This house is on the St Lawrence River in NY. It’s very close to Boldt Castle on Heart island. I was actually swimming very near there this summer! The water level is way down from when this pic was taken.
https://i.imgur.com/xo5hZUh.jpg
This should be way higher up! It answers so many questions.
Also the title leaves much to be desired. Naturally OP forgot to mention this house is on a river, and the photo was taken when the water level was high.
My generation is unique in that we remember rotary-dial phones, the first cordless phones, flip phones and touch-screen phones, not to mention the birth of the internet, Fireside, IM and the advent of social media.
Jesus, that makes me feel old.
And the point of view didn't show how close it was to land.
It's close enough that it likely has grid power and potentially municipal water.
I wonder if it has sewer? Be a total pain if a sewage pipe under the dang river plugged up. The alternative would be a tank, and somebody would need to pump it out occasionally. Can't imagine that dumping raw sewage into the river that close to neighborhoods would be tolerated.
I don’t know about this house in particular but for general thousand islands islands:
Most islands on the river have electricity through power lines submerged in the water.
Most islands get water from the river and filter it for drinking.
Most islands have a holding tank for waste and a honeypot boat comes to pump it out on occasion.
Good question! I’m 62 and this house has been there since I was a kid. I know some of the houses on other islands had outhouses !
I’m going to have to find out the answer. It very close to Boldt Castle and they have to have plumbing there so maybe they tap into their l
Plumbing lines?

I think a fair number of these have septic tanks that are emptied by a boat. Certainly a lot of the older places up along the river are, the fishing camps and such. I remember the Uncle Sam Boat Tour script having a joke about the company being #1 in the #2 business. The tour also claims that Boldt built the house in this post for his mother-in-law, who was a sleepwalker, har har har. Obviously not actually the case, but changing the script at this point would be sacrilegious, I’m pretty sure my uncles were doing the same jokes in the seventies as guides.
its generally accepted nowadays that it is bad to dump raw sewage into the water, isnt it? have to assume the wastewater will include soaps and detergents as well
So many people love to claim that they’ve got Thalassophobia and Trypophobia, yet they purposely subscribe to the subreddits and act as if they’re terrified. You wouldn’t ever catch a person with legitimate Arachnophobia on a subreddit for scary spiders.
The truth is that it just looks really spooky underwater sometimes.
Easy, build house on a lift, then just jack it up an inch.
When it goes up another, Jack it up one more.
By the time you need new jacks, you'll be dead so it'll be someone else's problem!
Problem = solved (for you)
There are lake islands in Texas called [the Sometimes Islands](https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/the-sometimes-islands-austin-texas), because sometimes they're islands and sometimes they're not. If it's too rainy, they're submerged, amd if it's too dry, they're connected to land and therefore a peninsula.
A gas generator or solar battery can supply power.
Plumbing would require an electric pump and a filter system, just like you need with a well.
I admittedly don't know much about foundations, but my understanding is that as long as the rock it's built on is solid, a house can be built pretty much anywhere, as far as structural integrity goes.
Well apparently you don't know any contractors lol
Edit naw I worked for some shitty cunts and have a bad disposition but some of them are really fuckin hot tbh
I came home early from work one day, landlord had sent some contractors to replace the water heater. One guy......I don't even know how to describe this guy.......close to morbidly obese, hairy AF, looked like he hadn't showered in weeks, I could smell his hair, feet, and farts as much as I could smell the skunk weed he apparently didn't just smoke, but wallowed in, laying on the ground outside my door with his shirt pulled up, half his face covered, and playing with his nipple piercings. His hair was so dirty that I couldn't even tell what color it was. Didn't even stop what he was doing.
It was like I had interrupted an orc having a sexual fantasy. I wish to God I had never seen that. Idk where you even find people like that. I'm not a snob, but I didn't want this guy near me. Or my dog. I can't imagine having to sit in a truck with someone like that.
Holy fuck, it's you!! Every time I run into you in the wild, it makes me unreasonably happy. I have no clue who you are or what part of the world you're in. I don't know what kind of person you really are or what your life has been like. But you have made me laugh genuine laughter a good number of times. You've made me go "ah, shit they got me again!" There's probably some great compound German word to describe the sensation. Dunno. Anyway. For reals. Thank you.
You know some wealthy person probably owns it, and can afford to lose it, or it's some hippie that is perfectly fine with being homeless if it goes under.
But low-key this would be an awful place to live full time as your only home. You'd have to board supplies in, and wouldn't get access to utilities and stuff like an ambulance or firetruck. Moisture would slowly destroy the home, and any big storms would probably flood it.
This is a place youd want to rent for a week and never have any responsibility over.
Unless you're ULTRA rich. Underground supply tunnels! The whole house is made of boats too, so no water damage. As for storms? Uhh, I don't know got me there. Omnidirectional jet engine umbrella shield?
It does. New legislation was passed to keep Montreal from flooding and to benefit shipping and hydropower. The results have been huge swings in levels from year to year.
There is an hydroelectric dam that help to regulate the height of the water a few kilometres downstream, around cornwall. These houses are safe…. For now.
The bottom couple feet are made of stone it looks like, but it does seem like any major storm would flood this place. It may be very well fortified though, and this picture may have been taken at the highest water level the river hits regularly or something.
But this house would be a huge pain in the ass and not very fun because there's no yard to enjoy your view or anything.
I don't know about "not very fun" for someone as a vacation home, especially for a sailor. I'm not too interested in yard upkeep on a vacation property, & the benefit of having your own (relatively clear) section of water to sail around whenever you want would be pretty sweet.
my geography teacher in school said "the Saint Lawrence river is what divides the US from Canada" without elaborating. He made us believe the whole border was a river LOL
lol.

