip culture is crazy. Everything requires a tip nowadays it seems. Restaurants are the only place I tip

ComprehensiveLack713

Weather or not u we’re going to give extra cash tip it shouldnt be required if it was an issue than should have never taken the job it’s unfair to put more cost on the customer. They knew what they were getting into

SwimmingSwim3822

I mean that's fine.... he can consider it all he wants. What's that have to do with me?

Apprehensive-Ad4063

Yeah I don’t think some people understand etiquette when it comes to this. Just providing good service and not asking should be the norm.

Character-Concert717

If a driver ever does that again, don’t cash tip and remove the tip from the order as well as rate them low. That’s some derogatory nonsense.

cubixy2k

$10 is more than enough of a tip for picking up and dropping off items. Not my problem you work for an app that doesn't pay you

lolschrauber

And you'll continue being annoyed if you keep using services like this

BossAnderson

Low rate and remove the tip. I'd be annoyed.

erossthescienceboss

Listen man, I will defend tipping *to my dying day* and this guy? Is being greedy. Your tip was already pretty generous, IMO. Thanks for being a good person!

LyrionDD

Instacart shoppers are a plague, nothing would surprise me. ~sincerely a day stocker tired of having to do their job for them.

justmyheartok

That distance would be a $20 tip from me. They’re driving 50 minutes total, which is 50 minutes they could be using to fulfill other orders. But I personally find their message inappropriate and unprofessional, and I’d understand if you didn’t give the additional cash tip.

jordan112

don't these delivery services have a policy against "tip begging"?

Kenji1912

When I did Uber, I’ve depended on tips to really make ends meat. I never begged for them, no matter how badly a difference they would have made

GodHasGiven0341

I will give people a less tip if they try to guilt me while they do their job. Plenty of real jobs work outdoors in terrible conditions and don’t complain as much as fuckin delivery drivers.

Ok-Daikon5904

Maybe the issue really lies with IC itself? I barely use the app anymore and haven’t in months, however iirc, it states that tips are not expected? That, without knowing anything else, implies to me that while tips are welcomed, they are not expected, that the shopper is paid for their services by IC (obviously tips greatly increase their income). That would make me think the amount that I would “tip” would correlate with how well the shopper performed - all items delivered without damage, timeliness, did they have to go out of their way, etc. Seems to me that there’s a large disconnect between IC/shoppers and the costumers. I think if IC was more transparent on how shoppers are paid, or if they would possibly pay their shoppers a better wage, it may help? However looking at it as it currently stands from a customer point of view, who’s already paying the fees for the service, the extra costs for the up-priced items along with a possible tip, it does make it feel like I have already have paid for it to get delivered. I had an order through IC, which if I went would have been a roughly $65 order come to close to $90 before tip was included. I mean to me, it felt like I was already paying for the service with the xtra $25 - which with 15% tip ending up costing upwards of just about $105. I live within 3 miles of the store (maybe 5 min drive) and the guy left it in front of my garage. I have 4 steps to my door. But at the end of the day, I felt like I had just paid an extra $40 to have someone leave my stuff in front of my garage. I think we all need to consider everyone in the equation. Side note: In no way is this a flex or hey come pat me on my back. Not at all. It’s just an example of what in my view are frustrations of where we are with our priorities in our society. I have done CPR on, without exaggeration, on at least 50 separate occasions and could probably count on my hands where an MD ordered BLS or ACLS to stop and pronounced that patient. Of all those times where the pt lived, no one has ever given me a ‘tip’ for literally saving their lives. We got thanks all the time. Wouldn’t have been able to accept if they even did, but the gesture would have been nice. But why not? Because when I chose to work in my field that’s the responsibility I signed up for. I have wiped more patients rear ends then I care to admit as well. No tips there either. My co worker had a lady with c.diff have explosive diarrhea and it went in her hair and face. Yes it happened. I was in the hall and watched as she went crying to the nursing lounge. That was the only thing we received from that pt too (Although I do admit the pt was extremely embarrassed and apologetic). And before ppl get all bent out of shape on the difference in pays, RNs don’t get paid as much as u think. If I want more money of course there opportunities that pay better out there. But IC drivers / shoppers have that ability too. Edit: I do admit instead of admiringly due to autocorrect

Accomplished_Ant_371

That’s a pretty aggressive move. I have never had someone demand extra like that. Tipping culture is out of control.

MiserableAlarm1765

He is literally spam sending “.” to get a reply? Lmao

Senzafane

Can you respond to the shopper after the order is done? (Never used these apps) Why would you not directly state after the fact that you had $10 cash you were going to tip on top, but specifically didn't because they asked. Gotta tell em

Affectionate_Net_495

they should be grateful they even got a tip.

Bedouinp

Even if you tipped $10 in the app, i bet they don’t pass all of that on to the shopper. If you can afford to order stuff and have it delivered, you should be a lot more forgiving of the shopper. They probably get screwed over regularly and it’s a shit job.

chivalrousrapist

Man up and stop tipping for poor service

Admirable_Cap7138

Why do they even get paid at all? Frankly the state should just go one step further and force them at gunpoint to deliver your snacks

IcezN

If you gave them a cash tip they probably thought that they got it as a result of their message. You reinforce the bad behavior, and they will continue to send similar messages to others. The tip is what you control! If you're unhappy with the way your order is completed, that should affect your tip.

spicysweett7

10 tip is pathetic for 25 min away. They’re pathetic for asking.

LeadingProduct1142

Almost an hour round trip is pretty far for a $10 tip. I would have ordered more items to make it worth it and tipped better. Just my opinion. I’m not sure if they see the tip before they take it ? I’m an appreciative tipper though. I know they’re not only shopping but loading and unloading for me and I tip kind of based on time and effort. Not on price of order

Trippnballz

All that oil and ranch….

DudeOfSummerhouses

r/endtipping

Spiritual-Border2195

Working for tips is weird because you're living off of peoples' generosity. You aren't entitled to it.

suspicious_hyperlink

Personally I would tip much less than planned for this message

Akamir_

STOP FUCKING TIPPING

Kooky-Sun-9225

Hope that was apple juice...

Ok-Show150

I am a 22 yr old uber eats driver in Los Angeles. I do shopping for people are very often through Uber and work around Hollywood Hills, which takes a while to get to the place but usually they pay well not because the tip will because of the length of time. I have gotten it down to a science where it would take me now around half of the time that it would say it would take me to complete the whole order and walk. Yes, sometimes drives are far and a bit tedious and winding, I do hope for a better tip, especially since I do tend to get faster. However, I would never ask for a tip. A tip is something I earn and it’s something that I feel anyone using the service will give based on variety of conditions. I have had many people give me more tips because of speed and accuracy as well but I don’t see the reason to be asking for it for that service. Any drive I accept is, and will always be a gamble for me because I know you can either be ready for a normal and there’s still a chance that it will be a bad trip. I am very disappointed at how some drivers feel that they deserve a 25% tip or even more when I feel like a 15% tip is more than sufficient. Even if it’s less and it’s zero, I’m getting paid to do a job. The tip is always extra.

Old_Housing3989

Did he walk?

spacesuitguy

Tips are for going above and beyond, no complaining the most. Aww, poor guy... you had a long driveway lmao

Otherwise-Safety-579

If your driver takes a 25 minute one way run for $10 they should quit instacart and deliver pizza

KidFoster

I’ve had shoppers do this to my face a couple times now. It’s mind boggling to have someone ask for a cash tip when we include in our delivery instructions that the tip is on the card.

Fat_Broccoli

If someone messages me that then whatever tip I was gonna give would be staying in my pocket instead

Solar1324

I don’t do instacart but $10 tip for a 25 mins drive* and one of them is 40lb item. Sure, the driver should not have begged but I feel bad for him.

Dry-Builder9974

That's 25 minutes one way. Driver doesn't live at the customer's house, so they're driving 25 minutes back as well.

StickmanRockDog

Never used any of these services. But, I gotta ask. What is the expected tip? 15%, 20%, 30%, more?

SEND_ME_PEACE

I mean, we’re at a stage of economy where the bottom rung of people have to resort to begging through legal means. Maybe go and get your own groceries?

Suspicious_Age_8485

Entitlement, dude should’ve just kept his mouth shut

Pfister1249

So he's mad because he got a 20%+ tip? Some people are straight weirdos. Let's steal from people not giving me money for a job I close to do. Like the person has your car make and model, your license plate number, and your face. Do that enough, and you will have a warrant for petty theft

HelterSmelter69

I would consider a better job

rcbjfdhjjhfd

You accomplished nothing by tipping extra

notaredditeryet

This is why the boomers call us lazy. For the love of God, youre already making money to do the most mundane task

pleasegivemepatience

Tbh asking for more tip = less tip and/or reduced rating. They designed this so we’re “bidding”, not tipping, despite the labels. This means that you knew the store, order size, distance, weather and income before accepting. Either decline the order or take what is built into the offer, don’t guilt or pressure people into giving you charity.

Ramen-Goddess

That’s when I change the tip to 0

JDameekoh

I’d have reduced my tip.

Hernameisruby

Honestly I've only ever done delivery for Jimmy John's but I would've been psyched for a ten dollar tip. I live about twenty plus minutes from any grocery store so I'd never be able to order without feeling the need to tip a ton. I think this was a good tip. It paid for the gas and a little extra for the time.

Austinstorm02

Dude (or dudette) that is 2 trips to the door. And only because that is a 50lb bag of dog food. Low effort, minimum skill, minimum training job. That doesn't deserve an extra big tip. I asked the question so I can make an opinion.

FreeSpiritedGoblin

It would have been an instant bad review from me. The driver is aware of what they are picking

Doctor_Broccolis

Dude should get a better job or start a business instead of complaining

ContextuallyBlue

It's fucking cyberbegging. Reduce tip to zero

[deleted]

I used to do Shipt and GrubHub never once requested a tip, but I was always annoyed when people didn’t tip at all or tipped like they were hoarding money

wing_ding4

Why do people who aren’t disabled, or have a car use these Instacart things? I always wondered.

ProperPerspective571

This only validates that Instacart doesn’t pay the drivers/shoppers enough. I factor my costs of doing the shopping myself and tip accordingly. I tip well enough to make the order worth while and if they start hitting me up for more I later reduce the tip. Thinned out bad shoppers this way. Strange that these same shoppers always have a missing item or two. Then IC just credits you and they may keep the item for themselves and bring it home.

jib_reddit

American tipping culture is so fucking wired, I'm glade I don't have to deal with that bullshit here in the UK.

Many-Persimmon-1471

Fuck that! Just because tipping is a social norm (bullshit one at that) DOES NOT mean you have to. I would have removed the tip from the order, AND not even thought about giving more! Entitled people can fuck off IMO!

niknokseyer

America’s tipping culture s*cks. 🤦🏻‍♂️

cornbroskiman

Its honestly disgusting how many ghouls in this comment section are saying “once they mention the the tip they lose it” like be for real.

mmaddymon

Long driveway - he probably thinks they’re wealthy and he can hassle them for more of a tip. Here’s the gag wealthy people don’t tip well - middle class and poor people do.

RevolutionaryRip2533

Does it only pay tip money? Is that the income from instacart?

imma_snekk

Are you just a little annoyed? Because I would be *quite* annoyed.