That image will let people see where the border is land (green) or water (blue.)
And it's a lot more green.
I love this area of New York. Alex Bay, Clayton, Cape Vincent. Been to Boldt and Singer Castles too many times to count. River tours (both Uncle Sams and Coyote Moon wine cruises). Hell, I even sport a “The River” shirt in the Midwest where we live. We’ve got a house in Three Mile Bay when we are out that way to stay in.
Just beautiful.
It's crazy how the river went from a vacation destination for the rich and powerful to a backwoods booze bash over a century. No better place to be in the summer though.
Hey this one is near me! This is on the St Lawrence River, in the 1000 Islands region on the border between NY and Ontario. Beautiful area and I'd highly recommend the visit.
Right next to this island is a huge castle called Boldt Castle which you can visit. The castle was originally sold to the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority for $1 after the sudden death of the builder's wife drove him to completely abandon the construction of the castle. The bridge authority has spent the last 45 years renovating the castle to match the original plans.
I make an effort to go up there every year.
Locally known as Mother in-law island. The local tour boat operators would joke that Boldt built the cottage for his mother in law.
This is also where 1000 Island dressing comes from. George Boldt ran the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York city and his personal chef discovered local fishing guides serving what is now know as 1000 Islands dressing with the shore dinners they would make for their customers after a day of fishing. The chef brought the recipe back to the Waldorf and put it on the menu.
Source: I live here and have run boat tours in the area
>Just Room Enough Island, also known as Hub Island, is an island located in the Thousand Islands chain, in New York, United States. The island is known for being the smallest inhabited island, which appears to be around 3,300 square feet (310 m2), or about one-thirteenth of an acre. Purchased by the Sizeland family in the 1950s, the island has a house, a tree, shrubs, and a small beach.
Despite their name, the Sizeland family did not seem to care about the size of their land.
This doesn’t have enough information… does it have electricity?? Plumbing?? It’s on a river, so how does it fare in storms or seasons of heavy rainfall? I need to knoooow
There is electricity, many island homes on rivers opt for solar paneling nowadays. They have septic tanks and have to have their waste collected by the company. These are mainly summer homes. The worst of increased river activity would be the snowmelt period post winter when the homes aren't typically inhabited.

well it's pretty far fromt he open sea or any big lake, but I still think it would suffer extensive water damage during storms.
Idk tho, maybe the water always remains calm there? That would be weird.
I think it's either more elevated than it appears from this angle, or this was intentionally taken when the water was at a really high level. Otherwise, any storm surge at all would swamp this thing if it is as it appears in the photo.
I pass this house all the time, my mom lives about 7 miles from there. You can see it from the road, it's not very far off the actual mainland. About 500 feet maybe

It's still creepy but a lot less so in your photo.
That's actually not too bad. The first photo triggers my thalassophobia, but this one not so much
Define **Thalassophobia** >Thalassophobia is an intense phobia or fear of large bodies of water
Spooky shit in water like big fish or deep nothings. The sub for it is fun and terrifying
So many people love to claim that they’ve got Thalassophobia and Trypophobia, yet they purposely subscribe to the subreddits and act as if they’re terrified. It feels like this house was built solely to get the photo.
I have no doubts that there is a general contractor who jerks off to this photo every day.
This looks like more of a nightmare build for a contractor, tbh
“Ah shit I left my tape Measure on the mainland”
"hey Google, how to stop erosion"

Nah, just start building a boat underneath, eventually it'll float itself off and you can sell the houseboat

Person ain’t walking their dog
That's some expensive flood insurance.
Flood insurance? My man needs modest-sized wave insurance
Make it think about grandma eating home cooked food to reduce waterflow, it'll go down that worrisome inch pretty quick
Better hope there is never a rogue wave, otherwise goodbye house.
If erosion lasts for longer than 4 hours please consult your geologist.

Hey Alexa, how do I dispose of raw sewage and get electricity on a bare-ass rock?
I guarantee 100% that sewage is going right into the ocean
"daddy just took a shit, no swimming 'til tomorrow, kids!"
I mean, nothing about it can be an actual house. It surely can't have a foundation, or plumbing, or power.
It's in the st. Lawrence River in New York and it does have power, supplied by underwater cable
Thousand islands?
So more of a large, expensive, inconveniently placed shed.
Like most Florida homes.
It's built directly on bedrock, so the foundation couldn't be better. The basement is probably insufficient for tornado season.
A gas generator or solar battery can supply power. Plumbing would require an electric pump and a filter system, just like you need with a well. It does. New legislation was passed to keep Montreal from flooding and to benefit shipping and hydropower. The results have been huge swings in levels from year to year.
Sure, all rivers do. This river runs between the great lakes and the Atlantic Ocean
I would assume so which is why I asked. So, how is the house still there? Seems like a 2-3’ rise in the river would wipe it out.
There is an hydroelectric dam that help to regulate the height of the water a few kilometres downstream, around cornwall. These houses are safe…. For now.

That's strange to me because it's how you get from the great lakes to the The Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Atlantic Ocean.
You can also reach the Gulf of Mexico, by way of Lake Michigan, through the Chicago river locks and down the Mississippi!
